  1. Sure, there are many people that discuss managerial strategy in there criticism of Yost, but there are others who add nothing to the discussion and feel it necessary to add a "fire Yost" or "Yost is so stupid" comment at every opportunity. Yost is so stupid.
  2. Man, if any quote ever summed up Yost to a tee, the above does it perfectly or this one.... This is my most recent favorite...
  3. You guys think Rock says dumber things in the thinner air?
  4. This should be normalized against OBP, or something -- the Nats are on the bottom, probably because they can't get on base. The Braves seem like a "Good OOB" team, the Reds a bad one. Does GDP mean "grounded" strictly?
  5. I agree with homer -- Chicago is pretty nice for a huge city -- I sure have seen a lot dirtier with less people
  6. Can anyone tell whether Gabe Gross joined in? Look for the pile of beaten-up Red Sox
  7. He got ejected in a game where he only pitched one inning. That's not cool
  8. The ONLY thing that is different about this situation is that it's June. I dont buy that argument. Game #60 counts the same as game #140. I'm all for retaliation in both circumstances. I'm not. I agree with you that what is stupid in June is stupid in September. The Rays are only 1.5 out of first, and leading the WC race in the AL. If Yost had sent our #2 starter to hit a player, risk losing a game, and perhaps incurring injury or suspension of a key starter in the rotation -- you can be assured I'd be livid. I think the whole idea of hitting players is jackassery.
  9. Probably didn't have anything to do with his skin color. It didn't -- People in 1955 were stupid and listened to crappy music. The charts were dominated by the "Sisters" groups, and orchestrated songs by Mitch Miller. There were coma inducing groups like the Platters that charted well in the mid 50s and were African-American. Early rock was classified as R&B, and was dominated by Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Bo Diddley.
  10. I think the "calls a good game" -- Is largely overstated. I was listening to an interview with Kendall and he pretty much shot down the idea that the catcher calls a game. The coaches and battery go through the lineup before the game, so they know what they are going to do before they take the field. In my opinion the most tangible intangible that Kendall brings, especially for a vet. pitcher like Sheets, is the assurance that if a pitch goes into the dirt, Kendall handles it well -- my guess is that pitchers feel more comfortable throwing breaking pitches in the dirt. Throwing runners out has to do a lot for the confidence of the pitcher as well.
  11. Even the Rangers/Reds trade is pretty amazing. Here the Reds pick up Hamilton for nothing in the Rule 5 draft and then after a good year, they flip him to Texas for Edison Volquez. And the really crazy thing, is that the Reds aren't missing Hamilton's offensive production with the arrival of Bruce. I vote for Utley.
  12. the number of times who I rooted for actually influenced the outcome is exactly 0. How can you claim to know this?
  13. 300 wins is usually a 1st ballot ticket. Not always though. I think Glavine is inferior to Maddux and Unit. I think it depends on who is on the ballot with him
  14. How does Floyd Mayweather pull down more in endorsements than Kobe Bryant? Kobe's rape troubles
  15. "Butt" hole chants when he came up to bat, and "you still suck" when he got his hit in the 8th. Bill's not my favorite person in Milwaukee right now but fan display was unacceptable. My major beef, is that the team is playing well, and fans seem more concerned about booing Bill Hill, than cheering on a guy like McClung, who probably pitched the game of his career. This team is not gritty enough to handle a lot of distractions.
  16. -- Boston has cast a wide net in its search for a closer, and inquired Monday on Turnbow. A midseason All-Star, Turnbow lost the job in the second half to Francisco Cordero, who will be back as Brewers closer in 2007. Turnbow seemed to struggle with confidence and fastball command, but he threw in the 96-98 mph range all year with a sharp slider. "I'm not motivated to move him," Melvin said. Link
  17. It sure felt more dramatic as a fan, though. Shortly after the Brewers "postseason odds probability peak" in July, they went through a stretch of games where they went 13-27 -- (thats 52/162). This is the point in the season if you looked at it on a graph, you would circle with a big red pen and indicate as the place where the trolley came off the track. It was dramatic, as Steveo points out, the collapse just happened earlier in the season. I think overall we are in agreement -- the Cubs current probability of playoffs is ~83% -- we are probably not likely to bump them from the playoffs. Our current playoff probability is 16% -- with a 6.6% chance of winning our division -- not real super odds.
  18. However did the Cubs really do a better job spending that money? I don't think there is any question about it for 2008. -- Gagne+Turnbow is what is dragging the Brewers down, the Cubs dont have anchors like these contracts. Injuries to Gallardo and even Cappy (he would be better than McClung) have hurt the Brewers, whereas the Cubs starters have stayed healthy. Yo only makes .400K, and his replacements are not making that much more, Cappy didn't even have a roster space locked up in ST, so I have a hard time justifying his absence as substantial. According to ESPN's salary page the Cubs have a payroll over 40 million higher than the Crew. That is quite substantial. Perhaps, but I am ONLY speaking to pitching -- in reference to the "pitching coach comparison". If there is a difference in pitching results between the Cubs and Brewers, I would list the most substantial variables as: Defense (Ennder) and GM moves, WAY more critical than worrying about whose pitching coach is better.
  19. Look at it this way. Let's say we attached a bunch of ankle weights to Cameron, so he had the exact same speed as Carlos Lee. Who would you rather have playing CF?
  20. Nice tally, FTJ. It underscores how bad the Gagne deal was. That and the need for the Brewers to have 13 pitchers this season.
  21. FTJ, I certainly didn't mean to cut of discussion. Oh, I know... it's just that every other post has a "small sample" disclaimer. When a sample is small, it needs to be supplemented by something, either observation or some kind of tie to a larger, more meaningful sample. Right, again, this is beaten into every one soundly -- I think people still want to talk around it though. These ~100 PAs get a lot of talk on the broadcasts, so I think it is natural to want to discuss them here (sample size be damned). Yost will probably make game-time decisions based on these 100 ABs anyway, and if it is large enough for Yost to run with it, it is large enough for us to whine about it.
  22. It's not so much what the Brewers did that made it so noteworthy; it's that the Brewers' fade coincided with the Cubs resurgence. Right -- but that is essentially what we are discussing here as well, i.e. we need the Cubs to fade and the Brewers to surge. Considering preseason expectations were only around 83 wins and considering that I'm purposely selecting the worst sample that I can find, it's still a bad finish but not THAT bad. BP did a story last year where they looked at the teams with the highest "Postseason Odds", that ultimately did not make the playoffs, and the 2007 Brewers had one of the highest chances of making the playoffs, that didn't make the playoffs in NL history.
