  1. I take your point. But the Pirates are really bad. I don't think they care if they are trading in January, May, or June. They know they aren't going to compete. The A's, however, will likely wait to see how the season plays a bit more before auctioning off pieces.
  2. That is a pretty good full image of Brantley. He doesn't look that small/skinny. I have to think he is going to develop some power with that frame.
  3. No surprise - LaPorta wins a player of the week honor. Southern League Matt LaPorta, Huntsville .526 (10-19), 9 R, 4 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 3 BB, 5 SO, 0 SB, 1.211 SLG It took LaPorta all of a month to establish himself as one of the Southern League's most prolific hitters. Though this represents his first full season in the Minors, even veterans are finding it hard to stop the Stars' outfielder. LaPorta appears to like Southern hospitality as he made himself entirely at home in Montgomery's Riverwalk Stadium during Huntsville's five-game set with the Biscuits. LaPorta quickly grabbed the spotlight, hitting three home runs in the first two games, including two in Thursday's 4-2 win, collecting four RBIs in each contest. The Biscuits would battle back to win the next two games, holding LaPorta hitless on Saturday. However, the first round selection doubled twice Friday driving in two, and scored following each of his three singles Sunday to lead the charge in Huntsville's 11-3 win.
  4. I am surprised by how many are upset with our position players. Hardy, Hall and Weeks are all slumping right now. But I have no doubt that our offense is potent enough to win. Now, if you want to argue about pitching staffs - you have a point. In my opinion, you need two #1 pitchers to be a real playoff threat. Sheets and Yovanni would have been great. But Sheets and Suppan are not going to carry a team in October. I do agree that Weeks and Hardy are definately going to be talked about this offseason. Weeks has never lived up to his potential. Hardy is already in arbitration and the Brewers haven't even discussed a long term deal. They could certainly be moved. The only problem is our best two prospects play OF/3B/1B. Think Bill Hall will switch positions again? p.s. Escobar does have 6 errors already in Huntsville.
  5. I am pretty sure Asians love Milwaukee. http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2004/Jul-11-Sun-2004/photos/hoops.jpg
  6. I haven't heard anyone from the Brewers mention that. In fact, I think Gwynn, Kapler and Gross all playing CF during the Cameron suspension without Corey Hart playing CF once speaks volumes. Corey probably could play CF. But the Brewers haven't really done much to move in that direction.
  7. If we had taken that approach with Braun - Braun would not have reached the big leagues until 2009! And currently, both LaPorta and Gamel are both outhitting the pace Braun set at AA. If you can hit at Huntsville, you can hit in MLB. The only real question is their defense and where to put them.
  8. DOA - you seem to think it is unwise to ever trade for starting pitching. Beckett has worked out great for the Red Sox. (And they gave up Hanley Ramirez!) Haren is working great for Arizona. Schilling worked out great for Boston. Santana seems to be doing just fine with New York. Volquez is playing great in Cincinatti. I don't think Atlanta has regretted Hudson. That is just recent history. I would imagine that many, many instances of teams trading prospects for #1 starters that have benefited both teams. I can't think of any instance where trading for a #1 pitcher has failed. (Maybe Mulder - though the Cardinals did win the World Series in 2006) Trading prospects for #3 and #4 pitchers is a bad idea. Just a thought, since everyone seems to think Lincecum would be a great addition - how about someone head over the a SF Giants message board and ask what they would want in return.

  10. I hate the idea of trading Hart, but Gopher's logic is pretty impeccable. It would take two top prospects (LaPorta & Escobar) to get simliar value to what Hart could draw. Plus, by trading Hart instead of LaPorta & Escobar we would be trading away 3 1/2 years of Hart - but maintaining 6 years of LaPorta and Escobar. And while I love Hart, he does have an adaquate replacement in LaPorta waiting in the wings. FTJ also has a good point that Hart is very possibly the CF of the future. That may be true, but he hasn't played a single game in CF this season. The Brewers seem pretty content with him in RF. (I always thought he was a better CF than Gross, but Gross always got the starts in CF) But, if the Brewers were to trade Hart they would be able pick up the option on Cameron for next year. That means we wouldn't need a new CF until 2009. (Assuming you hate Gwynn as a starting CF) By that time we could have someone else emerge in our system (Brantley), or move Braun to CF after two years in LF, or find a new CF on the free agent market. Bottom line for me - if a Lincecum type player becomes available, you go get him.
