  1. Rattlers fall in game two on a walkoff grand slam Phillips sends QC 6-4 win and a doubleheader sweep By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/8/4/83454884/cuts/July_6_Victor_Diaz_WEB_4oe76a4c_r9phxty6.jpg Timber Rattlers starting pitcher Victor Diaz went 6-1/3 innings in game two of Sunday's doubleheader against the Quad Cities River Bandits at Modern Woodmen Park. (Rich Guill) DAVENPORT, IA - Brett Phillips hit a walkoff grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Quad Cities River Bandits a 6-4 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in game two of Sunday's doubleheader at Modern Woodmen Park. The River Bandits swept the twinbill with a 5-0 win in game one and the walkoff win in game two. Wisconsin starting pitcher Victor Diaz was within two outs of a complete game victory, but the bullpen could not hold on after he came out of the game with two on and one out. Quad Cities (45-41 overall, 10-7 second half) appeared headed for a big inning in the bottom of the first against Diaz. James Ramsay reached on an error to start the frame. Diaz walked the next two batters to load the bases with no outs. Diaz got the first out on a foul pop. Ronnie Mitchell hit a sharp single to right to drive in Ramsay for a 1-0 lead. Diaz slammed the door on the Bandits in the first with a strikeout and a force play. Wisconsin (45-41, 9-8) got on the board in the top of the fourth without a hit. Angel Ortega was hit by a pitch with one out to reach first. Johnny Davis drew a walk. Ortega took third on a pitch in the dirt with Omar Garcia at the plate. Garcia's grounder to short was enough to get Ortega home with the tying run. Michael Ratterree put the Rattlers in front with a long, leadoff home run in the top of the fourth. The homer, Ratterree's fourteenth of the season, was the first hit of the game for the Rattlers. Dustin DeMuth and Rafael Neda kept the hits coming with back-to-back singles. Steve Halcomb loaded the bases with a one out single to bring Ortega to the plate. Ortega lined a single to left to drive in DeMuth for a 3-1 lead. The Rattlers tacked on a run in the top of the fifth against reliever Michael Feliz. DeMuth drew a walk with two outs. Neda stepped in and worked the count to 3-2. Neda drilled a double to left-center and DeMuth, who was running on the pitch, scored easily for a 4-1 lead. Quad Cities shaved a run off the Wisconsin lead in the bottom of the fifth. James Ramsay tripled to start the inning. A grounder to short by Marc Wik drove in Ramsay to make the score 4-2. Diaz worked a 1-2-3 sixth and went back out for the bottom of the seventh inning, but allowed a leadoff single to Dayne Parker. Diaz got the first out on a flyball to center. Diaz looked like he would get the second out on a flyball to center off the bat of Ramsay, but the ball was lost in the lights and dropped in for a single. That was the end of the line for Diaz, who was near 100 pitches. Tyler Spurlin, who picked up the win for the Rattlers in Friday's comeback victory, took over and got ahead of Wik 1-2. But, Wik chopped a single through the left side of the infield to load the bases. Phillips drove the first pitch of his at bat against Spurlin over the wall in right-center for the walkoff slam and the doubleheader sweep. Sunday marks the first time the Timber Rattlers have been swept in a doubleheader this season. They had split four and swept three from their opponents prior to Sunday. The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday. They resume play on Tuesday at Cedar Rapids with the first game of a three-game series against the Kernels. Tristan Archer (3-3, 3.44) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Wisconsin. Lewis Thorpe (1-1, 5.16) is set to start for the Kernels. Game time is 6:35pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. Speaking of Mehring he mentioned that when new arrivals join the team they have to answer 3 questions on the bus, anyone can ask a question and anything goes. Dustin Demuth was asked how to get Kyle Schwarber out and Demuth answered that it wasn't possible... here's hoping he was very wrong. Angel Ortega was actually hit square in the head by the pitch but managed to stay in the game. Mehring reiterated that the T-Rats are using the new batting helmets this year and he credited the new equipment with Ortega's ability to stay in the game. Rafael Neda (2-2, 2B, HBP) has been an OBP machine of late, though he's clearly sick of being hit by pitches, now 4 games in a row. He's hitting .393 over his last 10 which has pushed his season AVE up to .272. Johnny Davis continues his steep learning curve as he made a great play in the 4th inning but he also had a couple of gaffes today, 1 in each game which directly led to runs but weren't scored as errors. 