  1. Last year in terrace 404 (all the way down the line), it was quite wild in the concourse--definitely a sight to behold when you're one of the only sober ones down there. The people sitting next to us were friendly but extremely hammered. This year we got upgraded to 409 so maybe it gets better as you get closer to home plate.
  2. Great for the Marlins! The question is, what will be the new bottom team in attendance after the new stadium opens? That would be terrible. We already have enough MLB teams wearing red or blue--it's nice to have some with teal or purple or other interesting colors.
  3. The reason MLB will never change the name World Series is the same reason they won't change the brand "Aunt Jemima" Besides, we all know the world revolves around America anyway.
  4. If the game keeps going this way, Xavier wins by 10. However, I trust that Bo will make some smart adjustments again at half. We need to get more open jump shots.
  5. Xavier was an unimpressive 5-5 in their last 10 going into the tourney including a loss to Temple in the 2nd round of the A10 tourney. Still, they won the Puerto Rico tipoff back in November by beating Missouri, Virginia Tech, and Memphis in 4 days. Overall, a very impressive non-conference schedule but mediocre down the stretch. I hear they are very athletic and many people have them (including myself) beating Pittsburgh in the Sweet 16.
  6. The Badgers haven't been this bad all year, but the cold shooting and lack of athleticism have been common themes.
  7. I like Robin19's diagnosis. If that's true, then I'm suddenly a much bigger Macha fan. Weeks did go 2-3 yesterday and is now batting .289.
  8. It might not be a significant number, but if Weeks and Kendall are each going to get on base 1/3 of the time, I'd much rather have Weeks running the bases than Kendall. I also don't buy into the "running into outs" argument since Weeks has stolen 78 career bases and only been caught 14 times. I don't think there's a statistical way to prove it, but I'm convinced that certain pitchers are going to have trouble when a fast runner is on first base. I know Macha is just throwing out ideas, but it still concerns me. Some managers (LaRussa) will change the lineup constantly, but I believe that it's best to pick a lineup and stick to it--and that the lineup should have a fast, high OBP hitter in the leadoff spot. Hardy/Braun/Fielder hit plenty of home runs, but I thought that we were trying not to rely on the home run so much. I'd rather be running steals/hit and runs with Weeks on base instead of having Kendall sitting on first waiting for a HR. Hardy/Braun/Fielder combined for 100 doubles last year--and although Kendall is no Gary Bennett, Weeks would likely score from first more often than Kendall.
  9. That's true, but if Macha keeps making comments like this, his grace period is going to disappear very quickly if we lose a few games once the season starts. Ned's rationale often had to do with intangibles like 'grit'. Macha seems to be flat out making things up--his comments on Villanueva and now implying that Kendall does a good job getting on base. It's nice that Macha speaks his mind, but if this is how he thinks, maybe I'd rather remain ignorant. It seems like Macha's thinking is based on either past experience with Oakland (in Kendall's case) or from what he's seen in ST. I don't know if it will actually show up in his decisions, but I am definitely concerned.
  10. I can't believe Macha is seriously considering this. Rickie Weeks scored 89 runs last year. If the purpose of being a leadoff hitter is to score runs, then Weeks did a great job. Instead of having Weeks on base 1/3 of the time making opposing pitchers constantly worry about him stealing bases, we'll be stuck with our worst hitter? At least Yost's Kendall experiment had some statistical logic behind it.
  11. I'm more upset about the negativity over the WBC than the actual injury. It could have easily happened with the Brewers as well--he's actually playing in less games with team USA than he would have been with the Brewers. It's not like he's taking more swings this way and it isn't like he's only going to give 80% at the plate in a Brewers ST game. The WBC is extremely popular everywhere except the US. It has been great for global baseball and will continue to be in the future.
  12. Wow, that Lake Effect band hasn't moved in over 12 hours!!! This is a very unusual situation for the winds to be stuck out of the Northeast for so long. Mitchell Airport has recieved an amazing 10.9 inches as of 9:00 AM!!!!! It looks to me like only the Southeast 1/4 of Milwaukee County is getting the heavy snow, with light snow elsewhere. Skies are probably mostly sunny in northern Milwaukee County. The NWS is saying 10-15 inches for the area with the heavy snow, although the band still isn't showing any signs of moving, so the airport could potentially get even more than 15. Edit: Check out the freeway cams right now. It is completely sunny at I-94 and 27th street, while the cameras at College Ave. and Mitchell Airport are cloudy with snow falling.
  13. The Royals aren't going anywhere this year or next year or the year after. They continuously make moves that place them in the lower tier of small market teams that consistently finishes in last place. While it is true that draft picks (even high rounds) don't usually pan out, you can increase the probability by getting more draft picks and by hiring scouts/executives to make smart decisions. The Royals do not have the spending power to win any way except through the draft. Instead, they choose to spend millions of dollars on mediocre free agents with little upside. They will always have the lowest or the second lowest payroll in the division--kind of like the Rays. The only proven way to win it that situation is to draft, draft, draft.
