  1. Monty nailed it. Byrd's a good player. So is Khris Davis. The difference isn't that much. It's a large salary to take on for a marginal increase of productivity. Focus on the bench, 1B and bullpen if you want to upgrade.
  2. I agree with Crew. It looks like we'll retain the guy, and while he technically will have a year in the bigs, I don't see a problem having him on our community list.
  3. The guy is strictly left handed hitting 1B depth at AAA - just like Sean Halton is our right handed hitting depth at AAA. He's only there in case Overbay gets hurt for an extended period.
  4. I was wondering about this. I wouldn't be surprised if every team is warned that injuries for Rule 5 guys will be really scrutinized. Otherwise, you'd think it would happen all the time.
  5. You have to start wondering if something is wrong with Smith. He was okay in June (3.16 ERA), but he's been awful in July. 4 walks, 9 runs in just 2 innings.
  6. Brewers have a .565 OPS in July - worst in baseball. 20 runs in 8 games. This slump is really on the hitters, although the pitching hasn't been good.
  7. Smith coming into the game: .436 OPS vs lefties .811 OPS vs righties
  8. Molina is a huge lost for the Cards. Not just his hitting or even his defense, but his handling of the staff. Those pitchers have had him as a security blanket for years. His lose affects all of those pitchers.
  9. Forgive my ignorance here, but are minor league salaries, Dominican league salaries set? Or could the Brewers give him 3,098,340 and then guarantee him a higher salary so that he ends up making up the difference over 3-4 years? I guess I would assume there are pretty strict limits on what you can play minor league players otherwise the entire bonus system and each teams allotment would be kind of pointless. But I'm just curious if there is any room to maneuver there? I assume there's some controls in place. Otherwise a team would simply give elevated guaranteed salaries to draft picks and international signings to circumvent the signing pools.
  10. He was not happy about that 2nd called strike. I don't blame him. It looked like a bad call.
  11. Hamels is a really good pitcher - and only 30 years old. He should have a few prime years left. Even with the hefty salary, he's going to cost some prime talent. Maybe not as much as Price, but still a lot.
  12. From the fan comments, it sounds like they're hoping for a LF. Obviously Davis, Braun and Gomez are safe, but how would everyone feel about trading Gindl for Ramirez? I've always liked Gindl, but with our current OF locked up for years and Haniger and Taylor on the rise, I don't think he has much of a future with the Brewers. I like Gindl, but I don't see him fitting in as anything other than a backup OF. Therefore, I'd have no problem letting him go for someone who can help us. I just don't know if anyone sees Gindl as anything more than a back up.
  13. Lara signed for $3.1 million according to the article. The Crew has $2,950,800 available. If my calculations are correct, we are slightly above the 5% overage if the numbers are exact. The team needs to give Lara under $3,098,340 to be below the 5% over mark (again, assuming my math is correct). I would imagine the contract is just south of the mark to avoid the 'no signing anyone for over 500k' penalty for next season. That's less than $2,000 difference between being over or being under the 500k mark. Of course, maybe they got another slot from someone. That would make things a lot simpler.
  14. I think at this point you wait until after the all star break. That's one more start for Estrada. Coming out of the break, you immediately move Estrada to the bullpen. You can then wait until the fifth game after the all star break - July 22 - to call up Nelson and put him into the rotation. This delays Nelson's arby clock for a couple of more weeks, and allows the team to have an extra arm in the bullpen for the first four games after the break. Assuming there are no injuries, you send down one of Kintzler or Wooten.
  15. Interesting to see the team take Jaime Garcia to task publicly for how has handled his injury. http://www.si.com/mlb/2014/07/07/st-louis-cardinals-jaime-garcia-john-mozeliak-thoracic-outlet-syndrome
  16. Another guy I would throw out is Gerardo Parra. He's not that cheap - $4.85 million this year and another year of arby available. But with the nagging injuries to Braun and Gomez this year, he could serve as a quality backup to all the OF spots. As a lefty, he could get some starts as well, plus pinch hit. As I mentioned, the team would still have control of the guy through 2015. If the Crew decided to keep him past 2014, they could then move Braun to 1B next year, and play Parra in RF. Of course, the team would have to feel Bruan at 1B would be a good idea (I happen to like it). The big issue is that Parra is not having a very good year this season. Last year he was great - 4.5 fWAR / 6.1 bWAR. This year he's around 0.0 WAR. I'm not sure if he's had any injury issues or what, but his numbers are down (.662 OPS after posting .726, .727 and .784 over the past few years). I always liked Parra. At worst, he's a great back up. He's won a gold glove (for what that's worth) and can play all the OF slots either very well (LF and RF) or competently (CF). At best he's a great defender with modest power. Parra isn't a game changer, but he's a been (prior to 2014) a solid player who would fill a need for this season (and maybe next). I'm not sure if his poor 2014 is just a fluke, but he's been much better in the past. He's only 27. Not sure what Parra would cost, but I don't think he'd break the bank since he's not a big name and having a down season.
  17. Crew, thanks for always posting these links. It's great. Just want you to know they are appreciated.
  18. Bronson Arroyo undergoing TJ surgery. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/bronson-arroyo-to-undergo-tommy-john-surgery.html Arroyo had nine straight seasons of 199 IP or more. Pretty amazing streak.
  19. Jimmy Nelson checks in at #38 on Baseball America's mid-season top 50. Nice to see a Brewer this high up. It's been a while. Cubs get three of the top 7 players and four players overall. Pirates also do great with 5 of the top 50 prospects. http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/midseason-top-50-injury-cant-knock-buxton-1/ Other division prospects: #2 - Kris Bryant, 3B,Cubs #5 - Addison Russell, SS, Cubs #7 - Javier Baez, SS, Cubs #20 - Robert Stephenson, RHP, Reds #21 - Tyler Glasnow, RHP, Pirates #24 - Jameson Taillon, RHP, Pirates #29 - Jesse Winker, OF, Reds #33 - Arismendy Alcantara, 2B, Cubs #35 - Josh Bell, OF, Pirates #37 - Nick Kingham, RHP, Pirates #38 - Jimmy Nelson, RHP, Brewers #43 - Austin Meadows, OF, Pirates #49 - Stephen Piscotty, OF, Cardinals
  20. The plan is to do another top 20 (or 25) in early August. We'll let the new picks get a little more time under their belts, and see if the trading deadline affects things.
  21. I have to admit that it would be really funny if Lucroy beat out Molina. Brewer fans have been voting in droves. And it can't hurt that Lucroy is getting talked up as an MVP (I think Tom Verducci at SI picked him as his first 1/2 MVP). Even a lot of casual fans don't like the Cardinals, so it's nice to pick someone else. Plus, you look at the numbers and Luc is killling it. That said, if Molina wins it's not a big deal. I think past performance can influence selections. I don't think that's bad, but it has to be reasonable. It's not like Molina has been mediocre for several years. He's been MVP caliber for the last few. If he wins, he's deserving on several levels. But it sure would be fun to have Luc win it.
