  5. Final: Huntsville 1, @Jackson 0 Huntsville box score Jesus Sanchez (six innings), Robert Hinton (two innings), and Santo Manzanillo (one inning) each had two things in common: they all allowed no runs and they all struck out three batters. Obviously the latter total is a little more impressive for Manzanillo than Sanchez, though Santo made it interesting by loading the bases in the process. Five of the Stars' seven hits were collected by Lee Haydel (three) and Sergio Miranda (two). Brock Kjeldgaard was on three times with a hit, a walk, and a HBP. Khris Davis was 0-4. Making it even sweeter is the performance of Juan Francicso in game two: the 20-year-old RHP threw an abbreviated no-hitter, though in a very DSL line he walked six and and allowed an unearned run. Leonard Lorenzo was almost as good in the first game, with six three-hit, one-run innings and six strikeouts; he matched Francisco in the wildness department by walking four and hitting two. The Cerveceritos totaled only eight hits themselves, with only Jose Pena really having a standout day, 2-4 with his third homer, plus a walk. Orlando Arcia and Sthervin Matos both went hitless. 9. Rodon will not sign with BrewersJ. Mike Blake/News Observer The North Carolina high school baseball player of the year will be matriculating to N.C. State after all. Carlos Rodon, a lefthanded pitcher who led Holly Springs to the state 4-A championship this season, will not sign with the Milwaukee Brewers, according to his mother Julie Rodon. Carlos was drafted by the Brewers in the 16th round (491st overall) of the Major League Baseball Draft in June. "He told us Saturday that he did not even want to pursue anything else (but college). He was done," Julie Rodon said. "He waited a long time and then he just decided that school was the better route, so that's what he decided on." By not signing with Milwaukee, Carlos Rodon will play the next three seasons at N.C. State. Rodon committed to play for the Wolfpack as a rising junior and signed his letter-of-intent last fall. Julie Rodon said that the Brewers did come close signing Carlos, but that Carlos has already moved into his apartment and is ready to begin school at NCSU. "He was honored that he was selected in the draft," Julie said, "but orientation started today and school starts on Wednesday. He can't sit around too much longer."Originally, Rodon was projected by most outlets as being a top-five-round selection, but fell hundreds of picks later was what baseball pundits call "signability." The Rodons stated that it would take an amount closer to what is offered supplemental round draft picks (i.e. $750,000 signing bonuses) to steer Carlos away from his college plans. On draft day, the Brewers actually called Rodon in the fourth round to ask if he would sign for around $250,000. Rodon struck out 135 batters in his senior season, the most in the Triangle, and posted a 1.40 ERA. Over his past three seasons, he went 23-2 as a starter. During a complete-game two-hit shutout in the first game of the 4-A championship series, his fastball was clocked at 93 mph in the first inning and only trailed off to 90 mph by the seventh.

  11. Kirk Bohls of the Austin American Statesman: "All-American Taylor Jungmann, the national Pitcher of the Year, isn't close in his negotiations with the Brewers, who took him with the 12th pick overall, but he will sign before the 11 p.m. deadline today. He's been offered $1.5 million but wants $2 million, a source said."
  12. Final: @Jackson 3, Huntsville 2 Huntsville box score Dan Merklinger was excellent (7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K), but two unearned runs off Rob Wooten in the 8th turned a win into a loss. Zelous Wheeler was 3-4 with two doubles, and Khris Davis wasn't far behind, 2-4 with a double. Lee Haydel, whose .270 batting average is a testament to how hot he was in the first half, showed signs of life with two singles and a walk; however, he was caught stealing twice. Haydel and D'Vontrey Richardson need to go to remedial base stealing camp over the winter. Kentrail Davis was perfect with two singles and a HBP, and D'Vontrey Richardson tallied a single and a triple (and a caught-stealing, natch). Scooter Gennett was 1-3 to extend his hit streak to seven games. Hunter Morris did not play. Game two was canceled and will not be made up. 15. Final: @Wisconsin 12, Quad Cities 3 Rattlers offense breaks out in 12-3 winChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers rebounded with a vengeance after being shut out on Saturday night. The Rattlers knocked 16 hits and scored 12 runs to defeat the Quad Cities River Bandits 12-3 Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. TJ Mittlestaedt and Nick Ramirez both drove in four runs to pace the offense. Brooks Hall picked up his sixth win of the season by allowing one run over five innings. Mittelstaedt gave the Timber Rattlers (58-61 overall, 20-29, second half) a 1-0 lead in the first inning. He lifted a 3-2 pitch from Quad Cities starter Ryan Copeland over the wall in right field for his tenth home run of the season. Quad Cities (69-49, 29-20) loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second inning against Hall. A sacrifice fly by Chris Edmondson scored the tying run, but Hall got out of the inning