  1. I thought he mentioned they were buried on Jakku. But... if Rey was “sold” why was she not enslaved?
  2. Spoilers ahead (remember we have the spoiler feature available to us).
  3. Sunday promotions are aimed at making the entire experience a fun one for families. Getting families in the park is essential for creating new fans. That's the lifeblood of a franchise. Why anyone would have a problem with that is beyond me. Families come other days of the week, as well. My family comes weeknights (early starts 6:40). Why anyone would have a problem with putting a few more promotions for families on other days is beyond me. Families with grade school & younger children are not taking their families out to an evening game in anywhere near the same proportion that they will go to an afternoon game. Maybe they'll add more promotions to other nights, but they certainly won't reduce what's being offered on Sundays. As was already pointed out, the lifeblood of a team is drawing fans - and you have to start cultivating that interest at a young age so the whole idea is to make sure those kids have a blast on Sundays, and are much less interested in schedule flexibility for older fans. Is the root of your gripe that you'd like to go to more games on Sundays but they've become too crowded for your liking, or that you'd like to avoid Sundays but can't because you want the promotional item?
  4. I had not heard this deal was coming, but I'm much more interested if this means the X-Men can be incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
  5. I'm well aware of that. I still would have thought the return would be comparable, if not better that what Detroit got for trading away a, at the time, 34 yr old pitcher who was owed around $85 million in Verlander. 3 years for a pretty good pitcher is a risk, but won't cripple your franchise. They also didn't take on all $85 million, which is why they gave up some prospects. Verlander's likely was only $56 million (and I think they got $16 back from Detroit making it $40). I think the final year only vests if Verlander is a top 5 Cy Young candidate, which is possible, but he'll be quite a bit older then and he seems to really sandbag half of the regular season these days. If Stanton's play declines over the next 3 years, they'll still have 8 years left to pay him. Much, much bigger risk. Exactly. Miami essentially killed Stanton's trade value (and arguably diminished the franchise value at the time of sale) by giving him that long of an extension coupled with a full no-trade clause.
  6. Scratch the Phillies off the list:
  7. He's going to be non-tendered since his production isn't worth the estimated $5.7M he's slated for in arbitration. Not worth trading for unless you think he can rebound into a useful #5 starter with a 4.00 ERA, but absolutely worth going after once he's non-tendered on more team-friendly terms.
  8. I'm not sure that the Dodgers want to assume that much payroll. They can, but I think they are trying to stay under the luxury tax threshold.
  9. The Giants have reportedly already said they'd take on the full contract, plus trade them Panik, Shaw & Beede. That's by far the best deal that's (rumored to be) out there. But Stanton might not see the Giants as competitive and wants to play for the Dodgers. The no-trade clause (might be the first time Miami actually allowed that for one of their players) is obviously going to draw this process out. If they end up at a standstill, you could see the Marlins dump payroll all around Stanton (or at least threaten to to get him to bend).
  10. That seems...excessive. Sounds like the lifetime ban was prompted by the fact Coppolella has threatened litigation and would not cooperate with the investigation.
  11. I remember how genuinely excited Doug Melvin was during his first interview after the Dan Kolb/Capellan trade. He said they were targeting a few mid-tier prospects back for Kolb, and the GM of the Braves said "why not just take the cream of the crop?"
  12. I seem to recall Salome being suspended for an ADHD drug (Adderall, I think) due to not having the required paperwork filed (similar to Mike Cameron suspension). And things started to unwind quickly after that.
  13. It's frustrating to miss out of the playoffs by the thinnest of margins. But, there was probably less than a 5% chance anyone here thought we'd be in this position anyways. There's likely to be the same two camps of people on this outcome. Those that are encouraged by the progress of the rebuild and thankful we didn't part with really anything in terms of legitimate prospects (and equally happy that our surprise success forced the Cubs to deplete their farm), and those that are outraged we didn't push the chips in and go for the big splash to maybe add a few more wins.
  14. Don't know if it's been brought up yet, but it's common for teams that play good travelling fan-bases (like Green Bay) to require extra ticket purchases. The Vikings used to require that if any non-season ticket holder wanted to purchase the Green Bay game, they were required to also purchase a ticket to a preseason game. So really the only way you curb this would be to not allow the selling of single-game tickets for these games, and bundle them as part of various ticket packages. Cubs fans would be required to exclusively hunt on the secondary market or eat the price of the other tickets with a package.
  15. Too short of notice to fully staff concessions & other workers.
  16. 6 million people in Florida are without power. My friend that lives down there said that they are being advised to not shower or flush toilets if possible because sewer backups are a real threat. And transformers are "popping like fireworks."
