  1. I think they just do it because that's the way it's always been done, and even though you have copious amounts of video, there are some teams that are going to want to have an eye on the guy. You're giving away potentially good players for a guy like Greinke, plus take on millions of dollars of cost. It probably makes teams comfortable to see a guy in person if they are going to take on that kind of investment. Another reason that a scout might be at a game is he is NOT just looking at Greinke or Hamels or whatever pitcher on the mound. In the case of the Brewers, they might be checking out other players such as Nyjer Morgan, K-Rod or whomever. With position players, the cameras aren't necessarily always pointed at them.
  2. Guess we can't argue much with it. Peralta and Bradley have struggled. Jungmann has been solid, but not spectacular.
  3. If Thornburg and Peralta show they are ready for the big leagues I'm all for bringing them up. I think both would have to show some consistent success for at least a short run - perhaps 5-10 starts - before I'd be comfortable bringing them up. But if they aren't ready, make them figure out their issues at AAA. Edit: I should add that if the Brewers suddenly go on a run and get back into the playoff race, and Wolf is still sucking a month or so from now - I'd have no problem giving the ball to Tyler or Willy - assuming each had earned their way to the spot.
  4. I'm beginning to think Livan was added to go into the rotation when (if) the Brewers become sellers. If this team goes on a selling spree, the likely candidates are Greinke, Marcum (assuming he's not hurt, and if he is hurt, he's not pitching, so the end result is he's gone), Wolf (assuming you can get anything for him -- even a $1 million of salary relief) - and then K-Rod in the pen. Maybe even Veras and Loe. If we dropped the three starters, that leaves the rotation as Gallardo, Estrada, Fiers... and then who? From the minors you could bring up Thornburg and Peralta - but I'd rather just wait until next year. No point in wasting them in a lost season. Livan would be a perfect guy to fill a spot for the rest of the year if you go on a purge.
  5. HiAndTight, there's a lot of info here - thanks. I agree, this is waving the white flag. Probably for at least 2012-13. But if we are going to surrender, i'd rather just clean house and get what we can for guys who won't be here. Getting a good, young SS is on everyone's mind, but I think just getting the BEST talent is as important. Sure, if a SS is there, go for it. But other than catcher, I don't think there's any position we couldn't use in coming years.
  6. Think he'll get nailed by MLB for it? The history he has is pretty bad. Hate to say it, but it might do him good. Let him sit for a while, call up Schafer to play for him.
  7. Reds walking in runs. I guess we shouldn't complain today.
  8. Think there's any chance the team just cuts ties with Nyjer? Find out if there's a trade market for him, and if not, just cut him. He's not helping the team. Just bring in Schafer and let the club know that poor fundamentals won't be tolerated.
  9. http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n601/reillymcshane/molina.png
  10. I haven't watched Corey play 1B a lot, but when I have, he seems like a natural. The big wingspan of his is awesome.
  11. walk a guy to get to joey votto - who's the tying run. brilliant.
  12. im guessing nyjer morgan's inability to hit LHP played into it. definitely not the right call, but maybe the line of thinking is "he's going to get out either way, maybe he can push a run across this way". Of course that would entail him getting the bunt down in the first place. In that case, we should have brought on one of our awesome right handed hitting pinch hitters. Like... let's see.... Brooks Conrad. Opps. My bad. Maysonet... no, at AAA. Ummm.... ummm.... Lucroy? Not quite yet. Ummmm.... Izturis...... Okay, maybe the bunt was the way to go. Was Ryan Braun available?
  13. A bit peculiar. Rock assuming Ron wanted more offense. Perhaps they are saving him incase of a trade. Another guess he may have had. okay, i can understand the saving him in case of the trade. you don't want him screwing up - borderline at the pitch count, etc. i actually can see how the team would do that.
  14. because our bullpen is so good, and the pitcher can't possibly throw more than 100 pitches in a game, especially someone as poor as Greinke.
  15. Why in god's name do a suicide squeeze with bases loaded? you've got two chances for a hit, a walk, a wild pitch, a deep fly ball -- it's not like it's guaranteed to work. sigh.
  16. how'd we get caught stealing home? A screwed up suicide squeeze?
  17. Speculation is starting to ramp up about Greinke. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/milwaukee-brewers-pitcher-zack-greinke-trade-deadline-062612 This is just the start of it. I imagine the feeding frenzy will begin if the Brewers fall out of the first by 10 games or more. At that point, you have to be realistic and say to yourself that if Zack doesn't resign, it's foolish to hang onto him. If you can get better than a comp pick, you're best dealing him.
  18. Also, Youkilis is playing really poorly. That, more than anything, probably made him unattractive.
  19. I wish they'd put him in relief. Get the guy to master two pitches and get consistent with them. If he could do that, it would be great. He doesn't seem to have developed any consistency as a starter. He throws so many pitches, he's maxed out after 5 innings. Perhaps I'm wrong on those counts. I'm just going to my looking at box scores. stats, and reading reports here and there. The club seems to holding out hope he'll develop into a starter, but the numbers just aren't there. I'm wondering if letting him focus on a couple of pitches, and getting through 1 or 2 innings, you could make him a more effective player. We certainly lack quality arms in the bullpen. If he could develop some modicum of consistency, he might become very valuable.
  20. i can't resist: http://www.swagnet.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Braun1.jpg
  21. Youkilis' is rather unfortunate, as it makes him appear rather pudgy.
  22. I saw this article on the boston.com site - pretty funny. A Youkilis t-shirt they dubbed 'ugliest shirt ever'. I have to agree, it's pretty hideous. http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/wilbur/youkt.jpg I thought this could spur some other terrible baseball shirts. You can't count Ryan Braun's shirts - as they aren't related to baseball. So please, add your ugly shirts. We can use some laughter this season.
