  1. Scranton / Wilkes-Barre (Phillies) 8, Indianapolis 1 All the good vibes from the just-completed road trip pretty much wiped out in one fell swoop... Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- Behind a masterful eight-inning pitching performance by Amaury Telemaco, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons (33-33) defeated the Indianapolis Indians 8-1 Thursday night at Victory Field. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Indians (27-37), who managed only three hits off Telemaco and six in the game. Telemaco (4-6) gave up a lead-off double to Jason Conti in the bottom of the first inning, then went on to record 18 straight outs in cruising to the victory. It was the third straight solid outing for Telemaco, who has given up only one run in his last three appearances covering 23.0 innings (0.39 ERA). Scranton roughed up Tribe starter Ben Ford in the third inning, scoring five runs after there were two outs. Damon Minor did the initial damage with a two-run single scoring Josue Perez and Jason Knupfer. After a walk to Kevin Sefcik, Eric Valent took Ford (0-2) deep for a three-run shot that gave Telemaco more than enough support. The Indians managed to get only two base runners as far as second base against Telemaco, before Jim Crowell entered the game in the bottom of the ninth. Crowell gave up one run, on an RBI ground out by Pete Zoccolillo, and allowed three hits in his one inning of work. Newly signed Joe Roa made his first appearance in a Tribe uniform when he relieved Ford in the top of the seventh inning. Roa pitched one inning allowing two hits including a solo home run by Chase Utley. The Indians and Red Barons will continue the four-game series at Victory Field on Friday night when Pasqual Coco (5-4, 4.90) faces Scranton's Ryan Madson (4-3, 3.19). Friday night also marks the first visit to Victory Field of the season for the San Diego Chicken. Indianapolis Box Score: Not a single walk drawn by Tribe batters, either... 2. Huntsville 6, Birmingham (White Sox) 5 Congratulations to the Stars! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif In an odd web audio choice tonight, I tried to bring some listening love to High Desert -- it's not working, by the way. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif Mavs' announcer Mike Lindskog kept fans posted on Huntsville all evening, and is taking pleasure in recalling the contributions the Huntsville kids made while in Adelanto. I'm sure Robert Portnoy had a great call in Alabama this evening, and here's hoping the Stars enjoy themselves tonight! Huntsville Box Score: Nice to have another corner OF prospect in Varner; you have to love it when Krynzel, Hardy and Hart all draw walks, Corey twice... 3. Indianapolis Media Notes for Thursday: TONIGHT: The Indians open an eight-game homestand with the first game of a four-game series with Scranton/W-B. The Indians are coming off a four-game sweep of Syracuse. It was the Tribe's third series sweep of the season, but their first four-game sweep since April 9-12, 2002. The Indians outscored the SkyChiefs 30-13 and outhit them 53-38. The Indians have won four in a row for the second time this season (April 9-12). A win tonight would give the Indians their longest winning streak since a seven-game streak Aug. 14-20, 2002. The Indians have won nine of their last 11 games which represents their best stretch this season. The four-game sweep on the road gives the Tribe a seven-game road winning streak. That ties two other streaks (Aug. 1-7, 1997 and Aug. 8-17, 2000) for the longest road winning streak during the Victory Field era. The Indians welcome Scranton to Victory Field for their only visit of the season. The Tribe went 5-3 against the Red Barons last year. The teams split the four games played in Indianapolis. Since joining the IL in 1998, the Indians are 23-17 against Scranton during the regular season. The Tribe has won the season series in 1998, 1999 and 2002, split the series in 2000, and lost the series in 2001. Scranton is managed by former Indians skipper Marc Bombard (1993-95). HOMESTAND HIGHLIGHTS: Scooby Doo is at the ballpark tonight while The San Diego Chicken makes his first visit on Friday. Saturday is the second Fireworks Night of the season. On Sunday, the first 4,000 fans will receive a Cecil Cooper Bobblehead Doll, and a group of fathers and sons will play catch on the field before the game. Monday is the annual Star Youth Clinic. ROSTER MOVE: The Indians have signed righthanded pitcher Joe Roa. He was the IL's Pitcher of the Year last season with the Red Barons. TUESDAY: Travis Miller and Dan Kolb combined to shut out Syracuse 4-0 as the Indians swept the series. Miller has won his last three starts and has given up just one run in his last 17.1 innings. He worked a season-high 7.1 innings Tuesday. Jim Rushford and Pete Zoccolillo each had three hits for the Indians while Doug Jennings drove in two runs with two sacrifice flys. ON THE MOUND: Righthander Ben Ford makes his third appearance and second start for the Indians since joining the team on May 31. His start came on June 6 against Toledo. He took the loss as the Tribe was shutout. Ford allowed three runs over five innings. