  1. - Beat the trade deadline frenzy (just like last year with CC) & acquire a top-tier SP, under salary control through at least 2010 If this truly was his plan, I don't see how anyone can claim his plan didn't fail
  2. I think this is along the "Vargas" signing -- in that I understand why it was done, but DM latched on to another "BF.net lightning rod" player.
  3. If Rottino wasn't a local boy would anyone care that a guy we already DFA'd was traded for a guy we already DFA'd? I don't think anybody cares that we gave up Rottino.
  4. Wasn't Capellan also supposed to be pretty high end. Either a closer or a top two starter? By the time Capellan got here, ATL gave up on him because he couldn't get his off-speed working -- I suspect the Brewers thought he could be a good RP -- but I don't think we thought he could start for us in a top-two fashion anytime soon.
  5. I guess I will just chalk it up as your humor does nothing for me in regards to point #2. There is nothing remotely funny about egg-laying earwigs. It's looking more and more like Rottino really is nothing, though. At least here. He was blocked just about everywhere. I understand that Rottino really had no future here -- I just think it is sort of funny that of all the stop-gap solutions, ours had to be Vargas.
  6. What is the point of this post? There are really 2 points. 1.) I disagree with your idea that Vargas is a quality pitcher, and that this move is anything but a Frank-Burns-MASH deal. I also do not think "Vinny Rottino is absolutely nothing" 2.) I want to promote awareness regarding those earwigs that lay eggs in your brain when you sleep.
  7. You got to give up talent to get talent...especially this year. What does talent have to do with Claudio Vargas? but how does this move hurt us? Sort of like those earwigs that crawl into your ear and lay eggs in your brain. We needed a quality pitcher to get us innings and that is exactly what we got. I take issue with the use of "quality" and "exactly" in this phrase. And we gave up absolutely nothing to obtain it. Vinny Rottino is something, Maxim St. Pierre is absolutely nothing.
  8. Step 1 -- Locate Junk Step 2 -- Insert Foot Step 3 -- Lather Rinse Repeat. I understand that Vargas is a stopgap, and Rottino really has no tangible value. The best way I can describe the feeling I have, is once I was driving through Utah, and I could not get get a good radio signal. I finally got a scratchy signal and once the station tuned in, the first song that they played was "Mr. Roboto." Claudio Vargas is like "Mr. Roboto" or perhaps like "driving through Utah", I will leave it to the scientists to figure it out.
  9. The body was made to be able to heal and be a self regulating organism. By who? -- Everyone's body is different, and some do not have the ability to heal. It seems more a cult then anything else, Its origin stem from religion rather than science. And PS..Chiropractors are REAL doctors..we actually have more hours in a classroom than MDs. You are not real medical doctors -- and that's the bottom line.
  10. Is the latest quote by Jose Canseco to say that there is a current Baseball Hall of Famer who used steroids? I think though there is an interesting nugget here that Canseco brings to light. At some point, (if they already haven't) -- the HOF is going to unwittingly induct a steroid user. And then what happens? -- How do you "uninduct" an enshrinee? or How do you keep other users out? I agree that Canseco is a twit -- but I think if you don't focus on him, and rather his message -- he is making some valid points.
  11. I had a dream last night night I co-authored and published a book with Walter Cronkite. The title of the book was "100 days with FTJ and Walter" - and the premise of the book was that Walter Cronkite and I would tour baseball parks for 100 days and write about the experience. Weird? I think so. I should clarify, I wasn't touring the park with his remains -- rather Walter Cronkite circa 1980.
  12. FTJ, I'm a little curious as to why you think it would be cruel to take a 7 year-old to a chiro... I am not sure I used the word "cruel" -- I'd rather take my growing child to an actual doctor -- for example a ear/throat specialist, than let my growing son be exposed to the dangers of spinal adjustment.
  13. Bill Castro is not the problem. Amen. Bill Castro 4 Life!
  14. Hey AL -- Sorry to hear that your big man isn't feeling well..... Here are some thoughts --- 1.) As you are probably aware, the scientific community doesn't provide a lot of evidence that chiropractics is effective in reducing infections. 2.) Taking a growing boy to a chiropractor is probably a borderline dangerous proposition with little payoff. 3.) I understand that a lot of chronic infections are caused by fluids building up, and not draining properly -- It is a feasible that an "adjustment" could cause fluids to drain, however, the specialist you probably need to see is an ears/throat/nose expert.
