  1. RHP James to Huntsville from NashvilleHuntsville Stars JACKSON, Miss. – The Milwaukee Brewers have made a roster move that will impact their Double-A affiliate Huntsville Stars prior to tonight’s series finale at Mississippi. RHP Justin James has been transferred to Huntsville from Triple-A Nashville. James is 2-2 with a 4.68 ERA in 25 games for the Nashville Sounds. He was placed on the disabled list on July 19, retroactive to July 15. James completed a rehab assignment with the Arizona Brewers, pitching in three games. He gave up five hits in four innings of work. James will join the Stars for tomorrow’s series opener against Birmingham. With these moves, the Stars active roster stays at 24 with four on the DL.
  2. 1B/OF Chris Dennis (on) and C Shawn Zarraga (off) swap spots on the Brevard County DL.
  3. No, the earliest they'll pitch for the Brewers is in the Arizona Fall League.
  4. Final: @Mississippi 3, Huntsville 0 Huntsville box scoreVery blah. Dan Merklinger: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 91 pitches, 52 strikes. Brock Kjeldgaard had two hits, and Lee Haydel singled and walked. Khris Davis did not play. I wish had more to say about this game, but I don't. Huntsville play-by-play
  5. Final: @Peoria 8, Wisconsin 2 Chiefs drop Rattlers in PeoriaChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers PEORIA, IL – The Peoria Chiefs defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8-2 Friday night at O’Brien Field. Peoria collected 13 hits and pulled away to beat the Rattlers for the second night in a row. The Chiefs (55-68 overall, 22-31 second half) took the lead in the first inning. A two-out RBI single by Richard Jones plated Rubi Silva and Peoria was up 1-0. A mishandled double play ball allowed the Chiefs to put runners on first and third with no outs in the second inning. Jesus Morelli got the run home from third with a ground out. Jones struck again to set up a run in the bottom of the third. He doubled to the wall in right with Anthony Giansanti at first to put runners on second and third with one out. Dustin Geiger, who knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on Thursday night, got Giansanti home with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. Eric Arnett threw a scoreless fourth inning, but the Chiefs got to him for two more runs in the fifth. Jones and Rafael Valdes each delivered an RBI single for a 5-0 lead. Peoria poured it on against reliever Seth Lintz in the sixth. Arismendy Alcantara tripled off the wall in right field to drive in a run. Silva was next and he singled off Lintz to score Alcantara. Later in the inning, Geiger singled in Silva for an 8-0 lead. Wisconsin (60-63, 22-31) had many chances early in the game. Twice – the fourth and sixth innings – the Rattlers got a leadoff double. But, each time that runner was still at second when the inning ended. Frank Del Valle tossed 5-1/3 scoreless innings and struck out seven to put himself in position for the win. The Rattlers got on the board in the eighth inning. They had runners at first and second with one out. Cody Hawn sent a grounder to short. The Chiefs got the force play at second, but the throw to first was wild. That allowed Reggie Keen, the runner at second when the play started, to score. Jason Rogers, who had doubled in the fourth, singled in Hawn to account for the Rattlers second run. That hit by Rogers was the only one by a Rattler player with a runner in scoring position. Wisconsin ended the night 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Wisconsin’s road trip continues on Saturday when they open a four game series at Community Field in Burlington, Iowa against the Burlington Bees. Matt Miller (5-6, 4.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. The Bees are sending Jose Macias (5-3, 4.45) to the mound. Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm. Wisconsin box scorePretty sorry line for Arnett: 4.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 2 HBP, 2 K. How much longer do you let him start? STOSH! Wawrzasek finished the game with 2.1 scoreless innings and three strikeouts, so that's nice. Rogers also walked, so he was on three times. TJ Mittlestaedt doubled and walked as well. Brandon Macias stayed hot with two hits. Wisconsin play-by-play
