  1. I think they will have to pay the players for the extra game. Players are already paid in gift cards/merchandise for bowl games so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to add monetary compensation. Plus the usual arguments against paying players do not apply for a bonus game that would only pad the coffers while generating millions in bonus revenue. Otherwise any player with NFL ambitions would be crazy to participate in potentially 3 extra games. Another option would be to embrace the cupcake games and do away with power-5 non-conference games entirely. Smaller schools benefit considerably from those games so it could be a win-win. As for the low-level bowl games, I would stop playing them at neutral sites and allow the higher-seeded team to host the game. Schools have been losing money due to not filling ticket allotments so we may see this happen if more schools decline bowl entries.
  2. To further emphasize how stupid the system is, Wisconsin should be helped considerably by the B10 moving conference games up to early September in a few years. The entire "strength of schedule" argument this year might have been ignored if Wisconsin had played their games in a different order. I love what UCF is doing and I hope Wisconsin and Notre Dame fight back by canceling their upcoming series or making the series contingent upon an expanded playoff.
  3. I admit to being completely wrong in my earlier comments about the playoff. There simply isn't any way to effectively evaluate the top teams and the rankings are prone to biases about various conferences, losses, etc. Such a waste to see the top-3 Big Ten teams defeat their inferior opponents instead of squaring off against SEC teams. If anything comes out of this, hopefully it's that Iowa gets some respect for being one of the most difficult road venues in the country. Clemson should never have been given a pass for that Syracuse loss while OSU was punished for Iowa. I consider Georgia the national champion regardless of what happens in the final (which I won't be watching). UCF has a strong case as well and hopefully gets some #1 votes.
  4. That might have been the best quarter of Wisconsin football I have ever seen.
  5. I'm thinking about buying some crypto for fun if Bitcoin goes below $10K. Agreed that it is best for play money...extremely dangerous for serious investment although a few have obviously gotten lucky. The most ridiculous thing about the crypto fad is how terrible it is for the environment. Governments are going to need to do something to discourage mining.
  6. While I agree that the Stanton contract was bad financially, the main goal of the new ownership should be growing the team from a "small market" into a large market team which is entirely feasible because of the size of Miami and the potential to be popular internationally. The team is currently only a "small market" because of previous bad ownership and decades worth of unpopular decisions. The new ownership is doing the exact opposite of what they should be doing by firing longtime well-liked Marlins employees and engaging in a fire sale. Giving away international money to Seattle is further evidence that they do not even have a reasonable plan for building for the future. They are not reaching out to the fans in any way or making any effort to suggest that they have a better plan than Loria. They are doing nothing to combat the bashing that is occurring by the media and on social media. Maybe they do have a plan and it's just a failure to communicate...if so they better hurry up and convey it because they are losing the court of public opinion.
  7. It's embarrassing that MLB approved this sale of the Marlins. I understand they wanted to get rid of Loria, but it's even worse when the new group can't afford to run a baseball team. Rumor has it they are looking for more investors, but I'm not sure who would want to invest in that sinking ship.
  8. Sounds like Stanton is headed to the Yankees. Brutal.
  9. Uggh. Terrible news for us in Seattle.
  10. Yeah, Wisconsin needs to cancel (or threaten to cancel) that Lambeau Field game vs. Notre Dame immediately and cite the CFP committee as the reason for doing it. Otherwise there will never be any positive change. It's a complete joke that Alabama is rewarded for playing Mercer.
  11. Nope, cant do that now. Lets go back to an Outback vs Auburn Like so many of Badgers Bowl games. Orange Bowl vs. Miami it is. Should be a fun one, hopefully Wisconsin can bring enough fans down so that it isn't too much of an away game atmosphere.
  12. They are projecting WI to the Fiesta Bowl vs. USC
  13. Ohion State was the better team. Too many mistakes. Not quite at playoff level yet.
  14. Pumped for this one! Wisconsin 30 OSU 20
  15. Fair enough. I would argue that college football is the most popular "minor league" in the country. The bowl system actually works well for the most part in its main purpose--generating TV ratings. This is the case because the teams tend to be evenly-matched and they don't have much competition during those weeknight prime time slots. They serve a better purpose than a 1 vs 16 game.
