At this point, this sounds like a pretty decent idea. Overbay's slam + gritty veteraness + clubhouse awesomeness means that he's not going anywhere... he's a "winner"! 20 years past his prime, but a winner none the less... -
Sounds Rally To Win In Memphis, 4-2 Nashville's Hector Gomez and Pete Orr Go Deep Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/4/6/78466946/cuts/Hector_Gomez_519_1_Large_fpnfh2vr_mziy8nhz.jpg MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds (49-44) got off to a slow start Tuesday night at AutoZone Park, but mounted a late-inning comeback to win 4-2 over the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds. After being held without a hit through the game's first six innings and trailing by two, Nashville's bats awoke from their slumber and the Sounds plated three runs in the 7th to take a lead they would never surrender. Outfielder Elian Herrera became the team's first baserunner of the night by reaching on a two-base fielding error by Memphis third baseman Jermaine Curtis. Hector Gomez followed Herrera by lifting a home run over the left-field wall to tie it up, 2-2, and extend his season-best hit streak to eight games. The dinger is Gomez's 10th of the season, one shy of matching the team lead. The Sounds took the 3-2 lead on newcomer Matt Clark's RBI double to left field, which scored Jason Rogers, who singled, but left Sean Halton to be tagged out at home plate. Infielder Pete Orr added an insurance run for Nashville with his solo homer to lead off the 8th inning, marking the final run of the game. The rally marks the first win in 32 opportunities for Nashville when trailing after the 6th inning. Reliever Alfredo Figaro (4-1) picked up the win for his two perfect innings behind Sounds starter Taylor Jungmann, who allowed Memphis two runs in five innings of work. Closer Jeremy Jeffress notched his third save for the club, inducing double-play balls in both the 8th and 9th innings to strand Redbirds runners. Memphis grabbed an early 1-0 lead on the Sounds in the 1st inning, when Shane Robinson scored on a groundout after his lead-off single. He moved to second base on a wild pitch from Jungmann and took third on a groundout. Memphis doubled its lead in the home half of the 5th inning on a pair of two-out knocks. Tommy Pham hit a triple to the right-field corner and was driven home by Stephen Piscotty's single to left. Redbirds starter John Gast used 61 pitches to retire 17 consecutive Sounds batters in his rain-shortened start. The game went into a 20-minute rain delay prior to the start of the 4th inning, and paused for a 36-minute hiatus in the top of the 6th. The Sounds will take on the Redbirds again on Wednesday. RHP Michael Blazek (1-3, 4.44) will take the hill for Nashville opposite Memphis' LHP Tim Cooney (8-5, 3.94). Sounds broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5 The Game. Nashville Boxscore I've found it very hard to get excited about Taylor Jungmann at all since I was so vocal against the draft pick from the start. Now that he's one of us I keep hoping he'll turn a significant corner like Nelson has, I guess we'll have to see how it turns out. He was alright tonight giving up 5 hits but not walking a batter, the 2 runs he allowed in 5 IP actually lowered his ERA. Nashville Recap Nashville Gameday

