  1. Love the first hand reports. Thanks.
  2. I don't think there is any way Machado will sign an extension early, so I wouldn't even consider that angle. While renting a guy for 2-3 months isn't an ideal situation, it can be to our advantage as the cost of a really good player doesn't have to be that high. I've said from the start, make a play for the guy, but set what you're willing to give up and don't go over it. If it works, great. If not, then so be it. At this point, I wouldn't include Hiura or Peralta in any kind of deal. Peralta has the potential to be an impact player down the stretch - and Hiura just looks like a keeper. Neither is worth giving up for 2-3 months of Machado (no matter how much I'd love to see him in our lineup).
  3. Final: Biloxi 5, Mississippi 1 Diplan Whiffs Ten In Win Stokes Jr. Extends On-Base Streak with Clutch Late Triple By Spencer Siegel / Biloxi Shuckers (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Marcos Diplan was lights out on Sunday, throwing 6.1 innings of shutout ball. He allowed only four hits and a walk while striking out 10 batters. Biloxi hitters were mostly silent, getting only five hits and a pair of walks, but they came up big when it mattered. The Shuckers got four of their five hits in the 8th inning to plate four runs - and ensure the win. Batting Troy Stokes, Jr.: 1-4, 3B Lucas Erceg: 1-3, HR Max McDowell: 1-3 Pitching Marcos Diplan: 6.1 IP, 4 hits, 0 ER, 1BB, 10K Brad Kuntz: 0.2 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 1BB, 1K Danny Reynolds: 1.0 IP, 2 hits, 1 ER, 1BB, 0K, Blown Save, Win Jon Olczak: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 1BB, 2K Notes Troy Stokes, Jr. extended his on base streak to 16 games. Biloxi Game Log Big 8th put the Shuckers over the top. Highlight was Stokes' 2-run triple. Biloxi Bottom of the 8th Josh Prince remains in the game as the third baseman. 4. Final: Mississippi 3, Biloxi 2 M-Braves Come Back to Top Shuckers 3-2 Miley Spins Four Perfect Innings In Rehab Outing By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers Troy Stokes Jr bats at MGM Park. The Shuckers outfielder hit his third home run in three days in the eighth inning for Biloxi. (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score After scoring two runs in the top of the 1st via a Troy Stokes, Jr. HR, the Shucker bats went into the tank, resulting in a 3-2 lose versus Mississippi. Biloxi had its chances on Saturday with 10 hits and three walks. However, they went 1-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12. The Shuckers lack of scoring wasted a superb outing from the rehabbing Wade Miley, who threw four innings of perfect ball while striking out four batters. Unfortunately, Thomas Jankins couldn't hold on to the lead given to him by Miley, surrendering three runs over the final four innings. Batting Troy Stokes, Jr.: 2-5, 3B, HR Jake Gatewood: 2-5 Tyler Heineman: 1-3, 2BB Trent Grisham: 1-3, BB Pitching Wade Miley: 4.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 4K Thomas Jankins: 4.0 IP, 5 hits, 3 ER, 1BB, 3K, Lose Notes This was Miley's fourth rehab start. Keston Hiura flies out to right fielder Tyler Neslony. Jake Gatewood singles on a ground ball to center fielder Connor Lien. Tyler Heineman strikes out swinging. Gabriel Noriega grounds into a force out, fielded by second baseman Luis Valenzuela. Jake Gatewood out at 2nd.
  5. The numbers are kind of crazy. This is from Cot's contracts: http://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/national-league/washington-nationals/ signed by Washington as a free agent 1/21/15 - $50M signing bonus - $5M in 2015 and $15M each in 2019, 2020, 2021 payments in equal semiannual installments, April-September - salaries: 15:$10M, 16-18:$15M annually. 19-21:$35M annually 2019-21 salaries ($105M) deferred without interest, to be paid in seven $15M installments each July 1 from 2022 to 2028 This plays out as follows: 2015: $15M total ($5M bonus and $10M salary) 2016-18: $15M total annually - all salary 2019-21: $15M total annually - all bonus $15M bonus money ($35M annual salary is deferred each year - total of $105M) 2022-28: $15M annually in deferred salary (total of $105M) Essentially he gets $15M a year from 2015-2028. The key is that his salary from 2019-21 is $35M PLUS he gets installments from his signing bonus, which is $15M a year. You'd have to figure out who owes what. Is the signing bonus owed by the team that originally signed him? Or is the team that acquires him required to pay that check. In the end, Scherzer gets $50M a year from 2019 to 2021 (although $105M is deferred from 2022-28).