  16. Football is way more physically demanding than other sports and the chance for an upset is lower. D1 has the added issue of travel schedules, as mentioned previously in this thread. Recent D2 playoff brackets confirm this. The opening round is merely a formality for the top seeds. The NFL wild card games have seen declining TV ratings for the same reasons. Too many blowouts, uninspiring storylines. Once in a while it helps a team that lost games due to injuries, but the CFP is already doing that (Clemson's loss to Syracuse isn't hurting them in the rankings). The way to generate excitement and generate a true champion is to place good teams against other good teams. A big playoff does the opposite--punishes the top teams by forcing them to play additional games against inferior opponents. College football has the best and most interesting regular season of any sport because of the magnitude of importance of regular season games. Wisconsin played 12 elimination games this year. The last thing college football should do is try to become like other less-interesting sports.
  17. If anything that illustrates why a 16-team playoff will never work. Football is not basketball. Clemson would be a lock either way. We already know Miami is severely flawed, how many games will it take to prove it? If Oklahoma wins, they get the opportunity to play TCU for a third time in the round of 16! At least the third time will finally mean something. Can a 3-loss team still be eligible for a national championship? How about a 4-loss team? Can't wait to see the TV ratings for Alabama vs. North Texas...almost as good as having Western Michigan in the Cotton Bowl. Which middling Pac-12 team will get rewarded with an undeserved bid? Finally a matchup with 2 good teams playing each other...and the only thing on the line is seeding. Yawn. I hope this is sarcasm. Having two good teams face each other is what generates good discussion. As well as controversy. Nobody is talking about Clemson/Miami because it's a boring, predictable matchup. A bigger playoff only generates more of these at the expense of the interesting games.
  18. No. The qualifications to be in are: 1. SEC (e.g. Alabama) 2. Strength of schedule (e.g. beating Alabama) 3. Being Alabama
  19. Uggh, please no more expansion. The Big Ten should have stayed at 12.
  20. Paul Chryst didn't coach the 59-0 game so I also don't see how it is relevant at all. Wisconsin should win if they avoid turnovers on offense and avoid giving up big plays on defense.
  21. Best case scenario tonight--Hundley looked great and McCarthy further cemented his firing.
  22. Prediction: 1. Clemson 2. Oklahoma 3. Wisconsin 4. Auburn The above 4 teams have an easy path--win and they're in. Georgia is in if they beat Auburn. Everyone else requires a win + help.
  23. Exactly. There's no reason why they couldn't have a digital seat selection system. One week before the game, have a website where you enter the voucher #s for you and your friends and pick a section and area (e.g. Section O top, middle or bottom). The system then emails digital tickets to everyone in the group. The preference for the seat selection system should be based primarily on the time that the tickets were scanned in previous games. Show up on time = better seat selection for future games.
  24. They are not selling out the regular seats (except for the 1-2 games/year with decent opponents) so I don't see how it would benefit them to shrink the student section. This year's homecoming crowd was the smallest since 1995. There are 5,000+ unsold tickets for some of these games. The half-empty sections in the upper deck aren't as visible from TV but they are there. It's not just Wisconsin--college football attendance has been declining for 6 straight years. The Big Ten and UW athletic department needing to look themselves in the mirror and figure out how to make watching a football game in person a more pleasant experience. The product is currently optimized for making as much money as possible which means playing the games whenever ESPN/Fox ask them to be played. The games are too long and too many of them start at 11 AM. The opponents are mostly a joke, including the conference ones. The tickets are too expensive. You can't buy a beer in the stadium. As far as I know there has been no attempt to rectify this by the UW or even acknowledge there is a problem. The student section policies are the same as they were when I was a student 10 years ago. Maybe this will finally spur some change.
  25. This is the first proposal in this thread that I can get behind. I have yet to see a convincing argument for an 8-team playoff that doesn't result in mediocre teams getting in and/or making it too easy for the top teams to get in. The Pac-12 shouldn't have a representative this year. Neither should any non power-5 team. Other years are different. A flexible system (i.e. having a human committee) accounts for this Auto bids do not. An 8-team auto bid proposal would also greatly diminish the significance of this week's Wisconsin-Michigan game. Wisconsin has already clinched the B10 West, so one could argue that this weekend's game would be almost meaningless under the 8-team format. I don't buy the idea that a larger playoff bracket would do a better job determining a champion. The best way to determine a champion is for the best teams to play each other, not for the best teams to play mediocre teams. 1 vs. 8 matchup does nothing to help determine a champion and only increases the chance that an inferior team will be named champion because of the randomness of an individual game.
