  1. The only way it happens if it he can keep producing for another 7-8 years, but that's not likely. His walks and HRs are awesome looking, but his batting average, terrible defense and sloth-like running skills take away so much of his value. Even saber-metric types aren't going to value him - Fangraphs has him as averaging less than 2.5 WAR a year - he's only got 25 WAR over 11 or 12 years. That isn't hall worthy. If he hangs out for 7-8 years and averages 30 HR, he could get to 600 HR. But that's a stretch. Guys like him to tend not to age well. Doesn't mean it won't happen, but even if he reaches 600 HR, he's going to have a sub-.250 BA. People will shake their heads at that. And they'll know he's been a DH/bad fielder all his career.
  2. It's like a Claudio Vargas start. awesome. made me laugh out loud.
  3. That is astounding. Kudos to Votto for turning up his game. Guy's been awesome.
  4. Totally agree on this. RRR has tried letting him play out of the slump. That's not working. He looks lost at the plate just as bad as he did a month ago. Give him a few days off. Tell him not to worry about baseball. Just relax. If the team is going to win this year, we need him to rebound. Flailing around at the plate isn't helping anyone right now. Give him a few days off. At this point, it can't hurt anyone.
  5. Gotta love a good story like this. He's probably on the all star team. First time at age 37 - pretty sweet.
  6. That would be stupid to do. Yes it loads the bases with one out, but you still have Wolf up. Maysonet should have been trying to bring in a run. oh well.
  7. I'm not watching the game live - just on ESPN's tracker. But why bunt Maysonet with a runner in scoring position and the pitcher up? I don't see the logic. Wolf is more likely to get an out, and then you're stuck with 2 outs. Any explanations? I don't understand, but perhaps I'm missing something.
  8. I feel the same way. I'm liking what Aoki brings to the team, at least with the bat. Gets on base, sees a lot of pitches. I haven't watched him enough to know how well he plays out in RF. He seems to cover ground pretty good. But that's from early impressions.
  9. Back in the 'old days' they called guys 'firemen' - not closers. Their job wasn't to close down the game, but to get the team out of tough situations. You do that in the 9th or 7th, it doesn't matter. That's when you want your best guy. However, I can see the advantage of set 'roles'. I remember Bud Black or someone other manager saying he felt the relief pitchers worked best when they knew their role in the game. Do I buy that? I don't know. To some extent. But I also think it's a crutch. Some guys might need the crutch more than others. Another point - teams might do well to break out of the 'closer' mentality if only for money. If Axford had 25 saves he gets paid a lot less than if he had 45.
  10. Losing a game in the 9th has an added emotional/mental crush to it than losing it in the 6th or 7th or whenever else. I think that's why it's become such a huge.
  11. Interesting article by Dave Schoenfield at ESPN. http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/25231/papelbon-phillies-once-again-not-clutch He talks about how overrated the 'closer' is. He notes that Papelbon has 15 saves - pretty impressive sounding. But then he points out that he's only protected three one-run leads. I agree with him when he says that having a deep bullpen is more important than an elite 'closer'. And I agree with him that you should use your best reliever in high leverage situations - not just a 'save' opportunity. I know RRR likes 'roles' in his system. Veras pitches 7th inning. K-Rod pitches 8th inning. Axford pitches 9th. Many people thrive on knowing their place (and not just in baseball). So I can't hold it against RRR, or any manager, who arranges his pen this way. But it is kind of ridiculous that we get so caught up in the 'closer' role, when often times the most important inning in the 7th or whenever.
  12. I am going to disagree with this one. Dillard is holding righthanders to a .148 BA and .493 OPS. Of course, he gets smoked by lefties - .433 BA and a 1.169 OPS. The key is Dillard has to be used properly. He is a ROOGY. He can't face lefties in key situations. Used properly, Dillard will produce. You can argue that we can't waste a roster spot on a ROOGY. That's a legit argument. If that's the case, then Dillard should be let go. But he is what he is. He can be very effective in limited situations. He just has to be used properly.
  13. I should have noted that I meant we could consider making a package deal to get rid of a bad contract or two.
  14. I think they'll use McClendon over the weekend and then send him back to AAA on Tuesday, and bring up Fiers to start Tuesday - which would be Marco's spot in the rotation. This gives you the extra arm in the pen for the next four days.
  15. If this team is out of it and we decide to deal Greinke, they could also consider contract dumps. A-Ram, even Weeks - if you're looking to completely rebuild and want to move long term committments. I'd hate to see that, but it's a possibility if the team feels we won't contend for a few years.
  16. Bush is destined to get picked up by some other team, get hammered left and right, except for one game against the Brewers, where he'll throw 6 or 7 innings and not allow any runs. Suppanesque.
  17. I wonder if they're bringing up McClendon for the weekend, then for Marco's nexts start, they simply option him again and bring up Fiers to start. It gives them an extra arm for the weekend. Fiers is starting tonight at AAA, and would be all ready to pitch on Tuesday - Marco's slot in the rotation. Can you option a guy as quickly as 5 days? Or do they have to stay in the bigs for a while?
  18. I thilnk the Brewers need to stick with Weeks. The reason is that if this team is to win in 2012 (yes, we still have a chance to rebound and get back into the race), then we need Rickie of 2010-11 to start showing up. And soon. You bench Rickie and you're playing Cody Ransom or Taylor Green or Eric Farris. It's unlikely those guys can produce like Weeks. We also need A-Ram to get moving. And some other guys. But Rickie is crucial to competing this year. The other guys are filler at this time. Also, even if you want to trade Weeks, its unlikely you get much for him now. Letting him rebound will let him regain value. That's my opinion on Rickie. Yes, he's played terrible this year. But you got to believe he can rebound. We've put our chips on Rickie (and A-Ram), and need those guys to produce for us to win this year.
  19. Rickie gets the 'worst at bat of the year' - http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/24742/rickie-weeks-has-worst-at-bat-of-season It's painful to read. Even worse to watch the strikeout. http://i.imgur.com/uOiNh.gif
