  1. if the trade with the red sox is official as reported, the 40-man roster will remain at 39. tyler thornburg to boston for travis shaw and two minor league prospects. shaw will enter 2017 spring training with two minor league options remaining.
  2. travis shaw is on boston's 40-man roster; josh pennington is not. shaw has two minor league options remaining.
  3. yes, it's now $100,000 for a rule 5 draft pick. i have not seen confirmation on the amount paid back to the club (it was half before the increase) if the drafting club wishes to return the player to the original club. i have not seen confirmation that the cost for a claim of a player placed on outright waivers has increased from $50,000. given that the rule 5 draft cost increased, it makes sense that claiming a player on outright waivers increased in cost also.
  4. i don't ever recall a major league contract with a minor league split for a player out of minor league options. what kind of salary does the average aaa player get?
  5. the brewers have outrighted steve geltz to the minor leagues. because he's been outrighted once before, he has the right to refuse the minor league assignment and become a free agent. the roster is at 39.
  6. presumably, the brewers are close to a minor league deal with geltz as he was just outrighted.
  7. i don't get this move at all. walker was removed from the roster to make room for geltz.
  8. i like the move to 10-day disabled list. makes it easier to put a starting pitcher on the dl and perhaps miss only one start if there's an off day somewhere in that span.
  9. i'm grateful that there won't be a 26th man, because i think having such increases the likelihood of more brewers being plucked away via rule 5.
  10. chris carter designated for assignment to make room for eric thames. while it appears that thames has one minor league option remaining, his contract stipulates that he must provide consent to be sent to the minor leagues. the roster remains full at 40.
  11. per ken rosenthal, thames has to give his consent to be sent to the minor leagues.
  12. thames was optioned in 2012 and in 2013. he was also optioned in 2011, but was only optioned for 20 days that year (4 june - 23 june). it would appear that he has one minor league option remaining.
  13. one official transaction yesterday, with the waiver claim of steve geltz from the tampa bay rays and adam walker being designated for assignment. geltz definitely burned an option in 2016. it appears that his option was not burned in 2013, because he was optioned during 2013 spring training, and then outrighted to the minors during that same spring training. it's not clear if his option was burned in 2012, as his contract was selected on 11 august 2012, was optioned 18 august 2012, but not recalled when rosters expanded to 40 nor when the minor league season ended early in 2012 (the 20th day would've been 6 september). geltz should definitely have at least one minor league option remaining entering 2017 spring training. it'd be great to better understand how the 20-day clock works in spring training and during the month of september/when minor league seasons end before major league seasons do. officially, the roster still stands at 40, until chris carter's reported roster status change becomes official.
  14. but it appears that he has one minor league option remaining.
  15. 11 waiver claims in david stearns' first 12 months on the job equates to $550,000 paid to other clubs. $50,000 of that was returned to the brewers when they returned their two rule 5 draft picks. half a million bucks spent on waiver claims . . . it adds up.
  16. I would really be surprised if any changes involving the QO or roster sizes would be in effect immediately or this upcoming season. while 2017 isn't explicitly stated in this baseball america article, it's certainly implied. ken rosenthal confirms that if the cba is complete by 7 december and allows for 26-man rosters prior to the rule 5 draft on 8 december, then clubs can expect that a single rule 5 pick will be the 26th man on their roster all season. it's safe to assume that many more players will be drafted in the 2016 draft.
  17. I would really be surprised if any changes involving the QO or roster sizes would be in effect immediately or this upcoming season. while 2017 isn't explicitly stated in this baseball america article, it's certainly implied.
  18. to be fair, clubs should have known yesterday at the rule 5 draft protection deadline whether or not a 26th man rule would be in play in 2017. being able to bury a player as your 26th man (instead of 25th) may mean that more players are drafted and kept all season.
  19. i'm not clear on susac, and how the options clock works in spring training. he was optioned 29 march 2015 and recalled 18 april 2015, and spent the rest of the season on the major league roster or major league diasbled list. if you count the 29th as day 1, and count the 17th as final day, that's 20 days. the 2015 season started late--the giants' first game was sunday 6 april (there was likely a mlb game the night before, and there may have been an official game or two played overseas in 2015 . . . i can't remember). thus, the question is, does the time-served-while-optioned clock start right away in spring training the day the player is optioned, or does it start ticking when the exhibition season ends and 25-man rosters are set? and, is it 20 days or fewer, or 19 days or fewer, spent optioned that preserves the option for another season?
  20. five players had their contracts selected today and will enter 2017 spring training with three minor league options: lhp josh hader, rhp taylor williams, of lewis brinson, of ryan cordell and of brett phillips. of adam walker was claimed from the twins today. walker will enter 2017 spring training with two minor league options remaining. the 40-man roster is now full.
  21. looking to attend an away game next year, as i've seen plenty of maryvale. what's the must-see facility? salt river fields at talking stick?
  22. detroit does not have insurance on the $6 million they pledged to pay fielder for 2017, so they're on the hook for that full amount as agreed upon when they traded him to texas.
  23. looking to take in an away game at one of the newer stadiums in 2017 (have seen plenty of maryvale). is salt river at talking stick the most raved about venue, or is it something else?