  7. Final: Chattanooga 4, Biloxi 1 Shuckers Stranded By M-Braves Biloxi Offense Held Down By Mississippi By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Thursday was a game of missed opportunities for Biloxi. 9. Final: Biloxi 4, Chattanooga 2 Never Say Die Shuckers Comeback to Down Lookouts 4-2 Gatewood's Four Hit Night, Hiura's Homer Help Biloxi To Victory By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Hits O' Plenty for the Shuckers on Monday. 13 to be exact. The 13 hits only netted four runs as Biloxi went 3-16 with runnings in scoring position, and left 12 runners on base. Still, it was enough for a 4-2 come-from-behind win over the Chattanooga Lookouts. Jake Gatewood led the way with four hits, including an HR. Lucas Erceg, Blake Allemand, Gabriel Noriega and Clint Coulter all had two hits each. Keston Hiura added an HR. On the mound, Zach Brown continued his fine season with a solid outing. He tossed 6.2 innings, giving up only a pair of runs. Three relievers would shut down the Lookouts the rest of the way. The Shuckers have won four in a row. Batting Keston Hiura: 1-4, HR, BB Jake Gatewood: 4-5, HR Lucas Erceg: 2-5 Blake Allemand: 2-4, BB Gabriel Noriega: 2-5 Clint Coulter: 2-3, 2B, BB Pitching Zack Brown: 6.2 IP, 7 hits, 2 ER, 3BB, 5K Jon Olczak: 0.2 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 1K, Win Quintin Torres-Costa: 0.2 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 1BB, 1K Danny Reynolds: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 1K, Save Notes Gatewood's HR was his 14th of the year - which leads the Southern League. 10. Yuni is bad - even for the Mexican League (which is a notoriously hitter-friendly environment). In 2017 he had a .270 BA and a .614 OPS. The league average is .287 BA and a .769 OPS.
  11. Ray continues his frustrating streakiness. Has struck out 18 of his last 35 at bats. K% rate is trending upward - now at 27.4% after being in the lower 20s earlier in the year. Some really interesting skills - just not sure where the hit tool is headed. Lots of xbh - he's second in the Southern League in total bases. I'd love to see him settle in as a hitter and cut the strikeout rate down.
  12. Final: Biloxi 6, Chattanooga 3 Biloxi Battles to 6-3 Triumph Over Chattanooga Diplan Allows Two Unearned Runs In Double-A Debut By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score The Shuckers overcame three errors on Sunday to secure a 6-3 victory of Chattanooga. All of Chattanooga's runs were unearned. In his AA debut, Marcos Diplan went five innings, giving up five hits and allowing only one walk. While all of his runs were unearned, he did allow an HR. Cody Ponce and Nate Griep pitched well in relief despite the defensive miscues. To spark the offense, Lucas Erceg and Max McDowell each had two hits, including a home run. Luis Aviles Jr. and Keston Hiura also had a pair of hits each. Batting Keston Hiura: 2-5 Lucas Erceg: 2-5, HR Max McDowell: 2-3, 2B, HR, BB Luis Aviles Jr.: 2-3, BB Pitching Marcos Diplan: 5.0 IP, 5 hits, 0 ER, 1BB, 2K Cody Ponce: 3.0 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 3K, Win Nate Griep: 1.0 IP, 1 hits, 0 hits. 0BB, 0K, Save Notes Corey Ray's streakiness continues. 13. Mass, what is Henry's defensive profile? Good catcher? Average? Bad? Issues? Strengths? Just wondering.
