  1. I do not think "pitching around" is a factor in where Fielder should be placed in lineup. We are really only talking about the 1st inning which accounts for less than 25% of Fielder's plate appearances. Some teams may choose to pitch around him in the 1st inning, but many will just go after him because its early in the game. Left handed starters will probably go after him also. So he's only going to be pitched around less than 15% of the time in the 1st inning. If McGehee has another solid year, that number will decrease further. The reasons for batting Fielder 3rd instead of 4th are more convincing. The scenario is avoided where Fielder leads off the 2nd inning, where he will be pitched to but not have any run-producing opportunities and block the running game if he does get on. He gets additional at-bats for batting 3rd instead of 4th. He will hit in the first inning of every game. Braun seems like an ideal #2 hitter--high OBP, high speed, and hits a high % of walks, singles, and doubles compared to home runs. Considering the problems at the bottom of the lineup, it is important that Weeks, Braun, and Fielder get to the plate as much as possible. The trio can get an extra 40 PA or so by hitting 1-2-3 instead of 1-3-4. I also think that Weeks (or Gomez as the #8 or #9) should be running when Braun and Fielder are batting. If the pitcher doesn't have to worry about them stealing, then he can concentrate on getting Braun/Fielder out. It is better for our speed guys to create additional pickoff throws and distract the pitcher, even if they do get caught a few more times.
  2. I still doubt that Gomez has put it all together. 0 walks in 35 at-bats? That is troublesome. I haven't seen him play, but I suspect he still isn't capable of reigning in his aggressiveness to the point of being a complete hitter. Pitchers will adjust to him and he needs to learn to take his walks. I'll go with a modest improvement over last year: .265/.300/.380, 35 stolen bases in 50 attempts. He will probably have a few hot streaks in there but by September his numbers will have fallen off.
  3. Utah State over K-State. Oakland to the Sweet-16. Xavier to the Sweet-16. Ohio State will win it all.
  4. Triple-Double-Double-Double to open up the 3rd for Wolf. Not time to be worried yet but the Brewers need him to settle down.
  5. If Gomez keeps it up he can hit in the #6 slot instead of 8 or 9.
  6. Wisconsin plays at 6:30 on Thursday and Marquette plays at 6:30 on Friday. Both games are on reportedly on truTV--I wonder if they will be on CBS in the Milwaukee area.
  7. Wisconsin's going to be ready. Belmont hasn't played anyone of Wisconin's caliber the whole year. They lost to Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Wisconsin is bound to be a popular upset pick because of the 33 point performance. It's almost a reverse upset because of the predictions, but I'll take UW to the Sweet 16.
  8. Worst performance of the Bo Ryan era, considering the importance of the game. Perhaps enough to get bumped to a 5 seed?
  9. This was the 7th largest earthquake ever recorded. I think because it was on a submarine thrust fault it was not possible for it to occur under land. Japan is well prepared for earthquakes but you can't do much for the people along the coast when it occurred so close to the shore. The tsunami will likely be responsible for the majority of the deaths, but it appears that there was only superficial building damage. Hopefully the death toll is not too bad and rescue efforts go well. It is interesting also that this is causing oil prices to drop, since Japan is the 3rd largest importer and their economy will likely slow down for a little while.
  10. Ok, that is going about 10 steps too far. Roenicke is not a doctor and it is not up to him to decide whether Grienke's injury required further investigation or not. This definitely hurts the Brewers' chances since he could easily miss 1/6 of the season if the recovery is slow. If he waits for the pain to be gone before he starts throwing, the season will have already started. It will probably be wise to give him a rehab start or two in the minors as well. In the meantime, they open the season with few off days and a mediocre rotation that doesn't look much better than 2010. But it's not like he's done for the season or will have some sort of lingering arm problem. The main point is that I really hope you haven't already passed judgement on Roenicke. If you've already decided that he's a bad manager after 2 weeks, what's the point of even being a Brewers fan? Even Pirates fans are optimistic about the season in Spring Training.
  11. Does Greinke get paid for the time he is missing because (I assume) he violated his contract?
  12. Looks like all snow in Wausau. Maybe a little mixy for a few hours if some warm air wraps in. This storm has the look of a 4-8" type event but it will be like most March snowstorms--wet and heavy. Yikes...the thought of snow seems so far away now...good luck with up and down Wisconsin spring ;-)
  13. Looks like all rain for Milwaukee. Snow possible in central WI. The jet stream is already in the spring pattern--not sure if it will shift back but winter is over for now.
  14. Yikes, Diebler's on fire. A complete defensive breakdown. It's also clear that Jon Leuer is critical to UW's success against elite teams. Hopefully they make a run in the 2nd half but this game looks like it's over. As for the CBS coverage, I believe that is the first Badger basketball of the entire season that was not available on either cable TV or ESPN3.
  15. Yep it's most important to avoid a hot 6/7 seed. Looking at the 6/7 seeds in Bracketology, I would not want to see the Badgers against Xavier or George Mason. There is also a decent group of Big East teams that could meet the Badgers in the second round. Texas A&M or Temple wouldn't be too bad. It is certainly a difficult game and upsets are common. I disagree with the 2 or 3 not being important. It could potentially be a huge advantage to get a 2 seed. The good news is that the fall of BYU and SDSU opens up Duke to take the last #1 seed and remove them as a potential Sweet 16 opponent. I would hate to see Duke in the Sweet 16 in a 2/3 game and getting a 2 seed would remove that possibility. The Badgers will not go in the same bracket as Purdue or Ohio State. That leaves Texas, SDSU, and BYU, or maybe a surprise Big East tourney winner like Louisville which would also be a tough draw. Anything less than the Sweet 16 would be a major disappointment with this team peaking at the right time. Elite 8 or Final 4 is possible with the right bracket. I guess we should worry about the Badgers beating Indiana tonight first though.
