  1. i'm surprised they've played 8/4 for as much as they have this season. factor in ryan braun's continued absences, eric thames' struggles adapting to the major league grind, and the struggles of jonathan villar and keon broxton, and it's downright puzzling. the brewers' pitching has been acceptable during this skid. the offense has all but died.
  2. the latest collective bargaining agreement reduced the window from ten days to seven. i'm thinking that peralta is with the club so he can be activated and available if a trade depletes the club's 25-man roster. allows for a day or two for an acquired player to join the brewers, and that point, peralta could be designated for assignment.
  3. move might not happen until sunday.
  4. sogard says he expects to be activated tomorrow.
  5. wily peralta is with the brewers in philadelphia. no roster move announced yet.
  6. eric thames can play left. hernan perez can play left. heck, even eric sogard has seen time in left. as suggested in another thread, i'm sensing it's broxton being optioned, but for less than 20 days to ensure that he doesn't burn his final option.
  7. sogard played eight innings at second base last night for the timber rattlers. 0-2 with two walks and a run scored. it is possible that he'll be activated today.
  8. i would imagine that would set a single-year record for the brewers. schahill has already been designated for assignment twice in 2017.
  9. he's only five days into his rehab assignment, but craig counsell just stated that woodruff is close to becoming available.
  10. sogard went 0-3 and played the first five innings at second base last night for the timber rattlers. he has one more game with the class a team. it's unclear whether he'll continue his rehab at a higher minor league level or if he'll join the brewers in philadelphia and be activated tomorrow.
  11. agreed, seeing as he's the only non-catcher position player that can be optioned, but only if the brewers see a need to continue with a 13-man pitching staff. i'm hard pressed to recall the last time a brewers team relied so heavily on 13 pitchers. as mentioned in another thread, since cutting kirk nieuwenhuis, the brewers have pretty much gone without a true backup center fielder. i should not have stated that there's only one non-catcher position player that can be optioned. there are many other position players that can be optioned (orlando arcia, keon broxton, domingo santana and travis shaw) . . . but none save for broxton would be considered for a demotion. broxton has one minor league option remaining, but if he spends less than 20 days optioned in 2017, he wouldn't burn that option. perhaps when sogard is activated, it'll be broxton optioned to give him time to regain his form with colorado springs.
  12. sogard begins a minor league rehab assignment tonight with the timber rattlers.
  13. woodruff continues his minor league rehab with class aaa colorado springs effective today.
  14. agreed, seeing as he's the only non-catcher position player that can be optioned, but only if the brewers see a need to continue with a 13-man pitching staff. i'm hard pressed to recall the last time a brewers team relied so heavily on 13 pitchers. as mentioned in another thread, since cutting kirk nieuwenhuis, the brewers have pretty much gone without a true backup center fielder.
  15. eric sogard had gone on the disabled list. they were being cautious with ryan braun's return from his calf injury. recalling rivera allowed them to use hernan perez as their primary backup outfielder and with rivera covering the infield. since cutting kirk nieuwenhuis, the brewers have pretty much gone without a true center fielder other than keon broxton.
  16. to answer your question, another team could claim villar if the brewers tried to outright him to the minor leagues and that team would control him for the next three seasons after this one.
  17. back to a four-man position player unit: jett bandy, brett phillips, hernan perez and jesus aguilar.
  18. jett bandy has already burned his final option in 2017. had vogt been injured just a few days earlier, bandy might have spent less than 20 days optioned this year.
  19. worked out quite conveniently for the brewers. not so convenient for the likes of taylor jungmann, jorge lopez or paolo espino--all of whom have been optioned for at least 10 days.
  20. depending on how things shake out, both michael blazek and tyler webb could enter 2018 spring training without having burned their 2017 options. blazek only spent a couple days optioned at the beginning of the season before being outrighted, and was only optioned for four days this month. webb has only spent one day (as a yankee) optioned to the minor leagues.
  21. guerra to be activated today. will the club stick with five extra position players? i'm sensing yes--especially if stephen vogt is held back for precautionary reasons. if vogt goes on the dl and a catcher is recalled, i could see the brewers optioning brett phillips or yadiel rivera for guerra's spot.
  22. if the brewers are willing to pay him a major league salary and let him accrue major league service time, the brewers could call up adrian houser (not to report) and put him on the 60-day disabled list to free up a roster spot. worth the extra spend if the brewers are in the playoff hunt in late august.
  23. woodruff started his minor league rehab assignment 15 july. the brewers can keep him on a rehab assignment for up to 30 days. they could option him after those 30 days are up, recall him on 1 september, and not burn his 2017 option, because he would have spent less than 20 days optioned to the minor leagues. of course, the club could choose to activate him sooner than 30 days are up--especially if there's a strong need in the rotation for his services.
  24. i like the idea of calling up both catchers and having guys available (like kyle wren, mauricio dubon, lewis brinson, yadiel rivera, jonathan villar, hernan perez and keon broxton) to pinch run for them if any catcher reaches base late in the game (either as a starter or as a pinch hitter).
  25. what's going to be more interesting is who's on the 40-man and the major league disabled list on 31 august. those are the players eligible for the postseason.
