  1. Fortunately, the lake effect snow band has moved back over the lake. I'm not sure why the NWS freaked out about that, it never looked like the band was going to move very far onshore to me.
  2. Shooting a missile at an asteroid would be a bad idea. It would likely blow up into a ton of smaller pieces which would all still rain down on the earth in a spectacular, yet fiery disaster. We wouldn't be wiped out, but you could still destroy a decent chunk of land with a smaller piece (e.g. Siberia 1908). The better option is to just give the thing a little bump and let it keep going on a different path--but that of course would be a more difficult maneuver.
  3. Going skydiving once was good enough for me. That looks completely insane, which I'm sure is why they do it.
  4. Last year just about everyone got nailed...it just seemed like randomness to me. Historically, the lakeshore counties usually win out due to the added lake effect snow/enhancement, but that hasn't been the case as much recently. I don't have any Rock County totals for this year, but even after today's snowfall, Rockford, IL will still be about 5" behind Madison. You guys sure got nailed with this one though...just flurries in Madison today while 20 miles south had storm totals of over a foot. Crazy stuff. If I had to guess, I think West Bend or Waukesha is "winning" this year based on that extra 10" or so from November 30, but I only have data for the big cities. By the way, a quick fluffy 2-4" from a clipper is possible Monday. The coldest night of the week should be Thursday night--even Milwaukee could get to 10 below with 20 below in the country.
  5. I don't believe in projections. They only had the Rays at 89 last year.
  6. As long as they keep the advertising off the uniforms, I'm fine. We don't want the Brewers to be like the Milwaukee Miller Lites (I mean Milwaukee Wave). http://graphics.jsonline.com/graphics/sports/gen/img/apr08/howes425.jpg
  7. I recall the Scott Hatteberg chapter in Moneyball argued that a team of 2002 Scott Hattebergs would have scored something like 900 runs in a season. Not sure how that is calculated, though.

  9. Yeah, looks like a close miss, with 1" additional in Milwaukee/Madison and 2-3" near the WI/IL border. Still...it wouldn't be unprecedented to see the band move 20 miles north, but I don't see it happening this time.
  10. Yeah, that's correct--the Sullivan NWS is a big fan of the ECMWF (the European forecast model) which has apparently stuck with a stronger version of the system than the North American models. Unfortunately, there isn't a good free version of those runs on the Internet that I know of, so I can't say much on its forecast. The NAM and GFS are the two North American models that they like to refer to which have output available for free. Obviously, there is way more to the forecast than the models, but usually you can get a fairly good idea of where the precipitation is going to fall (when it's all snow) from the models. Anyway...the models come out in the next 2 hours so I'll post an update about what I think later tonight--but the NWS is saying totals of 6-9" now for the Madison/Milwaukee area. How they get 9" of snow from this, I have no idea.
  11. The whole Fahrenheit scale is kind of a waste...I don't know why we don't just change over--it isn't that hard. Roughly speaking, -10 C is 10 F, 0 C is 30F, 10 C is 50 F, 20 C is 70 F and 30 C is 90 F. If they would spend about 1/4 the money they are spending on those digital TV conversion commercials, we could be using Celsius in a year.
  12. I was about to bump this!! -I agree with the 3-6" forecast for Friday. Heaviest totals near the WI/IL border. The major storm scenario doesn't look like it will pan out, only a light to moderate snow is expected. Start time is Friday mid-morning. -Next week will be extremely cold. Timing should be a bit delayed--a clipper will bring maybe 1-3" of snow on Monday night with the arctic air coming in behind that. Lows on Thursday and Friday morning could be -10 F near the lake up to maybe -25 F in some inland locations. That's still a ways off though, but it sure looks like the very cold air that has been over Alaska is headed straight for the Midwest.
  13. I'll say 13 wins (8 in the first half) and 175 K. I worry because he hasn't thrown a full season in the big leagues--what if hitters start to adjust after seeing him more? What if he tires out down the stretch? What if the pressure of being the ace is too much?
  14. This is a great move for the Cubs. I agree with the comments about the Cubs now valuing OBP--I wish the Brewers would take notice. Weeks and Fielder are good about getting on base, but that's about it. This is also a major upgrade over Fukudome in RF. Fukudome might not be the best defensive CF in the world, but his low slugging makes less of a difference there than in right. The Brewers were inferior to begin, we lost our two best starting pitchers, and the Cubs have outperformed us in the offseason. On paper the Cubs look like the NL World Series favorite and 10-15 games better than the Brewers (95-100 wins vs. 80-85). There are a few issues--the injury risk--and Bradley's insane BABIP last year. I don't see him replicating last year's numbers, but even if he gets close, it's a major upgrade. Any potential conflict with Zambrano or defensive liabilities seem like wishful thinking. Despite all that, the Brewers and Astros are the teams with the best shot at catching them, and the weak bottom half of the division could help get the wildcard out of the central again. There's still a few months to go to make some moves...
