  1. I'm particular to straight up versions of the national anthem, but one of my favorites is Marvin Gaye's version during the 1983 NBA all star game, wholly untraditional and completely awesome. Added:
  2. So... we shouldn't fix the holes we have on our team now becasue there might be holes later? To me shortstop is a high leverage position. You need, at the very least, someone to play defense. It doesn't make a lot of sense to spend assets on pitching and then skimp on defense at the most important (non-catcher) defensive position.
  3. As someone who watched him with the Mariners he is much worse than Escobar. He gives away at bats like it's his job (worse than Gomez). He decides to swing at pitches before they're even released with predictable results. His defensive stats are horrible but don't really give justice to how awful and lazy a defender he is. He is, without a doubt, the worst baseball player I have ever watched. If he is starting for the Brewers than their pitching upgrade is mitigated by terrible defense at the most important position. Escobar had a rough year but is light years better than Betancourt now and in the future.
  4. I think some of that is misleading since he only pitched 8 innings as a reliever his rookie year. He really wasnt a full time starter until 2007. Fangraphs has velocities on his fastball at 87.6, 87.0 and 86.9. They also say he started to cut his fastball which may take some velocity (or less than an MPH difference between pre and post TJ years). In fact their graphs seem to suggest a more consistent (start to start) fastball velocity now then in 2007.
  5. I don't think there's any doubt they were bribed or going to be bribed. The British press' accusations that FIFA is a sanctioned criminal organization essentially killed their bid. That said the soccer still rocks and will be enjoyable to watch on television.
  6. Danizig, to me you're arguing in a circle. Most Brewer fans get their analysis from the paper and the paper doesn't use advanced statistics. The paper doesn't use advanced statistics because people don't understand them. But if the paper used advanced statistics wouldn't people eventually become more familiar with them? I guess, to me, the paper generally, and beat writers specifically, are hired to convey information and make sense of the world around us by using the best sources. Using BA and RBI to evalaute players is like quoting the North Korean News for world politics.
  7. North Dakota Miami Denver Notre Dame Wisconsin Minnesota Michigan Michigan St. Ohio St Penn St Welcome to the AL east of college hockey. Why would non-big ten teams want to join that conference if half those teams won't make the NCAA tournament? More than likely North Dakota, Denver, Notre Dame and Miami would want to stay in cofnerences without the big ten teams (more likely to make the tournament) and schedule big ten teams out of conference. They could schedule big ten teams out of conference because the WCHA is losing two teams and the CCHA is losing three teams. Since there's only one team that is unaffiliated (Alabama), those conferences woudn't be replacing the big ten teams, would have fewer members and a shorter conference season.
  8. The rumor seems to be that Klinsman turned US Soccer down again because they (US Soccer) wouldn't relinquish full control over the operation. Klinsman likely wanted to implement the same systemic changes that he did for Germany. Again, it seems, US Soccer opts for status quo.
  9. I think Bob Bradley did the bare minimum. The bar was set at getting out of the group stage. To do that the US needed 1) the English goalkeeper to commit a howler, 2) to overcome early malaise and deficits against inferior teams (to be fair officiating was not on the US' side). Either of those two things go differently and the US fails to get out of one of the easier groups in the cup. I don't like Bradley because he employs unnecessarily negative tactics agaisnt inferior teams and plays favorites in player selection. This team, at it's best, plays on the front foot (see second halves of Slovenia, Algeria). Yet every game Bradley plays two defensive midfielders centrally, even agaisnt CONCACAF minnows. For my second point I submit Ricardo Clark and Robbie Findley (also Sasha Kjlestian). Most importantly, in international soccer especially, if you're not moving forward, you're falling behind. Is Bob Bradley going to make this team better or is he entirely dependant upon the improving American talent?
  10. It's difficult to comprehend if US Soccer has any familiarity with how to run a national team. Even good coaches don't last two World Cup turns. They seem to be satisfied with just making it out of the group stages. That even ignores the fact it took them two months to reach the conclusion to do nothing.
  11. I saw a complete game shutout by Rueben Quevedo against San Diego in 2002. On the negative I saw the Hendrickson start where he gave up a bunch of runs and didn't record an out, I think it was the Twins. Other than that I haven't been to very many pro baseball games (maybe 2 a year).