  15. Who really holds the reins here in Hall's specific situation? I suspect that if Hall agreed to the assignment, as long it was temporary, the Brewers need to hold up to their end of the bargain.
  16. Can Hall be traded while in AAA? -- If so would it be strategic to do so from a roster manipulation sense?
  17. So, had we had a pitcher in these games with a ERA of one point higher, then these most likely would be losses. That really wasn't my point -- but even in the rigid example you make -- a 2.65 era pitcher wins 2 of those games. In fact, I am 90% sure that at least one out of the four would've been lost, therefore the Brewers left out of the playoffs. No one has claimed that CC was non-essential to make the playoffs. I wouldn't even compare Yo to CC yet I did not do this. let alone CC and Benny combined, shortened years or not. I did not do this either.
  18. I guess I still wonder if Melvin really thought the rotation was going to be as good as last year and was just being willfully naive, or he was just really banking on being able to trade for someone like Jake Peavy or that caliber mid-season? In 2008 when CV and Bush struggled -- McClung was able to save the day with some decent starts -- If DM thought McClung would replicate what he did in 2008 this year, DM probably made a mistake. I think that GMs have to prepare for the inevitability of injuries to the rotation -- certainly there are some injuries that can knock a team out of contention, but every GM is going to have some nicks and bruises to the starters. The trade for a stud/comp picks, is a pretty risky game compared to organizational depth.
  19. I am definitely not in agreement that losing Suppan will be the nail in the coffin Witrado asserted. Generally speaking -- I think this depends on how good you think Suppan really is. We had a pretty heated Suppan discussion at the beginning of the year, and if you are in the camp that Suppan is a serviceable #4-5 MLB starter, then losing Suppan is a big deal, as Witrado asserts. I sort of guessed that Suppan would end up +5.15 ERA -- While that is not good, I am not willing to hand over Suppan's start to AAA fodder in hopes that they will do better -- given our lack of depth of AAA pitching -- It's weird I admit, but I don't see Suppan getting injured as a positive, or a neutral thing to the Brewers hopes in 2009. I certainly would not think it is not the "last nail" -- but it doesn't help us at all. If we continue to circle the toilet though, I do see a value in seeing what some of the AAA pitchers can do given the opportunity.
  20. Why does it seem that just a few understand that this team lost two all-star pitchers from their rotation? It's not hard to understand why they're struggling. I have been asking myself the same question lately. Three things: 1. Yo probably for the most part, has probably replaced Sheets. I think everyone understands that CC's performance in 2008, was unrepeatable -- even by himself -- that said, we really didn't need our "ace" to replicate a 1.65 ERA over 17 starts. If you think about it, if your team averages 4 runs a game, how many more wins does a 2.65 pitcher win over a 1.65 pitcher. 2. Bush and Parra - have really fell far from their projections, and Suppan and Looper have as well to a lesser degree. 2009 is really not about missing two spots in the rotation, it really is about all 5 spots slipping. 3. I think the other variable in our rotation is that in 2008, besides Sheets, Yo, CC, Bush, Suppan & Parra -- the only Brewers to start games in 2008 were CV and McClung -- while neither McClung or CV are super, they are certainly servicable in a pinch -- In 2009 we have already had 5 starts by Mike Burns, and will probably see some more starts if not by Burns, someone of his caliber. In short 2009 is not entirely about "2008Brewers rotation - Sheets - CC = crap" -- our rotation has really slipped on a lot of fronts.
  21. lcbj68c, you are the most pessimistic poster on this entire board. False. He's not even close to the most pessimistic. Remind me, why do you still post here? You don't even seem like a Brewer fan. I'd be hard pressed to find a better Brewer fan than Luke. I don't think I've seen you say one thing positive about the team, the manager, the farm system, or the GM in the last month. The only team that has lost more games in July than the Brewers is SD. I think criticism is warranted.
  22. Oh, I absolutely agree. Just pointing out that in just a week, he's made a number of really great plays already. A lot of the criticism pointed against Lopez is that he is lackadaisical -- I suspect his D fluctuates.
  23. Take the sure $4-5MM one-year deal, ride the bench and watch your stock plummet, I think that there is a lot of hand-waving in this thread w/o looking at the specific situation. Lopez has been dumped by 3 teams in the last year or so. I really find it hard to believe teams are going to be lining up to give him a multi-year deal. I think $5M to ride pine, would be a pretty sweet deal for him regarding his baggage.
  24. That said, I agree that Lopez would not likely want to take on a utility/backup role. Why wouldn't he if he was going to make $4-5M per year?