Kernels crack 19 hits to beat Rattlers 15-5 Wisconsin drops third straight game By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels banged out nineteen hits and defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 15-5 on Tuesday night at Perfect Game Field. JD Williams led the way by going 4-for-4 with four runs and four RBI for the home team. Wisconsin briefly held a 2-1 and tied the game 3-3, but the Kernels offensive onslaught was too much to overcome in this game. The Kernels (37-50 overall, 6-11 second half) took the lead in the bottom of the first inning with an unearned run. Ryan Walker singled with one out and Chad Christensen reached on an error when his potential inning-ending double play ball was misplayed. A two-out single by Bryan Haar drove in Walker. Wisconsin (45-42, 9-9) went in front with a home run in the top of the second inning. Dustin DeMuth was hit by a pitch from Kernels starter Lewis Thorpe. Taylor Brennan followed with a two-run home run to right and the Rattlers were up 2-1. Wisconsin had two one with one out and were looking for more in the second, but Thorpe kept the Rattlers from scoring another run in the frame. Williams put the Kernels back in front with a two-run homer off Tristan Archer in the bottom of the second. Jason Kanzler started the inning with a double. Then, Williams launched his first home run of the season and the Kernels had a 3-2 lead. The Timber Rattlers scratched out a run in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game. Brennan walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Rafael Neda's grounder to first was misplayed for an error that put runners on the corners with no outs. Jose Pena grounded into a 6-4-3 double play and Brennan scored the tying run. Cedar Rapids went up one more time in the bottom of the fourth by sending eight men to the plate and scoring four runs. Williams and Tanner Vavra started the inning with consecutive singles. John Murphy doubled off the wall in left to send Williams home for a 5-4 lead. Omar Garcia made a spectacular catch in left-center for the second out of the inning to rob Walker of extra bases, but Vavra scored from third on the sacrifice fly. The Kernels added to their lead in the inning with an RBI single by Chad Christensen and an RBI double by Mitch Garver. Chris Razo came on to get the final out of the inning. Michael Ratterree knocked in a run in the top of the fifth inning with a single to get the Rattlers back to within four. The Kernels got to Razo for three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The first run scored on a throwing error by Razo. Walker doubled in two runs later in the inning for a 10-4 lead. Zach Quintana took over in the bottom of the sixth and got the first out of the inning. The next three batters reached to load the bases. Williams singled to center to drive in a run and an error on the play let a second run score for a 12-4 advantage. Brennan knocked in his third run of the game with a single in the top of the eighth and the Rattlers were within 12-5. But, the Kernels added three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Williams picked up his fourth hit of the night with an RBI double. Vavra chipped in with his third hit, an RBI single. Walker capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly for his fourth RBI of the night. The Timber Rattlers have lost three straight games for the first time since May 20-22 and are back to .500 in the second half for the first time. Tuesday also marked the first time Wisconsin had allowed ten or more runs in a game since the final game of the first half when they lost 13-2 at Quad Cities. Game two of the series is Wednesday night. Clint Terry (1-2, 3.77) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Kernels have named Ryan Eades (5-8, 6.37) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 6:35pm. The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM and IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. HOME RUNS: WIS: Taylor Brennan (10th, 1 on in 2nd inning off Lewis Thorpe, 0 out) CR: JD Williams (1st, 1 on in 2nd inning off Tristan Archer, 0 out) WP: Brandon Bixler (5-4) LP: Tristan Archer (3-4) TIME: 2:56 ATTN: 2,424 Wisconsin Boxscore Most of the time I'm torn when I have something going on and won't get to listen to a game, craptastic efforts like tonight make it much easier to be away from a radio broadcast... my goodness. The Rattlers had almost as many errors (4) as runs (5)... At least Taylor Brennan (2-3,HR,BB) had a heck of a game. Come back and get 'em tomorrow boys. Wisconsin Recap

Bad news for the Cardinals: Wacha & Garcia to the DL
TheCrew07 replied to Dead Simmons's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
That's a bit over the top. Injuries to pitchers are going to happen, the only disappointment is Miller and this isn't the first time in his career that his control disappeared. Martinez is only 22 and is sporting a 3.91 ERA with a K/9 of 7.8, I'd take that in a heart beat. Wacha put up 2.79 ERA in his 15 starts so far this season, yes he's hurt, but he'll be back. Gonzales is a finesse lefty but he'll likely up being a nice back of the rotation type like Garcia before him. Gonzales made the jump all the way from AA, that's a tall order for any pitcher, but especially one without "stuff". Alex Reyes and Rob Kaminsky are the next 2 young guns coming through. Reyes profiles like a #2 and is probably a 2017 debut guy at the earliest, Kaminsky like a #3 with a similar debut season. I'd definitely swap the 23 year old Miller who has given up 49 runs so far this season for the 30 year old Estrada who has have given up 60 and not even think twice. If it doesn't work out for Miller at least you have a power arm option for the bullpen. Last but not least let's not forget 24 year old Trevor Rosenthal and 25 year old Seth Maness who are anchoring the bullpen. They have plenty of youth performing very well. -
This reminded me that Benjamin Onyshko still hasn't signed, he's the last player I'd really want from the 2014 draft class, mostly because we don't have enough lefties and one can always dream on a HS player picking up 2-3 MPH. One of the articles I read said that he was leaning towards going to college but I'm still hopeful. To answer your question I'm not sure, he didn't sign right away, but I would expect him to start pitching sometime here after Medeiros.

