  1. I think people over play the 'pitching and defense' thing with SF. They actually hit really well. The Giants play in a park that suppresses offense. If you look at NL teams regular season batting on the road, SF has the most runs scored, the best BA, best OBP, and the best OPS. That's a good offensive team. They aren't a big HR team. But HRs doesn't always equate to good hitting. In SF, the Giants outhit their opponents in almost every major category - runs scored, OPS, BA, SLG, OPS. The only thing they trail in is HRs. Teams hit to a tune of .649 OPS in SF. This doesn't mean they don't have a top notch pitching staff, but I think people seriously underestimate the Giants hitters.
  2. I think Miggy will win it, but Trout deserves it more. The Triple Crown thing will go along way for Cabrera, plus the fact his team made the playoffs (that probably was the deciding factor for Braun's win last year over Kemp). I also don't think you can discount age for a handful of people. Trout's so young. He can easily get better. He's got a lot of years before him. Miggy is only 29, but he's got a few years of peak play left in him, compared to a dozen for Trout. So they'll throw him a bone now. The fact that Miggy played 161 games (compared to 139 for Trout) may sway a few voters as well. All of that will add up to a Cabrera win.
  3. 48. Trout. I wouldn't freak out if Miggy won it. He had a great year. i just think Trout had an amazing year.
  4. Think of it this way: if someone said you could have an exact replica of Trout's or Cabrera's 2012 season (offense and defense) for next year, which would you pick. I believe 9 out of 10 people pick Trout. Both players were amazing at the plate, but Trout's defense and base running make him the best player in the AL. If you want to give Miggy extra credit for his team making the playoffs, that's fine. Some people factor that in. But I think the vast majority of people would take Trout's performance over Miggy's. That doesn't diminish Cabrera's great season. It only shows how awesome Trout was.
  5. C - Lucroy and Maldonado 1B - Hart 2B - Weeks SS - Segura 3B - Ramirez LF - Braun CF - Gomez RF - Aoki OF - Schafer - can spell Gomez in CF against some righties OF - Right handed guy like Reed Johnson - can play both corner spots, even CF in a pinch. Gets some starts against lefties in RF. INF - Gamel - backs up 3B and 1B INF - Bianchi - backs up SS and 2B - this spot could easily go to someone else, but he's probably the best option at this point With Maldonado and the Reed Johnson-like OF you have two decent right handed hitters. Gamel and Schafer should provide the same from the left handed side. I like Reed Johnson because he's a solid bat against lefties (.822 OPS over the past three years, including .798 last year), plays decent defense at the corners, won't cost too much (probably around $1-1.5 million), and knows his role and does it well. The starting lineup is heavy on right handers, but if you mix in starts by Gamel and Shafer, that will help.
  6. Forgot Maldonado. You have four left handed backups. One of Green or Gamel has probably got to go since you need a back up SS.
  7. Rotation: Gallardo, Estrada, Fiers, a free agent (how about Anibal Sanchez), and one of Peralta/Rogers/Thornburg. Instead of a free agent, you could instead trade for a guy - sort of like Pittsburg did with AJ Burnett. Maybe get someone at a cut rate by picking up salary. Relievers: Axford, Henderson, Veras (I think he's shown enough to make me take a risk on him next year), Narveson (our new lefty in the pen), two of Peralta/Rogers/Thornburg, Kintzler and at least one decent free agent. You can also bring in me or two bargain free agents. Sometimes you can strike gold on a reclamation project. I'd probably let Loe and Parra go. Manny just seems in need of a change of scenery. Maybe find someone who will swap us their 'change of scenery' project. Loe just looks like he's not that good, and I don't think the team trusts him. Let K-Rod go.
  8. I like Sanchez too. Just a solid pitcher. He struggled at first in Detroit, but has really righted himself the last month or so. Overall, he's been a consistent arm the last few years, and would nicely fill an open position. Plus, he's young (29 next feb). I just worry a team like Boston will throw stupid money at him. Oh well, we shall see.
  9. Torts, thanks for the optomism. Nice that it lasted this long. I'm optimistic we'll have a winning record, but that's the best I can muster. How about starting a 2013 optimism thread.
  10. As a note, the Brewers control Gallardo for 3 more years. They hold a $13 million option for 2015.
  11. I'd say Reed Johnson would he a good fit.
  12. Another thing we have consider with adding a bigger name free agent is compensation. It's estimated that a qualifying offer will need to be around $13 million. Guys like Edwin Jackson, Kyle Lohse and Jake Peavy would cost the Brewers their 1st round pick in 2013 - assuming their current teams make the qualifying offer. Guys traded during the year, like Anibal Sanchez or Greinke are not able to garner a draft pick. I'm not sure how much he'll get, but I wouldnt mind the Crew make a run at Sanchez. However, I have a feeling that someone will go crazy and give him $15 million or more. Of course, we can check on Greinke, but I have a feeling we'll settle for a mid tier guy - maybe even bring back Marcum. Dan Haren would be interesting if his option isn't picked up. I do think the club will bring in someone.
  13. Man, marcum has looked awful of late. That was a terrible pitch.
  14. I thought I remembered that too. The Brewers seemed surprised they had won the bidding for him, and were not sure what they had with Nori. No matter - he's on our team and had a fine, fine year. I think his skillset should age pretty well, so (hopefully) he can continue to produce for a few more years. And the guy looks so happy all the time. Gotta love that.
  15. I have to repeat this post: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpyjObj3Hn4
  16. I'd say Peralta because of his youth, tools, upside and lack of injuries. He's had command issues, which is not uncommon for young pitchers. But if he can put it all together, he can be very good.
  17. Old school http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpyjObj3Hn4
  18. I am excited to just say the guy's name. Yorvit. How can you not smile after saying that. Yorvit
  19. I imagine this is a simple move to give us more flexibility in the last two weeks of the season. Having Torrealba simply allows the team to use Luc or Maldonado as a PH more readily.
  20. Another guy I'm going to throw out as an interesting possibility is Dan Haren. He has had a very average year, with a 4.41 ERA. Fangraphs puts his WAR at 1.5, while baseball reference has it at -0.5. He's giving up more hits. His Ks are down. He just turned 32 a few days ago, so he's not too old. But it is a time where injuries start emerging for guys like him. The Angels have a $15.5 million option for 2013 with a $3.5 million buyout. I haven't seen Haren pitch, so I'm more going on the 'old' Haren - who has had some great success over the last 7-8 years. If the Angels don't pick up the option, Haren might be willing to take a one year deal to re-establish his value. At this point, I think the Angels will pick up Haren's option if they can't resign Greinke (or add a different stop line starter). But there's a chance he'll hit the street. He would be a fascinating guy to add on a short term deal.
  21. For a guy like Bedard, it's all about money. If he's willing to do a minor league deal with incentives, he's not a bad option. If someone goes down in spring training, you have a guy that, prior to this year, has been effective - at least when healthy. The last bit is huge - when healthy. No way you sign a guy like him and give him a spot in the rotation. But as insurance, sure. Assuming you feel he's healthy and can rebound from a bad 2012.
  22. I think we've left 10 men on base. Gotta get more of those. Oh well, just shut down the pirates and make it a moot piont.
  23. it's great we have the lead, but we've certainly blown a lot of chances.
