  1. Ugh...kind of a crappy game all around. Manny just couldn't locate anything, though, and it's hard to beat a team that's on fire (and has the best team ERA in the league) when your starting pitcher can't locate anything consistently. His 6 strikeouts were more a result of him being wild than him being effective, IMO. It stinks seeing the Brewers come up empty a couple times when they had chances to tie the game, but Hart absolutely crushed that pitch to right center and I think it could've been off the wall at Miller Park. It doesn't help that Juan Pierre was sprinting out there to track it down. Things could've been a lot worse if the Dodgers didn't leave the bases loaded after Riske fell behind 2-0 when he came in, though. Broxton's just a beast, too...I'm not a huge fan of overvaluing closers, but he's a good one when he's on, and he can go multiple innings without breaking a sweat. He's the definition of a bullpen ace. Hopefully the Brewers can get a better start tomorrow and they can cool off the Dodgers. With how well LA is playing, I'm starting to think I'd be happy with getting one win and never seeing this team again this year.
  2. You've got to be kidding me. Go-ahead pinch-hit HR for Daryle Ward. He sure picked a good time to snap out of his season-long slump...ugh. Guess the Brewers have to win tonight with it looking like the Cards are going to win, too.
  3. Braun tomorrow, perhaps? Please? It's probably killing him that he's not able to play on the team's one trip to his hometown.
  4. I heard Kendall makes the perfect wingman because he calls a good game. Shouse can only close the deal on left-handed women.
  5. 9:40? Sweet merciful crap...why do the Dodgers start their games later than the Padres and Giants? Hopefully Manny can get a win tonight so we don't spend the rest of the series worrying about getting swept. The pitching match-ups are pretty unfavorable, but the Dodgers are still very beatable, even with Ramirez in that lineup. I can't wait for Manny to be Manny on the hill while he's pitching to Manny being Manny in the batter's box. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  6. Did I hear some "USA! USA! USA!" chants while everyone was waiting for Johnson's score? Awesome ending to the competition. Well worth staying up late, IMO. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  7. Nastia Liukin's got this one won...incredible last rotation. She had to be perfect to beat the slanted scoring, and she was. Hopefully Shawn Johnson can pull out the silver.
  8. China made it their sole mission to beat the United States in the medal count ever since they found out they'd get the 2008 games...they've spent millions (if not billions) of dollars in research and training the past 8 years. I remember stories coming out a couple years ago about China and Russia pooling their resources together in an attempt to take down the Americans in the Olympics...they don't screw around when it comes to this stuff. Edit: Of course, it helps to have the women's gymnastics all-around competition rigged, too. China's getting away with a ton of deductions, while the U.S. girls are being docked for making the same mistakes.
  9. http://www.theclasslist.com/sysfiles/faculty_files/home199_3060_7.jpg 2007 Division 4 Football state champs, West Salem Panthers. You might recognize our most famous alum http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif http://graphics.jsonline.com/graphics/sports/brew/img/may06/miller0513.jpg Girl's basketball team also had a run of 12 consecutive Coulee Conference championships that I believe was just snapped last season. We were pretty spoiled with good athletic teams every season and good academics.
  10. Phelps is just ridiculous. It didn't even look like the guy was trying. There was a cool feature on Phelps before the race -- essentially "how the perfect swimmer is built". He's 6'4 with a 6'7 wingspan, with size 14 feet and hands the size of dinner plates. They said his body isn't in proportion, either -- his legs are about as long as someone who's 6 feet tall, but he has the torso of someone who's about 6'8...I always thought his legs looked short, but I didn't know they were that short. They also said his knees and elbows are double-jointed.
  11. I just think this shows how little the "old school" GM's like Jocketty think of a guy like Adam Dunn. I'm surprised he asked for that much in return...it's like Josh Byrnes threw him a bone with Owings, just so he wouldn't feel so bad about ripping him off.
  12. I wasn't expecting to win this game, anyway, and I was ecstatic when they were able to score that run in the 7th against Peavy. I was afraid of Sheets tiring, but Yost would've been blasted if he had taken out Sheets after 6 innings of 1-hit ball. The Padres weren't able to hit the ball out of the infield until that inning, and by the time Yost had a reliever warm, they had already taken the lead. I'm glad that Cameron had a very good series in his old ballpark, and it looked like knowing the dimensions of the outfield well paid off for the Brewers multiple times this series -- I cringe to think of how Hall or Gwynn would've handled some of those tough plays. Nix was impressive in the field, too, even if he was less so at the plate. Tough luck loss for Benny...if anyone other than Peavy was starting, this offense would've mustered more than a couple runs. Hopefully they can go into LA and take the series from the Dodgers. The pitching match-ups aren't exactly ideal (Billingsley-Lowe-Kershaw), but it's another good pitcher's park. The Dodgers have improved offensively since the Manny trade, but they're still a .500 team. Hopefully they can chase the starters early and go to work on the bullpen.
