  1. While it's a possibility, I think the scouts will rate Jordan lower due to his height and make it more likely that he returns for his senior campaign.
  2. I think Gasser will contribute more next year - he's been fantastic so far. Can make the 3, not afraid to take it to the hoop or fight for rebounds and loose balls. I feel pretty darn good about a Taylor/Gasser backcourt with Brust and Rob Wilson off the bench (despite Wilson's inconsistency). Up front they'll have Bruiser and Evans playing tough D and making the occasional shot. Berggren will play quite a bit and has shown flashes of brilliance (key blocks and some nifty post moves). The dark horse is Evan Anderson, and there have been promising reports out of practice. He was mimicking JuJuan Johnson for the scout team and scored 30 points against the 1st team with 4 3-pointers. Ryan's players seem to really start contributing in year #2. Looking for big things from Brust, Anderson and Duje Dukan. (Gasser's a given. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif) Incoming class seems solid. Jarred Uthoff (wing player) has been tearing up the Iowa H.S. scene. We also have Traevon Jackson (Jim Jackson's son) arriving next year....he was not a premier prospect but I'll bet he's the type of hard worker that Bo loves. I don't think that next year's squad will be a top-15 team...but then again, I wasn't sure this Badger team would get there either.
  3. But they don't recruit enough athletic players!!
  4. I'll guess Bob Brainerd. Can't think of anyone else who would generate the negative reaction that YoGo alluded to.
  5. A few tangential notes on "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye": 1)? I always thought that Steam was an African-American music group. 2)? According to Wikipedia, the song was on a list of "lyrically questionable" songs distributed by Clear Chanel to its stations after the 9/11 attacks.? Mind-boggling. 3)? One of my favorite and under-rated baseball traditions is the Chicago White Sox organist playing this tune when the opposing team makes a pitching change, and the fans singing in unison.? Simple but effective, keeps the crowd fired up during a rally.
  6. You actively hate a quarter of the league? Jeez.
  7. I agree with this. Question: If Fielder does sign with the Cubs after this season, do you boo him? I boo the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back. So yes.
  8. A gamer, a fighter, and a hardworker? As long as he's gritty.
  9. As pointed out in the Saito thread, we suddenly have a ton of depth in the bullpen. Wondering if Doug could swing a trade that might land us our coveted SS. Would any team take Parra off our hands at this point (plus a low-level prospect, I imagine)? To me, that's an ideal scenario, as it would allow for a Capuano signing.
  10. Although I think the 13-man staff is excessive, I really hope that they find a spot for Capuano. It would be nice depth to have in case of an injury. I love our top 5, but if one of them gets hurt, we'd turn to Parra (shudder) or Rogers/Rivas. The youngsters can probably handle it, but I'd rather have a battle-tested (copyright Ned Yost) vet like Cappy especially if we are in the thick of a pennant race.
  11. Maybe it's an overreaction to Alcides Escobar's .614 OPS last year and reports of his free-swinging exploits in Winter League, but I was wondering what people thought of making Renteria an offer. It seems like Craig Counsell continues to be this team's plan for backing up SS, and I'm just not sure that he's a good option at this point in his career - the only advantage I see is that he bats lefty. Now, Edgar is no spring chicken either but he is 6 years younger. Bill James projects a .714 OPS next season for Renteria. There's no platoon opportunity, per se, but it would be good insurance if Escobar continues to struggle. I also think that having another Latin player to mentor Escobar (a former All-Star, at that) would be a good idea. According to this article, he was insulted by the Giants' offer of $1M. Doesn't have a ton of interest from other clubs. I'm wondering if a contract similar to the one we signed Counsell to in 2007 (2 yrs/$5M) would be worth offering? Note: obviously, I would want to settle the pitching staff first before extending such an offer, and only if there was enough room left in the budget. ....and I fully expect to get bashed for this idea. Bring it on. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  12. I just read something amazing in his obituary - Feller holds the record for walks in a season, with 208! Can you imagine if a Brewers pitcher did that today? We'd all be brandishing pitchforks outside Miller Park! One of the greatest baseball players and citizens. He'll be missed.
  13. Yup. You could, for example, give Gomez the job by himself like the Brewers did last season. Warning: may induce vomiting. Please avert eyes from television screen while Gomez is in or around the batter's box.
  14. [quote author=HiAndTight wrote: [/b]I'm also curious how you come to the conclusion that Lawrie's value is at it's "Peak"? For a guy who was compared to Rogers Hornsby(which I'm not arguing he's going to be, just that there are those out there who are more than just a little high on him) I find it stunning we can say at 20 years old, "yup, this is his peak value." I find it stunning that someone actually compared Brett Lawrie to Rogers Hornsby.
  15. My initial reaction was: hmm interesting idea....plenty of wiggle room in the budget, we could make a trade like this and then sign a stopgap CF. Then I looked at the current list of available FA centerfielders. It's not a pretty sight. Rick Ankiel Melky Cabrera Jim Edmonds Jody Gerut Tony Gwynn DeWayne Wise I'd rather keep Cain, I think.
  16. Funketown's comment about salary is key. Remember that coming into this offseason, we had a ton of money coming off the books (Suppan, Hall, Hoffman, etc.) and now have added a quality player for about $5M or less. We still have the flexibility to acquire more quality players.
  17. I agree with this. However, they could always approach Marcum about an extension. Now would be the time - buy out the last two arby years and add a couple. Brewers get some cost control, Marcum would still be a FA in his early 30s, which would enable him to get an additional big contract from someone else for his mid-late 30s (assuming health). Yeah, I'm surprised that so many are resigned to the fact that Marcum would only be pitching here for 2 years. A guy who has had TJ surgery and has never earned more than $1M in a season would be very open to the idea of an extension, I'd imagine.
  18. Based on their walk numbers, I'm kind of happy about this.
  19. While I'd prefer it if he threw a more powerful fastball, Marcum's WHIP has been low-to-microscopic in all but one season (2006, his first in the big leagues). Even in the minors, no hiccups to speak of. He's doing something right. The TJ doesn't bother me very much...Liriano seems OK.
  20. This cracked me up. I really don't know what to say about this deal, but maybe Washington would actually be a viable landing spot for Fielder now? This seems like an absolutely horrible contract from Washington. They did offer Teixeira a mega-deal 2 years ago, so obviously the Nats aren't afraid of spending money. And without Dunn, they have a big hole at 1B. I'd want Jordan Zimmerman, but I doubt they would offer him.
  21. If we're picking marginal reasons to downgrade players, I'll say Bagwell doesn't get in because of that ridiculous-looking goatee.
  22. If Joe Morgan is on the committee, Concepcion should have a great shot. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  23. The most amazing stat I've seen is that the median age for a Leno viewer is 59....that's ancient. By comparison, Letterman's is 53 and Conan's is 30 (which is younger than I would have guessed).
  24. Roenicke (as it's pronounced) sounds a bit like Meineke, which is funny because one of their old taglines was "you're not gonna pay a lot, but you'll get a lot." That pretty much sums up this hire....I hope.
  25. I like it. Then again, I also think interleague play should be expanded (i.e. every NL team should play every AL team at least once per season) and that the leagues should use identical rules (all DH or no DH). http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
