  1. So if CC had signed with the Cubs you would you hate CC? Or at least harbor some animosity? If so, it's not arbitrary.
  2. If we had an Astros level farm system that needed to be re-stocked, I'd think that JohnBrigg's proposal would not be out of the question IF the Brewers were 6 or more games out in the last week of July. But it's not like we're desperate for the mid-level prospects that Hoffman and Cameron might get. Besides, how in demand are Cameron and Hoffman really going to be? I think we'd get far less than would be worth it to jettison components of a competitive, yet flawed, team. If I turn it around and think of who we could get and think, if we already had such prospects that are equal in an exchange for Cam or Hoffman, would I be willing to trade for them for a decent closer and OF to have a shot in the division? Yes I would.
  3. I'm gathering there is some consensus here: people would like the Yankees to suffer for their over-spending, but for the most part, people wish CC well. Since baseball is ruled by a lot of superstition, I'd be happy with: CC has great production in his career, including with the Yankees. However, with his 3.00 ERA and awesome K rate comes no run support, leaving him about as many wins as Yankee as Carl Pavano. If CC ever becomes a Cub, all bets are off.
  4. I agree with John Briggs. If they're not going to use him, they should put him somewhere where he'll develop. If they want to use him in the big club and let him grow, that's fine, but he's not a utility prospect, he's a stud prospect.
  5. What do you mean by "hard slotting" exactly, and how would the good outweigh the bad for small market teams with this in place? Being able to trade draft picks for players is intriguing, but I wonder how it affects the trade market. For example, would having no compensation picks for CC have given DM pause in trading for him? Or does it simply mean you trade fewer prospects? Even if that were the case, the appeal of the compsensation picks is that you get another high round draft pick to compensate (in the CC example) to partially make up for the loss of the highly ranked prospect. Also, I don't think draft picks in baseball would have the same weight as football draft picks. It seems (I have no stats to back this up right now) that a higher percentage of football draft picks contribute to their clubs than baseball draft picks ever do. With baseball, it seems advantageous to pick a heap of talent form the draft and see what sticks.
  6. The next collective bargaining agreement came up in another thread about foreign born players. I hadn't thought much about the implications of the next CBA, so I thought I might open a new thread to ask questions and get a discussion going. I'm wondering: 1) Based on what people know, what are the chances that type A and B comp picks are eliminated from the draft? 2) If the above happens, what are the implications for the Crew? It seems to me that the loss of those compensation picks can kind of screw smaller market clubs in a way. Otherwise you basically have to trade Prince Fielder in his final year of control. What happens if a player only signs a contract to buy out arbitration/first year of FA if he can have a no trade clause? Then a team like the Crew is really hamstrung. I can see on one level how it would also work against teams like Boston and New York who might have more type A's hitting the market though. 3) What other changes are possibily slated for the next CBA?
  7. Why does it follow that if players drafted get a slot amount, that they'd have to get rid of types A and B free agents? What am I missing here?
  8. Witardo has pretty good grammar, and some baseball talk speed, but I think he'll level out as a AAAA-blogger type. I don't know if ESPN has a need for him. And they don't have anybody to fit JS needs; The Journal-Sentinel doesn't report on the Yankees and Red Sox, generally speaking.
  9. What will you do if the Crew trades him to the Cubs for Ruben Quevedo, Jr.?
  10. And he's being replaced by former Brewer Von Joshua!
  11. I'm starting to well up with Brewer pride with all these ex-Brewers giving us insight into their time with the game. First Brooks, and now this! Many thanks to the site for the added dimension of Brewer konwledge and insight. Great work Todd.
  12. In lieu of news, I'll offer speculation: People on this thread were noticing that certain players weren't used today, and speculated it was because of an impending trade. Hoffman has not pitched in FOUR DAYS! Melving has been looking to trade him since Saturday's win over the Braves.
  13. I'm not against trading Parra necessarily, but Parra for 1/2 season rental of Bedard is steep. We'd be selling low on Parra, who is young, and capable of doing better than what he's doing now. It would be a strange time to deal him in terms of established Doug Melvin behavior, since he doesn't usually sell low unless he's buying low at the same time.
  14. I'm not sure how I'd feel about Parra for Bedard. Obviously at the moment Bedard>Parra, but Parra, though very frustrating at the moment, has good potential. In any event, his potential is more certain than the potential we get for two draft picks if we dont' re-sign Bedard. I don't Bedard makes us a lock for anything either. He makes us better probably, but not for certain.