  14. Final: Biloxi 5, Chattanooga 2 Another Late Rally Propels Biloxi to Second Straight Win New Additions to Shuckers Play Key Role in Comeback By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Thomas Jankins threw six innings of 2-hit, 1-run ball to lead the Shuckers to a 5-2 victory on Saturday. 15. Final: Biloxi 7, Chattanooga 2 Biloxi Box Score Biloxi bats came out thundering on Friday, scoring four runs in the top of the 1st. It would be enough for the win, as Shucker pitchers held Chattanooga to just two runs. In a nice performance, Kodi Medeiros would throw five innings and give up only a single unearned run while getting the win. He struck out eight while walking two. Wade Miley, in a rehab assignment, started the game and gave up three hits and a run in two innings of work. He didn't walk anyone and struck out three. Corey Ray, Lucas Erceg and Max McDowell would each get a pair of hits, while Troy Stokes Jr. would hit a 2-run HR. Batting Corey Ray: 2-5, 2B, 3B Troy Stokes Jr.: 1-5, HR Lucas Erceg: 2-5, 2B Trent Grisham: 0-3, 2BB, SB Max McDowell: 2-3, BB Pitching Wade Miley: 2.0 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 0BB, 3K Kodi Medeiros: 5.0 IP, 5 hits, 0 ER, 2BB, 8K, Win Jon Olczak: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 2K John Perrin: 1.0 IP 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 1K Notes Jon Olzcak continues to put up nice numbers in 2018. In 32 innings for the Shuckers out of the pen, he had an ERA of 1.13. He has struck out 36, walked 7 and only given up 19 hits. Biloxi Game Log Nice way to start a game. Troy Stokes Jr. homers (11) on a fly ball to left center field. Corey Ray scores. Keston Hiura doubles (9) on a line drive to center fielder Tanner English. 16. Final: Chattanooga 12, Biloxi 2 Early Lookouts' Barrage Takes Down Shuckers 12-2 Stokes Homers For Biloxi In Return From All-Star Break By Spencer Siegel (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Egad. That was ugly. Biloxi kicked off the second half of the season with a stinker. The offense had only 4 hits and 2 walks - and struck out 15 times. The highlight was Troy Stokes Jr.'s HR in the 9th to spare the Shuckers the shutout. Biloxi pitchers weren't much better with Luis Ortiz getting rocked. The big righty gave up nine hits and six runs in four innings. Batting Troy Stokes Jr.: 1-4, HR Luis Aviles Jr.: 1-3 Blake Allemand: 1-4 Kesten Hiura: 1-4, 2B Pitching Luis Ortiz: 4.0 IP, 9 hits, 6 ER, 1BB, 1K, Lose Miguel Sanchez: 2.0 IP, 4 hits, 2 ER, 1BB, 3K Brad Kuntz: 1.0 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER, 1BB, 2K Danny Reynolds: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 1K Notes Hiura has 8 doubles in just 64 ABs while at Biloxi. Stokes Jr.'s HR was his 10th of the year - tying him for 5th in the Southern League. Biloxi Game Log There was nothing fun in the game log. Don't look at it. You will cry.
  17. From 1971. Uecker's outfit is killer. A huge belt on the outside of a turtleneck. And the hair is pretty awesome too.
  18. As a note, deGrom turned 30 just yesterday. When he hits free agency, he'll be entering his age 33 season. Not a huge deal. On one hand, deGrom might be amenable to an extension now - lock in another couple of years in the off season. I mean, look at Josh Donaldson. He's 32, and based upon his injuries (and lack of production this year) - and barring a big turnaround in 2018 - will not get anything close to what he could have if he had signed a 2-3 year extension a couple of years ago. 33 year old pitchers aren't exactly the safest investment. He might want to lock in on a big money extension this off season while his stock is high. Of course, do you want to extend a guy for big bucks for his 33+ age seasons is another matter. Or deGrom might hold the line, hope he keeps pitching well, and cash in big in free agency the one chance he's going to get. As a Super 2 guy, he's making $7.4M this year in his second year of arby. I'm guessing he can double that - or come close - if he keeps pitching the way he is doing - meaning he's probably a lock to get another $30-35+M over the next two years. That's not bad money. He might bet on himself and say, hey, I'm still gonna have $40M in earnings. Even if I get hurt or whatever, I'm set for life. I'll roll the dice and see if I can do well the next 2.5 years and clean up with a $100M+ deal. No one really knows. Just speculating.