2014 Regular Season Divisional Prospect News
TheCrew07 replied to TooLiveBrew's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
1) Baseball America tends to rank pitchers on their ultimate ceiling (which is basically what I do as well), not how close they are to MLB, though that is taken into consideration. Stephenson's control has disappeared but his pure stuff is still some of the best in the minor leagues, He's a guy I'm keeping a close eye on. 2) Pretty much everyone uses the MLB rookie qualifications. -

Joantgel Segovia is hitting .417 through 23 games which is fantastic. However his SLG is lower than his OBP so his OPS was still sub .900 coming into the game, not that the .886 OPS coming into the game was a problem but with a .385 AVE at the time it's nearly impossible not to have a .900 OPS. He has just 3 XBH out of his (now) 40 hits... but he's listed at 6' 1" and 175lbs. There's likely room on that frame to fill out some and find power as he progresses, as it stands his hit tool appears to be extremely exciting.

Sounds Suffer Tough Loss In Series Opener In Memphis Redbirds Plate Two In Bottom Of Ninth To Steal 2-1 Victory Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/3/0/78648830/cuts/Jimmy_Nelson_805_2_Large_oivj6akn_x7xrw46m.jpg (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to steal a 2-1 victory against the Nashville Sounds on Monday evening at AutoZone Park in the opener of a four-game series. The late Memphis rally, which came against Donovan Hand in his second inning of work in the contest, erased a chance for top Brewers prospect Jimmy Nelson to pick up his league-leading 11th victory following another brilliant pitching performance. Nelson, who took a no-decision following his 16th quality outing in 17 trips to the hill for Nashville this season, extended his scoreless innings streak to 22 with seven scoreless frames, limiting Memphis to four hits while walking two and striking out four during his 83-pitch effort. The right-hander lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.46 with his seven goose eggs in the contest. Nashville (48-48) fell to 18-26 in road games this season as it suffered its eighth last at-bat loss. The Sounds have held a lead in 18 of their 26 road defeats. Shortstop Hector Gomez, who went 2-for-4 to extend his season-best hitting streak to seven games, broke up a scoreless deadlock in the top of the sixth when his one-out RBI single followed Elian Herrera's hustle double on a ball up the middle. Gomez is batting .433 (13-for-30) over his hit streak. Memphis starter Zach Petrick matched Nelson's effort with an outstanding outing of his own. The right-hander held the Sounds to just one run on six hits while fanning six in his seven frames of action. The Sounds missed chances to add an insurance run in the eighth and ninth against Memphis reliever Eric Fornataro, stranding a runner in scoring position in each frame as the right-hander kept it a 1-0 game. Hand (1-5) worked around a pair of baserunners in a scoreless eighth before running into trouble in the ninth, when he suffered a blown save and took the loss. Xavier Scruggs led off the Memphis ninth with a single and advanced to second when Greg Garcia laid down a bunt that was mishandled by first baseman Matt Clark, allowing both runners to remain safe on the play. Pinch-hitter Jermaine Curtis followed with a ground ball deep in the hole at second base, where Pete Orr attempted to make a play at the plate but his throw was late as Scruggs hustled in with the tying run. After an Audry Perez grounder erased Garcia at the plate, Luis Mateo ended the game with an RBI infield single that gave Memphis a 2-1 win. The teams continue the series with a 7:02 p.m. matchup on Tuesday. Right-hander Taylor Jungmann (4-5, 5.55) will toe the slab for the Sounds to face Memphis southpaw John Gast (2-2, 9.43). Nashville Boxscore I disagree with the premise of the article, this game wasn't stolen as much as it was given away. Jimmy Nelson wasn't as dominant from a SO perspective as he's been but was still exceedingly effective. Donovan Hand should have had his 5th consecutive scoreless appearance, he's not a 2 inning guy at this point but Sweet has been leaning heavily on the pen. He needed 4 relievers to get through 3 innings yesterday and you gotta believe even though Jeffress had pitched 2.1 innings he could have closed it down one more time in the 9th. Torts did a really good job via some Fangraphs articles explaining the Super 2 situation in that thread linked above, but with the old 17% Nelson would be up already. With the new CBA it's now the top 22% of 2-3 year players to qualify for super 2. edit. And yes, why on earth did Sweet try to push Hand 2 innings when he's been struggling much of the season?

