Really they just need to keep within 2-3 games of the division leader. No hot streak necessary. The offense has been shaky the whole year, even when they were winning games it was primarily due to good starting and relief pitching. There were only a few blowouts. It's clear that they aren't going to run away with the division, but nobody else is either. Keep it close going into September and see what happens. As for the playoffs, the NL Central winner is probably going to get stuck with the Phillies again, with the Braves taking the NL West winner. The Brewers took 2/3 in Philadelphia and are one of the few teams that can come close to matching Philly's starting rotation. -
I would love to think that, but history suggests that the Brewers will have to overpay for free agents and the only players available will be in the decline of their careers. Considering the list of potential free agents, they will probably go with Green at 3B and Gamel at 1B. As for SS, it will probably (and should) be a defensive upgrade, Jack Wilson maybe. Spend the cash on bullpen help. I guess the team could potentially be better, but it's hard to project what kind of production you will get out of Green and Gamel for a full MLB season. Braun has gotten worse and is getting an MRI, I wonder if they will put him on the DL and shelve him until after the ASB.

The scary part about going 4 days without Braun is that next year we will have to go 162 games without Prince Fielder. The middle of the lineup suddenly looks very empty without the duo.

Nice job by the crowd getting into the game despite the score. Maybe they can get the offense fired up to make a comeback. (Yes, I doubt it, but I am eternally hopeful)

I think Brian and Bill have about 5 innings worth of blowout content. Matt Vasgersian used about 5 years worth of blowout content as the Brewers announcer.

Oh well, would rather have Lucroy in there. Kottaras is 2 for 3 against Duke for what it's worth.

It's Zach "slump-buster" Duke. I hope Braun is playing tonight. If the Brewers can't beat Duke, then you know they are in real trouble. The lineup should be straightforward tonight: Weeks Gomez Braun Fielder Hart McGehee Yuni Lucroy

I've seen way too many unrealistic suggestions lately. Melvin and Roenicke aren't going anywhere, so why even bother suggesting it? Maybe one of the other coaches could get the axe, but they will have to fall much farther than one game out of 1st for that to happen. They could use another reliable arm in the bullpen. If Roenicke is going to be stubborn and use a designated 8th inning guy, Melvin needs to get him a reliable 8th inning guy. Trading with the Mets might work if they are interested in taking some cash. But there are plenty of other teams out there interested in relief pitchers with more to give up. If we are really "all in" this year, do we trade another decent prospect? I agree that a new shortstop could help, but the improvement would probably be marginal. Yuni's going to play out the year, whether we like it or not. Like others have suggested, 3B is the best position to make improvements. McGehee likely has the next 6 games to make significant strides or he will lose his starting position. I would like to see one new arm in the bullpen and a change to the bench. The areas of concern mostly relate to games when the starter gets pulled early. If the starting pitching is solid, many of these other problems tend to fade into the background, as they did in May-early June. -
This is the best Brewers team out of the 16 years that I have been watching the team. I enjoy watching every game, even when they lose or Roenicke does something stupid. They have plenty of flaws, but it is going to be fun to see whether they can win the division anyway. They're struggling right now, but we all knew June was going to be troublesome. I saw what they accomplished in May and I expect them to return to winning ways. Plus, is there any other team in the NL Central capable of running away with this? Nope. Yeah I'm a little frustrated like everyone else, but I'm not going to let it ruin my enjoyment of baseball and the Brewers.

Roenicke isn't getting fired this season and probably not in 2012 either. I still like our chances in this game with the top of the order coming up. Maybe Braun can pinch hit for Yuni if it gets that far?

Ok seriously, there is a nice medium between running all the time and never running at all. Are we going to stop stealing 2nd base because a perfect throw gets the runner out at least 1/2 of the time?

I agree with Bill that the squeeze probably wasn't on there. McGehee was probably expecting the throw to go to 2nd. Also, can we have robot umps already?

The Pirates closer, Hanrahan, leads the majors in saves with 25. Who would have thought that the Pirates would win enough games for that ever to happen this late in the year?

A Gamel/Betancourt left side of the infield is scary, but if McGehee can't wake up, it might be a necessity. The bottom of the order needs help. Great inning for the Brewers here.

Yay, my 3000th post! Prince should pick the following: 1) Matt Kemp 2) Ryan Howard 3) Jay Bruce I agree that Weeks would be a fun choice, but it isn't really fair to have 2 Brewers in. Berkman is too old, he will get tired in the 2nd round.

I'm glad we are done with the Yankees and Red Sox. The manager doesn't matter, there were no game-changing managerial decisions in this series. Say what you want about the running philosophy, but it's irrelevant in blowouts. No need for late/close-game bullpen management in this series either. If they want to win on the road, they need to change their approach and mentality. Pitches need to stop painting the corners and trust their stuff. Hitters need to be more patient and quit swinging at balls.

Just a great play there to get Gomez. Lots of emotion by the Yankees, you can tell they are enjoying playing the game. In a classy way, of course.

Great pitching by CC. Prince doesn't have a chance if they call the outside corner like that.
