  1. Romero has a rep as being somewhat of a malcontent. Whether deserved or not, I don't know. Still, he should begin life as a full time loogy. Never let him face a righty - 1.000+ OPS against them last year.
  2. You know, I think Clark would fit well with the Cubbies. One year guy, better OBP than last year's leadoff man. Speed is not there, but Pierre, despite the speed, was a rag arm and not that good. He won't strike out a ton, which is something the Cubs said they wanted to cut down on.
  3. No Zach Jackson. Has he fallen so much? Not even an average prospect. I believe he's still a rookie, but perhaps I'm wrong. I didn't see Zach much last year, and only have his stats to analyze him. Thoughts?
  4. Hasn't McPhearson had back problems?
  5. Clint Barmes? I guess KC didn't want to give up Angel Berroa. Has Melvin taken a drug test lately? Barmes had the worst BA of ANY player in the bigs last year, and the second worst OPS - .598. And at Coors!
  6. I appreciate the thoughtfulness of the proposal, but I'd have to agree that we're just coughing up guys we don't really want. Mench, Clark and Tbow aren't worth a whole lot, and they are aren't exactly cheap. Colorado doesn't need a corner OF - no point in them having Mench. As someone said, they'd be far better off getting Slowey/Perkins and Crain for Jennings, then dealing for Clark for some thing small (because, quite frankly, at $3.8 million next year, we'd still probably have to kick in some $$$ on Clark's salary).
  7. Rowand and Lieber would be welcome players. Lieber would come in as a back of the rotation guy. Nothing more. But he's solid, and we only have to pay him for one year. Rowand would bring solid defense and aggressive baserunning. He's too much of a free swinger, but that's life. The team would be lacking left handed power if Jenks was dealt in this or any other deal. Prince is gold, but Koskie is the only proven lefthanded bat, unless you could Gross. If Gross could keep up his performance - .900+ OPS vs. righties, that would go a long way. Otherwise, our lefties aren't power guys - Estrada, Gwynn, Counsell. It would require some forward steps by Hardy, Weeks and Hart.
  8. The D-Rays are weird when it comes to their players. How long was Aubrey Huff on the trading block. Lugo? It took years - and I'm not joking - for those guys to be finally dealt. The Rays seem to wait, and wait, and wait, and wait - then finally pull the plug the last chance they get (and often diminishing their returns). They seem to always ask for the moon. Perhaps getting in in the Kazmir trade has made them think every GM is that stupid, and thus they keep waiting.
  9. Loretta for two years/$6 million sounds like a good deal for the Reds, assuming he takes it.
  10. I'd like Beltre for his superior defense, durability and solid bat. No, it's unlikely he's going to hit 40 HR, but he should be able to put up 25 HR and an .800+ OPS. The contract is the big thing -- I think $11.5 million this year and $12 million in 2008/09. Perhaps we are better off just going with a Koskie/Cirillo platoon, but I worry that age/injuries will erode their production. Still, if the club truly plans on keeping Braun at 3B, you go with the platoon and ignore Beltre. If, however, you are looking to move Braun to a corner OF spot, you could settle your 3B position for three years by getting Beltre.
  11. Bray was the one guy I didn't want to lose. Between 85 innings at AA and AAA, he struck out 75 and walked only 11. He had a 2.71 ERA at AA and a 1.27 ERA at AAA. He had a sub 1.00 WHIP. I don't really know that much about him other than his stats, but those are very good numbers. I wish he had at least gotten a chance this spring training, but I imagine someone will nab him and give him a try. I wouldn't be surprised if Zumwalt got a chance somewhere too. He got progressively better as the year went on.
  12. I doubt the Crew would ever consider it. The club still has a nice relationship with Hank Aaron, and all things considered, his bat probably doesn't offset his inability to run, play defense or be a positive influence in the clubhouse. But, man, he'd look nice batting third or fourth.
