Big inning lifts Rattlers to victoryChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored in just one inning on Saturday night against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Time Warner Cable Field. But, it was more than enough. Wisconsin scored seven runs in the fourth inning to defeat the Kernels 7-2 in front of a season high crowd of 6,407. Cedar Rapids (57-74 overall, 25-36 second half) grabbed the lead with a run in the top of the third. They loaded the bases with no outs against Rattlers starting pitcher Del Howell on a walk and two singles. Howell uncorked a wild pitch to let in the first run of the game, but did not allow another run in the frame. The Timber Rattlers offense, which scored 19 runs on Friday night, went off in the bottom of the fourth. Cody Hawn started the inning with a double. He went to third on a grounder to the right side off the bat of Nick Ramirez. Chad Stang sent a grounder to third that Brian Hernandez made a nice play just to glove. But, Hernandez went home with the throw. Hawn scored the tying run when the low throw was not handled by catcher Marcus Nidiffer. Rafael Neda was next and he singled to put two runners on base. Greg Hopkins followed with a double to score Stang with the go ahead run. Reggie Keen kept the hit parade going with an RBI single when he pinch-hit for Carlos Gomez. One out later TJ Mittelstaedt drew a walk to load the bases. That walked knocked Kernels starting pitcher RJ Jang out of the game. Jason Rogers greeted Kernels reliever Ty Kelly with a towering double off the top of the wall in left field. The double scored all three runners to give the Rattlers (65-66, 27-34) a 6-1 lead. Hawn capped the inning with an RBI double for the 7-1 advantage. Howell allowed one more run in his six innings of work and left the game with a 7-2 lead. Howell matched his professional high for strikeouts in a game with six and picked up his third win of the season. Rattlers reliever Greg Holle took over for Howell in the top of the seventh. The tall right-hander pitched three perfect innings with four strikeouts to close out the Kernels for his nineteenth save of the season. Holle has tied a Timber Rattlers franchise record for saves in a season. John Thompson set the mark with 19 saves in the 1995 season. Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez went 0-for-1 with a walk, a stolen base, and three putouts center as he played the first game of his four game rehabilitation assignment with the Rattlers on Saturday. Game two of the series – and of the rehab assignment for Gomez – is on a jam packed Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. Jimmy Nelson (7-8, 4.52) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Cedar Rapids has Jairo Diaz (0-1, 5.56) as their scheduled starter. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm. Fans may play catch on the field before the game from 12:00 until 12:30pm and get autographs from their favorite players during a postgame autograph session. Former Milwaukee Brewers catcher Damian Miller will be on hand to throw out a ceremonial first pitch. Miller will be available for autographs on the third base picnic deck for an hour after the start of the game. Myron Noodleman makes his return to Time Warner Cable Field and will entertain the fans with his skits and antics. Sunday is also the final Brewers Sunday of the season. The Timber Rattlers players and coaches will wear the jerseys based on the uniforms of the 1975 Milwaukee Brewers for the final time. After the game there will be a live auction for fans to bid on the jersey they want to take home. Proceeds from the auction will go to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. If you can’t make it out to the game, you can tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:45pm. Sunday’s game is also available on MiLB.TV. -

Final: @Wisconsin 7, Cedar Rapids 2 Rattlers use big inning to top Kernels 7-2By Morgan Hawk / Cedar Rapids Kernels APPLETON, Wisconsin - The Timber Rattlers scored seven runs in the fourth inning to cruise past the Kernels 7-2 on Saturday evening. The Kernels took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Jean Almanzar scored from third base on a wild pitch by Wisconsin starter Del Howell. Wisconsin sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the fourth inning, taking a commanding six run lead. Cody Hawn scored on a RBI fielder's choice groundout by Chad Stang, tying the game 1-1. Greg Hopkins doubled to left to score Stang, giving the Timber Rattlers a 2-1 advantage. Reggie Keen's single scored Rafael Neda, pushing Wisconsin's lead to 3-1. Jason Rogers' double off the wall in left brought home Hopkins, Keen and T.J. Mittelstaedt, clearing the bases and extending the Timber Rattlers' lead to 6-1. Rogers then scored on Hawn's double, making the score 7-1. P.J. Jang (2-6) started and took the loss for the Kernels and went 3.2 innings. He allowed six runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking two. Ty Kelley went 2.1 innings in relief. He allowed one run on five hits while striking out one and walking none. Erik Gregersen went two innings in relief, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out four and walking none. The Kernels put a run across in the sixth inning, cutting Wisconsin's lead to 7-2. Brandon Decker walked and came home on Marcus Nidiffer's double to deep left center. Howell (3-8) went six innings for the Timber Rattlers. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out six and walking three. Greg Holle pitched the final three innings for his 19th save of the season. The Kernels continue the series at Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Wisconsin box scoreSolid outing from Howell, and Holle fanned four in three perfect innings. Mittelstaedt was on three times with two hits, including a double, and a walk. Hawn doubled twice. Rogers, Stang, Neda, and Hopkins all had two hits as well. Carlos Gomez was 0-1 with a walk and a stolen base in his first of four rehab starts. Wisconsin play-by-play -