  16. Now that Brandon Davies is gone, BYU is going to plunge in the rankings. I won't comment on whether the expulsion was justified, but this certainly won't help BYU's recruiting. They certainly lost a #1 seed and have a good chance at falling below Wisconsin. The Badgers are in good position for a 3 seed if they survive Indiana and lose to Ohio State as expected. A 2 seed is still well within their reach, which would put them in great position for at least the Sweet 16. Matchups are most important though.
  17. I think Michigan State still has a good shot thanks to Minnesota's horrific collapse. At 6-10 in conference and losers of 7 out of 8, the Gophers are out. Michigan State is 8-8 in conference with 2 winnable games left vs. Iowa and at Michigan. I guess there is the possibility that only 4 Big Ten teams could get in, but barring a big tourney run by Michigan or Penn State, Michigan state should get in since they have the best resume. There are no easy wins in the Big Ten, and I think a few of the mediocre teams have been worn down by the long, hard schedule. On the other hand, Wisconsin just continues to get better. By the way, I didn't realize that Gene Keady was helping out St. John's as an assistant--but I'm sure his advice is a big reason why SJU is one of the most dangerous teams in the country now.
  18. I'm not familiar with most of the options but I think Nightmare would be a great choice.
  19. No. I wouldn't want it and it wouldn't succeed. I do enjoy watching MLS occasionally, especially Seattle because they have such awesome crowds. That kind of atmosphere would never be duplicated in Milwaukee. The MLS has a ridiculously long season: March 15-October 23. Out of those 7 months, 3 have predominately bad weather. 6 out of the 7 months compete with the Brewers for both attendance and TV time. After August 1st, all the attention is on the Packers unless the Brewers happen to still be in the race. Most of the games are on Saturdays--the Brewers average about 40,000 in attendance on Saturdays and everyone else is out doing something if the weather is nice. Likewise, there are plenty of other sports entertainment options in Milwaukee. There's only so much entertainment money to go around, so every MLS ticket is one less Bucks or Brewers ticket or movie ticket or trip to the golf course/bowling alley/etc. If the Bucks leave, then I'm all for it. The odds of an NHL team coming will still be next to nothing (why occupy a 25 year old arena when KC has a new one and about 3 Canadian cities are begging for a team to come back). People will also be more receptive toward a new team due to the heartbreak of losing the Bucks (see Seattle again). The Bucks do not have a large fanbase and would probably leave without too much ado, but the symbolic loss of the Bucks would help a new team that shows up a few years later to fill the void. The problem is that MLS is expanding now and the situation may be different in 2015-2020 when the Bucks would hypothetically leave.
  20. I missed the game--please tell me Gus Johnson had the call on Gasser's 3...
  21. The Cardinals are still a good team, but that's a huge loss. The Brewers survived without Gallardo in 2008 (barely) and he's not on the same level as Wainwright. This is a major loss to the NL Central and the overall pitching dominance of the National League.
  22. I tend to agree with him for the most part. Most sports press conferences consist of about 90% of the questions being cliche or just plain dumb. As for autographs, I wouldn't want to spend days of my life signing my name either. He seems to understand that dealing with it is part of the gig. Kudos to Greinke for speaking his mind. Fortunately, the Brewers beat writers appear to be above-average and Brewers fans are some of the best in baseball. My only concern is that he's never been in a pennant race before, so if the Brewers are making a run in September/October, the media and fan pressure will grow exponentially. Conversely, the Brewers should have a fun, easy going clubhouse this year which should help ease any stress. He has won a Cy Young and been the focal point of the KC Royals for years, so I doubt there will be any major issues. Overall I just like that he's playing because he loves baseball and not for the fame or money.
  23. Yeah there are a few teams that are gaming the system, but it's like social security--the solution is to catch the offenders and change the rules, not to get rid of it entirely.
  24. I do feel a little bad for Yuniesky because Brewers fans are going to be after him from day one. I hope he doesn't hear a few boos when he is announced on Opening Day, but seriously, all he has to do is make one glaring mistake and the fans are going to be all over him. That being said, I'm not sure that we should just throw a rookie shortstop out there when we are going for the pennant this year. Hardy and Escobar both had painful learning curves. Of course there is high upside with a young player, but at least we know what to expect with Betancourt. He will probably end up being terrible, and then the fans will get on him and management will send him packing like they (eventually) did with Suppan. However, maybe being on a good team in a pennant chase with a new manager in front of large home crowds will do some good for him. My feeling is that it probably will make no difference, but there isn't much risk in trying him out for a month. If he stinks and Cruz puts up good numbers in ST and April, the situation will take care of itself.
  25. Seems like a mess in WI. I was out on a camping trip this weekend and I haven't looked at all at this system. The forecast says 2-5" this evening into tonight. The long range is for above-normal temperatures early this week and then a cooling trend towards the weekend.