  6. Final: Tampa 5, @Brevard County 3 'Tees drop series opener to YanksBy Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. -- Despite nine strikeouts by starting pitcher Tyler Thornburg, the Brevard County Manatees fell 5-3 to the Tampa Yankees at Space Coast Stadium on Friday night, in front of 2,559 fans. With the Manatees (52-70 overall, 25-27 second half) up 3-1 in the top of the seventh with two outs, Thornburg gave up a three-run homer to Mitch Abeita on a 1-1 pitch, which turned out to be the difference in the game. The only other run that Thornburg gave up was an unearned run in the first inning. He scattered five hits and walked just one in his seven innings of work, which was his longest start of the season with the Manatees. A three-run first inning for the 'Tees gave Thornburg an early cushion as D'Vontrey Richardson singled home Shea Vucinich with one out and then Hunter Morris hit a two-run homer to make it a 3-0 game. It was the 17th homer of the season for Morris, who needs just one homer to tie the single-season Manatees record which is shared by Jose Santos (2001) and Brock Kjeldgaard (2011). The Manatees managed to get just one more runner past first base the rest of the way, as Brevard County struck out 10 times on the night. All seven Brevard County hits came from the first four men in the order as Scooter Gennett went 1-for-4, while Vucinich, Richardson and Morris were all 2-for-4. The Yankees (65-57, 28-25) scored an insurance run in the eighth off of Eric Marzac, who pitched the final two frames for the 'Tees. Brevard County and Tampa will continue its three-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Nick Bucci (8-11, 3.76) will take the hill for the Manatees, while the Yankees will counter with Brett Marshall (9-7, 3.88). http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/images/2011/08/19/qKjcHBbR.jpg Manatees starting pitcher Tyler Thornburg struck out nine in seven inning of work, but it was in a losing effort as Brevard County fell 5-3 to the Tampa Yankees at Space Coast Stadium on Friday night. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Brevard County box scoreEven with the homer, still a nice outing from Thornburg with a 9/1 K/BB. Funny that the franchise home-run mark might be (at least) tied twice in one year. Vucinich, Richardson, and Morris all had two hits. Former Brewer farmhand Josh Romanski was the opposing starter; he allowed the three runs in six innings with a sterling 8/0 K/BB. He's pitched some at AA Trenton this year--wonder why he's back in the FSL. Brevard County play-by-play

Final (game one): DSL Brewers 10, @DSL Athletics 8 (7 innings) Final (game two): DSL Brewers 5, @DSL Athletics 2 (7 innings) DSL Brewers box score (game one)DSL Brewers box score (game two)Hey, today is fun so far (non-Mark Rogers division). In game one, the Cerveceritos had a five-run 1st and survived but actually fell behind 8-7 after allowing six runs in the 5th before storming back with three runs in the 6th. Eliezer Montano allowed an impressive seven runs on ten hits in 4.1 innings. In game two, Juan Francisco followed up his no-hitter with...a relief appearance, albeit a good one: 3.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K. Deivi Mejia finished a cumulative 5-7 with a homer and a double, and Raphachel Colatosti had four hits. Orlando Arcia: 1-7, BB. DSL Brewers play-by-play (game one)DSL Brewers play-by-play (game two)The Atleticitos committed nine errors totals, including seven in game one alone; shortstop Hiram Martinez had a glovely day with three miscues in the first game and a cherry-on-top fourth in the second. Trying not to be outdone, the Cerveceritos committed two errors on one play in the first game. Read the PBP if you want your eyes to bleed.
  8. Final: @AZL Brewers 9, AZL Reds 1 AZL Brewers box score Very nice second outing for Jorge Lopez: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K. As with last time, Manuel Ruiz pulled a starter's load, working five shutout innings after Lopez was done; Ruiz only struck out two, but then again, he also only walked one. Things were fun on the offensive side as well, as the Brewers pounded out 16 hits, drew five walks, and were hit by a pitch twice. Michael Reed finished a homer short of the cycle, Jalen Harris collected two doubles and a single, Jose Garcia doubled, singled twice, and was plunked, Rafael Neda was on all five times up, and everyone else had good lines, too--well, except for poor Andres Martinez, who was 0-5. Kevin Berard was at shortstop again and this time did not commit an error. 10. Final: @Daytona 4, Brevard County 3 Brevard County box scoreThe game was delayed in the 4th inning, presumably due to weather, causing Evan Anundsen to depart early, which really wasn't such a bad thing since he'd already allowed eight baserunners. D'Vontrey Richardson and Josh Prince each had two hits, and Shea Vucinich was on three times with a single and two walks. I swear, with the number of good games Vucinich has recorded, I can't believe he's still hitting just .256, though that's up significantly from his mark earlier this summer, as he's been hitting at a .300+ clip since the end of June. Actually, "Bad Santo" would be a pretty good nickname if the "bad" was "good bad" rather than "bad bad". You know what I mean. Hainley Statia doubled down on triples, and Steffan Wilson had three hits, including his fifth homer. Khris Davis watch: 0-4, .215 batting average. 