  19. I think he would be a fine addition. Not a great player, but a good one. As a rental, he shouldn't cost too much.
  20. I would agree. Gutierrez and Perkins are okay, but nothing special. Morel would seem like a complete lottery ticket - a guy that young. But the Royals must like the guys to have done the deal. Herrera would have been great for us - but I think we are saving our bullets for some other targets.
  21. Final: Mississippi 2, Biloxi 1 M-Braves Hand Shuckers 2-1 Loss to End First Half Biloxi Finishes with Southern League's Best First Half Record By Spencer Siegel (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Biloxi gave up two unearned runs on Sunday to lose 2-1 to Mississippi. The Shuckers still ended up with the Southern League's best first half record. Trey Supak had a nice game, giving up only a pair of unearned runs (on his own missed catch) over six innings. He struck out eight while walking no one, but got the lose for the day. At the plate, Corey Ray and Keston Hiura each got a pair of hits, while Trent Grisham added a hit and two walks. Batting Corey Ray: 2-5, SB Keston Hiura: 2-5, 2B Trent Grisham: 1-2, 2 BB Pitching Trey Supak: 6.0 IP, 4 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 8K, Lose Brad Kuntz: 2.0 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 0K Cody Ponce: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 1K Notes Ray's 18 stolen bases are tied for the league lead. Ray is second in the league in doubles and total bases. Former top prospect Clint Coulter has struggled to a .200 BA at Biloxi over 120 ABs. Biloxi Game Log Supak's error would prove to be critical in the game. Mississippi Top of the 2nd Tyler Marlette reaches on a missed catch error by pitcher Trey Supak, assist to first baseman Gabriel Noriega. Travis Demeritte singles on a ground ball to center fielder Trent Grisham. Tyler Marlette to 3rd. Alex Jackson strikes out swinging. Connor Lien flies out to left fielder Corey Ray in foul territory. Travis Demeritte to 2nd. Luis Marte singles on a fly ball to center fielder Trent Grisham. Tyler Marlette scores. Travis Demeritte scores. Andres Santiago grounds out, third baseman Blake Allemand to first baseman Gabriel Noriega.
  22. This is exactly what I was thinking when I started the thread. Stearns isn't likely empty the farm system for a guy. Instead, he can look for value for Milwaukee. A league average player at SS is a potentially big upgrade for us. A league average upgrade at catcher is a big upgrade for us. It might not be for other teams, but for us - it's pretty good. It doesn't mean we won't swing for the fences on some deals - but smaller moves can have a big impact. It isn't sexy have Jordy Mercer at SS - but it's a lot nicer than having a sub-.200 slap hitter. Plus, we can just send Arcia to AAA and tell him to get his stuff in order for 2019.
  23. I'm going to throw out Jose Iglesias and Jordy Mercer as a potential Brewer targets in the next month or so. Iglesias is a roughly league average offensive player. He's hit .255. 255 and .262 over the past few years. He plays very good defense. Mercer hits about the same as Iglesias (.255-.265 over the past three years), but has generally show a little more pop. His glove is generally about average. Both players are free agents at the end of the year. And both make around $6.5M. Both are right handers who - as expected - hit lefties better than righties. For Milwaukee, if Arcia is still struggling in July, they could add someone like Mercer or Iglesias and get a solid, if unspectacular player that would solidify a very volatile position. Due to their modest production and fairly high salaries, plus their impending free agency, neither guy should cost much to acquire. At 28, Iglesias is younger than Mercer by three years - but I don't think that really matters if they are only rentals. Iglesias would probably be my favored player of these two, because he's a better defender. I'm not advocating either guy - just saying that they could be potential targets if Arcia continues to struggle, and we don't see the answer in Saladino or Miller (or someone else).
