  1. When you say, "We need to make a move" twice in the same interivew, I think it's taken as you want different team mates. True, the starting pitching was bad today, but is that the only reason they lost? The Crew scored 2 runs! So, yes, the pitching stinks right now, and yes, the SP should not have to be told that they stink, but it's not like Burns alone lost this game for the Crew.
  2. Inappropriate. It might be "spot on" but it doesn't really help the confidence of the call-ups. I think most everybody knows the SP situation is bad. Does Braunie think that nobody understands that? In the meantime, does he think it will help the temporary SP's? I like his candor, and I've liked it in the past, but this time I don't think it helps.
  3. The Tribe DFA'd Matt Herges. Do we make a move to trade for him? He's got a decent WHIP, owing much to his low walk rate. His HR rate is low too. I'm not sure who the odd man out is then in the bullpen. Narveson has bad numbers so far, but has been OK in his last two outings, and has a decent K rate. Villanueva has been struggling it seems, but I'm not sure if we can option him. He's going to turn it around eventually. What do people think?
  4. Turns out they just DFA'd Ryan Freel.
  5. Where does Pena rank in terms of Mateo and Sano? I have to admit I don't know a lot about the international free agent class. Arangure said via Twitter that really there were about 3 FA to be excited about, and then a huge drop off. Just wondering if Pena is after that drop off.
  6. According to Yahoo! sports this has been completed, but I can't find confirmation of it anywhere. I wonder if this means the Cubs are giving up on Fontenot. With Ramirez slated back, that's two players the Cubs have to remove from the 25 if they plan on using Baker soon.
  7. Lee has an option for next year, so they really both have 1.5 years left.
  8. I realize that the rotation is the rotation, and a sweep would be very valuable mentally to the team, but I wish they could push back Gallardo a day so he could face the Cubs tomorrow.
  9. Why not leave in DiFelice against the righty and then just have the pinch hitter in the pitcher's spot?
  10. Burns's 61 MLB innings pitch do not inspire confidence. If Yo gave up 2 runs in the first inning, you could find easy optimism, but Burns? Prove me wrong Mike!
  11. Quite a few Cubs there. Couldn't recognize one Cardinal name with a quick glance.
  12. I think this is close to what will happen. I think this year's trades will look more like when they traded Carlos Lee for parts that could be used longer term. If we were in on Peavy, and if DM has kicked the tires on Cliff Lee, that's already what he's thinking. That's why I wouldn't be suprised if he did trade for somebody non-sexy like Meche that will annoy a lot of people. It's probably the right thing to do (long term, not necessarily trading for Meche). As the consensus says, we're not a guy or two from being overpoweringly the favorite. It would be a big gamble to give up high prospects for rentals. If we give up prospects, it will be for players we control through 2010, I believe.
  13. I think it would be crazy in terms of spending more by spending too late. In the off season we could have signed Dunn. Granted, we would have lost a pick, but then we would have been able to have dealt Hart for something of value. Though he sucked at the end of last season, that suckitude was a relative anamoly in his career numbers. It was much less of a scratch on the finish than last year's crash with this year's slumps are. So, had we signed Dunn and traded Hart, we'd be up by some close to MLB ready prospect, or a MLB player, and have Dunn. If we trade now, then all we really have is this year's pick, and a hole to address at the end of next season (and I have to admit I don't know if there's somebody waiting in things that could make this a moot point.). But like you said, I don't think it would happen. Not DM's style to give up on a player he likes and who is not flaming out completely, for a pricier option. I like the creative solution for picking up another bat though.
  14. Reading that (two days later) evokes the same feeling you get from running into an ex-girlfriend at the movies with her new boyfriend. She's wearing sweats and has her hair in a pony tail. She's looking cute, but kind of sexy in a transparent sort of way. She just looks as you remember her. Had the Muscle gone 2 for 4 in 5 PA with an HR, 2 walks, and a K that would have been like running into your ex at the movies with her new boyfriend, and for whatever reason she's wearing a nice red dress.
  15. Meche has managed to get 200+ innings for the last two years, and came close three years ago. His WHIP scares me, but it's not as bad as Suppan's. He has a lot more K's than Suppan too. So, in one sense, that's the kind of guy DM would go for: Innings eater, gritty guy who gets men on base, but get out of a lot of jams. He would not be my first choice of course, but given the market, I wonder if he isn't one of the better options in terms of getting something without giving up the farm. The Royals might go for it just for the salary releif. I'd love to get Cliff Lee, but how much would that cost us? I think we all agree that it would be quite a bit (Escobar). That we'd have him the next two seasons means we have another overpriced mediocre pitcher for when Suppan leaves. If we got him, and he proved to be decent, I wonder if Melvin would then try to move Suppan by getting whatever, and eating a bit of salary.