  13. Considering the other options, I don't have much problem with Nix hitting third. Hardy needed a day off, Cameron hits better in the bottom half of the order, and it definitely beats Bill Hall hitting third. I guess you could make an argument for moving Fielder and Hart up one spot each and hitting Nix 6th or something, but I don't think it would have much effect...Peavy's likely to pitch well regardless of what lineup he faces. Edit: Original post made no sense.
  14. The question now is if this game is Mota-proof. He gets the first out, so hopefully it is. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  15. "Big Shot?" "President of the Rickie Weeks Fan Club Mr. Akittell?" Judging from the comments to just this particular blog entry, Akittell just inserted some objective discussion by saying something along the lines of "Well, he's not as bad as everyone thinks he is." He never says "RICKIE WEEKS IS THE BEST 2B IN THE NL" or "WEEKS RULZ!!11!" or anything like that, and he gets saddled with the "President of the Fan Club" line. With every comment you get the feeling that he's talking down to his readers, like we're poor uneducated souls just because we don't get a press pass.
  16. Thanks, Casey..for some reason, I didn't know that they inducted some players with a generic cap, but I read up on some of the more famous cases on Wikipedia. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I agree that the "blank" hat would probably be the best option for Sheff, considering the amount of teams he's played for (and the amount of bridges he's burned).
  17. I won't say I'm happy with his production, especially when you consider the accolades he picked up in college. Weeks played in a small conference against weak competition in college, though, and was rushed through the Brewers' system. In that sense, I think the Brewers botched their handling of him, and we're seeing the results. It doesn't help, either, that he was thrown into the leadoff spot when he wasn't used to leading off -- it forced him to change his approach at the plate, and he's never looked comfortable up there in the leadoff spot. You're right in saying that Rickie should probably be better than his career numbers show at this point, but I also don't think he's been as horrible as a lot of people think, and he certainly doesn't deserve to get roasted in "It's big boy time" blogs by a writer who's supposed to be objective when covering the team.
  18. The funny thing is, TH shouldn't be expecting the second player in the draft to be above average. It's a total crap shoot. Greg Reynolds and Alex Gordon have also been disappointing in their short careers so far, Justin Verlander is having a horrible year, and there's plenty of below-average guys who have been taken #2 overall: http://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?overall_pick=2&draft_type=junreg The MLB draft isn't the NFL draft. You're not getting a sure thing when you pick at the top of the first round.
  19. TH's JSOnline blog would be a lot more readable if they shut down the comments section, but I did think it was a little weird that he didn't mention Weeks as one of the guys who have been hitting well during this hot streak...he made it sound like Fielder, Hart, and Cameron were the only guys really doing anything at all. And really, if Weeks wasn't hitting much better, suddenly Fielder's and Hart's RBI numbers over that stretch don't look so sexy. I do think there are a lot of people who unfairly hunt out things in an attempt to prove TH has a bias, but like Godspeed said, he's a bit of a dick when he responds to the comments. There's times when he does a good job of answering follow-up questions some people legitimately pose, but there's also many more times that he unnecessarily responds to the people who only comment to get a rise out of him. I know a lot of other papers don't even let the writers use the comment section, and I'm starting to think that would be the way to go for the J-S. Edit: I just read the actual comments, and the guy he's calling out didn't even take much of an accusatory tone -- it was TH that pretty much initiated everything. Witrado may be clueless and arrogant, but at least he doesn't start flame wars in his comments sections.
  20. Latrell Sprewell, maybe, but even Spree's antics ended up costing him in the long run. Sheffield's still a Hall of Fame player, despite his insanity. Speaking of the HOF, whose cap will he end up wearing once he gets inducted? He's played for Milwaukee, San Diego, Florida, Los Angeles, Atlanta, the Yankees, and Detroit, and he'll probably hit one more team before he finally retires. The longest he's stayed in one city is 4.5 years with Florida, and he did help them win their first World Series, so I guess he could go in as a Marlin.
  21. No pitcher for the Padres? That must mean Padres forfeit! Brewers win! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Haha...I must've started typing Baek's name and hit C instead of P. Although with that home run, you could argue he has better power than most catchers. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  22. I'd imagine Padre fans are interested in seeing how their prospects like Headley and Hundley play. This year is pretty much done for them, so at least they get to see what their young guys can do.

  24. Cubs/Braves has been rained out -- they'll play a day/night double header tomorrow. Tonight's scheduled pitchers will pitch the first game. Edit: wibadgers beat me to it. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif It must've been really bad in Atlanta if they didn't even bother trying to wait it out.
  25. (emphasis added) You said 'grit' on purpose, didn't you? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Wow, I didn't even notice that. Totally Freudian, I guess. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
