  1. In regards to Covance studies - most of them have happy endings and they pay very well. However, I had a friend who did a pretty long one in Madison years ago. He ended up in the Hospital in really bad shape for a couple days. And I mean really bad shape. Trust me, the only thing in this life worth a darn is your health. Don't risk it by selling yourself to science.
  2. I'm giving up Brewerfan.net. What?!?
  3. There are other things you can get paid to donate other than plasma. I'm just saying...
  4. Didn't he actually slip and fall twice last year? The game you are likely thinking of was Labor Day. Houston v Milwaukee. Sheets v Oswalt. Was a very entertaining game - until we COMPLETELY fell apart at the end. That was also the game were Estrada was only willing to move his glove about two inches to prevent a pass ball from scoring in the winning run.
  5. While you are correct that the MLB players union is very strong - you have to remember that the players being drafted are not members of the MLB players union. So the more teams pay draft prospects, the less money remains for players who are part of the MLB union. (Players already with contracts) So you could argue that a draft slot/cap would actually create more money for MLB players. However, everything I have read states that the union isn't willing to give into anything that resembles a salary cap. They don't want to be subject to later arguements such as "The draft has a salary cap - why can't the MLB teams?" For one or two years I completely agree. However, the whole "slot" process is really a nod & wink agreement between the owners. They all agree to keep paying slot - and prospects salaries are kept in check. Plain economics tell us that in the long run contributing an extra 3 million per season wouldn't help the Brewers. As I stated before, if we do - everyone will start doing it. And if everyone is paying an extra 3 million into the draft no one has an advantage. The teams just cost themselves more money. Hence, the owners all agreed to keep salaries under control by paying slot. (With the obvious exceptions of a few teams)
  6. I was thinking he might have #1/#2 potential if he gets traded to the Nationals.
  7. I've tried to harp about this before. I like the idea of paying slot. I think the slot pay should be increased. (I believe it actually went down 10% last year?) And I think everyone should be FORCED to pay according to slot - similar to the NBA. The only advantage built into MLB for smaller market teams is the ability to build through the draft. If the Yankees and Red Sox are able to outspend everyone, they will end up with the top prospects every single year - regardless of where they are picked. The players will just hold out knowing that the Yankees or Red Sox will pay more. I think the Brewers are afraid to pay over slot because once we do - everyone does. And if everyone does, there is no competitive advantage. All it does then is drive up the price of the players for everyone. Only the players win.
  8. Ah, but here is the catch. Shaq isn't good anymore! Marion might be one of the top 10 players in the league. (That may seem like a stretch, but if you ever watched Phoenix without Amare - you would have said Marion was just as good. Marion just didn't work as a 3rd wheel.) Marion will have a shot at posting 20 ppg and 10 rpg as a member of the Heat. Shaq will be lucky to post 15 ppg and 8 rpg. (And that is if he is healthy!) However, since I love D. Wade. I am really happy for the Heat. They will likely have a high draft pick, D. Wade and Marion to build around going forward. They went from Salary Cap hell to a good chance to rebuild before Wade is too beat up to compete. (Too bad they have Mark Blount for two more years)
  9. Sounds like you know everything you need to know about the NBA to me! This is such a horrible trade for the Sun - I am stunned. Marion was unhappy with the Suns. And Banks was overpaid. I can see why they wanted to get rid of them. (Although, Marion is still an all-star caliber player. He just wants to be the focus a litttle more - he doesn't like sharing with Amare) How were the Bucks not involved in these trade talks!?! (Of course, I said the same thing when Gasol was traded for peanuts) But taking Shaq back is the worst fit in the history of the world! He can't run. He's always hurt. (And is currently) And they already have an all-star center! This is the same team (The Suns) who have given away their first round picks the past few years because they are too cheap to sign them. They sold Loul Deng because they didn't want to pay him - and rookie are cheap in the NBA! They also sold two first round picks this past year! And now they take on a 2 year commitment at $20 million per season!?!?! Good lord. Makes me feel better about the Bucks. (Well, maybe not)
  10. Can I ask what makes you think his clubhouse issues are overblown? I mean, unless you are in the club house - how could you possibly have any idea? I firmly believe that Estrada was a significant club house cancer. I think pretty much every pitcher, batter and coach didn't think much of him. The proof, in my opinion, is the very low one year offer he had to settle for from the Nationals. We might not know exactly why, but it is very clear that teams wanted nothing to do with him.
