  1. I might be wrong on this, but isn’t the magic number still 5 until (if?) the Cardinals lose tonight? They still only have 69 losses (to 70 for the Reds).
  2. Hopefully, this guy's "sources" are accurate: https://metsmerizedonline.com/2021/09/sources-stearns-beane-and-epstein-all-unlikely-to-join-mets.html/
  3. After beating the Cardinals yesterday (September 5th), the Brewers now have an 11-game lead in the division. This is the largest the Brewers have ever led a division by in franchise history. Ironically, the previous record of 10.5 games was first set exactly 10 years to the day before (9/5/2011) with… a victory over the Cardinals.
  4. At 41-20 with 20 road games left, the Brewers have now guaranteed a winning record on the road.
  5. His Twitter bio and picture no longer have any reference to the Brewers (as they previously did) so I am guessing there is some fire to this smoke. Guess we will find out soon.
  6. One detail that I heard on the radio broadcast yesterday is that we have not played the Cardinals since Adames joined the team. We last played them on May 13 and next play them on August 17. Going over 3 months without playing a division rival is just crazy.
  7. Yelich and Hiura combined this year: 10 HR in 407 AB Pina and Nottingham combined this year: 11 HR in 143 AB
  8. For a Brewers fan in their mid-40's like me, it has been nothing short of amazing watching The Big 3 pitch this year. Oh how I have longed for a stable of home-grown aces like Woodruff, Burnes, and Peralta. A little perspective: - Woodruff (5.0), Burnes (4.2), and Peralta (4.0) all currently have a bWAR of 4.0 or higher (with 47 games remaining in the season). Only once (1992) have the Brewers had a staff with 3 pitchers with a bWAR of 4.0 or higher (Wegman 4.8, Navarro 4.6, Eldred 4.2). - As bWAR is a cumulative stat and we still have about 30% of the season to play, I thought I would look at it from a bWAR per start perspective to see how The Big 3 match up. Here are the top-10 all-time in Brewers' history (through 8/11): .300 Eldred 1992 (4.2 bWAR, 14 starts) .288 Sabathia 2008 (4.9, 17) .276 Higuera 1986 (9.4, 34) .241 Caldwell 1978 (8.2, 34 starts) .239 Higuera 1988 (7.4, 31) .227 Woodruff 2021 (5.0, 22) .217 D'Amico 2000 (5.0, 23) .212 Sheets 2004 (7.2, 34) .210 Burnes 2021 (4.2, 20) .190 Peralta 2021 (4.0, 21) The other 7 seasons listed are among the most memorable in Brewers' history (2008 Sabathia, 1992 Eldred, 2004 Sheets, Higuera's run in the late 80's). And yet we have 3 pitchers having this type of success IN THE SAME SEASON! With all this said, I fear that they will somewhat cancel each other out when it comes to Cy Young voting and it will probably go to Wheeler or Bueller.
  9. I would say this is correct. With Hader, Lauer, and Houser needing to be added to the 26-man, it is probably a given that Milner and Topa are optioned. Gustave likely gets optioned when he comes back as well. That leaves one more roster spot that is needed, which probably will be Sanchez as he still has options remaining while Strickland does not.
  10. It will be close. He has averaged 4.2 PA in the 69 games he has played so far for the Brewers. With 48 games left, it looks like he will be about 10 NL PA short of the 501 needed to be a qualifier. His 3.4 fWAR is second in all of baseball since May 22 (Cedric Mullins is at 3.5). Next in the NL is Tatis Jr. at 3.1 (and he is still out with the shoulder injury).
  11. Pretty sure Sanchez is in line for the 1-pitch win. So he will likely tie the MLB record. I assume it has been done before. Wonder how many other times? Actually in 2003, B.J. Ryan recorded a win without throwing a pitch for the Orioles (picked off a runner before throwing a pitch).
  12. Pretty sure Sanchez is in line for the 1-pitch win.
  13. Great article by Will Sammon today at the Athletic about the 4 high schoolers the Brewers signed (Vire, Low, Avina, and Nicasia). https://theathletic.com/2754716/2021/08/06/seeing-the-brewers-high-school-draft-picks-through-eyes-of-the-scouts-who-evaluated-their-potential/ There are very few things that I am willing to subscribe to, but as a Wisconsin sports fan, the Brewers content by Sammon and the Badgers content by Jesse Temple are well worth the $5 a month.