I believe that was actually from Friday's game. Chris had me all all confused because during both doubleheader games on Sunday he was mentioning "yesterday's game" which was of course postponed and the reason they played a double header on Sunday in the first place. I must have checked the boxscores for Saturday at least 3 times during the double header to make sure I didn't miss posting a summary from Saturday.

Cubs Trade Samardzija and Hammel to Oakland A's
TheCrew07 replied to Eye Black's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Sure he said it but he was wrong. The Rays traded for Kazmir(2004), Garza(2007), Jackson(2006) in addition to developing Shields out of their system. That was a 4 year span but the point is that they traded for 3/5ths of their World Series rotation and if you can identify good targets, trading for younger pre-arby pitchers is the way to go. All of those guys were later flipped as their farm system started churning out better pitchers... young impact pitching is the gift that keeps on giving. -
Sounds Take Series With 10-6 Win Nashville's Halton Goes 4-for-5 with 3 RBIs; Clark Drives In Four Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/4/0/79839640/cuts/MPS_8489_Large_nyo55ydw_cy7v1t6p.jpg (MIKE STRASINGER ) ROUND ROCK, Texas - The first-place Nashville Sounds (48-43) picked up their third straight series win by offing the Round Rock Express in Sunday night's series finale, 10-6. The Sounds jumped out to an early 3-0 lead courtesy of newcomer Matt Clark, who drove a three-run two-out double over right fielder Engel Beltre's head to mark his first hit with the club. Clark's at-bat was preceded by an infield error to put Eugenio Velez on first, a two-out walk to Jeremy Hermida, and a fielding miscue that allowed Sean Halton to reach base on an infield single with no one covering first base. Clark finished with three hits and four RBIs. Halton, 4-for-5, added to Nashville's lead with his single in the 3rd inning which scored Jason Rogers, who reached base on balls. Catcher Shawn Zarraga, 2-for-3, made it a 5-0 game with his bases-loaded sacrifice fly. Shortstop Hector Gomez, 3-for-5, hit a double in the 4th inning to extend his season-best hit streak to six games. He currently holds the team's longest active streak. Gomez came around to score on a single from Halton for a six-run advantage. Gomez hit his second double of the game in the 7th inning to plate Nashville's seventh run. Then in the 8th, the Sounds scored three with consecutive RBI singles from Halton, Clark and Zarraga. Nashville has now scored five runs or more in 10 of its last 11 victories. Sounds starting pitcher Ariel Pena (5-6) turned in six innings for Nashville, firing a season-high 10 strikeouts en route to his fifth win of the year. Pena ran into trouble in the 4th inning, during which four runs came across, including a two-base run-scoring wild pitch. Reliever Arcenio Leon delivered a scoreless 7th inning for Nashville, before Round Rock plated a pair of runs in the 8th up against Brent Leach, who loaded the bases to open the frame. Jose De La Torre stepped in to offer a bases-loaded walk and then a one-out sacrifice fly. Jeremy Jeffress closed out the 8th and 9th innings to pick up his second save. The Sounds will continue their road trip in Memphis on Monday against the Redbirds (AAA-Cardinals). RHP Jimmy Nelson (10-2, 1.56) will take the hill for Nashville opposite Memphis' LHP Tyler Lyons (2-1, 5.35). Broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5 The Game. Nashville Boxscore The Ariel Pena rollercoaster ride continues... it will be interesting next season when both he and Johnny Hellweg are out of options. Will they make effective relievers? Quite the game for the offense, Shawn Zarraga's renaissance as a player continues... Caleb Gindl (playing CF in this one) only has 2 hits in his last 10 games. Jason Rogers is only 6-33 thus far in AAA, hopefully he gets his feet underneath him soon. Sean Halton's big day pushed his AVE up to .294 but even though he's almost hitting .300 his OPS is only .770. It's really too bad he doesn't have much power since he's limited to the corners but regardless he's hitting .462 over his last 10 games. Nashville Recap Nashville Gameday