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Ford was in spring training with Minnesota, but was released on March 28. He signed with Milwaukee in May and spent two weeks working out in Arizona before joining the Indians. Ford has not batted this season, but went 3-for-20 (.150) last year. REUNION: The series with Scranton will reunite two members of the Indians 1994 American Association Championship team. Tribe first baseman Doug Jennings was the MVP of that team after hitting .296 and leading the team with 77 R, 92 RBI, 34 2B and 72 BB. Red Barons manager Marc Bombard was the skipper of the Indians in 1994. MAKING AN IMPACT: Jennings has made quite an impact in his first four games since signing with the Indians on June 6. He is hitting .429 with two doubles, one triple and two home runs. He has scored six times while driving in 10 runs. At the start of the season, it took 21 games before the Indians had a player with 10 RBI. WHAT A RELIEF: In the last 12 games, the Tribe relief corps has allowed just eight earned runs in 49.0 innings (1.47 ERA). 'KOLB' AS ICE: Opponents are hitting a frigid .182 against Tribe reliever Dan Kolb. Kolb has recorded a 1.24 ERA in 24 games allowing five earned runs in 36.1 innings. Kolb has struck out 39 batters in his last 27.2 innings (16 G). He was selected as the Brewers minor league pitcher of the month for May after recording a 1.47 ERA with 22 strikeouts and just three walks in 18.1 innings. LUULOA'S BAT STAYS HOT: Keith Luuloa, who hit .304 with 14 RBI in May, continues to swing a hot bat. In 16 games since May 25, he is hitting .393 (22-for-56) with 14 runs scored and 15 RBI. He has eight doubles, three triples and four home runs for a .786 slugging percentage. He is riding a personal-high, seven-game hitting streak. Luuloa was overlooked for IL Batter of the Week honors this past week despite hitting .476 with a 1.095 slugging percentage and 8 RBI. He helped the Tribe go 5-2 with three multi-hit games and three-multi-RBI games. WHAT A RUSH: Jim Rushford has been on a tear putting back-to-back nine-game hitting streaks together in hitting safely in 19 of his last 21 games. Rushford signed with the Tribe on May 15, and after going hitless in his first four games and 10 at-bats, has broken out in a big way. Over the last 21 games, Rushford is hitting .377 (29-for-77). Rushford was the Tribe's MVP in 2002. UPCOMING PROBABLES: Friday vs. Scranton/WB - RHP Ryan Madson (7-3, 3.19) vs. RHP David Manning (4-3, 3.34) Saturday vs. Scranton/WB - RHP Josh Hancock (4-6, 4.74) vs. RHP Pasqual Coco (5-4, 4.90) Sunday vs. Scranton/WB - RHP Ken Pumphrey (4-4, 6.46) vs. RHP Dave Burba (4-6, 4.76)
  4. Mainly a reminder for colbyjack -- The wood bat Cape Cod League gets underway this week, and it seems there might be a potential for a couple of unsigned draft picks to accept late invitations, although even that seems unlikely. If they don't sign, 23rd round pick Jon Mungle, the Mississippi State outfielder, and 25th rounder Jared Theodorakos, a LHP out of Baylor, would seem to be the only candidates for a late roster spot. Wareham's the site which I'll hope to take in a game or two once again this summer, colby. I'm sure you've been scanning those Cape rosters -- we'll get you and your wife out here on a scouting trip yet -- shopping, beaches, and baseball. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

  6. Latest from Tuscon: Another elite-level recruit that Univ. of Arizona baseball coach Andy Lopez is likely to lose is Catalina Foothills catcher Bryan Opdyke, a fifth-round pick of Milwaukee. The catcher is seeking about $800,000 to sign. The Brewers opened at about $350,000. Ultimately, even if Opdyke and the Brewers don't come to terms, he is unlikely to fulfill his letter of intent to Arizona. The Wildcats are set at catcher for two more years with rising star Nick Hundley. Opdyke's best option, other than Milwaukee, is probably at JC power Central Arizona College.

