  1. Would it make sense to get an absentee ballot and help him that way? Yeah -- I'd do this. In Oregon all the votes are done through the mail -- and in Oregon they will have a number of measures that are written in a less than straightforward manner, and my mom will have to work through them with my dad, who doesn't have the patience to get through the whole proposition. I don't think there is any question that your brother should be able to vote -- I think the only moral dilemma is you will need to make sure you don't lead him in a direction that is more yours than his -- like my mom does with my dad. He ends up voting a lot different than his actual politics....
  2. Neither are the 2008 Rays, hence the example. I actually thought it was a pretty accurate comparison. Really? -- I think the gap between the Brewers/Reds is much smaller than the RedSox/Rays. I have a hard time seeing how the comparison works.
  3. The chump left a legit contender to go to a team that is NOT the same caliber as the Brewers for $4M more before the Brewers were able to match the offer. $4M is a chuck of money. I don't think it is clear that the Reds are not the same caliber as the Brewers -- They have a pretty solid group of youngsters that could put together a pretty filthy rotation. What makes this even worse is the fact that he said he liked being a Brewer and wanted to be one......LIAR! I think he liked being a Brewer, and I think it is as simple as the Reds offered him more money. This would be like if Ortiz left the Red Sox (one of the best at his particular position) to go to this year's Tampa squad. No it is not. The Brewers are not a 96 win team, and the Reds are not a 66 win team. nor will they be until they unload some of their terrible contracts. What terrible contracts do they have? -- Griffy who hit 30 bombs and had a .372 OBP made $8.5M -- Dunn who had 40 jacks and a .382 OBP made $10M We paid Jenks+Mench about what we paid Dunn last year. The Reds have some good reason for optimism -- if Cordero is closing for a Harang, Cueto, Bailey, Vozquez, Arroyo rotation -- and those pitchers develop -- he will rack up some save opportunities.
  4. I don't have a problem with the fact that he left for 4 extra million. I have a problem with the fact that he didn't even give Melvin a chance to make a counter-offer, or even tell Melvin what his offer from the Reds was. Doesn't seem he really was invested in staying here. It's the nature of things -- Vargas and Wise got released -- If we think that is OK, then we have to expect that players are always going to look out for their best interest, just as selfishly as the Brewers look out for their interest. The way I look at it, while Cordero was here -- he was probably our best pitcher for those 1.5 seasons (including Sheets), he never griped or squawked, always took the ball, and without a doubt contributed in a large way to our team's progress. The Brewers got back every dime they put into him. As a player, I hope he does well for the Reds -- just like I hope Overbay turns it around for Toronto, (Estrada not so much)...
  5. Or maybe he prefers to wait for another job. I think that is the case. IU is a mess, and as long as Bennett keeps the Cougars in the top part of the Pac10 it's not as if his stock will drop any.
  6. I give you love baby not romance. Nenah's brother was that "Save Tonight" dude
  7. Wait until Jenkins comes back...
  8. He'll get booed pretty loud. I'm hoping he doesn't get the call, that would be a great sign.
  9. When your done do you want to come take my stupid white rocks? No. What are you going to do with your stupid white rocks? I put some in the neighbor's rock gardens, and the rest I dumped behind my stupid shed. I hate white rocks. What were people thinking?!? Dynamite, duh! Yeah, generally I fully endorse the use of explosives and I am never apologetic about over-engineering a situation -- but I am pretty positive, if I use dynamite, when the smoke clears, there will just be more stupid white rocks everywhere.
  10. I have 3 stupid shrubs in front of our house in a stupid white rock garden. I hate the stupid shrubs and the stupid white rocks. I butchered the stupid shrubs down to the "trunk" and removed 40 billion stupid white rocks from the garden via the wheelbarrow. I tried to dig the stupid shrub "trunks" out of the rock garden -- however there are even more stupid white rocks under the dirt that make it impossible to use a spade or pickax. I removed so many stupid white rocks, I am now below the floor of the ground level of the house. What I want to do is remove the stupid shrub remnants and pour some dirt and woodchips in and plant whatever stupid thing my wife wants me to put there. What would be the best way to remove the existing (stupid) shrubs if I can not dig around them?
  11. I think realistically Carpenter could return August/Sep.
  12. The one thing about the Cardinals -- if they are in the race, they are not going to hesitate to acquire what they need, unlike a Pittsburgh perhaps. If the Cardinals end up being a .500 team, and the Reds keep winning, the NL Central will be a blast -- and I certainly would not mind that at all. EDIT: If Cueto and Volquez continue to perform like they have, and with BP pitchers Mike Lincoln and J. Affeldt and of course Cordero -- I'm primarily concerned about the Reds. Cueto struck out 10 in 7IP and Volquez K'd 8 in 5. ruh roh. At some point Jay Bruce enters the fray as well, and they still have 2 decent arms in Bailey and Maloney in AAA. ruh roh.
  13. I assume that the pitcher and catcher go over the lineup with a coach before the game starts so both the pitcher and the catcher have an idea how they are going to pitch each batter before the game starts. I suspect if there is a fielding alignment that is not traditional the manager will tell the pitcher to pitch to the teeth of the defenders through the catcher. I think the game has trended towards more control coming from the dugout, and there are probably managers that would love to call every single pitch. Either way there is no doubt in my mind that a guy like Kendall who has been exposed to professional baseball his entire life, has a few tricks up his sleeve that a young AAA player does not.
  14. Regarding Suppan, I don't think he's completely untradeable. I don't either -- However, I think as a group we tend to handwave DM through trade scenarios. Capuano, Bush, Vargas, Cordero, and the list goes on of players that we thought that DM should have traded, and of course weren't. Liquidating Suppan, is not going to be easy.
  15. FTJ, I think he has to pick 8 cities by some point as opposed to blocking trades, Right -- But Suppan has some leverage -- that's all I am saying.
  16. The Doorman is probably getting nervous about losing airtime to Jasper.
  17. FtJ, are you still feeling comfortable with your comparison of Kendall to Counsell? Yep. From 2004-06 Kendall's OBP was higher than his SLG -- that's Counsellesque. I think at the end of the year they will be closer than further apart Although Kendall's OPS is 1.350 while Counsell's is 1.100
  18. Or the Brewers were to eat $2 mil. of his salary -- totally plausible. Sure -- I just dont think Suppan is the type of pitcher teams are going to trip over to get. I just think if the path to keeping Sheets is liquidating Suppan, that may be hard to do.
  19. The biggest different I've noticed is that there is no nibbling this year Vargas got DFA'd
  20. Suppan's disappearing no-trade-clause after '08 says, "Right back at ya." As others have pointed out, he still can block a trade -- plus with his mediocrity and huge salary bump in 09 I think he is pretty untradeable. About the only way (realistically) I think Suppan could be traded would be if he were packaged with someone like Weeks or Hardy.
  21. If the brewers take care of business it really shouldn't matter.
  22. I guess I'm not sold on Sheets being gone yet. Jeff Suppan says Hi. Why not take the money Sheets is already making and Gagne's money and pay him 15 millionish a year? Gagne's money will need to be spent on another closer in all likelihood.
  23. Of course there is nothing more fantastic that the "must sweep" series -- but we should be in a good place to win today and complete the sweep.