  15. Ok...I'm back from sunny Florida--it was nice to get a break from winter for a few days, but driving through that ice storm last Friday was horrible. Looks like just light snow on New Years Day--just some flakes in the south, maybe 1-2" in northern Wisconsin.
  16. Hard to pick sides when both sides are giant media corporations which have repeatedly been interested in profit over customer satisfaction. How about Viacom lowers the fee and AOL Time Warner lowers cable rates? Also, I haven't heard of any of the other cable companies having problems with the price increases, so why the big stink from Time Warner?
  17. I'm glad that Wisconsin is going ahead with the outdoor hockey game. The one at Lambeau Field seemed to be a success and I have no doubt that they could get 80,000 for one at Camp Randall. I assume the sight lines would be horrible, but it's more for the experience than actually being able to see anything... As for the game at Wrigley--I really enjoyed the Buffalo game last year, hopefully this one will be just as good--and showcase a great young Blackhawks team.
  18. Definitely a solid performance by the Badgers but they come up short yet again. They don't seem to have a "go to" guy late in games and seem to just quietly fade away--even in some of their wins. I really like what I see from Leuer, but with Landry having an off night, there wasn't anyone else to step it up. Using the deep bench is usually nice, but we don't have the depth that we had in years past--instead of Hughes coming off the bench, we have Jordan Taylor, who definitely has room for improvement. The Big Ten is going to be tough this year--perhaps the #2 conference behind the Big East. This might be the year that Bo fails to make the NCAA tourney--Michigan State, Purdue, and Ohio State look to be the favorites, with Minnesota, Michigan, and Illinois all fielding solid teams. Even Iowa and Northwestern aren't that bad this year.
  19. If Turnbow had any sort of 3rd pitch at all, he would have been deadly. Anything to question the fastball--a changeup, sinker, anything. When he was hitting 97-98 he was great, but even in his good times when he lost control of the breaking pitch he was done for. As mentioned, he also could not pitch with runners on base at all--now that I think of it, what was Yost thinking when he brought that guy in to get out of jams? (and I'm not even a Yost basher!) I really miss the guy, though. He was probably the only pitcher I have ever seen where when he comes in, everyone in the ballpark stops what they were doing/talking about and watches him pitch. You always knew something exciting was going to happen when he came it--although it usually wasn't in a good way. Definitely one of a kind.
  20. I wish I was getting out of here on Tuesday, but we're driving to the Champs Sports Bowl leaving on Friday morning--and with more snow predicted Thursday night before it changes to rain, I'm worried about not getting there in time.
  21. The two day Tuesday-Wednesday storm will likely bring storm totals over 10 inches again to most of Southern Wisconsin. Then...it's going to get really warm by Friday, with flooding possible by Saturday. Fortunately, I will be in Florida next weekend and will finally catch a break from this weather!
  22. Looks like a 3-6" type event for Tuesday/Wednesday. Light precip over long duration. Possible rain/rain snow mix in the Milwaukee area for at least part of the time.
  23. Exactly :-) Although...when I was visiting colleges, the professor at St. Louis University told me that he absolutely hated snow. Needless to say, I decided not to go to school there. In my defense, I did have to shovel out my girlfriend's car, but it only took about a half hour and it got unstuck on the first try.
  24. I agree with the concern about McClung. He's gotten lots of hype because he stepped up big in a pennant race game, but he was inconsistent the rest of the year and usually didn't pitch more than 5 or 6 innings at a time. Not only that, we're counting on Gallardo as our #1 and he's never pitched a full season in the big leagues. Parra had too many innings last year--and we've seen what happened to the Tigers pitchers who were overworked. I really would like to get another arm.
  25. The Saturday/Sunday event isn't too big of a deal with snowfall totals (I personally think 4-7" is a big exaggeration and 2-5" is more likely). The big story will be the wind, which might make travel nearly impossible on Sunday morning. Leave Saturday afternoon or wait until Monday. Believe it or not, there's some indication of a clipper on Tuesday followed by a panhandle low for Christmas eve. There is still lots of model disagreement, but we could easily see another 6"+ from that storm if everything comes together. It's way too early to call for that one, though. After Christmas, looks like near normal temperatures and possibly a rain event toward the 27th-29th time period. That's really far off though.
