  1. david goforth optioned today. he can be sent up and down this year and will enter 2016 spring training with two options remaining.
  2. adding perez for depth means risking losing depth elsewhere. the 40-man roster is full and it doesn't appear that anyone is a candidate for the 60-day disabled list (unless they recall johnny hellweg, pay him a major league salary, have him accrue major league service time and put him on the 60-day disabled list).
  3. corey knebel and taylor jungmann optioned today. both can be sent up and down this year. knebel will enter 2016 spring training with one minor league option remaining, and jungmann will enter 2016 with two options remaining.
  4. 31 march is when the decision has to be made, but according to reports from tom haudricourt, it doesn't appear that perez can opt out of his contract. according to this report, the brewers just have to let him know by 31 march if they plan to add him to the 40-man roster, or kick in a $100,000 clause if they send him to aaa-colorado springs. the club could choose to release perez and then resign him to a minor league deal to avoid that $100,000 clause. the club could also release him outright, freeing him to sign with any other team. i'll have to do some digging, but perez should be able to opt out because he spent all of 2014 on a major league roster (with the dodgers).
  5. an option is only burned if the player spends more than twenty days in the minor leagues. he has to spend at least ten days in the minor leagues before being recalled (unless replacing an injured player), so if the club wanted nelson as their fifth starter but not until 20 april, they could option him a few days before spring training ends, have him make his final start in a minor league game, and then continue pitching in minor league spring training and make one or two starts for colorado springs. if they want him earlier than 20 april, then the club options him earlier in spring training, and he starts two minor league games.
  6. martin maldonado jonathan lucroy adam lind scooter gennett jean segura aramis ramirez hector gomez matt clark* elian herrera** luis jimenez khris davis carlos gomez ryan braun gerardo parra kyle lohse matt garza wily peralta mike fiers francisco rodriguez jonathan broxton neal cotts will smith jeremy jeffress brandon kintzler rob wooten *has a brief stint with the club and is optioned when jimmy nelson is recalled for his first start **jim henderson is placed on the 60-day disabled list to open up a spot for herrera
  7. yadiel rivera and mike strong optioned to aa-biloxi. both can be recalled this year, and will enter 2016 spring training with two minor league options remaining.
  8. surgery on tuesday. texas has to feel really good about acquiring gallardo now.
  9. mark 'the bird' fidrych would talk to the ball on the mound. ozzie smith doing the backflip. wade boggs eating a tub of fried chicken before every game. damian miller became the first player to hit a walkoff home run in his namesake ballpark. rob deer foul balls that would go back over the roof at county stadium.
  10. he had been borrowing jeff suppan's pillow.
  11. wei-chung wang optioned to class a brevard county today. he will enter 2016 spring training with two minor league options remaining. knowing he was destined to be optioned, he has stated that his goal is to recalled in september of this year.
  12. record: 88 - 73 (rain spoils a game at wrigley field and due to the cubs tanking, the game is necessary) playoffs: advances to the national league division series mvp: ryan braun surprise: ryan braun, carlos gomez, adam lind and aramis ramirez each have 20+ home runs by 30 june disappointment: khris davis struggles mightily all stars: ryan braun, carlos gomez, jonathan lucroy, wily peralta bold prediction: khris davis spends at least three weeks at aaa to work out of a funk; his absence is justified by the surprise power emergence mentioned above
  13. brooks hall has been outrighted to aaa colorado springs. the roster is at 39 for the moment.
  14. Blazek is 4 years younger than Wooten and that's why I think it's 50-50 between the two. wooten can be optioned back and forth in 2015 and 2016. blazek can only be optioned back and forth in 2015.
  15. hector gomez has already been outrighted off the 40-man by the brewers (19 october 2012). if they try to outright him again, he can declare free agency.
  16. that opens up two spots on the 40-man roster (assuming one of gomez or jimenez isn't cut when francisco rodriguez signs).
  17. i was convinced that elian herrera would've become that final bench player. while his defense wasn't outstanding (and shaky in the outfield), i really liked his bat last year. i was convinced that the brewers' bench was going to consist of parra, maldonado, gomez, jimenez and herrera (and a latin cultural attache).
  18. if you became a brewers fan in 2014, don't worry. a bench consists of players who typically don't start the majority of the games, and it's comprised of players who are capable of playing more than one position (lyle overbay pitching doesn't count). two players are locks for the 2015 bench: gerardo parra (all outfield positions) martin maldonado (catcher and first base) two players out of minor league options and likely to make the club (unless the brewers want to give their 40-man spot to a non-roster player): hector gomez (shortstop and third, trying him at second) luis jimenez (third and first, trying him at second) remaining players on the 40-man roster vying to make the club out of spring camp (all can be optioned in 2015) and likely battling for the final spot on a five man bench: juan centeno (catcher) matt clark (first base, trying him at corner outfield positions) shane peterson (all outfield positions and first base) yadiel rivera (shortstop, trying him at second) jason rogers (first and third, trying him at corner outfield positions) luis sardinas (shortstop, trying him at second and third) logan schafer (all outfield positions) centeno's fate lies in how quickly jonathan lucroy can return. clark and rivera are likely optioned (the latter early in camp). if the brewers want a fifth outfielder, it should be one of peterson or schafer. sardinas is good depth to keep optioned in the minor leagues in case of an injury. with parra on such a large contract and free agency looming, and assuming ryan braun's thumb will be 100%, i would not be surprised if the brewers decided to option khris davis for part of the season, making parra the starter and carrying just one backup outfielder and centeno as a third catcher to allow lucroy more time at first. is this likely? probably not. possible? most certainly.
  19. Your post reads as though you are upset that the Brewers have so many quality options in our bullpen. i'm sensing that wooten, henderson and thornburg all spend time optioned to aaa in 2015. with yovani gallardo gone, the bullpen should be used less (he being of late the 100-pitch/six innings guy). thus, the brewers may rethink their stance on long man and consider kintzler or smith to be the long man. granted, a lot depends on how deep into games jimmy nelson can pitch. i like having that experienced depth stashed at aaa. broxton and cotts will be gone after 2015, and henderson and thornburg can step in to replace them.
  20. now hearing $13 million over two years.
  21. the brewers should've put a k-rod entry in the 2015 media guide with perforated pages. had he not resigned, all you had to do was tear out those pages.
  22. if k-rod is indeed signing, i would think that brooks hall would be the guy the club would try to outright.
  23. kintzler, wooten, henderson and thornburg can be optioned. kintzler is less likely to be optioned as he's guaranteed $1.075 million in 2015. it is possible that kintzler's contract has language to pay him a lower salary if optioned to the minor leagues, but i thought that only applied to pre-arbitration players.
  24. it looks like it'll be tough to crack the brewers' bullpen in 2015 if you have minor league options remaining. assuming just seven relievers, the following can be considered locks (if healthy): jonathan broxton neal cotts jeremy jeffress (out of minor league options) will smith (can be optioned but his 2014 performance should guarantee him a 2015 spot) brandon kintzler (can be optioned but being in his arbitration years, not cost effective to stash him in the minors) that leaves two spots up for grabs. tyler thornburg and jim henderson appear to have the inside track, but are coming off of serious injuries and can be optioned. non-roster invitee chris perez is in the mix. thornburg is the leading candidate to be the long guy if needed. they've talked about rob wooten as being the long guy, but how does wooten make the club ahead of thornburg or henderson? if francisco rodriguez signs for 2015, it really leaves one spot up for grabs. likewise if they trade for jonathan papelbon (although one of the above "locks" could be traded for papelbon).