Final: @Jackson 6, Huntsville 1 Huntsville box scoreMore of the same for the Stars. With Cody Scarpetta and Kyle Heckathorn on the shelf, they're really struggling, from my perspective, to be interesting at all. Santo Manzanillo did do his part, working a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. Anderson de la Rosa had two of Huntsville's five hits, including a double. Brock Kjeldgaard and Zelous Wheeler each singled and walked. Khris Davis was 0-4. Huntsville play-by-play -

Final: Brevard County 6, @Tampa 5 Brevard County box score The Sea Cows rapped out 15 hits and survived despite giving up three runs in the bottom of the 9th. Four of those hits came courtesy of Shea Vucinich, and every starter had at least one except the team batting average leader, Scooter Gennett. Baseball is a funny game. Shawn Zarraga had three, including a double, and Kentrail Davis had two, also including a double. Hiram Burgos pitched well, allowing two runs in six innings, and Eric Marzec worked a scoreless frame before Bradley Blanks allowed the three late runs.Brevard County play-by-play Tampa Bottom of the 9thKyle Roller walks.Rob Segedin singles on a fly ball to right fielder Kentrail Davis. Final: @Nashville 7, Memphis 1 Fiers Dominates As Sounds Beat Division-Rival Memphis, 7-1Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory over the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds on Friday night in front of 8,544 fans at Greer Stadium. Nashville starting pitcher Mike Fiers (6-0) continued his dominance from the mound, allowing just one run on three hits and no walks in seven innings of work. Including strikeouts to five of the first nine batters faced in the game, Fiers became the second Sounds pitcher to strike out a season-high 10 batters this season, matching a mark previously set by Frankie De La Cruz on July 23 vs. Iowa. Fiers is now posting a 1.42 ERA (8er/48.2ip) with 52 strikeouts in his 48 2/3 innings as a starter for Nashville. Third baseman Taylor Green and right fielder Caleb Gindl both enjoyed good evenings for the Sounds in the win. Green went 2-for-4 with a homer, double, and three RBIs. Gindl also added two hits with a homer and three RBIs. Gindl got the evening started by belting a solo homer of Memphis starter Brian Broderick in the bottom of the second inning for a 1-0 Sounds lead. The homer was Gindl's 15th of the season. Nashville plated three more runs for a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the sixth inning. After left fielder Jordan Brown singled up the middle, Green lined an RBI double down the right field line. The double was Green's team-leading 37th of the season, which moved him into a tie for fourth place with Drew Denson (1993) and Brad Nelson (2008) on the Sounds single-season list. Later in the inning after an intentional walk to first baseman Mat Gamel, Gindl crushed a two-run single to center field for the next two runs [audio]. After Redbirds left fielder Shane Robinson led off the game with a double, Fiers retired the next 20 consecutive Memphis batters, a new season-high by a Sounds pitcher this season. Memphis right fielder Nick Stavinoha then crushed his 28th homer in the seventh inning to give the Redbirds their only run. The Sounds tacked on three more runs in the next frame for a 7-1 advantage. Center fielder Logan Schafer singled and scored the first run on the ensuing double from Brown down right field line. Green then jacked a two-run bomb down the right field line onto Chestnut Street. The long ball was his 22nd homer of the season. Danny Ray Herrera ended the game with two scoreless innings in relief. Broderick (7-6) gave up four earned runs on eight hits in six inning pitched. The Sounds and Redbirds continue with the fourth game of a five-game series on 6:35 pm CT on Saturday night at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Wily Peralta (2-0, 1.80) takes the mound for Nashville against Memphis lefty Nick Additon (3-8, 5.00). Nashville box scoreJust for fun, Fiers also posted an 8/2 GO/FO. 93 pitches, 65 strikes for the non-prospect. Great game.Nashville play-by-play

Final: Brevard County 8, @Tampa 7 Brevard County box scoreNick Bucci fanned six and walked just one in 4.1 innings--great, right? Well, no; as you've guessed from the innings total, Bucci was knocked around a bit, allowing six runs on ten hits. On the bright side, four Sea Cows had multi-hit efforts, including Hunter Morris with three, including a double, and Kentrail Davis with two, including a triple. Scooter Gennett was 1-4 with a walk. D'Vontrey Richardson did not play.Brevard County play-by-play Plenty of line drives given up by Bucci, so it wasn't all bad luck.