  16. If you like somebody for doing something illegal, you like them for doing something illegal, and the pot use is irrelevant. You could like a person for smoking pot in Milwaukee because it's illegal, but not care about them once they smoke pot in Amsterdam where it is not illegal. If Geo Soto smoked his pot in Amsterdam, would that make you feel better about it brewdude? If you like somebody for smoking pot, you like them for that, not necessarily because it's illegal. And please, let's not turn this into a debate about the drug itself here. With respect Peavy, you have to argue about the drug and its use to argue about Soto doing the drug. I personally hope Geo Soto smokes a lot more pot and often. He'll play a lot worse, and it probably only helps the Brewers.
  17. I will be at the Zambrano/Suppan match up. I'm sure it will suck. Suppan has already made my life miserable in front of Cubs fans once this year. In truth though, you never know what you'll get when these teams get together. It's never as easy as it should be for either team (excluding last July).
  18. If it is BL it's the scene when Jeff Lebowski's landlord is holding his dance cycle at the local theater. Donnie, Jeff, and Walter are talking about where the little Larry kid lives. That sounds very familiar. I knew it was a sympathetic character going to see somebody like his landlord or something. Time to watch the Big Lebowski again. Thanks for the clarification Homer, and thanks for figuring it out Beerambassador and BKBucky.
  19. I don't think so. What scene in the Big Lebowski would that be?
  20. I haven't seen Uncle Buck in ages, but I don't think it is. I remember it being some side character telling one of the main characters that they're doing an interpretative dance recital or something, and then later in the movie you see it.
  21. OK, I'm glad somebody started this thread, because I've been dying trying to figure this out: There are two clips they play at Miller Park for the "Show us your bad dancing" bit. One is from "Napoleon Dynamite", and then there's the other, and I can't place it. It's clip of a heavier guy, dressed in garlands and branches, doing this weird, choppy, interpretative dance routine. I've seen the film, or at least part of it, that it's in, but I can't place it. Anybody know?
  22. I'm aware of this, but the team losing the type B player still gets a compensation pick, which pushes all later picks back a slot, so it does matter in terms of comparative advantageWhile it's true that teams do get their pick pushed back a slot, it's not enough of a disincentive to not sign a type B. 29 of 30 teams get pushed back a slot so you're talking about missing out on one player. It only makes sense to pass on that type B if you think the pickin's for the sandwich round and rounds 2+ are going to be that competitive AND you think that all other teams will also pass on that player. If a team is worried about dropping a slot and the team losing the FA gaining a pick, the player in question is probably not worth a look in the first place.
  23. So, are you saying that if we played it close to the deadline, we might even be able to unload Suppan? Oh, sweet deliverance! I know DM would never do it. But a guy can dream. (I also know that as frustrating as he can be, lately he's one of our more stable options.)
  24. They way I figure it: If it weren't for emotional investment, this game would be almost pointless. Why do we follow the team year after year with just slivers of hope? Because we all want that glorious moment in October when we see our team crowned champions. And that's only fun if you have to do battle against nefarious enemies. The Cubs are easy to hate because they're close, we see the obnoxiousness of their fans more than the obnoxiousness of other fans, and they are big market whiners, and that doesn't sit well Brewer fans who are all too well aware of the pitfalls of the small market model. But divisional rivalries aside, there are other symbols of the struggles of a team like the Brewers: big market teams that can influence our game more than we can influence theirs. Money talks, and traditionally, the Yankees haven't been eloquent with that talking money. Besides, the Yankees are one of three teams to beat the Brewers in the post-season. But perhaps it doesn't make sense to you because you really ARE a Jedi, and you have mastered your emotions. Well done. Please go offer your tutelage to Manny Parra. There rumors on this board that he's a headcase.
  25. To an extent, I feel like this debate boils down to a philosophical question about which small market model is better: Twins vs. Marlins. If we're the Twins, we hold out hope this year and next and keep ourselves consistently strong, knowing that some years we'll dip, and other years we'll rise a little. If we're the Marlins, we sell and rebuild and hope that the rebuilding is good enough to make a WS. It has worked for the Marlins twice, but isn't working now so much. Mind you, they haven't gone out and hired a few FA's to fill some holes, but I'm guessing it's because they know they're more than a few FA's away. We have glaring holes on this team, and we have a lot of talent. If things go as planned for every team, the Cubs beat us to the title, as well as the Cardinals. But things rarely go as planned, so why not take a chance? Even if the general management decided we were better suited for the Marlins model, I don't know if right now is the time to do it. What 7/31 holds though is anybody's guess. I guess what I would hope for is that Doug Melvin could do something creative that might give us a chance this year, but strengthens us for the future. I'm not saying I'm a proponent of the Bucholz for Hardy idea (and we don't even know if that's possible), but a move like that may give us a boost for this year while investing in the future.