  10. David Weiser's Huntsville Report: RICKWOOD CLASSICThis was not to be the day, but the Stars, having to endure more than one spoiler, would see their magic number reduced to one. The Diamond Jaxx lost to Mobile, again by a 5-4 score, so both the Barons and the D'Jaxx are four games in back of the Stars........ The Barons' eccentric right-hander, Tetsu Yofu, a minor league version of Hideo Nomo, was in total control, nearly perfect through 5 innings, facing the minimum 15 batters, allowing just a single and a walk........ Yofu was no match for Mother Nature, though, as gusts blew rain horizontally through the ballpark in the top of the 8th with Daryl Clark on first via a leadoff single, and Noochie Varner at bat against reliever Rob Purvis...... The winds were working against the tarp crew, blowing so badly, the tarp blew over their heads and onto the Barons' dugout. Even the Blues Brothers, who were making an appearance on this special day at historic Rickwood Field, came out on the field to lend a hand....... Yofu, his day done, decided to have a little fun. I told you he was eccentric. He came running out on the field, not to help secure the tarp, but to take a running start and slide on the rain-soaked surface directly into a mud puddle. I'm sorry I didn't take a day off to see this....... I remember an incident similar to this at the Joe many years ago when Scott Brosius decided to come out and take a slide on the wet tarp after BP. I remember someone chewed him out for it on the spot, but I don't know if anyone explained it to Yofu that his behavior can get you fined. The Stars had better luck against Yofu before........ They beat him once in a relief role, April 20, and again, 3-2, in a start on May 27, but Yofu still had a respectable 3.86 ERA in three prior appearances...... This time, the Stars did not have a runner in scoring position through 5 2/3 innings, with Yofu leading, 2-0....... Finally with two outs in the top of the 6th, Mike Kremblas ripped a double down the left field line. Ryan Knox singled him over to third. Dave Krynzel singled Kremblas in, pushing Knox to third. J.J. Hardy lined out to left, and that was as close as the Stars would come........ In the bottom of the inning, Scott Bikowski would reach on a ground ball booted by Richard Paz, only his 6th error of the season........ Elvis Pena, who was used mostly at 2nd base last year, had nine at this same juncture........ Darron Ingram followed with a single to right and Bikowski raced to third, making it safely as the throw was wide to Corey Hart. Varner was charged with the Stars' second error of the inning....... Jon Acevas stepped up and delivered a 2-run double making it 4-1 and moved to third on Guillermo Reyes' sacrifice bunt........ Chad Durham next hit a sharp ground ball up the middle. J.J. ranged over to smother it with a dive. From his knees, Hardy fired to throw Durham out, but Acevas scored to make it 5-1......... Mike Jones lost his first game since April 17 against Orlando. For the game, the Barons wore uniforms of the 1983 Championship team, who posted an all-time Southern League home record of 57-16. An auction for the jerseys was held throughout the game with a portion of the proceeds going to the restoration of Rickwood Field. For Huntsville, the Stars wore their 1985 tops, with the Stars logo emblazoned across the chest, not much more different than the tops they have worn throughout their history until this year........ The very first game in Stars history was in Birmingham on April 12th at Rickwood Field, with the Barons winning a 15-12 slugfest . At least one run was scored in every half-inning of that game until Jesus Pena was able to retire the Stars without a run in the top of the 7th. Jose Canseco homered that night for the Stars and Rob Nelson, who that year established the Stars home run record with 32, had his first two. As part of the festivities, the Barons have invited back several players from the era. The group of returning players and coaches included single-season home run leader Rondal Rollin, who drove in 12 runs against the Stars during the 1987 Western Division Playoffs, manager Roy Majtyka, infielder Scottie Earl and pitchers Chuck Cary and Mark Smith......... There was also be a special presentation to former Barons owner Art Clarkson who returned baseball to Birmingham in 1980, after buying the former Montgomery Rebels and moving them there. The Stars and Barons wrap up this series back at Hoover Met, Thursday night........ Jeff Robinson will make his second start against Mitch Wylie (1-0, 4.15). Ryan Knox's batting average has hovered between .242 and .248 for over a week, but if want to give an award for consistency, Dave Krynzel, who has kept his average over .300 since May 23, has stayed between .312 and .314 for six straight days.