Final: @Jackson 10, Huntsville 2 Huntsville box scoreAnother dreary Stars box score. Chase Wright was wrong to the tune of ten runs allowed in 6.1 innings. It's okay though--only eight were earned. Darren Byrd did have a nice outing, retiring all five batters he faced, three via strikeout. Remember when he was going to be the next Brandon Kintzler? Remember when Brandon Kintzler was going to be the first Brandon Kintzler? After two days off, Khris Davis returned to the lineup and was the lone bright spot, notching three hits in four trips. Sean Halton did walk twice, which is unusual. Huntsville play-by-play

Final: @AZL Brewers 4, AZL Mariners 3 AZL Brewers box scoreNice games from Michael White and Danny Keller. White went five shutout frames, albeit with less-than-sterling peripherals (2/3 K/BB), and Keller followed with two scoreless, hitless innings. Hitaniel Arias had a nice day at the plate, collecting a single, double, and walk. Andres Martinez also had two hits, and Michael Reed and Jimmie Pharr both doubled. Also tallying a double was the Mariners' DH, some guy named Salome. Final: @Wisconsin 5, Kane County 2 Wisconsin box scorePretty good work from Matt Miller: 7 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 9/4 GO/FO--and yes, 1 HBP. I think the Brewers should present Miller with an honorary apron at the end of the year, due to his evident fondness for getting in guys' kitchens. Casey Medlen struck out three and walked none in two innings of relief, giving him a 24/4 K/BB in 22 Wisconsin innings; weirdly, he had a 9/6 K/BB in 7.2 innings in Arizona. Hey, Nick Ramirez drew a walk! He's actually walking at a much better rate since being promoted, but of course, given that he's not doing anything else, it could just be passivity. Ramirez also had a hit, and Jason Rogers had two. Wisconsin play-by-playChris's recap should be posted shortly.

Final: Birmingham 4, @Huntsville 2 Huntsville box score Jesus Sanchez allowed four runs in six innings and the Stars lost, but Robert Hinton and Rob Wooten combined to toss three scoreless frames, so there's that. Final: @Clearwater 2, Brevard County 0 Rodriguez's solid outing wins Brevard seriesBy Caitlynn Timberlake / Clearwater Threshers CLEARWATER, Fla. - Julio Rodriguez defended his title of FSL player of the week with a strong outing on Thursday night at Bright House Field. The Clearwater Threshers (69-58) clenched the win as well as the series against the Brevard County Manatees (53-74) with a final score of 2-0. The Manatees bats fell silent against Clearwater as Rodriguez did not give up a single run during the game. The Threshers scored their first run in the third when a single to left off the bat of Jiwan James plated Cesar Hernandez. Clearwater's second run would come in the eighth when an out dealt to Troy Hanzawa would give Hernandez his second run of the night. Despite the loss for Brevard, starter Tyler Thornburg had a strong night striking out ten at bats. This would be his fifth loss of the season and now has an ERA of 3.57. Rodriguez was credited with his team-high 16th win on the season and struck out seven batters during seven innings of work. His ERA now sits at 2.84. Jordan Whatcott was able to hold the Manatees in one inning of work and was credited with the save. Brevard County box scoreKind of a grim first three games of the day, offensively. Obviously Thornburg was phenomenal and now has a 27/4 K/BB in his last three games, covering 20 innings. It's also a great sign that, having struggled with pitch economy at times this year, Thornburg has gone seven innings in consecutive starts. Other than that, not much to say. Scooter Gennett, Hunter Morris, and Juan Sanchez each picked up one of the Sea Cows' three hits; a walk drawn by D'Vontrey Richardson was their only other baserunner. Brevard County play-by-playThe only run Thornburg allowed; Clearwater Bottom of the 3rdCesar Hernandez singles on a ground ball to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson. With D'Arby Myers batting, Cesar Hernandez steals (21) 2nd base.D'Arby Myers grounds out, second baseman Scooter Gennett to first baseman Hunter Morris. MH was right, Gian Rizzo was awesome in game one (8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 8/4 GO/FO), but awesome wasn't good enough today. Joel Dicent and Jorge Ortega were hammered in game two, with the Cerveceritos down 10-3 after four innings. In what were hopefully his last games in the DSL, Orlando Arcia went out with a whimper, 0-6 with a walk. Yonki Hernandez was 3-8, but the rest of the team combined for four hits over two games, which obviously isn't going to win you very many. Oh well--it was a great season and a lot of fun to follow. Final: Kane County 4, @Wisconsin 1 Wisconsin box scoreEric Arnett pitched well, allowing just two unearned runs through seven innings before leaving two runners on for Dan Britt in the 8th, who allowed both to score. Final line: 7.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 HBP, 8 K, 12/3 GO/FO. It's something. TJ Mittelstaedt had three hits; the rest of the lineup had four, though one was a Nick Ramirez double. Mittelstaedt also swiped two bags, giving him 24 on the year against seven caught-stealings. Wisconsin play-by-playChris's recap should be up soon; you can follow a link to it from the box score.