2. Bandits shutout Rattlers in game one Quad Cities beats Wisconsin 5-0 By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers DAVENPORT, IA - Anthony Banda struck out ten Quad Cities River Bandits in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Modern Woodmen Park. Chris Lee held the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scoreless through six innings. It was Lee who picked up the win as the Bandits got some timely hits to beat the Rattlers 5-0. The River Bandits (44-41 overall, 9-7 second half) took advantage of an error in the second inning to score three unearned runs for an early lead. Chase McDonald's reached on a throwing error after his routine grounder to short to start the Quad Cities second. Brett Booth singled with one out to put two runners on base. Banda struck out Brian Holberton for the second out. Thomas Lindauer followed the strikeout with a home run to left. The three-run blast gave Quad Cities a 3-0 lead. McDonald sparked another rally for the River Bandits in the bottom of the third with a two-out single. Ronnie Mitchell's triple to center scored McDonald from first to make the score 4-0. In the bottom of the fifth, McDonald cashed in a run with an RBI single. Jose Fernandez drew a walk, stole second, and stole third. McDonald drove a one-out single through a drawn-in infield and the Bandits led 5-0. The Timber Rattlers (45-40, 9-7) struggled to get anything against Lee. Chris McFarland had a single in the first and a single in the fourth, but did not score. In the fifth, Rafael Neda singled and Jose Pena walked with one out, but Lee got a pair of flyouts to right to end the threat. In the sixth, Johnny Davis reached on a bunt single and Clint Coulter doubled with two outs to put runners on the corners. Taylor Brennan lined a 1-0 pitch right at the second baseman for the final out of the inning. Banda struck out ten over five innings to set a new single game high as a professional for strikeouts, but allowed five runs - two earned - on six hits to take the loss. The defeat ended Banda's personal three-game winning streak. Lee walked one and struck out one to earn his second straight victory. Chris Cotton closed out the Rattlers with a scoreless ninth. This game was just the third time the Timber Rattlers have been shutout this season. 11. Sounds Fall To Express, 4-3 Pagnozzi Belts Three-Run Homer To Provide Nashville Offense In Loss Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/5/4/76302054/cuts/MattPagnozzi_z8x9usa1_a8t9z4fm.jpg (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express scored four unanswered runs to hang a 4-3 loss on the Nashville Sounds on Saturday evening at The Dell Diamond. With the defeat, Nashville's lead in the PCL American Conference Southern Division was reduced to a half-game over the Express. Mike Fiers (6-4) took the loss despite turning in a quality start for the Sounds, allowing two earned runs (four total runs) on four hits while striking out eight and not walking a batter in his seven frames of work. Catcher Matt Pagnozzi gave the Sounds a 3-0 lead in the third inning when he belted a three-run homer to left off Express starter Luke Jackson. Caleb Gindl (walk) and Hector Gomez (single) scored on the blast, the backstop's ninth round tripper of the year. Pagnozzi's longball extended Nashville's season-best home run streak to eight straight games. Nashville missed a chance to do further damage in the frame after loading the bases with one out following the Pagnozzi homer. However, Jackson escaped the jam by fanning Matt Clark and retiring Pete Orr on an inning-ending groundout. Clark made his Sounds and Brewers organization debut in the contest, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Round Rock pulled back within a run at 3-2 in the bottom of the third with a pair of unearned runs resulting from a throwing error by Orr at third base. Following the gaff, Luis Sardinas and Jared Hoying contributed run-scoring doubles against Fiers. The Express pulled in front in the fifth against Fiers. After the right-hander hit Josh Wilson with a pitch, Ryan Strausborger ripped a game-tying triple into the right field corner. Sardinas followed with a go-ahead RBI groundout to put the home team in front, 4-3. Michael Kirkman (2-4) picked up the victory after working a pair of perfect relief innings behind Jackson for the Express. After squandering the bases-loaded opportunity in the third, Nashville placed only one runner into scoring position in the final six frames against Round Rock pitchers. Kevin Mattison was stranded at second when Jeremy Hermida struck out to end the seventh. Sidewinding closer Ben Rowen retired the Sounds in order in the top of the ninth to notch his third save of the year. The teams wrap up the three-game series with a 7:05 p.m. rubber match finale on Sunday evening. Right-hander Ariel Pena (4-6, 4.73) will make the start for the Sounds and face Round Rock right-hander Phil Irwin (4-1, 4.21). Nashville Boxscore Nashville Recap Nashville Gameday