  12. Visalia (Rockies) 16, High Desert 6 There's really no way to sugarcoat what's happening with this Maverick team any more... High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? The Visalia Oaks posted season high numbers with 21 hits and 16 runs on the way to a 16-6 rout of the High Desert Mavericks Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium. The Oaks jumped on Mavericks starter Brian Mazone early with three runs in the first inning and four more in the third. Mazone (0-7) was hung with the loss after giving up seven runs, all earned, on 11 hits while only working three innings. Justin Lincoln put the exclamation point on Visalia?s huge offensive night by smashing a grand slam in the eighth inning off Mavs reliever Tommy Marx. Dan Phillips led the way for the Oaks with a five-hit night, including a pair of doubles and four RBIs. Jayson Nix also added four hits into the mix. All nine Visalia starters recorded at least one hit and one run on the evening. The Mavericks spread out 16 hits of their own, including a season-best four-hit night for Todd West, a three-hit night for Jason Belcher, and two-hit nights for Scott Candelaria, Brian Foster and Ozzie Chavez. Froilan Villanueva connected for his second homer of the year in the second inning. It's the first home run for the Mavs in a week, and the first at home in their last 10 games. Nick Webb (2-0) earned his second victory of the year by throwing five innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, while striking out four and walking two. The Mavs have now dropped four straight and are now 17 games under the .500 mark for the first time this year at 24-41. Danny Kolb (3-5) takes the hill for the Mavs against Michael Esposito (5-3) of the Oaks on Thursday night at 7:05 (9:05 Central) at Mavericks Stadium. High Desert Box Score: We've held off on reporting this all season, but each week SportsTicker has listed the highest ERA qualifier in all the minors, and it's been LHP Brian Mazone all along. May we suggest a move to the pen at least? We are counting the days until the second half of the California League season begins, as if that will magically help this club... Lewis, who just completed his final season with TCU, will fly to Montana Sunday to begin play in the Pioneer League short season. "Playing professional baseball has been my dream since I played my first game, I guess when I was about five years old," Lewis said Friday while making a brief stopover in Texarkana. "I'm as excited as I can be and I'm just glad as I can be that I can share this with my parents." Lewis, the son of William Lewis Sr. and Mattlene Miller, was drafted by the Brewers in the 32nd round Wednesday. The Brewers sent a scout to Fort Worth Thursday and Lewis signed Thursday night. After making all-state as a senior at Arkansas High in 1999, Lewis was overlooked by major college teams and signed with Seminole Junior College in Seminole, Okla., where he was Defensive Most Valuable Player in the Junior College World Series as a freshman and a junior college All-America selection as a sophomore. After Seminole he signed with TCU and started every game for the Horned Frogs for the past two seasons. This past season he committed just two fielding errors at second base while hitting .337 with 37 runs, 15 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 55 runs batted in. "I felt like I should have been drafted higher (than the 32nd round), Lewis admitted. "But it's been that way all my career. I think I've been overlooked a lot, but all that doesn't matter now. "I don't' care what round I was drafted in or how much money I got to sign, I'm just glad to have a chance to prove myself at the professional level. All the rest will come to me if I take care of business like I have in the past."