  15. That is a cool optical illusion link, but I don't completely get the logic in the article. According to the article, it appears that it's going down and then breaks away, confusing the hitter. On the optical illusion though, it demonstrates that this happens when you stop looking at it straight, and then see it from your peripheral vision. Why would you be looking straight at the ball, and then only see it out of your peripheral vision? I know the researcher mentioned (Arthur Shapiro) says that it "overlaps with the peripheral vision" as the ball gets nearer, but that doesn't seem intuitive to me. As it got closer, wouldn't be more in your direct center vision? Haven't gone out to have one thrown at me, so I'm turning my head and picturing it, which is probably not a productive excercise (and is getting me some stares at work). In any case, cool links. Thanks for sharing.
  16. I have a hard time believing that the Nationals have that much area.
  17. Why are they keeping Smith up if he hasn't even shown he can pitch in the majors? At least Burns had a decent outing. I don't understand the logic of this. Anybody have any insights?
  18. St. Louis is OK. Fans are OK, I don't dig on the new stadium that much, but that's just me. Don't remember any must-eat places to eat. For US Cellular: Transportation is simple. If you go via the subway, take the red line south toward 95/Dan Ryan, and get off at Sox/35th. You're within a block of the stadium. Or you can get on the green line on the EL and get off at IIT/35 and you're within about 4 blocks of the stadium. Red line is more populated. So, less of a crowd with the green line to the game. After dark though I don't mind sticking with the red line because the EL can be a bit dodgy at night and the numbers offer safety. Places to eat: so many! You could stop at China Town on your way down. It's a stop away on the red line at the Cermak stop. But around your hotel there are tons of places. You could amble up toward Water Tower place and near that area are some of the more popular Chicago Style pizza restaurants. Or you could venture west of the loop and go to Greek town. But north of Water Tower and in and around there you can find plenty to satisfy you. The food at US Cellular is pretty good though. I usually sit in the bleachers because they're cheaper compared to everything else, and they're so close to good concessions. You do get the biggest meatheads sitting by you though. Avoid the upper deck though because it's dizzying and just not a good place to watch a game from IMO.
  19. But may need to work the next couple. Also while I don't agree with only using him in save situations he is 41 so why use any mileage if you can avoid it. Remember how Torres wore down last year? Gotcha. I turned it on late, and I feared that maybe he was injured or something. Conserving him is great. Cubs won. Darn. Though I'm glad to see the Reds lose steam, I fear the Cubs gaining steam.
  20. So why not Hoffman in the 9th? He hasn't worked a lot recently.
  21. I hope he makes so much money with that clothing line that his MLB salary is like pocket change to him, and he signs and extension with the Crew just because he loves being a Brewer so much.
  22. In the last couple of weeks we've gotten to see Jay Bruce and Colby Rasmus play against the Crew. These guys are probably going to prove to be a thorn in the side of the Crew for years to come. The scary thing is that the their teams are probably going to be good for a while too. Also, I don't know why Cubs fans were bemoaning having to rely on Randy Wells for a while. He's been great for the Cubs in the last few starts. Is he just getting lucky or is he going to bolster the Cubs lineup for years to come? I was feeling a bit jealous tonight that this fill-in guy was doing great for the Cubs while one of our pitchers of the future was handing out runs to the Marlins. Who else do think the Crew has to worry about from divisional rivals in the next few years?
  23. Fair point, but since Tom H is the "beat writer" for the Brewers, I don't think he should get to hide as much behind the blog excuse as much as a true blogger does. If he wants to, that's fine, but then I think the complaints that he's "unprofessional" are fair game.
  24. He used a perfectly acceptable and accurate tense. He used present tense, which is allowed for things that have occurred in the past and continue to the present. There's nothing misleading about it.You can argue that what TH is saying , tensewise, is accurate, but it is vague. If you put something in the simple present, it comes across as a habitual action. Furthermore if you're using past actions as the semantic basis for your present tense construction, you are pretty much saying that the past actions are indicators for actions to come. If you say, "I go to Brewers games", it means you regularly go to games, and that is is reasonable to expect that you will go at some point in the future. As a sports journalist, Tom H should stick to facts. Swindle has given up runs every time he's been up. That's what might discourage management from calling him up. Not that he is always expected to give up runs by management. If Tom H knows that is the reason as a fact, then that is what he should report. I hope that DiFelice is hurt that they don't rush him back. I don't know what the future holds in terms of getting starting pitching, and if we'll procure a pitcher who can lessen the workload for the bullpen. The last thing I want is a BP meltown from nagging injuries come September. I do wonder if Swindle will get another chance in the big league club. He's doing so well at AAA, that I have to believe he has some value at the big league level. I hope so anyway.
