  1. I'm not sure the rule for waiver trades, but there is no way that he went through waivers without being closed, therefore the trade must be to whomever claimed him correct? Correct. Because both are premium defensive players Yet he got sent down to AAA. I understand that some team will take a flyer on JJ, assuming he is "likely to hit again" -- however, we are more than likely to get a "likely to pitch again" guy -- not rotation help.
  2. I would put money on him hitting better than Hardy has hit this year. I am not picking on you ---- but how can we expect Escobar to outhit JJ on one hand, and then on the other hand pretend that JJ has any real trade value (i.e., to net us pitching).
  3. How long would Hardy need to stay down in order to earn the extra year before FA? If it's only a short time needed, and that's the reason for this move, then I will agree I jumped the gun on what may be a shrewd move. At least 20 days -- If JJ is down for under 20 days, he gets credit for the whole season.
  4. The team was sucking, and everyone was screaming for changes to happen. I don't think anyone was screaming for: 1.) Castro to be fired 2.) Hardy to be optioned to AAA 3.) Bourgeois to be called up. DFAing Hall probably was screamed for.
  5. Unless of course Melvin is now fixing his mistake. Hardy to AAA for one month buying a year of service time. The problem with this line of thinking though, is that from a trade standpoint -- If JJ spends the rest of the year in AAA, why would a team be that concerned about getting a second year of JJ? At this point, JJ is not going to get a big payday after his arby years -- 1 to 2 years could be a total non-issue. Also consider: If a player is sent to the minor leagues on optional assignment for a total of 20 days or less during a season, he receives service time for the entire season.
  6. Everybody is calling for Melvin's head, but how do we know Mark A. isn't calling the shots here? I absolutely believe MA is calling the shots here -- this does not seem like DM's M.O. here. I believe at some point MA is going to be sick of having to make changes to his team, and find a new GM.
  7. Are we going to be on the hook for Hall's contract next year? Next year, and the following year as well -- at the minimum the buyout option -- I am not 100% clear how that works.
  8. How is designating Hall for assignment desperate? I think the poster meant the overall flury of head-chopping today -- not so much this unique transaction. This should have happened a long time ago....
  9. Service time is a total non-issue here. Escobar isn't going to earn any super-two status by being called up in mid-August. And he'll need six full years of service time for free agency, and he was going to be the Opening Day shortstop next year regardless. Thanks for correcting me. I hope Macha plays him then. He said Hardy is being sent down for paperwork reasons so Escobar can start tonight. Hardy would have had to be claimed on waivers -- but at least this makes some degree of sense.
  10. Are you telling me he'd have been canned had he kept his job as the bullpen coach??? No, I was telling you that saying Castro should have been "content as the BP coach" was unreasonable. Castro had as much to do with the success and failures of our pitchers over his tenure than any of the pitching coaches. My point isn't that he was horrible as a pitching coach and deserved to go. But the staff struggled mightily, so the guy with no track record as a pitching coach now will not be able to coach in his beloved Milwaukee. Ok. Fair enough, I better understand your position.
  11. Players at AAA still have to clear waivers to be traded, right? Specially if they were on the ML Roster? Yes. I see nothing wrong with this. The Brewers are not going anywhere this year anyway. Why burn up Escobar's service time? Not only is it an overreaction, it will undoubtedly hurt Hardy's trade value. Yes. This does nothing good for us overall.
  12. Can't blame him for wanting to move up the ladder, but it's a lesson for those in life that can't find contentment and always want the bigger and better deal. ???? This is not a reasonable statement. Castro is not to blame for our bad pitching. I wonder if this stuff is Mark A. or Melvin. Either way it's bad. I agree. This is the beginning of the end of Melvin. EDIT: This reminds me of the Yost firing -- I don't think DM fires a pitching coach at this point in the season -- I think Mark A. did this. I really think this is the end of DM.
  13. You have got to be kidding me.
  14. How can this board be unanimous on this subject, while the team leaders (Macha/Melvin) still turn a blind eye? I am beginning to think Macha and Melvin are dipwads. Honestly though, I think the Brewers in 2009 are toast. I don't think Rivera is a substantial upgrade either (but I do think he should get more PT.), so why waste service time for Salome and LuCroy while we are hoping to win 80 games? Maybe if we keep playing Kendall he will finally break, and then not be a temptation for 2010.
  15. Not because I think our starters are as bad as they have pitched this year but because I didn't account for the complete lack of depth properly. In your defense, the lack of depth really has been driven home in a major way this season. I know I was concerned about it, but I didn't see it getting this out of hand. If we had some decent AAA arms I think the team is still doing fine but the complete lack of depth has just killed us. Agreed -- and that is exactly what makes me nervous about 2010. If we had a couple of AAA studs we threw into the rotation this year, even if they struggled in 2009, you could still point to/hope for improvements in 2010. How can you say that when Braun and Hart are both starting OFs and products of the Brewers system? TGJ and Nelson Cruz are also starters as well.
  16. If they win 3 in a row that tune will change quickly. My tune will become "About damn time"
  17. although I suspect FTJ and myself may have... I would have predicted 63 wins probably http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I seem to recall that there were a substantial amount of "doubters" of the pitching staff -- and that unbridled optimism was held in check for the most part.
  18. The saddest part is, the Brewers aren't even close to passing the next team upward on the ERA list. We have a 5.70 ERA since the AS break -- If that continues we will have a hard time reaching 80 wins. and probably not next year either barring an unforseen DRAMATIC improvement of the rotation. I agree, I don't feel that we have reasonable playoff aspirations at this point in 2010 either.
  19. do you send an extra addressed envelope for return with the postage on it? ALWAYS do this. should i send to multiple players on the same team in the same envelope? NEVER do this. does writing a letter to go along with the pic help? ALWAYS Do this.
  20. Thanks for weighing in Gene Shalit. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. The thing I have noticed about Culver's curds -- is sometimes they are white cheese, and sometimes they are orange cheese.
  22. If the Brewers come back, it will be because their pitching isn't 15th out of 16th. In 2007 The Rockies had the best (among the best) pitching in the NL after the AS break. I think you are saying that if the Brewers end up in the playoffs, it will be because the Brewers pitching reversed their fortunes -- and I would certainly agree with that. Bush should be back within 2 weeks, Suppan will hopefully come back relatively soon Frankly, I think 2 weeks is too long -- I think we are circling the ponies, ala Little BigHorn, the Calvary probably should get their bugle going soon. While Suppan is maybe better than the replacement pitchers when he comes back, in 2 weeks, Suppan would be like sending F-Troop to help Custer.
  23. I really like this move -- really shrewd. I think until we know who the PTBNL is, it's hard to call it shrewd. The Brewers are hardly in the thick of it. But they're not out of it, either. Regardless of the Brewers place in the race, I do see some value in the Brewers keeping it as close as possible -- i.e. chasing that 84th win. No one wants to buy tickets to watch our BP continued to get hammered in Aug/Sep. I'd welcome the idea of picking up his 2010 option. I dunno. Weathers certainly has been solid as you point out -- but ~$4M is a lot for a 40 year old reliever -- it may be more prudent to spend that money elsewhere.
  24. Honestly if you think they are out of it you haven't paid much attention to baseball over the last 10 years. How so? a .500 team getting hot for 5 weeks and getting into the race or making the playoffs happens pretty much every single season. You can't take general statements like this and apply them to specific teams, and expect it to hold much water. No reason we can't be that team or any of the other teams sitting around .500 right now. The big reason we can't be that team is our pitching. We have the worst pitching since the AS break, and I don't see that improving enough to get us on the proverbial hot streak.
