  1. The only way that Lee's contract doesn't end up as a significant overpay is if the Astros revenue increases by an incredible, unforseen amount. You have no way to claim that if he is overpaid, it will be significant.
  2. Always hard to judge a deal like the Riske one since he got hurt. Agreed... and I am not trying to say, DM was stupid or Dave Riske sucks -- I think those are topics for a different discussion. I tend to look at these things from a money in vs. money out perspective. The bottom line is that Dave Riske did not give the Brewers good return in 2008 for the money paid to him. All contracts are risks, some players are going to get injured and not be able to perform to expected levels, -- so far I would say Riske's contract is "bad" -- but not "stupid". I think Carlos Lee's contract so far is a decent one, and could very well turn out OK for the Astros. My guess is that he will provide enough positive value from his first 2-3 years to account for any negative value in his last year. I like the idea of this article -- I just think it could have been fleshed out better.
  3. Is George Scott still active in baseball anywhere? He was managing a minor league team a couple of years ago. Scott was a great fielding 1b. He used to wear shark-teeth necklaces. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_UOk3nQn2Pns/SBVepBYZjXI/AAAAAAAABSg/zfQ5bLp5ms0/s400/sc002a660a02.jpg
  4. The problem I have with the list is how arbitrary it is. This was my first reaction as well -- Lee's contract is not "bad" at this point, -- it could end up being bad -- but for now Houston is getting return on their investment. It is getting to the point where any signing of a veteran to a multi-year gets panned, and on the other hand, any 1 year signing no matter how obscene, people just shrug it off.. DM's signing of Gagne was horrible -- $10M for a -1 Value win -- but because it was a one-year deal it gets judged differently. I understand that it would have been worse if Gagne would have gotten a 4 yr deal at $10M per, but it remains that the Gagne 2008 contract was probably one of the worst in baseball in 2008. Riske's deal at this point is probably should have made this list. Riske could certainly turn it around -- but it seems to me to be unlikely that his deal will end up being a good one for the Brewers after 2010.
  5. Face value is whatever is written BY THE TEAM on the face. I don't disagree with what you said -- however, it is my understanding if I went and bought a $50 ticket that had various charges associated with it -- you could sell that ticket here on BF.net for "face value"+"fees".... If you bought 4 $50 tickets I bet there would be at least $25 in ticketmaster type fees...
  6. I don't think anyone would've beat UConn with Price shooting the way he was He put on a show -- that one shot he had, where he made that guy fall down off the dribble was particularly amazing.
  7. By the way -- I thoroughly appreciate "The Weatherman's" efforts throughout the winter, and tornado season.
  8. My mom thought this did more to hold me back than help the slower kids move forward, and I tend to agree. I gained a greater understanding about engineering principles, when I started tutoring other people, than when I took the classes the first time. Perhaps in your specific case your mom is right, but in general, when you teach something, you do enhance your own understanding of a subject matter.
  9. my two favorites are menotti80 and cabfan1126. I agree -- I like cabfan1126 as well -- he knows a lot about public transportation -- that cubfan1126 guy though really grinds my gears.
  10. Ultimately I think the squirrels pissed him off more than the peanuts did.
  11. My wife's grandfather used to feed squirrels peanuts out of his hand, and then eat the squirrels when he got hungry.
  12. But then again, I pretty much demand 100% dependability and think 2 sick days in 3 years is a lot.... You can't treat engineers like that.
  13. I am going to make an appointment to see a doctor right away. This is the most critical thing -- hope it all goes well...
  14. I would just say you are having trouble speaking for long periods of time, and you are not interested in wasting their time. I think Hawing is right, I'd do something on the quicker side.
  15. From a business side, this may have been the best decision. It seems like Roberts is that popular and the Orioles have certainly lost their luster. But I don't think it was the best baseball decision. Baseball is a business. The best baseball decisions are the best business decisions.
  16. As a person in charge of hiring at my job, I would look at it as you being unreliable and would lean towards the other person. I don't think would happen at all, especially at the level of employment you are interviewing at.... clearly it was an accident and does not have anything to do with reliability. If you were selected out of a pool of 200 they are clearly interested in you. I would certainly let them know you were involved in an accident and you are having problems talking for extended periods of time... They don't want to waste their time watching you struggle to talk. I'd probably go see a Dr. if you think you had a concussion. I think I could tell a white lie and say I have to get a check up for my wrist on Wed so that is why I want to move it back. Def. don't do this. I don't know what your wrist has to do with things, but you certainly should have had the foresight to not schedule a wrist appt during the same time as your interview, or vice versa. I'd be 100% honest, and say you banged your head rather bad, you are having problems talking, and out of consideration to their time, you were wondering if the process would be more effective a couple of days down the road. These cats are probably rather busy dudes, and I can tell you they have no interest in watching you impersonate Mushmouth from Fat Albert for 45 minutes. Accidents are not a sign of weakness. Good luck in either case.
  17. The market doesn't really pay 2B that well There aren't many 2bs that are as all around good as Roberts. If Cameron is a good deal at $10M, so is Roberts. there was little chance that Roberts would have got anything close to this offer if he were a FA. Fangraphs value is based on the FA market of past years, and doesn't reflect the smaller salaries that many players are getting this year. I disagree -- I think that a lot of the "low salary talk" is being overstated -- First, Orlando Hudson will get $8M if he stays healthy, so it is not as if money won't be spent. If Hudson did not have the wrist issue, he'd have been signed a lot sooner, and he would be getting $8M in base salary. Good players are still being paid well. Second, the salaries are going to fluctuate, in 4 years $10M may be a bargain -- it's really hard to say. I think the guys who aren't getting paid, are the crappier type A guys that teams do not want to give up a pick for. If Roberts was a FA teams would not have been as concerned about giving a pick for him as they are for a Juan Cruz type of player. If a team was willing to stock the Orioles farm system by trading for Roberts, that would be their best move, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I absolutely think that Roberts is still very tradeable -- if he keeps doing what he does, a $10M contract is not going to scare away playoff teams that need a 2b. The bottom line, I would have loved to have the Brewers sign Roberts to a 4yr $10Mper deal
  18. - Fatter than Joey was my favorite ally during the anti-Yost movement, and from what I recall was one of a handful that was fully aware and adamant of Yost's awfulness very early on... Amen... Yeah, it was definitely an uphill struggle... I definitely owe you a beer or three for your anti-Yost steadfastness. Your "DFA" avatars are the best DJ43.
  19. I think the best poster hands down on this site is: Bring Back the Stein -- and it's not even close in my mind. Of course GenoSeligPrieb is otherworldly as well. The guy who had the avatar with the headless Turnbow bobbledoll I think is the best avatar I have ever seen on this site. Ironically, I think my favorite recurring posts that occur on this site are the Oscar recaps that RobertR does, I really appreciate the effort he puts into those.
  20. He's worth $10M for sure right now... the 4th year may not be the best value -- but I think calling this signing of Roberts a white elephant is a bit much.
  21. So because the average hitter was less talented in the past it means that the good hitters were somehow better? I don't know what to tell you -- 1990 was different than 2006 -- different parks, different pitchers, etc... When Cecil hit 51, the next closest was 40 -- that's a pretty big gap. Cecil had some pretty decent years. I dont think you can compare an AL hitter's OPS from 1990 to a NL hitter from 2006 and readily conclude one is better than the other.
  22. Really? Career numbers: Cecil: .255/.345/.482/.827 Prince: .278/.370/.533/.903 I was speaking to defense -- but I don't think you can really compare Cecil and Prince the way you do effectively... I'd say through their first 3 years they are pretty even when compare to his peers..