  14. Rumor from the jsonline.com blog comments is that the Brewers have 1,000 tickets held back for Opening Day, available in person only tomorrow.
  15. Geoff Jenkins' ankle disagrees with that definition. Edit: Warning--do not click on that link with a full stomach
  16. Ok...just took a look at the new models. There is still some disagreement but I'm confident in this forecast. -Madison and Milwaukee will see a brief burst of heavy rain with possible thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon. Sleet could mix in with the rain. Overnight, the rain will change to snow with less than 2" possible. The NWS should cancel the winter weather advisory and issue a flood watch in my opinion. -Areas around a Dells to Sheboygan line (currently in the ice storm warning) are a big question mark. Only one model is showing the ice storm, the other puts them right on a line between mostly rain and 6"+ of snow. There's no way to know for sure what type of precip will fall here. -LaCrosse to Appleton can expect heavy snow, with a quick shot of up to 8" of heavy wet snow likely (anyone in the current winter storm warning)
  17. Yep...I was right! Unfortunately, I went home for the day but I will definitely stop by more often if you are going to have Spring Training games on!
  18. I think I know if you were wearing a Brewers shirt today (so was I...)
  19. Lots of question marks for the forecast on Thursday. The rain/snow line should set up somewhere across Southern Wisconsin. Since I have no idea where exactly the line will be, here's a map of the probability of getting 4+" of snow on Thursday. There is still an outside shot of Southern WI getting a decent snowstorm, but totals are more likely to be in the 1-4" range with more the farther north you go. http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/wwd/day2_psnow_gt_04.gif
  20. Those comments about being careful with starters after the 6th inning concern me. Yost went with two different strategies in 2007 and 2008 and it seemed like leaving the starters in worked out much better. There's no Ben Sheets or CC Sabathia this year to suck up innings, so the bullpen is almost guaranteed to see more innings than last year. If we compound this by pulling starters when they get into jams in the middle innings, it's going to quickly overwork our middle relievers. In addition, I don't understand why there is a fear of starters blowing a game when they are in the 80-100 pitch range. We have a rotation with plenty of experience, they should be capable of pitching out of jams. I do see the other argument though--if we assume that the bullpen is likely to be a stronghold compared to the starting rotation, why not let them into the game earlier--especially if we have a 13-man pitching staff. As for the order of the starting pitchers--Macha can pull them out of a hat if he wants to, it doesn't matter after the first week of the season anyway.
  21. I know it would never happen, but I would like to see the higher OPS guys moved up to get those extra few dozen ABs over the course of the season. At the same time, the #1 spot should be a guy with a high OBP and speed, since having runners on base seems to disrupt the pitcher (maybe someone has a stat on pitchers' performance with runners on vs. bases empty). Weeks Braun Fielder Hardy Cameron Hart Hall/Lamb Kendall Pitcher
  22. Thanks hawing :-) I guess I should have taken my own advice and driven carefully on icy roads--$2,500 lesson learned. Snow total in Madison was 6.8" from that storm, bringing the season to 66.6". Last year at this time Madison was at 86.7". Hopefully we won't be getting anywhere near that this winter.
  23. I've definitely seen plenty of these things at Madison--but I agree with statman that there's a definite difference between science/math/engineering courses and humanities. Grading is a very touchy subject and it varies greatly by department/major. I took Econ 101 last year, which is the "weeding out" class for economics/business majors. I was around the middle of the class but was completely shocked when I got an 'AB' in the class. It turned out they curved the class where 50% get an AB or higher. I was used to math classes, where 50% get a C or lower. I have heard stories of people complaining to professors that they "are paying too much money" to receive such a low grade in a class. In the end, I'm not sure how much it matters--the business students need to maintain a 3.7 or 3.8 to go anywhere, while science/engineers do just fine with a 3.2. I'm not really sure when we got away from the idea that a "C" was average, but Madison has a 3.1 average GPA, so I guess a "B" is average now--and that goes up to about 3.3 for seniors. In the end, the better students are going to make it out on top. However, it seems that the overall bumping up of the lower students reflects a general trend in society. The people that failed the most are the ones who are getting the government bailout money, right?
  24. Find cheap starters to replace Sabathia and Sheets -- check Avoid arbitration with current players -- check Fill in bullpen -- check Find a respectable new manager/coaching staff -- check Long term contracts--Fielder signed for 2010--nothing on Corey Hart I didn't see a need to do anything at 3B or Catcher I know he didn't put together a World Series team, but I think we have a solid team for $90 million based on the age of the players. They aren't 23 years old anymore--Hardy, Weeks, and Fielder cost 5-10 times as much as they did a few years ago. We could have traded them and put in Escobar, Gamel, Nelson, etc. but we chose to spend the money and keep them. Grade: B+ (above what I expected, but nothing extraordinary)
  25. I totaled my girlfriend's car in that 1" of snow last Friday night--the roads didn't look that bad but I hit some ice and went into a guard rail at 30 mph--no bounce, just crunch. Winter wins.