  12. Rattlers declare victory with 5-run ninth Wisconsin stuns River Bandits with late comeback By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers DAVENPORT, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored five times in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the Quad Cities River Bandits 5-3 on Friday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Steve Halcomb's two-out, two-run double broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Rattlers to the win. Preston Gainey struck out ten over seven innings for the Timber Rattlers. Wisconsin (45-39 overall, 9-6 second half) had a shot to score first. Johnny Davis started the game with a walk and Chris McFarland followed with a single. Michael Ratterree's chopper to short was fielded by Dayne Parker, who threw to third. It appeared that Bandits third baseman Marc Wik caught the ball in foul territory off the bag and missed the bag as he stepped to it for the force out. Davis and Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson were unhappy when Davis was ruled out by the base umpire who was positioned on the infield grass with a tough angle to see whether Wik got the base or not. Clint Coulter continued the inning against River Bandits starter Adrian Houser with a single to shallow right to load the bases with one out. But, Houser escaped the inning with a strikeout and a force play at second. The hit by Coulter was the last hit Wisconsin would get until the ninth. Houser allowed one more runner, a two-out hit batsman on Rafael Neda in the fourth, over his final five innings of work. Jose Fernandez broke the scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth. Brett Phillips started the inning by reaching on an error. Gainey got the next two outs. Then, Fernandez homered to the left field berm and the River Bandits (43-41, 8-7) were up 2-0. Gainey went seven innings, allowed two hits, and walked four. He allowed those two unearned runs, but set a new single game high for strikeouts in a game as a professional with his ten punchouts. However, it appeared he was headed for his third straight loss. Tyler Brunnemann relieved Houser in the seventh and worked two perfect innings to maintain the 2-0 lead. Quad Cities went to Frederick Tiburcio to close out the game in the ninth. McFarland singled back up the middle on an 0-2 pitch to start the inning for the first Wisconsin hit since the first inning. Ratterree and Coulter walked to load the bases. Brennan's sacrifice fly to right was deep enough to score McFarland. Ratterree tagged and went to third. Coulter saw the throw going through to third and he took second base. Rafael Neda walked to reload the bases and that was all for Tiburcio. Andrew Walter took over on the mound and faced Omar Garcia first. Garcia lined an 0-1 pitch that looked like a sure hit to right-center. Fernandez made a leaping grab and got the ball in his glove for a moment. The ball popped free and rolled towards second. Coulter held the base to make sure the line drive got through, but took off for third when the ball dropped out of the glove of Fernandez. The Bandits second baseman corralled the ball and stepped on second for the force play on Neda. His throw to first was late to get Garcia. The throw to third by first baseman Jon Kemmer was too late to get Coulter for the third out. Since the River Bandits could not turn the game-ending double play on the sequence, Ratterree scored the tying run from third. Garcia stole second to get into scoring position with Steve Halcomb at the plate. Then, Halcomb drilled a hanging 1-2 pitch down the line in left for a double that scored both Coulter and Garcia to put the Rattlers up 4-2. Angel Ortega followed with an RBI single to score Halcomb and the Rattlers were up 5-2. Tyler Spurlin, who took over for Gainey to start the eighth, went back out for the bottom of the ninth and allowed a double to Ronnie Mitchell. Brian Holberton singled with one out to knock in Mitchell to cut Wisconsin's lead to two runs. Spurlin got Kemmer to fly out to left for the second out and struck out pinch-hitter Brett Booth to close out the River Bandits. Friday was the second time the Timber Rattlers have won a game when trailing heading into the ninth inning this season. The series continues on Saturday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Anthony Banda (4-5, 4.40) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Quad Cities will counter with Chris Lee (3-5, 4.27). Game time is 6:00pm. Blazek allowed just one hit in 5 1/3 innings while striking out six and not allowing a walk to pick up his first victory in 2014. Alfredo Figaro, Brent Leach, and Donovan Hand followed out of the Nashville bullpen to clinch the victory, combining to allow just two hits and no walks over the remaining 3 2/3 innings. It marks the Sounds' league-leading ninth shutout victory of the season. The Sounds opened the scoring in the top of the second when catcher Shawn Zarraga knocked in Sean Halton, 2-for-4, with a single. Nashville later broke the game open in the top of the fifth on a pair of home runs; a solo shot from Hector Gomez and a two-run blast from Jeremy Hermida. Nashville Boxscore The shortest game summary of the year... I have a love/hate thing going with Michael