  14. There was a question about Hiura during Keith Law's chat today that I found interesting: Q: What happened to Hiura? Does he just need a change of scenery? A: The Brewers tried to turn him into a big launch-angle, swing-up for power guy, and it has ruined him as a hitter. He's a zero at the plate right now. I don't know anyone who could hit the way he's swinging. It's aggravating - this kid was going to make a ton of money just hitting for average with lots of doubles, and someone took that away from him to chase the latest fad. Swing optimization has worked wonders for some players, but it is not a one-size-fits-all solution.
  15. There is a good chance that the Reds could have the 5th best record in the NL and still miss the playoffs. Both BRef and Fangraphs currently project the Reds to win more games than any NL East team but still fewer than the 2nd and 3rd place NL West teams.
  16. It still blows my mind that the Brewers were able to turn Drew Rasmussen, J.P. Feyereisen, and Bowden Francis into Willy Adames and Rowdy Tellez. In 86 total games with the Brewers, Adames and Tellez have combined for 4.1 bWAR (3.3 in 65 games for Adames, 0.8 in 21 games for Tellez).
  17. At this point I think they’re just trying to see how many different players they can get a World Series ring.
  18. I was hoping we were done facing him this year. Has 3 HR in 4 games against the Brewers.
  19. Isn't even arby eligible until 2023.
  20. In all seriousness, those 3 players have already contributed 4.1 bWAR to the team (Adames 3.1, Tellez 0.7, Strickland 0.3). Any serious analysis of the Brewers performance at the trade "deadline" would take that into account and give them bonus points for making the moves sooner than the final week in order to reap the benefit for more of the season.
  21. Going out on a limb: Package deal for Buxton and Taylor Rogers. Like Norris, Rogers is a guy whose FIP has been better than his ERA the last 2 years.
  22. Thought this was a joke...but nope. https://www.treehugger.com/why-millionaire-pitcher-daniel-norris-lives-in-a-van-4868265 Well, earlier we doubled-down on lefty 1B that look like they could play on a beer league softball team. Maybe they wanted to add another eclectic environment-loving lefty to the pen.
  23. After winning the World Series in 2016 with their young core, I feared the Cubs would be force to be reckoned with for the next five years. I must say it has been a pleasure to watch the Brewers have a hand in preventing them from accomplishing much during that time. 2018 After games on September 2, the Fangraphs Playoff Odds gave the Cubs a 93.2% chance to win the division. The Brewers stood at 4.9% to win the division. The next day, the two teams started a 3-game series. The Brewers got a walk-off win in the first game after Kris Bryant's questionable decision to go for a third to first double play instead of taking the force out at home with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth. The Brewers took 2 of 3 from the Cubs in that series and did the same a week later at Wrigley Field. Beginning with the Labor Day comeback, the Brewers won 18 of their last 24 games to finish the regular season tied with the Cubs for first, resulting in a Game 163 at Wrigley. The Cubs lost the game (and the division) to the Brewers and then the deflated bunch lost the WC game to the Rockies for a quick exit from the post-season. 2019 After beating the Brewers on September 5 in the first game of a 4-game series, Fangraphs gave the Cubs a 86.5% chance to make the playoffs and a 41.0% chance to win the division. They had the Brewers at a 5.6% chance to make the playoffs. Instead, the Brewers won the last 3 games of the series and went 18-5 in their last 23 games. Meanwhile, the Cubs choked, going 8-15 down the stretch as the Brewers won a Wild Card berth and the Cubs missed the playoffs. 2021 After the Cubs no-hit the Dodgers on June 24, the Brewers and Cubs were tied for first with a 3-games series set to start the following week. The Cubs lose 3 straight to the Dodgers while the Brewers sweep the Rockies, giving the Brewers a 3-game lead to start the series. The Brewers proceed to sweep the Cubs, including a soul-crushing final game in which the Cubs take a 7-0 lead in the first inning before giving up 15 unanswered runs. The Cubs go on to lose their next 5 games (11 straight in all) while the Brewers win their next 3 (for an 11-game winning streak) resulting in the Cubs deciding to be sellers, marking an end to the Cubs' 5-year post-World Series window. Results from 2017 to 2020 (with 2021 yet TBD): Cubs: 3 Playoff Appearances (2 Division Titles, 1 WC), 1 LCS Appearance, 4-9 postseason record Brewers: 3 Playoff Appearances (1 Division Title, 2 WC), 1 LCS Appearance, 7-6 postseason record
