    36! one away from tying aroldis chapman's major league record. the brewers' next opponent for the next four games, the pirates, have the fewest strikeouts in the national league (505 to the brewers' league leading 687).

    rob scahill has been outrighted to the minor leagues. i'm not clear if he's accepted the outright assignment or not--he has the right to refuse it and declare free agency.

    i know it's been discussed elsewhere, but it deserves its own thread. the record for at least one strikeout per appearance to start a season in major league history for a pitcher working exclusively in relief is 37 appearances--set by aroldis chapman in 2014. corey knebel is at 34 to start off 2017, which ranks him second all time. the brewers have one game left against the cardinals, who rank 9th in the national league in strikeouts. then on to this weekend against the padres, who rank 2nd in the national league in strikeouts (21 behind the league leading brewers). after throwing 15 pitches on friday, knebel threw 13 pitches on tuesday, and 21 pitches on wednesday.

    here's the bullpen now, with number of minor league options remaining. jacob barnes (2) oliver drake (0) paolo espino (2, already burned his 2017 option by spending more than 20 days in the minor leagues while on the 40-man) josh hader (2, already burned his 2017 option) jared hughes (0) corey knebel (1) wily peralta (0) carlos torres (0) already optioned, but can be recalled at any point during the season (requires a 10-day minimum stay in the minors unless replacing an injured player): tyler cravy (currently on 7-day disabled list) taylor jungmann brent suter (2, already burned his 2017 option) all other optioned pitchers on the 40-man are either starters or recovering from an injury. a spot is open on the 40-man roster if the brewers wish to add another reliever.

    history does not repeat itself. brent suter, yesterday's 26th man, was optioned last night. the roster is back to 25.

    it's my understanding that the 26th man (brent suter) has to kept on the roster for both games of the doubleheader. but, it's also my understanding that the brewers could option woodruff after game one today and recall another player who's been optioned for at least 10 days for game two (or select the contract of a minor leaguer after freeing up another spot on the 40-man). the brewers would also have the right to place a player on the major league disabled list after game one and recall a player for game two.

    brent suter recalled as the 26th man for today's doubleheader. the last time the brewers recalled a 26th man, they didn't send him down after the doubleheader; they kept tyler cravy for the rest of the season and optioned andy wilkins.

    brandon woodruff has had his contract selected and will start this afternoon's game. rob scahill was designated for assignment. if the brewers attempt to outright scahill to the minors and he goes unclaimed, he reserves the right to refuse the minor league assignment and elect free agency. woodruff has all three minor league options remaining. the 40-man roster remains full.

    you're describing transactions within the organization, so we won't bring free agent signings, trades and waiver claims into the equation. the aaa team has to maintain a full roster themselves. when a player is optioned or recalled, he is typically able to report to his new team in 24 hours (and usually less). when a player is designated for assignment, the mlb team has up to seven days (used to be ten days) to decide whether to trade, release or attempt to outright that player to the minor leagues. outrighting is usually the hopeful outcome for management, because the player remains in the organization. but, it's important to note that said player remains in limbo for up to seven days--which may mean that management has to find ways to plug the roster holes internally at the minor league level(s) as they wait to see if they will be able to successfully outright that player to their minor leagues. the brewers have very few relievers that they can option right now--and they're not the ones struggling. thus, i don't predict a mass exodus via dfa and a mass recall/promotion from the minor leagues--unless the brewers have some immediate means of player replacement at the minor league level (players ready to return from the minor league disabled list, minor league free agents willing to sign, depth on the taxi squad, off day or postponed game, etc.).

    i would welcome designating oliver drake, optioning phillips, recalling espino and selecting the contract of kyle wren. the starters are going deeper as of late. it's time to stick with a 12-man pitching staff.

    agreed . . . especially with eric thames needing rest for his legs as well. at this point, any hitter could be brought up: --yadiel rivera could be recalled to allow hernan perez to play left field --any outfielder on the 40-man could be recalled --ivan de jesus, jr. or kyle wren could have his contract selected (wren could be optioned back; de jesus would have to be outrighted to be sent down) but when the brewers can't get their starters to last more than six innings, an extra arm takes precedence.

    i am hoping it's kyle wren, but would not be surprised to see yadiel rivera recalled. jonathan villar needs some time off, and rivera can start at second and hernan perez in left.
