  1. Yost bobble - kkoestler and bikeage77 I am pretty sure that this was rigged http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  2. I also agree that Kendall has just looked pathetic at the plate this year, at somp point his lack of offense will diminish the value of his defense. I think that this has already happened -- I think Kendall's CS% will be closer to 18% than the 40% he had last year. I'd feel more comfortable with McClung in rather than Soup. At least Big Red has an out pitch or two. I would probably agree that I would rather see McClung in instead of Suppan, but I would rather see DiFelice instead of McClung as a starter -- and just keep McClung as a LR guy -- which I get the feeling is going to be used a lot this year. It's early, but Macha hasn't impressed me much yet. Agreed... Good thing I am still in full-battle mode from last year. Braun looks hurt to me, I won't be surprised if we see him on the 60 day DL before the end of the year and that will be the end of our season. I'm really worried about it. I think you are on to something here.
  3. By the way -- 4 bases loaded walks in an inning ties the record held by 9 other teams -- the Braves did this last Wednesday.
  4. If he has control issues he maybe DL'd for Hoffman. Suppan said his elbow issues are no longer a concern -- I know he could be "injured" though. I guess the question I have, is if Suppan loses his spot (in the near future), is DiFelice stretched out enough to make a start? or even McClung for that matter. I'd almost rather see DiFelice in AAA getting some starts under his belt.
  5. How many of you guys think that with Macha - the leash will be literally one more start like he had in SF or this evening? Is that realistic? No, I think Suppan gets at least 5 more starts. McClung and DeeFeliz are not much better options. I'd rather see DiFilease get the nod instead of McClung, but he isn't terribly exciting either. If Suppan was throwing 95mph, but just missing his spots, I suppose one could be a little more optimistic, Suppan looks done.
  6. but in the way you moved in in Little League when the 3 foot, 42-pound nine-hole hitter was up. You mean "thirteen-hole"
  7. Kendall is just like Counsell except without the batting average
  8. wow --- error, HBP -- I guess walking everyone wasn't efficient
  9. He quite obviously was trying to pull everything for a HR to start the season if you watched the games, he admits he was trying to hit 50 HR in april, I am sure it is easier for Prince to admit overswinging, than it is to admit to being overweight. I can entirely sympathize with that. Do you honestly think that going from 280 to 290 is going to completely destroy a players production? If that 10 lbs is pure fat, -- absolutely. I probably wouldn't use the term "completely destroy" -- but if your swing is off just a tad, yeah, that is going to affect your ability to hit a 90mph object. If the weight were the problem he'd either just suck all year or he'd have extra problems as the season went on and he wore out faster than he should. I am a fat guy. When I go to the gym and play basketball, you are correct that I wear down faster than the people I play with -- but it also takes me a lot longer to get my big ass moving at "top speed" as well also. I think it should not defy common sense, that an out of shape or overweight person, is going to struggle more starting up than his peers, as well as tire out faster. I certainly think that people overstate the impact of Prince's weight issues, but I think it is fair to think he is leaving some OPS points on the table as well.
  10. I know the casual fan thinks he is a moron for starting Suppan first but it really does make sense. Being that our rotation doesn't stack up 1vs1 2vs2 and so on with other teams, this is brilliant. Why not throw Suppan out as a sacrificial lamb against the other teams ace? You may be right that this move this move might not make sense to the casual fan -- but I find this approach anything but brilliant. 1.) Macha himself said that he had Suppan start because of the pressure it would put on Yo and Parra. I don't agree with this, but it is a reasonable option. 2.) If Suppan ends up getting more starts that Yo, Parra or even Bush --- that puts us at a distinct disadvantage. 3.) If Macha would have started Yo against Lincecum, we would have had a better chance of winning that game, and getting 2 of 3 from SF. Like Russ said -- we are better off making sure our best pitcher gets the most starts, and our worst starter gets the least amount of starts.
  11. Then why in the world is he out there? Great question. Why not get Dillard or Swindle up?
  12. Also for those advocating "cutting" Suppan if he is pitching badly in a month or two, you understand we'd be on the hook for his whole contract, right? The Brewers just can't afford to throw away money like that. I think most people understand that we are on the hook for 2009, 2010, and some sort of buyout for 2011. That is the predicament. -- I agree that Suppan is going to get a lot more chances that others because of his salary.
  13. Give a young guy a chance, can't be any worse. I am not a Suppan fan -- but it certainly can get a lot worse than Suppan.
  14. The fart noise from your armpit?
  15. 1.) I resolve to see a therapist about Ned Yost. 2.) I resolve that when I need to go to my "happy place", there will be more bacon and nudity involved. 3.) I resolve to accurately attribute the skill level of play that is required to correctly execute a misplay by Weeks -- that is to say, my 97 year old grandmother likely is unable to make any play at the MLB level -- but more accurately my 58 year old aunt probably could. 4.) I resolve to understand the chorizo more thoroughly. 5.) I resolve to rewatch Rocky IV again, to more accurately evaluate if Rocky IV is in fact better than Ned Yost IV
  16. I like Macha's idea of sacrificing him against the other team's number 1 and would do that as much as possible. 2 Things: 1.) I don't think Macha started Suppan for any reason other than he is a veteran and he didn't want Parra or Yo dealing with that pressure. 2.) If Macha sent his worst starter out as a sacrifice -- that was a bad idea, as our #1 or #2 probably would have easily won that game yesterday.
