  2. hader and lopez have both burned their 2017 options by each spending more than 20 days optioned to the minor leagues. hader will enter 2018 spring training with two minor league options remaining; lopez with one. woodruff isn't on the 40-man (but will need to be added after the season ends to be protected from the rule 5 draft). if woodruff is added after 1 september, the club doesn't run the risk of him spending more than 20 days optioned in 2017 and burning one of three minor league options.
  3. what will be more interesting is determining how much longer the brewers will go with a 13-man pitching staff. with ryan braun out for the short term, they're playing with a three-man bench.
  4. same deal as before with tommy milone out and rob scahill in . . . the brewers still have only two relievers with minor league options in knebel and barnes . . . and both have been the club's most effective relievers a month into the season.
  5. tommy milone designated for assignment today. the brewers have seven days to trade, release or ask milone if he'll accept an outright assignment to the minor leagues (if he clears waivers). because milone has been outrighted before, he has the right to refuse the minor league assignment. rob scahill has his contract selected by the brewers. he is out of minor league options, and was outrighted to the minor leagues this past off-season. he can also refuse a minor league assignment if the brewers end up wanting to outright him to the minor leagues (assuming he clears waivers). the roster remains at 39.
  6. trade one guy out of options who can refuse a minor league assignment if the brewers wish to outright him for another guy out of options who can refuse a minor league assignment if the brewers wish to outright him. that's about it for what these two have in common. scahill certainly has more upside.
  7. nieuwenhuis accepted his outright assignment to colorado springs. he will be making a pro-rated $257,000 during his time in the minors.
  8. it should be noted that since designating kirk nieuwenhuis for assignment, the brewers have been operating with a four-man position player group. seeing that they won't have use of the dh until june, one has to wonder how long the club will operate this way . . . especially without a true center fielder on the roster.
  9. kirk nieuwenhuis was designated for assignment two days ago. he has been outrighted to the minor leagues before, and thus, can refuse a minor league assignment if the brewers wish to outright him. the brewers have five days left to trade, outright or release nieuwenhuis. the roster is at 39.
  10. with the outfield depth on the 40-man (plus kyle wren), i can't see how the brewers would want to outright nieuwenhuis to the minors and pay him that much.
  11. there's another reliever besides barnes who can be optioned (number of remaining options listed in parentheses below). however, both of these relievers still have earned run averages of 0.00. barring an injury to another player, a dfa or a trade is indeed looming when garza returns.
  12. yesterday, susac was activated from the 10-day disabled list and optioned to colorado springs. if he spends at least 20 days optioned this year, he will enter 2018 spring training with one minor league option remaining. susac becomes the first brewer to be activated from the 10-day disabled list.
  13. oliver drake nesting doll giveaway has just been announced for 31 august vs. the washington nationals.
  14. the brewers have lost a degree of flexibility with relievers on the 40-man with their transactions this month. the only relievers currently on the 25-man that can be optioned are two players who have yet to allow an earned run. jacob barnes (2) oliver drake (0) neftali feliz (2, but with service time, able to refuse optional assignment) jared hughes (0) corey knebel (1) jhan marinez (0) tommy milone (0, currently in the starting rotation) carlos torres (0) already optioned, but can be recalled at any point during the season (requires a 10-day minimum stay in the minors unless replacing an injured player): tyler cravy taylor jungmann (is now being stretched out as a starter) brent suter all other optioned pitchers on the 40-man are either starters or recovering from an injury.
  15. david goforth has been designated for assignment. the brewers have 7 days to trade, release or outright goforth to the minor leagues. if the brewers attempt to outright goforth to the minors, any other team could claim him and option him to the minor leagues. if he clears waivers, because he's been outrighted once before, goforth can declare free agency. oliver drake is acquired in a trade with the orioles. he is out of minor league options and has been outrighted to the minor leagues once before. the 40-man remains at capacity.
  16. oliver drake has no minor league options remaining. because he has been outrighted to the minor leagues before, he has the right to declare free agency if the brewers wish to outright him to the minors.
  17. the brewers succeeded in outrighting blazek to the minor leagues.
  18. franklin is out of options. rivera--currently optioned--will burn his final option this year if he spends more than 20 days optioned to the minor leagues. unless you count ryan cordell (who is getting some action at third base), there are no other optioned infielders on the 40-man roster. this is indeed a lack of infield depth.
  19. also of note, brent suter optioned to the minor leagues to make room for goforth. if suter spends at least 19 days optioned in 2017, he will enter spring training with two minor league options remaining. unless recalled to replace an injured player, suter will be required to spend at least ten days optioned to the minors.
  20. damien magnifico designated for assignment today to make room for the addition of david goforth to the 40-man and 25-man roster. the 40-man remains full. the brewers have seven days to trade, release or try to outright magnifico to the minor leagues. if he goes unclaimed, magnifico cannot refuse the minor league assignment. if magnifico is claimed by or traded to another team, he can be optioned to that claiming team's minor league affiliate. goforth has one minor league option remaining, meaning he can go forth to the minor leagues and be recalled again if need be this year.
  21. the brewers must have felt the same as you . . . hence, nick franklin.
  22. taylor jungmann optioned to class aa biloxi to make room for franklin. jungmann will be stretched out as a starter.
  23. taylor jungmann has been optioned to class aa biloxi, where he will be stretched out as a starter.
  24. the club could stick with 13 pitchers for the time being and place keon broxton on the 7-day disabled list to make room for franklin.
  25. michael blazek designated for assignment today to make room for waiver claim nick franklin. the 40-man remains full. the brewers have seven days to trade, release or try to outright blazek to the minor leagues. if he goes unclaimed, blazek cannot refuse the minor league assignment. if blazek is claimed by or traded to another team, he can be optioned to that claiming team's minor league affiliate. franklin is out of minor league options.