Final: @Huntsville 4, Birmingham 0 Huntsville box scoreGoodness from Dan Merklinger: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K, 6/1 GO/FO, 102 pitches, 64 strikes. He could be an interesting choice for someone in next year's Rule 5 draft. Sergio Miranda and Dayton Buller were both 2-3, Matt Cline was 2-4, and Sean Halton was 2-5. Halton made some noise early in the year but we haven't talked about him much lately, mainly because he hit .258/.353/.393 in July and was hitting .234/.265/.344 in August entering today. The on-base percentage in July, the only good number among those I just listed, is pretty anomalous when you examine his month-by-month walk totals; he drew almost half of his total walks this year in July alone. Khris Davis did not play. Remember Erik Komatsu? .235/.276/.309 for AA Harrisburg since the trade. An 8th-inning homer by Scott Krieger, his seventh, provided the margin of victory, and Scooter Gennett added a double. Josh Prince was on twice with a hit and a walk and stole his 21st bag. Hunter Morris committed his 19th(!) error at first base, to go along with the two he racked up in his brief stint at third. Brevard County play-by-play

Final: Wisconsin 8, @Burlington 4 Rattlers get a series split with Bees on 8-4 winChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers BURLINGTON, IA – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers jumped to a big lead and held off the Burlington Bees 8-4 Tuesday night at Community Field. Jimmy Nelson picked up his seventh win of the season and was backed up by timely hitting that took advantage of shoddy Burlington fielding. The Bees committed six errors in the game. Jason Rogers put the Timber Rattlers (62-65 overall, 24-33 second half) in front in the first inning. His double to center scored Nick Shaw and TJ Mittelstaedt for an early 2-0 lead. Burlington’s defense committed four errors in the top of the second inning and the Rattlers took advantage to score four runs in the frame. Greg Hopkins was hit by a pitch and stole second with one out to start the rally. Reggie Keen sent a grounder to short and reached when the throw to first was high. Hopkins took third on that play. Then, pitcher Nate Long was errant with a pickoff attempt on Keen at first and by the time that play was over Hopkins scored and Keen wound up at third base. Shaw’s RBI single sent Keen home for a 4-0 lead. Mittelstaedt was next and his hit and run single put Shaw at third base. Cody Hawn was next and he sent a grounder to first. The throw to second pulled the shortstop off the base on the force play and the return throw to first was wild as well. Shaw scored and Mittelstaedt went to third with Hawn holding at first. Nick Ramirez capped the scoring in the inning with a double that scored Mittelstaedt for a 6-0 lead. In the sixth inning, Hawn grounded into a 4-6-3 double play with runners at the corners to plate another run for a 7-0 advantage. Nelson cruised through the first five innings. He allowed a hit and walked a batter, but faced the minimum due to a pair of double plays by the Rattlers defense. Burlington (68-59, 23-34) broke through against Nelson in the sixth. Royce Consigli singled to start the inning. Wade Kirkland doubled to put runners on second and third. Tyreace House singled to center to score both runners. Later in the inning, Nino Leyja’s RBI grounder got House home to cut Wisconsin’s lead to 7-3. Nelson gave up a walk and a single to start the bottom of the seventh inning. He got the first out, but the call went to the bullpen for Casey Medlen to protect the lead. Medlen struck out both batters he faced in the seventh to close out the inning and keep the Rattlers up 7-3. Hawn extended the lead with an RBI ground rule double in the top of the eighth. Burlington got a run off Alan Williams in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by Josh Whitaker. In the bottom of the ninth, Williams loaded the bases with three walks and a fielder’s choice. Adrian Rosario came on to get the final out of the game and to record his fifth save of the season. The Timber Rattlers return home to begin a seven game homestand with a game against the Kane County Cougars. Eric Arnett (0-2, 5.91) is the scheduled starter for Wisconsin. Kane County will counter with Jason Adam (5-8, 4.48) as their starter. Final: @Omaha 5, Nashville 2 Nashville Loses 5-2, Splits Series With Division-Leading OmahaNashville Sounds PAPILLION, Neb - The Nashville Sounds closed out their road trip with a 5-2 loss to the division-leading Omaha Storm Chasers on Tuesday evening at Werner Park. With the loss, Nashville (66-65) split the series with Omaha and lost the season series between the clubs by an 11-5 margin. Omaha starting pitcher Sean O'Sullivan (8-2) recorded his best pitching performance of the season for the Storm Chasers. The right-hander tossed seven scoreless frames while striking out eight and walking none for the victory. It was also his sixth quality start in his last seven outings. Nashville designated hitter Erick Almonte and right fielder Caleb Gindl each had two hits in the loss.