  12. This was a strange comment by LaRussa, I thought he and Rolen didn't get along. Agreed that Brandon Phillips, and subsequently the Reds, are worthy of support. I also thought it was great that Schroeder was doing his best to hold back how much he agreed with Phillips on the Brewers broadcast.
  13. Rafalski has been pretty good for a long time. But still probably Heatley.
  14. I've made an allusion to the Gadzuric contract in comparison to Gooden's. Gooden is by far the superior player. However in today's NBA the most important thing is to not have bad/unmovable contracts. My comparison to the Gadzuric contract is that I don't think Gooden's contract is going to be moveable in two years. If all goes to plan Sanders and Illyasova eat into Gooden's minutes. In two years he'll be a 30 year old 8 and 5 guy, who's a knucklehead on defense, and has three years at six per left on his deal. I don't see a market for that, especially if the new CBA reigns in mid level deals.
  15. Brockman played center last year, even guarding Howard. Also Sanders' greatest defensive skill right now is help defense, which is generally most effective from the center position. I also think that right now both profile better offensively as centers/garbagemen. Frankly the idea that Gooden would be defending Howard or Garnett is just as scary as Brockman or Sanders.
  16. I thought he was our starting power forward? He may not even be the backup center. I don't know if this has been posted here or whether I read it on Real GM but Gooden hasn't been particularly good playing the center position and has stated that he doesn't like playing the center position. I hope the Bucks didn't give him that contract because he physically can play center and backup Bogut. They could sign any stiff to be the backup center, or go with Brockman or Sanders or re-sign Thomas.
  17. I don't think it's the size of the contract that bother's people (especially seeing what Darko and Amir Johnson got) it's the length and guaranteedness that seem like overpaying. Gooden's been around for awhile, how good is he going to be in five years? No one want's to have another Gadzuric-like contract.
  18. You have to include that Parra had an error too making any unearned runs rightfully earned and in fact should count double towards his ERA.
  19. Might the Brewers be the worst bunting team in the history of baseball. Combine that with Keystone Kops defense and we have an absolute lack of fundamentals.
  20. Thanks trwi (or whoever intiially compiled that), that supports my view of Gooden. His stats look nice on paper but do you really want him on your team? I guess it's a talent upgrade. Either way I hope that Ersan and Sanders can eat into his playing time as the year progresses. As far as Hammond, I didn't like his moves (and lack of moves) the first year to not shed salary when the Jefferson thing didn't work. But it all seemed to work out last year and he achieved financial flexibility, got Salmons, established a team identity, had some wiggle room and Redd's expiring going forward. Now he spent it all and has no finanicial flexibility and his money is tied long term to non-star 30 year olds (a lot like two years ago, allbeit now with far superior youth). Quite a roller coaster.
  21. The thing is if they don't sign Ridnour they can't really sign anyone anyone good to back up Jennings. They used up all their cap space on Gooden. I think the stats show that Gooden and Smith are good comps but Smith is tons better defensively. As good as Skiles is I'm not sure you can coach up team defense and bball IQ, the two things Gooden lacks and the reason he's moved around so much. I fear the Bucks are committing too much to a guy that is a knucklehead right now and isn't going to get any better.
  22. The Bucks hold Ridinour's Bird Rights so his contract doesn't have to fit under the salary cap
  23. This deal shocks me. I consider Gooden a hollow stats guy but it seemed like the Bucks were his likely destination. I imagined the Bucks were looking for someone to take the Thomas role only with a better midrange game. Instead it seems they envision a larger role here. There is no reason to pay 32m over 5 for Kurt Thomas' role. My question is why do this when you already have Ersan and Sanders as the future? This makes no sense, I question if the contract figures are legitimate.
  24. Each team can make three substitutions per game. They can be done whenever there is a dead ball (throw in, corner, goal kick). The clock does not stop while the substitution is made. The strategies generally vary depending upon the score of the game. Teams that are leading substitute in order to put more defenders on the field, put fresher players on or if it's really late, to waste time. Trailing or tied teams will use subs to put more offensive players on the field. Other substitution reasons is if a player has a yellow card and is susceptible to picking up another. In that case he may be substituted to put on a player with no warnings. Ineffectiveness and injury can also result in subs.