  13. I like Baldelli, but he's not without risk. First, missing a year and a half is a concern. His play last year, however, makes him look healthy. Still, you never know. But also he's another free swinger - rarely walks. He averages 25 walks per 500 ABs. Very Estrada-esque. Add in Hall, Weeks, possibily Jenks, you're talking about a lot of guys who like to take a whiff. Again, not that I wouldn't take him. He looks like he'll be a good player, and at a premium position. I guess for a promising, but not super high level guy like Carlos V., and Latin Cappy, it would be a reasonable deal. Aquino is just a guy at this point - don't really know that much about him, but he looks average. Perhaps I'm wrong there, as I don't know much about him. We'd definately need another starting pitcher if we did the deal, otherwise we'd be relying on Zach Jackson, Hendrickson or Yo to be in the rotation (and that's not even factoring injuries). Perhaps we could get them to take on a salary - say Clark. Just a thought.
  14. Thanks much, Toby. We appreciate it.
  15. The dude has moxie. Kudos if he can back it up. Gotta love the confidence.
  16. Zaun would be a great addition. I doubt the Brewers are going to make a big signing - no Schmidt for $15 million/year, no Soriano, etc. But they could make some important additions. Zaun would be a guy like that. Zaun, Lofton, relief pitcher or two (David Weathers?), resign Graffy, etc. Perhaps we could make a deal for a 'down' player - Beltre, Burrell, etc. But more likely, adding some parts and count on improvements from the young and talented players. Weeks, Hardy, Prince, Bush, Hart, Capellan, Eveland and Carlos V are 25 and under. Cappy, Bush and Sheets are only 28, 27 and 28. Hall is only 26. This team should improve. Adding some extras can do wonders - especially if we stay healthy.
  17. I read the Rockies were interested in your man Burke. If Jennings is really being shopped, he could be a key part of the package.
  18. I'm reading that, ultimately, Roberts will probably get 3 years/$15 million. With Pierre off the market, it trims CFs down to Roberts and Matthews, and Matthews likely get near $10 million from someone (Giants?). It just takes one team to make things go bonkers. It's what it took us to get Damien Miller two years ago. No one else would go 3 years. Might be what it takes to make it happen.
  19. Fox is saying Pierre to the Dodgers too. msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6191380
  20. Could Carlos be a $90 or even $100 million man? Now with Soriano off the market, someone may freak out and offer Carlos 6 years at $15 million per. Would they be insane to 7 years? Or six years and $16 million? I don't think it's out of the question. The Orioles are the ones who could do that, since they know they can eventually move him to DH. I doubt Houston would go that high or that long. But then who thought Soriano would get eight years. Never know.
  21. Yes, you're correct. Salary relief is nice, but it has to make sense for them. I'd say starting pitching is their greatest need. They lost Meche and Moyer is finally gone. Piernero was terrible last year. Perhaps give them Zach Jackson. They could move Ichiro to CF, leave Ibanez in left and put Jenks in right. Maybe we could score Jeremy Reed back if the team feels he could help (not sure I want him, but I thought he was going to be a quality player when he first came up). I feel like they're not getting much, but it does free up a lot of salary post 2007, and give them a young pitcher they need. Who would play 3B for the Mariners is another question. Perhaps send them Koskie. Maybe they have a young player ready. All just silly speculation.
  22. I'd look at the Beltre idea like this -- if he was a FA that required no compensation, what would he be worth? Beltre is: - an above average defender - a workhorse - 156 games or more for 5 straight years - still young - 27 - a guy who should hit you 20-25 HR - might benefit greatly from a change of scenery I'd estimate he'd get in the $8-9 million range. Thus, he is overpaid by about $3-4 million a year - or a total of up to $12 million. So, let's take what we have extra of - an OF in Jenkins - send him and his $7.5 million to Seattle. Let's either get another $4-5 million back - or perhaps make them take on salary (T-Bow is making $5.1 million over the next two years, or perhaps Clark and Koskie - that's $5.8 million). We'd have our 3B for the next three years. We'd be able to move Braun to LF for this season, so he can learn the position at AAA. We'd add speed, defense and reliability at the position. I don't expect him to his 40 HR - or even 30 - but if he can get 25 a year and get that .800 OPS, I'd feel he's a quality addition. My opinion.
  23. Rosenthal is saying Garland is close to go being traded. Texas is the likely destination. Perhaps elements including Danks for Garland/Anderson. Story Edited my mixing up of players.
