  1. brandon kintzler designated for assignment and thus off the 40-man roster. tyler thornburg optioned and rob wooten recalled. if thornburg spends more than 20 days in the minors this year, he will enter 2016 spring training with no minor league options remaining.
  2. as a fan of herrera, i hope that carlos gomez returns on the 16th day and that logan schafer is optioned.
  3. the club has ten days to trade or release kintzler, or outright him to the minors. because this would the first time he's been outrighted, he cannot refuse the minor league assignment.
  4. brandon kintzler designated for assignment. elian herrera had his contract selected and is back on the 40-man roster. herrera has no minor league options remaining. if the brewers try to send him down again and no other team claims him, he has the right to declare free agency as he has been outrighted before. the 40-man roster remains full.

  6. what the hell are the angels' brass thinking with their comments on hamilton?!?!?!?
  7. for the first time since 2008, no non-roster invitees will break camp with the club.
  8. herrera returned to minor league camp. he likely will not be on the opening day roster.
  9. barring a trade, the opening day bench is set: hector gomez, luis jimenez, martin maldonado, gerardo parra and logan schafer.
  10. i'm thinking that the brewers really want to hang on to logan schafer as a backup outfielder for 2016 and beyond, but that they'll value herrera's bat more in 2015. i don't see them trying to outright schafer to add herrera, though. the 60-day disabled list for jim henderson makes the most sense to open up a roster spot.
  11. any of those are going to look awesome in calligraphy on the line up card.
  12. opt-out clause 1 may and then again 1 june. the brewers could also trade him for $2, but that would insulting to brad mills.
  13. matt clark and jason rogers will enter 2016 spring training each with two minor league options remaining. rob wooten will enter 2016 spring training with one minor league option remaining.
  14. i would love for someone to ask him why a club needs to open the season with five starting pitchers on the roster, instead of just the four needed for the first few days (or even weeks) of the season--especially when the #5 pitcher can be optioned and not have his optioned burned if he spends less than twenty days in the minors.
  15. it was late at night on 31 march 1970 when bud selig learned that he and his investors had acquired the seattle pilots. thanks for making the purchase, mr. selig.
  16. juan centeno optioned. this burns his second minor league option (assuming he stays down for more than twenty days). he will enter 2016 spring training with one minor league option remaining.
  17. he's back in the organization on a minor league contract. probably safe to assume he has an opt-out by june or so if he's not on the 25-man roster.
  18. i hope the brewers option nelson in the coming days. provided he spends less than twenty days in the minors this season, his option will not be burned--but he does have to spend a minimum of ten days in the minors once optioned (unless replacing a player put on the disabled list). it's quite possible that they won't need a fifth starter until 10 april, and likely not until 20 april. open up with fourteen position players and eleven pitchers. the first six games of the season are at home. you want an extra bat or pinch runner if you're playing in the bottom of the ninth--not a starting pitcher who can't contribute anything in the early part of the season.
  19. with indications that the brewers are no longer stretching tyler thornburg out to be a starter, it's pretty obvious that they intend to bring him north as a reliever. that leaves one spot up for grabs between rob wooten and michael blazek, and i'm sensing that the final spot will go to wooten.
  20. i think herrera's fate is tied to chris perez's fate. jim henderson seems a likely candidate for the 60-day disabled list, which opens up one spot. i doubt that the brewers would recall johnny hellweg, pay him a major league salary, let him accrue service time and put him on the 60-day disabled list to open up a second spot. i'm still hoping that the brewers option jimmy nelson before the start the season, have another position player take his place, and recall nelson when it's finally his turn to pitch. a #5 pitcher does not play on opening day, so why have him on the roster?
  21. scooter gennett is expected to start against left handed pitchers in 2015.
  22. the last time the brewers did not open the season with a non-roster invitee making the club? 2008. in every year since, at least one player on a minor league contract has made the opening day roster. chris perez, matt long and elian herrera have to be feeling good about that.
  23. as many predicted, shane peterson and luis sardinas optioned today. the remaining bench candidates (other than parra and maldonado) for three bench spots are: nevin ashley (not on the 40-man), juan centeno, matt clark, hector gomez, elian herrera (not on the 40-man), luis jimenez, matt long (not on 40-man), jason rogers and logan schafer.
  24. luis sardinas and shane peterson optioned today. both can be sent back and forth this season. sardinas will enter 2016 spring training with one minor league option remaining; shane peterson will be out of options.
  25. i really hope herrera finds his way onto the opening day roster. i really liked his bat last year and i like his defensive versatility (even ok with said defense being mediocre in the outfield provided the team has at least a two run lead with only one inning to play. it may be slim chances that the ball is even hit to him in a 9th inning stint.) i'm thinking that the brewers may try to outright luis jimenez and purchase herrera's contract.