12. Final: @Peoria 5, Wisconsin 4 Peoria gets a run in the ninth to beat WisconsinChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers PEORIA, IL – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers got out to a fast start Thursday night at O’Brien Field. But, the Peoria Chiefs rallied twice to tie the game and eventually beat the Rattlers 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Timber Rattlers (60-62 overall, 22-30 second half) took advantage of wildness on the part of Peoria starting pitcher Luis Liria in the first inning. TJ Mittelstaedt and Nick Shaw drew walks to start the game. Cody Hawn doubled to left to score Mittelstaedt for a 1-0 lead. Greg Hopkins drew a walk to load the bases. Then, Nick Ramirez and Brandon Macias had consecutive RBI ground outs to score the final two runs of the inning.?? Peoria (54-68, 21-31) came back with two runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning. Jesus Morelli beat out an infield single with two outs and runners at the corners to drive in the first run. Ben Klafczynski followed with an RBI single to make the score 3-2. ??The Chiefs tied the game in the fourth. Micha Gibbs doubled to right-center with runners on first and second. The runner from second scored, but Reggie Keen and Macias relayed the ball to the plate in time to get the runner trying to score from first.?? Wisconsin retook the lead in the top of the seventh. Franklin Romero, Jr. reached second on a error with one out. A wild pitch put Romero on third. Mittelstaedt cashed in the run with a line single to right and the Rattlers led 4-3. ?? But, Peoria came back in the bottom of the seventh. A two-out RBI single by Jones scored Anthony Giansanti from second to tie the game 4-4. ?In the bottom of the ninth, Brian Garman walked Arismendy Alcantara to start the inning. Rubi Silva was next and his attempted bunt turned into a drag bunt that wound up in short right for a single that sent Alcantara around to third with the winning run. Wisconsin walked the next batter to load the bases for Jones. ??Wisconsin set up their defense with five infielders as they brought Mittelstaedt in from left field. Jones would send a grounder to Macias at second and the throw home got Alcantara.?? The defense rest to their more traditional position after getting the first out. Then, Dustin Geiger lined a 1-0 pitch from Garman down the line in left to sent Silva home with the winning run. The final game of the series is Friday night at O’Brien Field. Eric Arnett (0-1, 4.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Peoria has Frank Del Valle (2-2, 3.38) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm. Wisconsin box scoreJimmy Nelson's line: 5.2 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 9/1 GO/FO. Seems like Nelson is either featuring his two-seamer a lot more lately or is simply losing his midsummer momentum; of course, the latter could be a consequence of the former. Alan Williams worked 1.2 scoreless frames but was hung with a blown save for allowing an inherited runner to score the tying run in the 7th. Mittelstaedt, Shaw, and Hawn each had a hit and a walk, and both Mittelstaedt (21) and Hawn (3) swiped a bag. Glad to see the Cheetah back in his natural habitat. Wisconsin play-by-play

Jose Garcia, Jalen Harris, and Renaldo Jenkins each picked up triples. Kevin Berard started at short again in the first game and committed another error there; Berard moved to second base in game two, with Jenkins taking over at short and turning in a nice game with two hits and two steals. 14. A prospect, to my mind, is a player who projects to contribute at the big-league level. It is not a binary term; it's a spectrum. Hence, you can have a Mike Fiers or a Martin Maldonado both--for the sake of this argument--be poor bets to contribute even average performance, and yet be likely bets to contribute something. We have a term for this--"poor prospect". Note that it includes the word "prospect". The Brewers have a lot of poor prospects. That's not a reason to look a gift backup catcher in the mouth. Now, a lot of this is semantics. You say "Fiers could absolutely have a future with the Brewers" but don't want to use the word "prospect" to describe him? Fine, whatever. We, and almost everyone else, agree on the contents, regardless of the label.