  14. 19th round pick RHP Ty Taubenheim Local Story: Assigned to Arizona Rookie, profile discussed above... news.bellinghamherald.com...3366.shtml Looks like the archive is available for two weeks, so here's the cut-and-paste: Mike Allende, The Bellingham Herald Ty Taubenheim hasn't swung a bat in a couple of years, but he may want to get to a batting cage in the near future. Taubenheim, the former Lynden High School three-sport star, was drafted by the National League's Milwaukee Brewers in the 19th round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft Tuesday. By 6 p.m., he had already signed with the club. "It's very exciting," said Taubenheim, a 6-foot-5, 235-pound 20-year-old right-handed pitcher. "It's just awesome. It's really an honor and I'm greatful to have this opportunity." Taubenheim, who led Edmonds Community College to two straight Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championships, was the 549th player selected. It's not a surprise that it was Milwaukee that called his name. Brandon Newell, a former Nooksack Valley High star who served as the Bellingham Bells' pitching coach the last three seasons, is the area scout for the Brewers. Newell called Taubenheim at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday with the news. "We knew he wanted to play, and we felt he was physically ready to play," Newell said. "When parties keep the line of communication open like we did, things go smoothly." Two other former Bells were drafted Tuesday, the first day of the draft. Emerson Frostad, a third baseman from Lewis and Clark State, was taken in the 13th round, 376th overall, by the Texas Rangers, and right-handed pitcher Joe Carque of San Diego State was taken in the 20th round, 606th overall, by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Taubenheim starred in football, basketball and baseball at Lynden, and accepted a scholarship to the University of Washington, prompting teams to pass on him when the draft came up in 2001. A mixup with a class he had taken at Lynden led Taubenheim to be declared ineligible at the UW, and he went to Edmonds, where he was the winning pitcher in last year's NWAACC title game. Following last season, the Oakland Athletics used a late-round pick on him, but he chose not to sign. Instead, he spent the summer pitching for the Bells. Oakland retained his rights until last week. "They didn't really have any intention of signing me, and I didn't have any intention of signing," Taubenheim said. "It was more a draft-and-follow situation." After another solid year, Taubenheim's stock grew. He is valued for his body size (ideal for a pitcher) and his athleticism. "You look at his frame and athleticism, that's the first thing that catches your eye," Newell said. "And he competes really well on the mound. "But what I really like to know is what makes a guy tick. I like to know how they react when they're struggling, and how they react when things are going well. "He's going to be playing more baseball than he's ever played now, and there will be times when he's tired, and it's 100 degrees out, and he won't feel like pitching. I want to know that he'll get through that and go out there and compete. Ty has that; he has a real fire." Newell wouldn't discuss financial terms of Taubenheim's contract, saying only that it was fair money for a 19th-round pick. As part of the contract, Taubenheim receives a scholarship to any in-state school he wants. Newell expects Taubenheim to be sent to either the Helena Brewers, a rookie-league team in Montana, or the Beloit Snappers, a Class A team in Wisconsin. First, Taubenheim will report to the Brewers' mini-camp for early signees in Arizona, probably next week. "It's a good place for kids to go to learn the organization and become acclimated to what life is going to be like," Newell said. "I think that Ty is physically and emotionally ready to make that step." So does Taubenheim. "I always felt like I'd get to this point, I just didn't know when," he said. "I've been given this opportunity, and I want to go for it. I'm anxious to get on with it."
