  1. This has to be the grittiest lineup since the Jason Kendall days...
  2. The rain arrived early, the game today will almost certainly be called off.
  3. Huge hit for GoGo but not smart baserunning. Why not just steal the base?
  4. I guess we finally have a Roenicke thread. 1) Kotsay: Not upset yet, will be if he's still here when Corey Hart returns. Would like to see Nyjer Morgan play more also--but at least he's been putting Morgan in later in the game. I suspect the Kotsay situation may be related to upper management. 2) Nieves: Not related to Roenicke. If he's on the roster, he should play occasionally. I also do not know his relationship with the pitchers, but since Narveson is doing well with him, why mess with it? 3) Gomez: I have no problem with Gomez batting second until Corey Hart gets back. The replacement options aren't much better. 4) Betancourt: Best shortstop on the roster, hence he should start. 5) Gomez/Morgan: Competition is good, but I think a platoon is the right way to handle this. We'll see I guess. I am also a big fan of the defensive shifts. I haven't seen much small ball. The Brewers have 6 stolen bases and have put down 4 sacrifice bunts in 12 games. Perhaps some of that is due to lack of opportunity? He should also get lots of credit for the quick recovery from the 0-4 start and for the overall comments of players which suggest that they enjoy playing for him. He does need to learn how to double switch.
  5. There is a chance the rain could hold off until after the game on Saturday. The current NWS forecast doesn't have the rain starting until 5 PM Saturday. Sunny and nice today and on Sunday.
  6. I'll deal with the range problems. It is paramount that he continues makes the easy plays. Errors on routine plays are what get pitchers rattled and leads to big innings. If a few grounders get past a diving (flopping) Betancourt, it's not the end of the world. He's also already drawn 2 walks--he'll surpass his career high of 23 easily at this pace ;-)
  7. Welcome to BF.net Brian! Don't get discouraged from posting by this thread, we have lots of strong opinions on this board. I like your original question: But the phrases "stats revert to the mean" and "incredibly weak links in the lineup" are somewhat asking for trouble when mentioned 11 games into the season. Because of McGehee's history, there has always been some reason to fear that he could return to a replacement level player. The stats show nothing but good numbers. A solid .803 career OPS. 3.4 WAR in 2010. He's also 28 years old this year--definitely not an age where you would expect decline. By all accounts he has a great work ethic. No need to be worried in the long run. In the short term, if McGehee keeps struggling Fielder could start getting Barry Bonds treatment. That could easily happen within a few weeks and would not be good if McGehee can't take advantage.
  8. Just an absolute bomb. I wonder how far that one would have gone on a hot, humid night?
  9. I was hoping that would be ruled a single--brings back some CC Sabathia memories.
  10. Yep, he's too risky as a defensive liability. Let him light up AAA this year and give him the starting 1B job for Opening Day 2012.
  11. There's hope for this game. Precipitation is showery and not especially heavy. I think they will at least attempt to play it.
  12. Amazing hailstones. Saw some like that in Missouri once, they looked like missiles falling from the sky. One of the storm chasers got some good video of the Merrill tornado:
  13. My prediction is Boston over Vancouver in 6. Really pulling for the Preds and Sharks though.
  14. Wisconsin really dodged a bullet today. Things never destabilized as much as they could have and there was a strong capping inversion due to outflow from Saturday's storms. The original forecasts were for widespread severe weather but all the storm reports were confined to a few individual storms. There could still be some severe weather on that narrow line moving through Southern WI, but it's too stable for anything major.
  15. Judging by the radar, that storm near Appleton has some huge hail and probably a tornado. Edit: tornado and baseball sized hail now officially reported with that storm. Look out.
  16. I do feel bad for players like Reed that are stuck proving themselves in limited appearances, especially in the very difficult PH role. However, the Brewers need to put their best players on the field and they can not afford to wait around for him to start getting hits.
  17. Kotsay just earned himself another start with that walk.
  18. This reminds me of those Ned Yost Sunday "give up" lineups that often managed to score 8 runs.
  19. From watching the games it sounds like Kotsay has "Mr. Jones" by the Counting Crows.
  20. Latest trends continue to indicate that this will be primarily a Central/Northern WI event (in terms of the supercell/tornado threat). The best chance for a large or long-track tornado is in NW Wisconsin around Eau Claire. Southern WI will eventually get storms with the cold front, but not until well after dark. Expect to see a line of storms blow up around Rochester at about 3-4 PM and then race off across central and northern WI. The line will then continue to develop SW along the cold front. Storms will reach Madison in the 9-10 PM range most likely. There could be a few storms that form ahead of the main line--in that case Madison and Milwaukee could be impacted earlier in the evening and with more dangerous weather than currently anticipated. Because of the inherent uncertainties in predicting where these storms will initiate, it is best to continue to follow the forecasts carefully, especially when tornado watches are issued later today when conditions become more favorable for storm formation.
  21. Very interesting setup today. No high risk because outflow from last night's storms will suppress the storms from firing until the late afternoon. This will also prevent as widespread of a severe outbreak as was originally anticipated. That being said, any storms that do fire will be capable of producing very large hail and tornadoes. I'm confident that storms will fire right around the Mississippi River this afternoon and then race to the NE at 50-60 mph. The best chance of tornadoes is over western WI and especially central and northern portions of the state. It is important to take any severe weather warnings seriously because these storms will produce weather more commonly seen in tornado alley than Wisconsin. I doubt they will open the roof because if it does decide to rain it will be too windy to close it.
  22. They will probably go to a high risk if everything holds. They only average about 3 "high risk" days per year over the entire country, so it is definitely not something to take lightly. The last high risk over Wisconsin was June 7, 2007 which was notable because Madison closed schools for it. Nothing happened in Southern WI but it did produce a long track tornado in Oconto county whose damage path is still visible from space. The storms will be moving at 60-70 mph so it is important to take any severe weather warnings seriously.