  15. Final: Wisconsin 7, @Peoria 4 Romero rallies Rattlers past PeoriaChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers PEORIA, IL – Franklin Romero, Jr. finished a double shy of the cycle, but he probably didn’t mind to much. Romero delivered a three-run triple in the sixth inning to put the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in front of the Peoria Chiefs. Wisconsin went on to beat the Chiefs 7-4 for their third consecutive victory. Peoria (53-68 overall, 20-31 second half) got on the board in the second inning. Micah Gibbs cracked a two-run home run to left-center to put the Chiefs up 2-0. Wisconsin (60-61, 22-29) rallied back in the top of the third. Romero singled to start the inning and stole second. TJ Mittelstaedt tried to bunt Romero over twice, but fouled off each attempt. Then, Mittelstaedt lined a single to right to score Romero. Mittelstaedt took second on the throw to the plate. Nick Shaw advanced Mittelstaedt to third on a sacrifice bunt. Cody Hawn, in his first game since July 18, knocked in Mittelstaedt with a grounder to short that tied the game 2-2. Nick Ramirez gave the Rattlers a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning with a towering home run to right field. The homer was the second for the 2011 fourth round pick of the Brewers since joining the Timber Rattlers. But, the lead did not last long. A two-out, two-run homer by Rubi Silva in the bottom of the fourth inning put the Chiefs up 4-3. But, that lead did not last long. Romero lined a leadoff home run in the top of the fifth inning to even the game 4-4. It appeared that the game would head to the bottom of the sixth still tied 4-4. Peoria starting pitcher Starling Peralta retired the first two batters he faced, but walked Chad Stang. Brandon Macias was next and his grounder to short was mishandled for an error to keep the inning alive. Then, Joey Paciorek drew a walk to load the bases. That ended the night for Peralta. Romero greeted Peoria reliever Ramon Garcia back driving his first pitch of the gap in right-center for a three-run triple and a 7-4 Wisconsin lead. Del Howell worked a scoreless sixth and turned the ball over to Greg Holle. The tall right-hander out of TCU pitched three scoreless innings to earn his eighteenth save of the season. Holle is within one save of tying the franchise record of 19, which was set by John Thompson in 1995. Romero finished the night 3-for-4. He grounded out to short in the eighth in his final at bat of the night. He drove in four runs and stole his eighteenth base of the season in the game. Game two of the series is Thursday night at O’Brien Field. Wisconsin has named Jimmy Nelson (6-8, 4.52) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Luis Lira (1-3, 5.24) is scheduled to start for the Chiefs. Game time is 7:00pm. You can tune in for the game on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm. Wisconsin box scoreGreat to see Hawn back and Ramirez go deep; Ramirez also singled. Paciorek's really fallen off at the plate and committed his eighth error. 16. Final (game two): DSL Brewers 3, @DSL Cardinals 0 (7 innings) DSL Brewers box score After today's doubleheader sweep, the Cerveceritos are now 15-5 against the Cardenalitos this year; glad to see cruelty against Redbirds is an organizational policy. Gian T. Rizzo was, as usual, amazing: 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K. We almost had our second seven-inning no-hitter in three days. The Cerveceritos had six hits, and happily Orlando Arcia had two of them, plus his 12th steal. He always seems to do well when his compatriot Rizzo is on the mound. DSL Brewers play-by-play
  17. Final: @Nashville 4, Tucson 0 Peralta Dominates Tucson In Sounds' 4-0 Shutout WinNashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Right-hander Wily Peralta fanned nine batters over seven scoreless innings to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 4-0 victory over the Tucson Padres on Wednesday evening at Greer Stadium. Peralta (2-0), who won his second straight Triple-A start since joining the Sounds, allowed only three hits and did not walk a batter on the night, tossing 61 of his 91 pitches for strikes. Daniel Herrera followed on the hill and closed out the Sounds' fifth shutout victory of the year with two perfect frames, striking out one batter. The three-hit shutout was the eighth win in the last 10 games for Nashville (64-61). Left fielder Jordan Brown spotted the Sounds a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with his sixth home run of the season, a one-out solo shot to right off Tucson starter Jon Leicester. Shortstop Edwin Maysonet doubled the Nashville advantage to 2-0 in the second when he dumped a two-out RBI single into center field to drive in Caleb Gindl, who had drawn an inning-opening walk. Nashville first baseman Erick Almonte upped the lead to 4-0 in the fifth when he belted a two-out, run homer off the neck of the guitar-shaped scoreboard in left-center [audio]. The longball, which came against Leicester and also scored Eric Farris (single), was the infielder's sixth of the year and extended Almonte's season-best hitting streak to seven games. Leicester (5-7) was saddled with the loss after giving up four runs on eight hits over his five frames of work for the Padres. The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. matchup on Thursday. Left-hander Sam Narron (6-5, 5.02) will make the start for the Sounds. Tucson has not announced its starter for the contest. Nashville box scoreFree Wily! He even posted an 8/2 GO/FO. Just dominant. Martin Maldonado was 2-4. Still no Taylor Green, and Mat Gamel didn't play either. Will Inman--who has, unbelievably, still yet to make the major leagues--pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the T-Pads.Nashville play-by-play