  17. I thought it got a lot of acclaim -- It lasted for 5 seasons, and won a ton of awards... Given the fact it was on HBO, and not family-friendly probably had a lot to do with the lack of recognition.... It's a series that isn't for everyone..
  18. Suppan mostly hit his spots yesterday even with a small strike zone, I'm sure Macha isn't really concerned about Suppan after yesterday. Fair enough, and I would agree with you. I think though that this discussion stems from people's overall expectations or opinions on Suppan's pitching as a Brewer overall, and that this thread really didn't pop up because of what happened yesterday (for the most part). My point is Macha is not going to look at ERA when evaluating things, he is going to watch the game and see how the pitchers are actually throwing I agree here as well -- and like you I think it will take at least 10-15, and probably 20 starts for them to even consider removing Soup from the rotation. ERA is a sloppy stat, but serves in this discussion as a benchmark. Once you get over 5.25 or so for ERA, historically speaking, you don't have a lot of pitchers getting to make 30 starts and maintaining that 5.25 ERA unless you are Barry Zito (overpaid and on a non-contender) or Ian Snell (young pitcher on a non-contender trying to hit his "potential").
  19. You can't judge a pitcher by a single game of results. This is irrelevant to this discussion. No one remotely suggested doing so. I think we have plenty of data to guess a somewhat decent range of ERA where Suppan will end up at if he makes 30+ starts. The original poster was looking for a number of starts, or spot on the calender, and some sort of statistical benchmark, at which point you would pull the plug on Suppan in the rotation. Suppan's leash hasn't 'started' yet because he pitched fine yesterday. This is strictly your opinion. I agree that Suppan's performance was not horrible, but I don't consider not getting past 4 IP "fine". If he starts walking a lot of guys or his location is just bad in general then they can start worrying about it and he probably gets like 9 or 10 starts from that point. This is a better answer. Thanks.
  20. My point is, he might turn 2 out 3 QS's over his next 12 starts and his ERA will still be high. This is a good point, however, for the sake of discussion, I suspect that DJ43 was implying that Suppan's ERA would be based on somewhat "consistent" performances. If you look at 2008 -- there are 11 pitchers that had ERAs substantially over 5.00 heading into the AS break. Some got shut down as a starter -- Andrew Miller, Francis, Eaton, Penny, Gorzelanny, Hendrickson Some got better -- Unit, Arroyo, Randy Myers Some remained sucky -- Zito, Snell Most of the guys that got shut down were not making big bucks (except for Penny who went on the DL for the rest of the season) and Eaton who was owed $8.5 for 2009, and the Phillies ate it -- Eaton was horrible though, and the Phillies let him make 30 starts at a 6.29 ERA in 2007. My guess is that if Suppan went into the AS-Break with a 5.50+ ERA the Brewers would bank on him turning it around like Unit, Myers or Arroyo.
  21. The problem with that is you'd be pulling the plug on pretty much every 5th starter, and a bunch of #4's, in the game. False -- If you look at any season, there are not a lot of pitchers that make 30+ starts and have an ERA substantially over 5.00. If the average 5th starter has an ERA of 6.24 -- that includes a lot of guys that made an emergency start got shelled and then sent down for another option, lather, rinse, repeat.
  22. In the big picture I wouldn't worry about a single start if I were Macha and Suppan threw the ball well in general so this game wouldn't make me even start to think about making a change. Some of you are not doing a good job of answering DJ43's question. The question isn't "Should we panic and pull the plug after one start?". The question is "How long of a leash do you give Suppan?" Here is a recap of the legit responses: trwi7: -- 7 or 8 starts DJ43: -- 10 starts 5.00+ ERA JoeHova: -- End of May. Endaround -- No plug, Suppan pitches the whole season. DonMoney4manager -- No plug. Brewtown82 -- Loss of consciousness due to strangulation. I think this is an interesting question to speculate about. My first inclination is that Suppan will pitch all season long, regardless of ERA. I looked at the list of pitchers last year who pitched 160+ innings and maintained an ERA of over 5.00 -- and generally you have young pitchers on bad teams that are trying to find their potential, or Barry Zito. You don't see a lot of guys with substantially higher ERAs than 5.00 on teams trying to get into the playoffs. I think Suppan (assuming he is healthy) would lose his spot in the rotation only if he had a 5.75-6.00 ERA going into the AS break. A lot probably depends on where the Brewers are in the standings. The scary thing is, is if Suppan gets pulled, insert McClung. I think Suppan would have to pitch really bad for almost half the season to lose his spot in the rotation.
  23. 2005 Ned Yost (yikes!) mini bobble I want to put a claim on this. But instead of sending it to me, I want your wife to videotape you backing over it while your kids scream obscenities at it. I would have to think that this would appease some of the baseball superstition gods.
  24. Heck, Juan Pierre has been getting by on that skill set for a decade, despite absolutely no other redeeming qualities. I hate Juan Pierre, I really do. However, Pierre at his best was head and shoulders better than TGJ. Frankly, there are a lot of pitchers that are better offensive players than TGJ.
  25. 8-14 Slow start out of the gate.