  11. I am pretty sure they are already talking about switching to the grass/turf combination they is being used at Lambeau Field.
  12. I would imagine it is a lot of work. But having outdated information doesn't help anyone. I always thought it would just be easier to link to their MILB.com player profile. Then they would be updated daily.
  13. I don't think trading for a Rental Pitcher is a likely scenario. Most GM's seem to have figured out that you don't trade prospects for #3 type pitchers. There isn't much of a difference between a Vargas-type pitcher (#5) and a Villanueva-type pitcher (#3). No way would I trade Laporta/Gamel or any other high prospect for a rental. However, I think any time you can add an ace - you pay the price. I really wish the Brewers had been aggressive in going after Bedard or Haren. You need top quality pitching to win champsionships. We have unfortunately lost our only year with both Sheets and Gallardo. If any pitcher is acquired, it needs to be a bondafide ace - with years remaining on his contract. I am really excited about LaPorta and Gamel - but if any young studs become available (Lincecum for example) go get them so that we can pair that player with Gallardo next year. There are only so many #1 pitchers. Bottom line - do you really want to head in to 2009 with Gallardo, Villanueva, Parra, Suppan and Bush as your starters? We need one more stud pitcher. (Of course, you could always gamble with Harden)
  14. I feel horrible for Yovanni. He seems like a great kid. I mean, he was pretty frustrated about his other knee injury. And to get up and pitch again when your team was taking on the Cubs...
  15. I don't think his continued pitching had anything to do with it. The only way the Brewers are legitimate playoff threats now is to swing a deal for another front line starters. This was the only year we were going to have Yovanni and Sheets together. Ouch.
  16. Gallardo is out for the season. The Cubs might end up playing some games at Miller Park. Bad day.
  17. John Donovan at SI.com in his weekly power rankings. (BTW, the Brewers are #4) And, two, if I had the power to knock the Cubs down in SI.com's Ballpark Rankings, I would. In a second. You see those dippy Wrigley Field fans pelting Milwaukee left fielder Ryan Braun with garbage? No. 8 in Fan IQ, my eye.
  18. YEAH! I have no idea why I get so excited for a new Power 50 - since hanging around the minor league forum will give you a pretty good impression of everything, but it still is a fun new read. Brantley is still listed as a LF? I hope Mark Rogers is on the same path as Parra. I would assume if he pitches 100 innings this year he would have to jump back into the top 10. Bryson went down 3 spots? And Tyson down 1 spot? Cain, Brewer and Ford are all pretty disappointing so far. But then, I suppose sometimes you just draft "potential" and hope for the best. Zach Jackson's time with the Brewers appears pretty limited.
  19. Well said. Turnbow is a mess right now. But if he has a month or two in AAA to really work on a few things - he could still be useful. We just can't let him "figure it out" anymore in MLB. Always a Dillon fan, but I am surprised they didn't grab a LH bat instead of Dillon.
  20. Mitch Stetter is my hero. Seriously, he has been very impressive. This is the second time he came into a game to clean up Turnbow's mess. Stetter performance on Sunday (Bases loaded by Turnbow with no outs - Stetter stranded all of them) was amazing.
  21. I made it to the end. I knew Turnbow was going to get a chance to pitch - and I really wanted to see how that worked out. (Guess that answered my question) Plus, we've been hitting pretty well. I wanted to see if we could keep it up.
  22. Gamel has the most total bases with 70(!), the next closest is LaPorta with 56. Gillespie is actually have a really good start as well. He kinda gets lost with LaPorta and Gamel crushing the ball.
  23. Sorry Turnbow. It's over. If anyone needs to spend some time in the minor leagues to work on a few things - it's you. Not Bush.
