Oh, I’ll celebrate that….. come now. And I should be upset for Hiura and the batting lineup of Winker/Adames/Rowdy hitting #2-4 half the season and the almost 2 dozen players at DH not named Hiura who we would have liked to hit DH with Hiura’s 2022 numbers.

That Winker postseason AB….after six weeks of not seeing MLB pitching. And not even being on the team! And the season he had on top of it. And the Boooooos…for Counsell.

You mean Winker, right? You cannot mean Hiura. “Every opportunity” you wrote in the English language, correct?

Ah…..yeah. Hiura got paid MLB money to hit well in AAA while we failed to do much of anything at his positions of DH or 1B until mid August or so. And they tried umpteen people to the point of embarrassment. And my hope is that if/when he hits, he is given regular at bats in a regular batting spot, in a regular position, and that he is not yanked around to death. The Brewers belief in him to give him contract of 2 mil plus one month and the total lack of belief in him the next is one of the craziest things I have seen in baseball….and it should go as a warning to the rest of players in that you could hit unbelievably well in the minors during the year, have underperforming players at positions above you at next level you could still have zero hope of promotion, regardless of team paying you MLB contract to seemingly play MLB baseball.

I see Burnes trade as a continued judgment on Burnes, himself. I think Arnold legitimately sees the return and eventual team by Opening Day as better THIS season. Not that the rotation is better now, of course, but He must think he can add to the staff someone similar or even better than Burnes…some trade must be up his sleeve or close to done. Has to be or the trade for Hoskins makes less sense. From shading him in arby to doing this trade after getting Hoskins, Arnold must think Burnes is trending downward and should be replaceable THIS season. And he likely thinks Ortiz is a huge upgrade at 2B.

Badgers gave up 40 points in the last 10 minutes of the game! Has that ever been done to a Badger team? Ever? AND in a double digit win?

Although he probably hasn’t been the MVP for any Big Ten game this season, Tyler Wahl is a big reason this team is undefeated in league play. He defends bigs well and even guards on switches. A couple defensive stops of his stick out today. He was the one dribbling the ball down court with a minute left, up 4. He is hitting his FTs much better lately and he is finishing better at the hope….both big improvements from last year. And he is a post presence. Selfless. He is even better than he was two years ago. And he can be better rested on top of it all with more depth off the bench. Huge presence.

The competition for Essegian will continue to limit his minutes. It’s more the other good players (Chuck, Blackwell, Klesmit, Storr) that is limiting him than poor play. Connor is likely gone next year to simply play and play big minutes at another top 50 school. He is risking it to stay.

It really didn't matter that Hiura hit over .900 OPS....he could have hit over 1.000 OPS and it wouldn't have mattered. We're going with Winker. Winker is the one we are staying with. And bat him #2 for half the season. I digress, but my logic is that if the Brewers think this high of him now, they MUST have thought he could have at least helped them somewhat late last season! The bar to take a few bats off the bench or even batting DH was super low. And with the team being super high on Chourio, why not? And we so needed a few big at bats, Sveum. Look at those playoff games. A big at bat here or there....how about letting Chourio bat in Turang's spot with bases loaded in Game 1? If Brewers brass believes in him so much now, they had to have had belief in him a couple months ago to hit better than the awfulness we saw. I just assumed they wanted to see more of him in the minors... or that they weren't comfortable with him yet as a hitter (ala Hiura). If they like Chourio enough to give him that contract, they should have had him up in Sept./Oct.

