  3. There has to be a rigorous testing regimen for it to work. All players regularly tested, a positive test is an automatic 15-day DL stint and quarantine. Of course even getting that far requires that sports players are not taking tests that could be better used elsewhere...

  5. I'm a couple episodes into Tiger King and starting to get bored. There better be more plot twists. The entire last episode could have been covered in about 10 minutes. That said, you couldn't write these characters.

  7. Yes! Turn all day games into double headers. Start every currently scheduled day game 1 hour earlier, shorten it to 7 innings, then immediately play another 7 inning game right after it. Love it. I think they will need rules to keep extra innings short. Start extra innings with the bases loaded or something exciting like that.

  9. There is a general COVID-19 thread in the off topic forum, let’s stick to the MLB impacts in this one.
  10. A shortened season is a huge opportunity to try something different with little risk. I hope they are not afraid to do something crazy like forgo the regular season altogether and do a big round robin tournament. It would be a real missed opportunity as well as being unfair to do a shortened season and then run the playoffs as usual. But for convenience (and honoring tickets) they might try and retain what is left of the original schedule.
  11. $220/week for daycare sounds like an absolute steal. In Seattle you wouldn’t be able to get anything for double that price. We’re thinking about having a kid and I’ve been quoted at over $2,500/month. But after having a 2nd grader around temporarily during this crisis I’m not sure we could handle our own kid anyway. I usually work from home 3-4 days/week so not much has changed. But I’m getting bored due to the loss of coffee shops and other extracurricular activities such as the gym and trivia night.
  12. I'm out of patience for the leadership on this. It's inexcusable. Why has testing not been figured out yet? We know that the way out of this is more testing, so why are we so far behind everyone else in testing? The social isolation is completely destroying the economy. It can't continue. We need to be testing like crazy and we need a plan for spinning up the economy again. Otherwise more people are going to die from the economic collapse than the virus.
  13. I am on the other side of this. If MLB can salvage 60 games, won't they? That's a third of your revenue... A 60-game season would be incredibly fun. With that small of a sample almost every team would have a chance at the playoffs. And the games would be very high stakes. We don't really know when things might resume until the number of cases peaks, and we don't even know how many cases there are yet since they still are not testing at the levels needed to figure that out. I agree that it will probably be sometime in mid-summer.
  14. There’s no way out of this now. This is on the scale of 9/11. The economic hit is going to be massive and it is going to take years to get out of the hole.
  15. Lots of good points in this article. If they do shutdown today as expected, there will have to be another period of spring training to get pitchers back up to speed again. Might be a while before there are regular season games.
  16. There it is, conference tourney canceled. Guessing the NCAA tournament is likely going to be canceled as well. Or at least delayed until April.
  17. At this point I would be shocked if it is played in Milwaukee.
  18. Did I miss something? Is this the Black Plague or a virus? Overreactions like this just raise the level of panic. March Madness indeed. I'm a 67 year old but with no serious underlying health issues. Almost all of the deaths from this virus have been to elderly (average age 81) people with severe medical conditions. How does this make them safer? More people will die if they don't have access to medical resources, which will happen if the system gets overwhelmed like it is in Italy. Anything that can be done to slow the spread now will make a huge difference.
  19. I read that Seattle is going to play its first two home series at their Spring Training complex so who knows exactly what is going on. It seems likely that games will be played in Peoria. They are refunding tickets for Opening Day. So that's a pretty big deal! We may eventually progress to all 30 teams playing the first couple weeks in AZ/FL.
  20. Things in Seattle were generally normal except most people have been working from home and there are no tourists anywhere. Today's announcement banning large gatherings is a major escalation. It sounds like small gatherings will be restricted as well. Although I already mostly work from home I'm preparing to be really bored for a couple weeks with virtually everything canceled. It's also going to be really hard on small businesses.
  21. We now have our first major cancellation with the Mariners announcing that their opening series will not be played in Seattle. I'm guessing there will be more to come so here is a place to discuss changes to MLB games.
  22. Ugly first quarter...
  23. Coronavirus has been going around Seattle for weeks. I’ve talked to several people who probably had it in February but there hasn’t been any testing yet. Expect to see hundreds of confirmed cases in the next week as widespread testing ramps up. Many of the school closures and work from home directives just went out this evening. Say what you want about whether it is dangerous or not but there’s going to be a huge hit to the economy...at least in the short term.
  24. I would be really surprised if we didn't buy out the rest of his career. What matters is the total dollar value and when it is dispersed.
