  1. webb released today. he was used pretty sparingly in camp, only appearing in three games and tossing 3.0 innings.
  2. chamberlain released today. although he still had three minor league options remaining, he had enough service time to veto any optioning to the minor leagues. with a healthy bullpen that appears to be set with many other players that cannot be optioned without their consent (neftali feliz, jhan marinez, carlos torres and possibly tommy milone), it makes sense for the brewers to fill the remaining three or four spots with players that can be optioned back and forth if they struggle. after all, there's optioned bullpen depth with michael blazek and damien magnifico, and one or more of jacob barnes, tyler cravy, taylor jungmann, corey knebel and brent suter that can be shuttled back and forth if need be. if there were injuries in the brewers' bullpen, chamberlain might still be with the organization.
  3. michael reed was told he's to report to class aa to start the season.
  4. in old news, the brewers optioned a number of players in the past few weeks to the minors. provided they each spend at least 20 days optioned to the minor leagues once the mlb season starts, their number of remaining options entering 2018 spring training follow in parentheses. they can be recalled and sent back down throughout the 2017 season. lewis brinson (2) ryan cordell (2) josh hader (2) jorge lopez (1) damien magnifico (1) brett phillips (2) taylor williams (2) and in today's roster moves, these players were optioned. provided they each spend at least 20 days optioned to the minor leagues once the mlb season starts, their number of remaining options entering 2018 spring training follow in parentheses. likewise, they can be recalled and sent back throughout the 2017 season. michael blazek (0) michael reed (1) yadiel rivera (0)
  5. i was really saddened to hear of david's decision to retire from baseball. i was really looking forward to seeing him make it the big leagues in a brewers uniform and me making every reasonable effort to be at that game to witness it and cheer him on. i admire his courage and strength, and i wish him the best on his next endeavors.
  6. point made on brewers.com that i didn't even consider until i read it: when you trade your starting catcher (martin maldonado) for another catcher, you likely don't intend for that acquisition to be playing in the minors, or even playing as a backup with the big league club.
  7. i don't either. one has to keep in mind that in addition to that injured player being called up (not to report) and earning major league pay and major league service time, the club also has to pay the salary of the player taking that injured player's vacated spot on the 40-man and/or 25-man roster.
  8. i'm not ready to make a prediction of a full roster just yet, but i do feel confident that no player on a minor league deal will have his contract selected in the days leading up to the 25-man roster deadline prior to opening day.
  9. it's more accurate to state that thames has used two of his minor league options. his contract with the brewers stipulates that he cannot be optioned, even though he has a minor league option remaining. also, at the end of his contract, he will be short of the six years of service to declare free agency, but he will be allowed to declare free agency.
  10. adrian houser has been optioned to the minor leagues. assuming he spends more than 20 days optioned this year, he will enter 2018 spring training with one minor league option remaining.
  11. i'm predicting that de jesus has his contract selected before opening day. assuming no candidates for the 60-day disabled list, it'll probably be at the expense of trying to outright yadiel rivera or jesus aguilar to the minor leagues. neither has been outrighted before, so if they go unclaimed, either will be forced to accept the minor league assignment.
  12. anyone else getting just ear-splitting noise on the kansas city audio feed of today's game?
  13. ignoring teams that share facilities, that would equate to five games played at maryvale for the entire course of spring training. there's no way that anyone could justify the costs to build and maintain a facility and its workforce for only five games.
  14. I'm just going on memory, but I can't think of a season we didn't have three catchers on the 40 man roster. As of late, the third was often a career minor league player but we always had someone who could be brought up in case of injury. 2015 was the last time the brewers carried three catchers on the 40-man roster for the entire season (jonathan lucroy, martin maldonado and juan centeno). the brewers opened the 2013, 2014 and 2016 seasons with only two catchers on their 40-man roster (lucroy and maldonado). there may have been other instances in recent years where a catcher (i.e. wil nieves in 2011) was outrighted or traded and replaced on the 40-man by another catcher (george kottaras), which led to a wider roster of rotating catchers on the 40-man.
  15. Or he could just play baseball all summer and get paid about half a million dollars to do it. Beats selling insurance. But he won't get half a million playing in AAA. He would be on a split contract, MLB minimum if in the majors, something like $15K or $20K (if lucky) playing in Colorado Springs... That is very common for players (pitchers and position guys alike).. prior to the last collective bargaining agreement, i believe there were minimum minor league salary requirements for players on the 40-man roster. as a player burned each option year, the minimum went up. i don't recall the amounts, but i seem to recall that the amount increased significantly after burning one's second option.
  16. the brewers have rarely carried three catchers on their 40-man roster for an entire season. 2017 could prove to be the exception if all stay healthy and pina makes the 25-man roster.
  17. pina wasn't added to the 40-man until 1 august 2016 (the day lucroy was traded).
  18. as i suspected, confirmed that susac has two minor league options remaining.
  19. rob scahill becomes the 18th non-roster invitee for 2017 camp. we've seen that david stearns likes to claim players and then later try to outright them to the minor leagues. it's probably a courtesy more than anything else to give a player that held a 40-man roster spot during the offseason a shot in big league camp.
  20. scahill has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to the minor leagues. he'll be in big league camp as a non-roster invitee.
  21. after blake parker was claimed by the angels, they designated him assignment and later outrighted him to the minor leagues. parker had the right to refuse the assignment, but it was announced yesterday that he will be a minor league non-roster invitee to the angels' big league camp this spring.
  22. in the cases of scahill and adrianza, neither have passed through waivers yet in their careers and been outrighted to the minor leagues. thus, if outrighted, they have to accept the minor league assignment. but if either is added to any team's 40-man roster after that, if that team wishes to outright him within their own organization, he can elect free agency and sign with any team.
  23. adrianza's 2017 media guide profile probably hadn't even been written yet. he has been designated for assignment to make room for new waiver claim jesús aguilar. aguilar is out of minor league options, but if the brewers wish to outright him to the minor leagues and no other team claims him, he will be forced to accept the minor league assignment. the 40-man roster remains full.
  24. scahill has never been outrighted off a 40-man roster before, so if he goes unclaimed or is not traded in the next ten days, the brewers can outright him to the minor leagues and he will be forced to accept the minor league assignment.
  25. rob scahill designated for assignment to make room for waiver claim ehire adrianza. adrianza enters 2017 spring training with no minor league options remaining, and he can refuse a minor league assignment if the brewers wish to outright him at the end of camp, or at any point during the season. scahill has never been outrighted before, so if the brewers do not work out a trade for him, or if another team does not claim him, the brewers can outright him to the minor leagues and he will be forced to accept the assignment. the 40-man roster remains full.
