  1. Brewers hit for the team cycle 5 batters into the game. Nice.
  2. The mid-range models disagree about when the cold weather will break up. The April 26-29 period is around the time when the warm southwesterly flow finally takes over.
  3. The 1998 Florida Marlins might have something to say about that...
  4. Prince Fielder last 2 games: 0-11, 9 K.
  5. Absolutely. Wisconsin is #1 in the nation in binge drinking. There are people who do it everywhere, but it is much more rare to see people drinking 7-8+ drinks elsewhere compared with Wisconsin. We're clearly outnumbered in this thread. It's not really that different than obesity or other epidemic health problems. Lots of people live with it and function despite of it, but it certainly isn't good for them!
  6. Another 3.5 hour game on the way. It's an interesting game, but Miller Park ends up half empty at the end because people don't want to stay up that late.
  7. That's what you're basing it on? He's 25 years old. You may be right, but I don't think you have much evidence. There is always a probability that this was a rare occurrence, he made a mistake, etc, etc, but the circumstances suggest otherwise.
  8. There is a very high probability that his drinking is affecting his performance on the field and his family life. So I think it's correct to say that he has a problem. This wasn't a wedding. It was a Monday night. During the season. And he drove home.
  9. Dan Maciejewski ‏@dmaciejewski 51m Rumor has it Gallardo made it through 5 sobriety tests before faltering in the 6th. #Brewers
  10. Yikes. What a moron. His reputation is permanently damaged now. It's not like he can't afford a taxi. Uggh.
  11. That's a good way to put it into perspective.
  12. Yes the stretch in March was quite unusual with 27 of the first 28 days below normal. There have only been 8 days above normal since March 1. Considering that the spring is usually known for sharp ups and downs, it is unexpected to stay cold for that long. Looks like at least 6 inches of snow is a good possibility now for the NW part of the state. Areas farther SE might see minor accumulations.
  13. Wrigley Field is my favorite ballpark (except for Miller Park of course). Looking at the renderings, it seems like they are going to do a great job preserving the charm. Only very minor aesthetic changes, mostly the addition of clubs/restaurants. I doubt they will miss any home games. The only thing I worry about is the new left field scoreboard which was not included in the drawings. It's supposed to be the same size as the Miller Park scoreboard. The Cubs can't be separated from Wrigley Field. It's part of who they are.
  14. I've been watching the maps. There is a potential for several rounds of thunderstorms/heavy rain again this week. The models have hinted at some snow at the back end of the system, but I would say that anything measurable is unlikely at this point, except in northern and western parts of the state. I wouldn't rule it out though. There's nothing especially unusual about this weather. I looked back at there were similar stretches of rainy weather and cold temperatures almost every April. In 2007, Milwaukee got 7 inches of snow on April 11th. In the past 10 years, there were several instances of snow from April 15-25. Last year was a one time thing and a spring like that is unlikely to happen again in our lifetimes.
  15. I wish baseball had the same rules as golf. If the umpires miss a call, I can just pick up the phone and call MLB. The Cardinals will have to forfeit the game or surrender two runs!
  16. The Padres have to play at Dodger Stadium on Monday already. That should be an interesting one to watch.
  17. If you are only allowed 3 challenges per game, it will only cover the egregiously bad calls and not the ones where the catcher frames a pitch on the corner. I don't want every borderline call to be challenged. Only the ones that are especially important to the outcome of the game or are really bad calls.
  18. According to the ESPN poll, 63% favor either no DH at all or keeping the current rules. That being said, I agree that the DH will probably go to both leagues eventually. Especially if offense continues to stagnate.
  19. Judging by the pitch tracker on MLB.tv, the umpires follow the zone very closely. They are also generally accurate with borderline calls. They just occasionally get fooled and make mistakes. It's not that hard to adjust the computer's zone for each hitter. Almost nobody wants every pitch reviewed by a computer (although I would argue that having an "MLB Gameday" type interface on the scoreboard would be really cool). All they need to do is give each team something like 3-5 challenges per game--if there is a challenge, the umpire signals to the press box and someone presses a button to display the result on the scoreboard. The whole process would take 20 seconds. If they only have a few challenges per game, they will only be used for important calls. I have no idea why anyone would be opposed to a system like that, assuming the technology works properly.
  20. Despite calls like that, a large fraction of MLB fans, perhaps the majority, still prefer no change in how balls and strikes are called. In the meantime, both professional tennis and cricket have been using effective review systems for years that work similar to how an MLB ball/strike challenge could be implemented. Maybe something will change after Selig is gone, but most likely the new commissioner will just keep the same policy. You would think the umpires would prefer a system that prevents them from getting harassed over calls like this.
  21. Closer mentality? He was just firing 95 mph heaters down the middle and praying that they wouldn't catch up to them. Good thing the wind was blowing in.
  22. Those are reasonable counter arguments. It's clear that the current situation isn't working, but the injuries made it far, far worse than it would have been otherwise.