  17. There's a chance that this Seattle defense is the toughest challenge our offense will face during the regular season. Couple that with the fact it usually takes a game or two for the offense to find its identity, and it bodes well for the remainder of the season. On the other side of the ball, I have tempered enthusiasm. I *hope* our defense has improved (and it's not just Seattle's offense that stinks). Next week will be the big challenge. Defending NFC Champions opening a new stadium. The Atlanta offense is much better than Seattle's. But that Atlanta defense, as good as they may be, is nowhere near the level of Seattle. I would have been OK going 1-1 in the first 2 games with both of those teams being Super Bowl contenders, so it's nice to get one under our belt right away. Going 2-0 gives us a huge advantage in terms of determining home field advantage with the head-to-head tie breakers. Atlanta going 2-0 essentially gives them a 2 game lead on us in that scenario.
  18. I actually like the duo, but they were terrible today. I don't agree that he(Lane) deserved an ejection, but they kept harping on that as if it impacted the game. And Rodgers DID get blocked in the back and it was obvious. Not sure how they and Mike Periera thought that shouldn't have been called. They refs weren't great today. They did blow that call on Adams, but they also blew that call on Brice who was all over Graham in the endzone on 3rd down and there were multiple plays they could have called holding on Seattle's OL. But they just kept going on and on about the calls that went against Seattle. That one was close, but if you watch the replay Graham tried something very vet-savvy. Rather than put his arms up for the ball, he wrapped his arms around the back of Brice's helmet and actually pulled him into his body, trying to draw the PI flag. I had to watch the replay a couple of times before I noticed what Graham was trying to do. From that perspective, it's a good non-call.
  19. First, anyone who uses the term "utility man" to describe Scooter Gennett completely loses me on any argument they wish to make. Secondly, if the Brewers had any inkling the first-half 2017 Gennett was who he really is, you must also consider the other move that was made to make Gennett expendable: the acquisition of Travis Shaw. Figuring on Gennett as your 2B perhaps would have forced them to consider Villar as the regular 3B against RHP (with Villar shifting to 2B and Perez to 3B against LHP). Because based on their recent histories to that point, there is just no logical reason for not having Villar starting at a position and Gennett had no value as a utility bench player due to his extreme defensive limitations.
  20. Sort of a weird move for the Phillies. 600K for a month when they're not going anywhere this year anyway But yeah, at least he's not going to a different contender. Not sure if it was brought up elsewhere, but the Cards acquired Nicasio from the Phillies for a prospect. So the Pirates dumped him for $600k in salary relief BEFORE the waiver trade deadline for playoff eligibility, and the Phillies pay him for a week and parlay him into a prospect. He won't be eligible for the Cardinals' playoff roster, but he will certainly assist in getting them there.
  21. Dial would add some rotational depth. He's only 27, but wasn't a scheme fit in SF as they move from a 3-4 to a Seahawk's inspired 4-3. 6'5" 320lb is prototypical size for a 3-4 DE (although we've tended to go with shorter/stouter guys during Caper's tenure). I think they probably wanted to keep Geoff Gray. Great size and athleticism but a project. He just ended up taking the NY Jets offer instead.
  22. McCaffrey ended up on the Saint's practice squad. Yancey & Clark are both on the GB practice squad I believe. Tom Silverstein had tweeted at Dupre was looking at other options (not sure if GB had offered and he declined, or if they moved on) and as of now Dupre isn't on anyone's practice squad. Quite the fall for Dupre. Once talked about as a potential first round pick, decided to declare a year early and fell to the 7th round and now isn't even on a practice squad.
  23. I think if there is any perceived skill that a player could diminish in, "pitch framing" would have to be the least likely. You don't just wake up one day and forget how to do that. For Lucroy to have fallen off that badly makes it seem like once that stat was known (essentially, how many times had he made the umpires look foolish), perhaps the umpires became keenly aware of this (and Lucroy specifically), and it has worked against him ever since. Just a theory as it pertains to Lucroy & pitch framing.
  24. If he was first-team All Pro he would have a plus by that year: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/S/SittJo20.htm Show me links to the press releases naming him All-Pro and I'll believe you. I did the research. Josh Sitton has never been named 1st team AP All-Pro. He was named 2nd team three times (2013-2015). For what it's worth, Jahri Evans has been named 1st team AP All-Pro four times (2009-2013) while TJ Lang has never been named 1st or 2nd team AP All-Pro.
  25. "Packer People" is quickly moving into the territory of "The Cardinal Way" and I don't like that one bit. After watching the preseason, I think an argument could be made that the player who will help the defense out the most this season is P Justin Vogel. He's shown an ability to flip field position and 5 second + hangtimes becoming the norm. I just hope his skills don't diminish once the temperatures drops. But he looks like a keeper.