  15. Hope everyone is enjoying the local newspaper stories as much as we enjoy tracking them down. We'll be in contact with the Helena front office to make sure they get their background info on these kids just as we are. At least we'll be able to put some story info and match them up with the names in the box scores. It's truly a shame that the Helena broadcasts won't be available from a Brewer perspective online; at least we believe that will be the case. With the Mountain time zone and all, the games would have provided some nice late night entertainment, as the Ogden webcasts did in seasons past. We've asked the Helena staff to inform all the players and their families about Brewerfan.net as well. Nice lengthy story on 24th round OF Drew Anderson, whose profile was provided earlier in this thread: (I don't trust this link to remain active long-term, so here's a cut-and-paste version...) Brewers send Anderson to HelenaBy CHRIS BASNETT Hub Sports Writer KEARNEY, NEBRASKA - Drew Anderson knows where he's going to start his trek towards the major leagues, he just doesn't know a lot about it. "I just heard it's real pretty up there," Anderson said with a laugh. "That's about all I know." "It" is Helena, Mont., home of the Helena Brewers, the advanced rookie league team for Major League Baseball's Milwaukee Brewers. Anderson left Kearney today to report to Helena and his first professional baseball assignment. Anderson signed with the Brewers after being taken on the second day of the Major League Baseball Draft in the 24th round. He was the 799th overall pick. "I didn't really think I would get taken the first day and then I talked to a couple scouts that day and then the next morning and they said 'don't worry, you're going to get drafted,'" Anderson said. "Soon enough, it was early in the morning, I get drafted at like 11:30. It was pretty awesome." Awesome, and somewhat surprising. Anderson started much of his sophomore season for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and had a solid summer with the Anchorage Glacier Pilots of the Alaska Baseball League, a wooden bat summer league. In 34 games there, he hit .328 with three home runs and 24 RBIs. Once he returned to Nebraska for his junior season however, the starts and the numbers began to decline. Anderson started only 28 games this year after starting 47 as a sophomore. He saw his batting average dip from .266 to .238. The Huskers' season was ended by upstart Southwest Missouri State in the Lincoln Regional, marking the first time in Anderson's career he wouldn't make the trip down I-80 to play in the College World Series. "I didn't really know, going into the draft, whether or not I was going to get taken," Anderson said. "I knew teams were interested, but I didn't know exactly if I was going to get the opportunity because I didn't have that good of a year." Anderson would have had the chance to improve his numbers as one of four outfielders on the Huskers' 2004 roster, but the opportunity to play professional baseball was too much to pass up. "Who knows if I'm ever going to get this opportunity if I come back to school and I don't have a good year," Anderson said of his decision. "It's just a dream that I've had, and after next year I'm going to be 23. I'll be getting pretty old to try and give it a realistic shot." Anderson leaves Nebraska with no hard feelings, calling his decision to leave the Cornhuskers "tough" after helping lead the program to its first two College World Series appearances. "I've had a great time at Nebraska. I've grown close to the coaching staff, and we went to the College World Series two of the three years I was there," Anderson said. "I knew if I came back and played to my capabilities I could be an everyday starter." As it is, Anderson will be at the bottom rung of the Brewers' organization trying to make his way to the A or AA level with Milwaukee's other draft picks. He is unsure of what position he will play, but scouts have told him it will be either left or right field. Anderson could see his first professional action June 23, when the Brewers open a seven-game homestand with a four-game series against the Casper Rockies. Helena is a member of the Pioneer League, playing in the North Division. All four North Division teams are in Montana while the South Division is home to two teams in Utah and one each in Wyoming and Idaho. Anderson is the first Kearneyite since Mike Asche to be taken in the Major League Baseball Draft. Asche played for the University of Nebraska at Kearney and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1992. "I think it was just my time," Anderson said. "I think I need to go out and have a chance to play every day and get better and give it a shot."
  16. Another local draft day / signing story, this one on 16th round LHP Mitch Stetter, out of Indiana State -- his profile is discussed earlier in this thread... www.myinky.com/ecp/local_...01,00.html Not sure how long local links will remain valid, but for now, each can be added to the main Brewerfan Draft page. Mitch Stetter will head for Big Sky Country on Sunday. Stetter, a Southridge High School graduate who recently completed his senior season at Indiana State University, has signed a contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. The 6-foot-4 lefthander, who was drafted by the Brewers in the 16th round of the Major League First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday, will be assigned to their rookie league affiliate in Helena, Mont. "I will be going to a five-day or seven-day camp and start up the 17th in short-season rookie league ball," Stetter said. A muscle strain kept him sidelined most of his senior year, but he came on to post 1-0 record with a 3.38 earned run average in 12 appearances, all in relief. He considered redshirting, but he wanted to go out with seven other seniors and hoped to play in the NCAA Tournament. Although the Sycamores finished 36-22 overall, they ended just 15-17 in the Missouri Valley Conference. "I probably had the best stuff since I had been at school the second half of the year," said Stetter, who was upset he wasn't selected in the 2002 draft. "It worked out for me." He participated in a predraft camp at Miller Park the Saturday before this year's draft. "Each pitcher would throw for three outs and I got a couple of strikeouts," Stetter said. "That went well, for sure. I was happy with the chance to go the first day (of the two-day draft). I'm real pleased. I felt it would be a second-day deal."