You can probably guess which pitcher gave up both Daytona runs. Bradley Blanks struck out four of the five men he faced for the 1.1-inning save. Scooter Gennett and Hunter Morris each had two hits, with one of Gennett's being a double, and D'Vontrey Richardson had a hit and a walk and committed no obvious baserunning errors. Josh Prince went deep for the fourth time. Maybe if I mock him some more his homers will go up by a factor of four again next year. Brevard County play-by-playI think it's more likely that Prince and Scott Krieger batted out of order here but went unnoticed: Brevard County Bottom of the 2ndKentrail Davis flies out to left fielder Evan Crawford.Chuck Caufield flies out to center fielder Matthew Szczur.Scott Krieger singles on a line drive to right fielder Michael Burgess.Josh Prince homers (4) on a fly ball to left center field. Joel Prince turned in the longest outing of his career, and though he gave up some hits, it was a successful one: 5 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. Rounding out the roster of under-the-radar yet promising pitchers, Chad Thompson and Michael Schaub each tossed two scoreless frames. One of their batting counterparts, Kevin Berard, got his batting average back over .300 with a 3-4 game; upping the interest level, he got another start at shortstop, though he committed an error. 22. BC doubles up Daytona, 6-3By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. -- The Brevard County Manatees won just their fourth game in 14 tries against the Daytona Cubs on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium, by the score of 6-3. Hiram Burgos allowed three runs over six innings and struck out five, to earn his fourth win of the season. Brevard County had five players get two or more hits, with Scott Krieger leading the way by going 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Brevard County (51-68 overall, 24-25 second half) got on the board first in the second inning as Chuck Caufield and Krieger reached on back-to-back two-out singles and then Josh Prince walked to load the bases. Mike Roberts then reached on an error by Daytona shortstop Elliot Soto, that plated two runs for the 'Tees. Daytona (71-48, 24-25) got one of those runs back in the top of the fourth on a two-out single by Michael Burgess off of Burgos, that plated Justin Bour. The 'Tees made it a 4-1 game in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to a RBI double from Krieger and a RBI bunt single by Roberts. Burgos allowed a run in both the fifth and sixth as Daytona cut Brevard County's lead to 4-3. Mitch Conner, a 36th round draft pick in this June's draft, made his Brevard County debut in relief of Burgos and threw two shutout innings. Kentrail Davis put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run homer that made it 6-3 in favor of the Manatees. Roque Mercedes shut the door in the ninth inning, to earn his fifth save of the season. Brevard County and Daytona will continue their series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Manatees will send Austin Ross (2-3, 7.66) to the mound, while the Cubs will counter with Matt Loosen (1-1, 4.58). http://brevardcounty.manatees.milb.com/images/2011/08/16/lrKgpdGq.jpg Manatees shortstop Josh Prince goes to tag Cubs third baseman Matthew Cerda in Brevard County's 6-3 win over Daytona on Tuesday night. 23. Final: @Brevard County 6, Daytona 3 Brevard County box score Quality start from Hiram Burgos, plus two scoreless innings from Mitch Conner in his FSL debut; congrats, Mitch. Almost every Sea Cow starter had a hit, but it was a very strange distribution: Scooter Gennett was the only 'Tee without, and each of and only the 5-9 hitters had multiple hits, including three from Scott Krieger and Kentrail Davis's eighth homer. Because they live to annoy me, Davis was picked off and D'Vontrey Richardson was caught stealing for the 13th time. 13! He only has nine steals!Brevard County play-by-play Oh fun, same inning: Brevard County Bottom of the 5thShea Vucinich grounds out, shortstop Elliot Soto to first baseman Jake Opitz.D' Vontrey Richardson singles on a line drive to left fielder Evan Crawford. With Hunter Morris batting, D' Vontrey Richardson caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Michael Brenly to shortstop Elliot Soto.Hunter Morris singles on a ground ball to right fielder Michael Burgess.Kentrail Davis singles on a line drive to left fielder Evan Crawford. 24. Surgery likely for Rogers Brew Beat Former Brewers first-round Draft pick Mark Rogers returned to the disabled list on Tuesday and will likely need surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome in his right wrist. Rogers, who had been pitching at Class A Brevard County, is scheduled to visit Dr. Don Sheridan, the Brewers’ hand specialist, in Phoenix on Friday. Sheridan will make the final determination about surgery, but Rogers and the Brewers have known all along that a procedure would be required to release the symptoms that have bothered Rogers since May. Rogers was hoping to delay surgery until after the season, but was shut down again after allowing five earned runs on six hits and three walks in three innings on Saturday. Rogers, 25, was the fifth overall pick in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft but has been dogged by arm injuries during his career. He appeared to get back on track in 2010, when Rogers rose all the way to the Majors, and he entered 2011 as the Brewers’ consensus top pitching prospect. A minor Spring Training shoulder setback cost Rogers a chance to make the Opening Day roster, and the wrist issue has further marred another lost season. Rogers, who will turn 26 in January, is expected to be back to 100 percent well before the start of Spring Training.