  11. They are both so horrible it can't even be quantified. But then, Herb Kohl runs the entire team the same way. Just hire a bunch of nice guys who can't do their job very well. I can't stand listening to McGlocklin. If I hear him laugh one more time - I am going to kill someone.
  12. I like Tom's/BA significantly better, but then - the Power 50 hasn't been updated in awhile. I guess my biggest agreement is that Bryson and Tyson, while young, are two of our better pitching prospects. The Scarpetta bandwagon has been gathering a lot of steam lately as well. Looking at that list, we have a lot of players that need to show something this year. Lots of raw talent that needs to start performing to justify their rankings. (Brewer & Jeffress)
  13. That makes me what to bust out my Dillon avatar again! (But I gotta stick with Gamel) I spent a significant amount of time before the Cameron acquisition arguing that Dillon would be an adequate 3B, allowing us to move Braun to LF. A lot of the projections have Dillon with an OPS of .800+ In terms of his PA, I wonder if part of that might be before the Cameron signing. Without Cameron, I think Dillon would have gotten that many PA shifting between 3B, 2B, 1B, and LF as the primary backup. With Cameron, he is going to lose at least 100 PA.
  14. Rogers' value is is pretty low. He has barely been healthy. And he has had significant control problems. Yes, stuff does trump production in the minors. But he it isn't just his lack of control - it is also that he is hurt. You combine those two... Jeffress is overrated by this board. He throws hard. He has no real secondary pitch at this point. And has been busted twice(!) for smoking dope. Look what the Mets got for Milledge. While not on the same level, Jeffress definately has some character issues that drive down his value. (And Milledge was/is significantly better than Jeffress) Gamel is great. Onto the original topic...the Indians will be close enough to make a run at the playoffs. So this is completely moot. However, your offer would have to be significantly better than two 1st round draft picks to get Sabithia.
  15. I should have pointed out that Keith Law also has an insider blog listing his top-5 prospects in each organization. 1. LaPorta 2. Parra 3. Escobar 4. Salome 5. Jeffress I guess he isn't too worried about the suspensions handed out to Salome and Jeffress. I can't imagine not having Gamel on that list. His quote on Jeffress... Jeffress is a one-pitch guy who's athletic and has decided that he'd rather smoke dope than play pro baseball. He's not a top 50 prospect - that is INSANITY. He's the new Pete Stonard.
  16. Keith Law pointed out in his rankings that Parra still has a somewhat unusual delivery that requires some effort. So most evaluators believe that enhances his injury potential. Callis of Baseball America also ranked Parra as a #3 starter, which seems to be the general feel. However, Callis did point out that a #3 starter in MLB means that there are only about 60 pitchers better than you. That is pretty impressive. Not sure where to post this tidbit, but Callis is a pretty big Braun supporter. In his last chat, he stated several times that he would take Jay Bruce over Ryan Braun. That is some very high praise for Bruce.
  17. Interleague records 2007 versus 2006 Attendance - 2007: 8,795,939 vs. 2006 8,592,482 Att. average - 2007: 34,905 vs. 2006: 34,097 AL win % - 2007: .544 vs. 2006: .611 NL win % - 2007: .456 vs. 2006: .389 AL batting - 2007: .268 vs. 2006: .283 NL batting - 2007: .281 vs. 2006: .261 Sorry if that isn't formatted very well.
  18. I am pretty confident one of our pitchers will pitch all of spring training before developing some sort of ailment that lands them on the DL. You can always stash players away for a few weeks with fake injuries. Capuano - "Sore Back" Bush - "Headache" Vargas - "Menstrual Cramps" Lets face it, there are plenty of ways to keep more than 25 players on the opening day roster.
  19. As soon as Liriano was declared out for the 2007 season, they should have traded Santana. They weren't going to win last year either. Trading away two years of Santana would have gotten some incredible offers. And not to pile on too much, but comparing Gwynn to Gomez is really funny.
  20. Looks like Washington overpaided by about $1.5 Million
  21. It's got to be chicken. Everything already taste like it! Honestly, Chicken can pretty much taste however you want it to depending on how you cook it.
  22. Nice to hear he is feeling better. But honestly, he really sounds like someone who only knows how to play baseball. I doubt many doctors would suggest he try to continue in that career path. But it's what he is. And it is what he knows how to do.
  23. Torres. I think he leads the 2008 Brewers in saves.
  24. Angelos has yet to approve the trade. I figured Seattle was going to have to part with at least two from the group of Jones, Morrow and Clement. Seems like a good deal for Seattle. What would a similar offer be from the Brewers? I mean, I know we have starting pitching - but adding Bedard would be a HUGE upgrade.