Take a breath. I'm not trying to be difficult. I'm just saying we could have had better players up in Sept. and October. And these (Chourio, Black, Hiura, and Miz, if not injured) were the ones I was thinking. And the Brewers obviously value Chourio MORE THAN ANYONE. He could have been brought up in September and October, yes. And yes, he could have hit DH. He was an on fire hitter the second half. And if Super Two or long term deal price was the only thing keeping him down, I absolutely hate that reasoning. As Mr. Miyagi once said in Kirate Kid II, "Small price..." for winning in the playoffs. And he, Chourio not Miyagi, could have started the year in AAA if worried about MLB playing clock. Overall, I really do not like what we are doing with our bench over the last two seasons. It is a dumpster fire. And the DH position strategy is the big dumpster fire next to the bench one. I want the best bats playing and coming in off the bench. And no, showing our regular season record does not help the postseason record. And we didn't win a postseason game in October, and we didn't score much either. We were a couple of big hits away from winning each game, though. Sure would have been nice to have a big bat or really any bat coming off our bench last year.

So a really good and soon to be great player, but still not good enough to be better than Winker in late season 2023. Or Chourio could have helped us, but we are too cheap to risk Super 2.?Also, doesn’t his service time clock stop if he starts the year in AAA, correct? Trying to defend Brewers late season moves is walking thin ice on a warm winter day. We desperately needed hitting, sparks off the bench…and another right handed bat with pop! And most on this board would have dumped Winker in June or July. So the Brewers are paying this guy like he will be starting CF and 3rd hitter. So be it. Yet, they were not willing to bring up same guy last year, even for a month or two in playoff hunt and/or postseason, to help the team in a minor role among a merry go round of low bar hitting role players

Well, he signed in early December and we were still playing in early October….so less than two months. In general, Chourio’s really, really good to give him over $100 million but not really THAT good yet to outplay Winker (who also was living in the minors at season’s end) off the bench. Madness.

This is your mind inside of Arnold’s, I gather. Just a bunch of guesses, unless you have seen comments from Arnold on this topic. Please share if you have and apologies if it is out there. Personally, I don’t know how a month or two would have major service time ramifications. He could have still started 2024 in the minors. Money wise, if he did well in September/October, there would be major ramifications to the deal he just signed. Yet, the Brewers would have GLADLY paid the extra for another bat late in the season.

The Brewers think this high about the guy and they leave him off the playoff roster for Winker. That is how I first look at this deal. He’s this good and he didn’t play last year. Or could it be Arnold wanted him up and CC wasn’t going to play him. I just don’t understand it all but going not good enough for MLB to starting CF batting third is a big leap in a couple months

Will be interesting to see where Black starts season (AAA/MLB) and especially where he plays in the field. I feel he, more than anyone in the organization, is a mystery. If defense isn’t a concern, he coulda/shoulda just stick at 3B… wide open avenue to majors there. However, if he cannot play defense well somewhere, it seemingly doesn’t matter how good he hits.

Oh, I agree. I think Burnes was not in the right… not one bit. But I don’t think the Brewers are asking the moon for him; they’ll take a couple young pitching stars though and that should be possible. And they have been thru enough bad press of late with CC and state $ deal to not want to bring more upon themselves. And the team cannot be all about 2024…just cannot believe it.

I think the Brewers want nothing to do with Burnes and arbitration. It was an embarrassment last year and it will be negativity this year too. He’s gone. It’s all positioning now, just seeing what others are willing to give up to get him. Playing hard to get knowing several big market teams like Dodgers and Yankees and others….just one…will eventually cave to Brewers demands at add ins and throw ins. My guess is that several close or in general deals are in place with several teams and that one player needs to be added to get it done. They can play around for a month to drive up price by waiting out a few other SP to sign or get traded. Long term, we need several young high end pitchers to go along with budding young offense. A Burnes trade could bring us to part of that goal like no other trade could. I simply cannot believe we think that highly of 2024 to go big money on Burnes for one year, face the arbitration negativity game with him again, and deal with the potential trade rumors with him at deadline. I think we want none of that and would be happy with multiple, favorite, young, and especially cheap arms going forward.

So if Chourio is just awful in April and May, we are stuck with him in MLB? More probable than possible with a 20 year old, considering he struggled the first half of the season last year in the ultra easy AAA where anyone can hit well. Are there any minor leagues options for him anymore with this contract? I figure not.