Blazek, this sums it up well. More than once I've been ready to move on from him... Wisconsin closes out homestand with 5-3 over Cedar Rapids Alexander & Williams make four-run second inning stand By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/3/0/82991030/cuts/Tyler_Alexander_July_3_icf4eznw_keqg3n9f.jpg Tyler Alexander pitched five innings, allowed one earned run, and struck out four to earn his fifth win of the season for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. (Ann Mollica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored four times in the bottom of the second inning and beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels 5-3 Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Tyler Alexander tossed five innings for the win and Taylor Williams went four innings for the save as the Rattlers closed out a homestand with a win. Cedar Rapids (35-48 overall, 4-9 second half) took the lead with an unearned run in the top of the second. Jason Kanzler drew a walk with one out. An errant pickoff throw by catcher Clint Coulter allowed Kanzler to go around to third base. JD Williams knocked in Kanzler with a sacrifice fly. The Timber Rattlers (44-39, 8-6) responded in the bottom of the second by loading the bases with no outs against Kernels starter Ryan Eades. Taylor Brennan singled, Rafael Neda doubled, and Omar Garcia walked. Eades got the first out. Then, Angel Ortega doubled to right to knock in Brennan and Neda for a 2-1 lead. Eades walked Johnny Davis to reload the bases and Chris McFarland's sacrifice fly to right was deep enough to score Garcia for a 3-1 lead. Michael Ratterree drew the third walk of the inning to load the bases one more time. Clint Coulter cashed in a run with a single to left. Alexander allowed one more run in his outing. The Kernels loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth on a pair of singles and an error. Chad Christensen's sacrifice fly scored a run to make it 4-2. Alexander, who has won four straight decisions, closed out his evening by striking out the next two batters. Brennan extended the Wisconsin lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth when he launched his ninth home run of the season. Brennan's ninth home run of the season was a solo shot to left. Taylor Williams allowed three hits and had an error committed in the field when he came on in the top of the sixth inning. Ryan Walker singled to right with one out to drive in a run, but Ratterree threw him out at second base as Walker tried to stretch his hit into a double. Williams struck out Zack Granite for the final out of the inning. Williams, who is now 5-0 with two saves in his last seven appearances, closed out the game with a 1-2-3 seventh and a 1-2-3 eighth. In the ninth, the Kernels had two on with two out and the lead run at the plate in the person of Christensen. Williams won the battle by striking out Christensen on three pitches. The Rattlers righty struck out six over his four innings and is 3-for-3 in save opportunities this season. The Timber Rattlers begin a road trip on Friday night with a game against the Quad Cities River Bandits. Preston Gainey (2-5, 4.29) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. The River Bandits have named Adrian Houser (4-3, 4.40) as their starter. Game time is 7:00pm. Taylor Williams was sharp, he made 1 really bad pitch on an 0-2 count which turned into the J.D. Williams double and ended up costing him a run. Williams was working 93-94 according to the TV broadcast. Taylor Brennan's (2-4) HR was a no doubter, the only question was if it would hit the scoreboard or not. Rafael Neda (2-3, 2 2B, HBP) continues his recent hot streak and had the other multi-hit game for the T-Rats. It was another tough day defensively with Clint Coulter committing his 7th error, Angel Ortega his 23rd, and Brennan his 18th. You wouldn't guess it by their error totals but both Ortega and Brennan have the potential to be plus defenders. On the plus side Michael Ratterree gunned another runner and picked up his 9th OF assist. Wisconsin Recap Wisconsin Gameday
  18. Packed House Watches Sounds Drop Series Finale, 7-5 First-Place Nashville Completes Homestand With 6-2 Mark Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/8/2/82977882/cuts/Gomez_July3_4h4ay8lz_p52wqb6x.jpg (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds suffered a 7-5 loss to the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds in front of a season-high crowd of 10,251 fans on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium. The series finale defeat snapped the first-place Sounds' season-best six-game winning streak. Nashville (46-42) finished its homestand with a 6-2 record. Memphis jumped out a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Sounds starter Taylor Jungmann. The right-hander walked the bases loaded with two outs before giving up a two-run single to center by Pete Kozma. The Sounds got a run back in the bottom of the first when Hector Gomez and Logan Schafer opened the