  22. The Brewers have signed 32-year-old RHP Joe Roa to a minor league contract, and he has been assigned to Indianapolis. Roa cleared waivers from the Phillies earlier in the week. Roa has established himself as a premier minor league pitcher. As a stopgap, he certainly provides a fine starting option for Indy. Beyond that, he could not embarass himself any more than Glendon Rusch, and to a lesser extent, Ruben Quevedo, have, in Milwaukee, once his arm is stretched a bit at AAA. Looks to be a smart signing for both player and team. 25. Huntsville Site Game Summary: www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=95 David Weiser's Huntsville Update: IT'S DOWN TO 2It was a nail-biter....... For eight innings, the Stars squandered scoring opportunites, while trying to hold down an equally determined Birmingham team, doing their best either to avoid elimination or forestall the inevitable, but in the end, the Stars won reducing their magic number to 3, then 2, as the Bay Bears polished off the Diamond Jaxx in Jackson, Tennessee, 5-4. The edge of your seat contest included eight errors --- more costly to Birmingham than it was to Huntsville --- 21 hits, 20 runners left on base, more drama than a movie mystery, and an eyeful of defensive gems....... In the top of the 7th, Barons center fielder Chad Durham made a spectacular, sprawling diving catch between two other fielders to rob Richard Paz of a hit, preventing two runs from scoring....... The Stars clung to a 3-2 lead in the 7th inning, when Birmingham tried to pull off a squeeze play, but reliever Matt Childers rushed in to make the play then made an unbelievable glove-flip of the ball to Kade Johnson to get the tying run out at the plate....... Those were two of the best plays I never saw, but it didn't outnumber the sloppiness that pervaded the game. There were mental errors as well as physical ones. Though it looked as if the Stars took the life out of the Barons in the 9th inning, their four-run rally proved critical........ With the bases loaded and two out, Johnson ripped a 2-run single to right giving the Stars a 5-2 lead. Despite a .164 average, Kade has driven in 6 runs this month........ Noochie Varner followed with a 2-run single of his own, and it was 7-2......... Varner is now 10-for-24 (.417) in his last six games, with 4 RBIs and 5 runs scored........ But Birmingham came back as Mike Adams tried to close the door in the 9th....... With Ryan Hankins representing the tying run at the plate, Adams fanned him on his nasty back-door slider and got a pop out from another dangerous hitter, Gabe Alvarez....... The former Huntsville Star was carrying a .353 average against Stars pitching coming into the game. With Neal Cotts on the disabled list and the Mudcats awaiting Wednesday to finish a suspended game, denying Sean Fesh of the chance for a victory, Derek Lee is all alone among the win leaders in the Southern League, his 39th win as a Huntsville Star........ In the General's 11-win season of 2000, he didn't get his 8th win until July 28th. Could Derek possibly become the Stars' first 14-game winner by the end of the season?....... Ryan Knox broke into the Stars' Top Ten Stolen Base leaders with his 22nd of the season, tonight. He now has 47 in his career with Huntsville, tying him with Chad Green and Mickey Lopez....... How blessed can the fans of Huntsville get? J.J. Hardy is hitting .318, Corey Hart .311, and Dave Krynzel .314. Hart is 10-for-20 in his last six games and Krynzel is hitting .324 in June. Hardy and Krynzel should be on the lower rungs of the Top 10 batting leaders in the league, but I haven't seen an update yet. Tomorrow the Stars and Barons will play in the annual Rickwood Classic at Rickwood Field, the oldest ballpark still being used in this state. Both teams will wear throwback jerseys --- the Stars reviving the 1985 look, which prior to this year, hadn't evolved too much and the Barons going back to their 1983 season, when they won a league record 57 home games....... Mike Jones (6-1, 2.39) will start for Huntsville, who has a shot to clinch the 1st half tomorrow if the Diamond Jaxx lose. I would rather see them clinch at home on Friday, but que sera sera.