without giving up another run. Hall was in trouble a couple more times, but he stranded a pair of runners in the third, worked around a leadoff double in the fourth, and a one out double in the fifth. The Rattlers offense broke out in the bottom of the fifth inning, but needed some two-out hits to break the tie. Franklin Romero started the inning with a single and stole second. Mike Brownstein’s single sent Romero to third. But, with two outs, both runners were still at the corners. Jason Rogers beat out an infield single to score Romero and put the Rattlers in front 2-1. Ramirez was next and he lined a double to the wall in right that scored both runners. Greg Hopkins dropped in a bloop single to score Ramirez for a 5-1 Rattlers advantage against Copeland. Angel De Jesus relieved Copeland for the bottom of the sixth. He hit the first batter and walked the second batter of the inning. But, with two outs, Wisconsin had runners at second and third. Then, the barrage of two-out hits began again. Mittelstaedt singled in two runs. Chad Stang’s infield single put two runners on for Rogers. Rogers lined a double off the wall in left field to drive in Mittelstaedt. Ramirez was next and his single to center sent two more Rattlers across the plate for a 10-1 lead. In the seventh, Brownstein and Mittelstaedt had consecutive RBI singles to put the Rattlers up 12-1. Hall left after five innings. He allowed a run on five hits, walked three, and struck out four. He qualified for the lead with the offensive explosion. Quad Cities scored a pair of runs off reliever Casey Medlen in the top of the eighth. Medlen had worked 2-2/3 scoreless frames before the Bandits got consecutive RBI hits in the eighth. Seth Lintz came out of the Wisconsin bullpen get the final out the eighth and work a 1-2-3 ninth to finish off the River Bandits. The Timber Rattlers and River Bandits conclude their series on Monday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. Game time is 12:05pm. Matt Miller (5-6, 4.53) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Drew Benes (1-0, 4.91) is set to start for the River Bandits. If you can’t make it out to the ballpark, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 11:45am. Monday’s game is also available on MiLB.TV. Wisconsin box scoreMost Wisconsin box scores have been dreary affairs offensively, especially with Cody Hawn and Mike Walker gone, so savor this one. Tony Pechek was the only Rattler without a hit, and he walked three times. Brandon Macias has done well since his promotion, posting two-hit games in three of his last four. Wisconsin play-by-play
  16. Final (game two): AZL Brewers 5, @AZL Mariners 0 AZL Brewers box scoreAfter Jorge Lopez's pro debut, detailed above, Manuel Ruiz came in and pitched beautifully, tossing six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Ruiz walked three and allowed two hits. Kevin Berard had a great day, 3-4 with two doubles and a walk. Renaldo Jenkins added two hits, and Malcolm Dowell collected a triple and a walk, the triple being just his third extra-base hit. Rafael Neda played the whole game and, while hitless, filled the stat sheet in other, more creative ways: he drew two walks, committed a passed ball, picked a runner off first, and was caught stealing home. AZL Brewers play-by-playJenkins must have whiffed on the suicide squeeze: AZL Brewers Top of the 5thRafael Neda reaches on throwing error by pitcher Lars Huijer.Jimmie Pharr singles on a fly ball to left fielder Reginald Lawson. 17. Deadline looming for pro signingsby Chuck Carree/Wilmington Star News Andrew Cain believes the Milwaukee Brewers may make a last-ditch effort to sign him before the Monday midnight deadline. When I spoke to him Sunday, he had just returned recently from a family vacation in Florida. My gut feeling is he will return for his senior year and he told me he is comfortable doing so. After all, he thinks the Seahawks have a chance to have a solid club and I do too. When I asked him what was going in with his negotiations with the Brewers, he replied he wish he knew. “I don’t know if I will hear from them and they’ll make an offer,” he said. “I feel like a depends on a lot of their guys signing before me.” Then he told me he thought the Brewers would make an offer within 24 hours. The team’s top [two] picks are unsigned and if it is clear they won’t sign, then he thinks that means more bonus money for 12th round picks such as him. So I did a little research and Milwaukee’s third-round pick signed for $340,000. The team’s first position player, outfielder Nick Ramirez, a fifth-round selection, signed for $500,000, well above the estimated slotting of $154,000 In other words, slotting for the round often is meaningless. “I am satisfied with whatever happens,” Cain said. “Professional baseball is a great opportunity and that is what I told them the last time we talked, but I am excited about our team here at UNCW and what we can do.” He explained how he is excited to face both the USA and Canadian Junior National teams in games in September during fall practice.. “It will be a great opportunity to match up with some of the top high school players in two countries and some potential first-round picks,” he said. “It will be nice to play somebody else besides ourselves. It will be fun.