frame with back-to-back doubles off John Gast. The teams combined for seven runs during the third inning as the Redbirds moved their lead to 6-4. Memphis used five hits and a Sounds error to plate four runs in the top of the frame against Jungmann. Sounds right fielder Jeremy Hermida (2-for-3) responded in the home half of the frame by slugging a two-out, three-run homer to right off Gast, the outfielder's second longball of the series and tenth of the year (tying Hunter Morris for the team lead). Jungmann (4-5) drew the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits in his five innings of work. Redbirds All-Star right fielder Stephen Piscotty increased the visitors' lead to 7-4 in the top of the seventh when he smashed a solo homer to center off Johnnie Lowe, his sixth big fly of the year. The Sounds pulled within a pair in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch-hitter Eugenio Velez legged out a one-out triple and scored on a Hector Gomez groundout to make it a 7-5 contest. Reliever Jose De La Torre, making his Greer Stadium debut, worked into and out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, fanning Greg Garcia to escape the jam to work a scoreless inning. Nashville didn't go down without a fight in the ninth against Memphis reliever Jorge Rondon. Matt Pagnozzi and Pete Orr opened the inning with consecutive singles. After Donovan Hand's sacrifice attempt resulted in a forceout at third, Rondon fanned Gomez and retired Logan Schafer on a game-ending groundout to notch his first save of the year. The Sounds embark on a seven-game road trip tomorrow, beginning with the 7:05 p.m. opener of a four-game series at Round Rock (AAA-Rangers). It will be the first of 16 meetings between the division rivals over the next two months. Right-hander Michael Blazek (0-3, 4.96) will make the start for Nashville and face Express left-hander Robbie Ross (0-0, 0.00). Nashville Boxscore Taylor Jungmann didn't have a great day. Jose De La Torre and Donovan Hand pitched scoreless frames. Nashville Recap The 3rd got away from Taylor as he added an error to an already difficult series of events. 19. Pioneer notes: DeMuth delivers with hit tool Helena third baseman, drafted out of Indiana, zeros in on fastballs http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/1/6/82778416/cuts/AP13060908057_ob4x6d3e_z3vaoe07.jpg Dustin DeMuth, drafted out of Indiana, had 24 hits and a .592 slugging percentage in his first 13 games. (Phil Sears/AP) Dustin DeMuth struck out just four times in his first 54 professional at-bats. Entering Wednesday, the rookie Helena third baseman was leading the Pioneer League in hitting with a sizzling .444 average. There's nothing complicated about the left-handed-hitting DeMuth's approach at the plate. He's been doing it his whole life. "I'm just attacking fastballs early in the count," DeMuth explained. "And if they do throw me offspeed early, I try to let that go as much as possible. I'm not trying to hit a home run every time or hit a double every time. If it's pitched outside, I just try to hit it to left field. And if it's inside, pull it." After a 3-1 victory over Great Falls on Tuesday, DeMuth's numbers looked like something out of a video game: 24 hits, a .483 on-base percentage and a .593 slugging percentage, all of which ranked in the top-two league-wide after 13 games. The Brewers love DeMuth for his refined eye at the plate. He's renowned in scouting circles for his smooth, compact swing and his ability to hit for a high average. He doesn't have a ton of power, but he's a proven all-fields hitter who consistently puts balls in the gap. Defensively, he has an excellent arm. DeMuth's quick transition to professional baseball shouldn't come as too big a surprise considering his indomitable four-year career at Indiana University, where his coach, Tracy Smith, considered him one of the best athletes on a campus that offers 22 intercollegiate sports. DeMuth quarterbacked his high school football team in LaPorte, Indiana, and was also a standout basketball player there. During his senior year, he made all-conference and was named to the all-area team in three sports. But baseball is his game. "I just realized that this was my best chance to go far," he said. At Indiana, DeMuth was the scourge of the Big Ten. He hit .377 as a junior and .374 as a senior, and finished with a career average of .344. He was drafted in the eighth round by the Twins in 2013 but chose to stay in school. This year, the Brewers came calling in the fifth round. "I wouldn't trade it for anything," DeMuth said. "My senior year in college, being a leader on that team and with the team that we had there. … It gave me a year to mature and helped me realize what kind of player I am and how good I can be if I work hard. "I think I'm athletic. I can play a lot of positions on the baseball field. I can run, I can hit, I can throw, I can hit for power. … My athleticism has helped me with all those facets of the game. Hopefully it will carry me a long way."
