  1. It would be nice to get two comp picks for Lopez, but unless he signs with a bottom 15 team, I don't see it happening. Lopez likely just got Tony Graffanino'd. Perhaps the Brewers could trade him if he accepts arby...IIRC, the Padres did something similar a few years ago when Todd Walker was unexpectedly a Type A.
  2. Kind of related to this, but I wonder how much of this could be attributed as Hardy's fault. As has been mentioned, he didn't really do himself any favors on the field (in Milwaukee and in Nashville). Not only that, but wasn't there talk an offseason or two ago that Hardy preferred to go year-to-year with arby instead of signing a long-term deal with the Brewers? I wonder how much of this could've been avoided (from his perspective) if he had signed a three or four year deal before this season. Sure, he'd be delaying free agency, but he probably would've been making more money than he's in line for.
  3. With his next home run, Ryan Braun will reach the 100-HR mark. He continues to chase Albert Pujols/Ralph Kiner for the most home runs hit in the first three seasons of a career (114), but it doesn't appear he'll get there unless he goes on a huge tear. He could, however, catch Eddie Matthews (112), Mark Teixeira (107), and Joe DiMaggio (107). Some of the names Braun has already passed: Frank Robinson (98), Ted Williams (91), Mark McGwire (84), Ryan Howard (82). Granted, the numbers are a bit skewed since they only measure seasons by years and not games played, but Braun's about to join a pretty exclusive club, which is even more impressive considering that he got a late start his rookie year. I can't even imagine where he'd be if he didn't battle with the intercostal strain for the last couple months of last season. On another note, Prince's homer last night was career shot #150. With 118 RBI, his next run batted in will tie the career high he set in in 2007. He's only 9 RBI away from breaking the Brewers' single season RBI record.
  4. The word in Tampa was that this was a straight salary dump, as Kazmir's due a lot of money the next couple years and really wasn't pitching like he deserved that big extension. There was a column on the Tampa Tribune's website calling him the "Ace That Never Was" -- which is more than a little hyperbolic if you ask me -- but he struggled mightily this year (ERA way up, strikeouts down, strikeout:walk ratio down, etc.) so I wouldn't bet against him being hurt again. Sure, it would've been nice to have Kazmir, but the Brewers have already had bad luck when it comes to starting pitching injuries, and they don't need another guy who struggles to keep the pitch count below 100 in 5 innings. And even if the Brewers were interested, it takes two to tango -- right now there's no way of knowing if the two teams had talks, and even if they did, it's entirely possible that Thomas Friedman and his scouts preferred the Angels package. They sure seem happy with the return in Tampa: Sure, it's probably just their front office trying to calm the fanbase, but it wouldn't be the first time a team has taken a perceived lesser deal.
  5. Very nice job by the bullpen keeping the Bucs off the board after Manny left. Keep winning as many as possible and see where it leaves you after the season...it'd be nice to at least beat the Cubs for 2nd.
  6. Thanks, I didn't see that since they don't show you pregame on MLB.TV. Pretty impressive that DiFelice could throw a strike with the opposite hand, then.
  7. DiFelice bowls lefty? You learn something new every night. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  8. That's what I thought, but it was hard to tell with the picture quality I'm watching on. Still a monster shot. Nice piece of hitting by Esco there, too...nice to see him bounce back after a rough Reds series for him.
  9. Can't really tell on MLB.TV -- how close did that shot by Prince actually come to hitting the truck?
  10. I'm guessing the "gentleman's agreement" was more talk than anything, since the Yankees claimed Chris Carter yesterday when the Red Sox tried to pass him through to the Mets as a PTBNL to complete the Billy Wagner trade. I can't blame the Giants for blocking any possible trades, even if their direct competition (the Rockies) probably wouldn't have been interested, anyway. Better to be safe than sorry, especially when San Fran's been slipping further and further behind in the race.
  11. I got a kick out of Deadspin's commentary on Smoltz's first start with the Cards: Cardinals Bullpen Fixes John Smoltz in Five Minutes (August 24).
  12. The FoxSports link was updated to note that Kendall, Counsell, Cameron, and Looper all cleared waivers and can be traded anywhere if there are any takers. I'm still not entirely confident in another team being dumb enough to give up much for one month of production, but we'll see what happens.
  13. Brewers tie a season low, falling 5 games under .500 for the first time since 4-9....yeesh. It's especially painful given the ways they lost the first two games of this series, wasting a good start from Looper and a great 9th-inning rally in the opener.
  14. Esco goes 0-for-the-series...ouch. That last AB looked like an infield single to me, but it could've gone either way in real-time. Despite the recent struggles he really should keep playing 5 out of every 6 or 7 games, though.
  15. Alright, how about some more 9th inning magic? This series has been maddening, but at least every game's been close...it'd be nice to steal one.
  16. Here is the FoxSports link. This part of the article popped out at me, though: That's the first I've heard about Hoffman being interested in coming back, but it's sure nice to hear.
  17. A new uniform doesn't make me hate Scott Rolen any less. Ugh. Plenty of time left for the bats in this one, though.
  18. Nope.....I laughed out loud as well. And I thought lobster at a tailgate was a little over-doing it!Maybe he's just auditioning for the next season of Top Chef.
  19. I'm a bit torn on the Lopez compensation. It'd be great to get two comp picks instead of one for him, but at the same time, Lopez becoming a Type A might get him the Orlando Hudson/Juan Cruz treatment on the open market and he could end up having trouble finding work. If he does end up being a Type A, I'd be surprised if anyone who doesn't have their first rounder protected makes a run at him. Still, a second and a sandwich pick is probably better than just a sandwich pick.
  20. I'm watching MLB.TV on mute so I can't tell what Brian and Bill are saying about it, but apparently the "mandatory stretching session" this morning was an excuse to do some summer camp-type icebreaking activities? Hey, whatever helps you score 4 first inning runs, I guess. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Edit: Nice piece of hitting by Lopez, but not good to see him doubling over in pain and lifting that foot once he got to second. It'll be interesting to see if he can stay in.
  21. I am loving the new Bush facial hair. Sal Fasano would be proud.
  22. Buster Olney says that three NL clubs are seemingly very interested, and not-so-coincidentally, they're the top 3 teams in the NL wildcard race -- Colorado, San Francisco, and Florida. No one seems eager to claim him off waivers and pay him the $1 million or so he's still owed this year, though. Olney seems to think Colorado is the best fit for him, too.
  23. Oh boy, not another former Brewer. I do like the fact that we're getting a Bush/Rivera reunion, though. Hopefully the guys can get back to .500 at home and make it a happy afternoon for everyone here, because day game losses really stink up the rest of the day. Edit: PRINCE SMASH!
  24. I'm sure there won't be a shortage of interested parties with Hoffman, but given the possibility of him being a Type A free agent, I don't think he's going to be dealt unless Melvin can get the Phillies (or anyone else) desperate enough to match the value of the possible 1st/2nd rounder and a sandwich pick. For one month of Hoffman, I can't see another team doing it, though.
  25. Knowing some Red Sox fans and reading about him in Boston this year, it does seem like he still has his velocity, but has had next to no movement and seemed reluctant to throw any kind of breaking pitch (I've seen blog posts noting how he was throwing his fastball nearly 75% of the time -- obviously the kind of thing that can become predictable in the AL East). He's only worked into the 7th inning 4 times this year, and has never completed 7 innings in a start. In short, the Red Sox probably got tired of him completely falling apart whenever he got to the second or third time through the opposing lineup, and want to see what they have in their younger pitchers. Kind of funny how a couple months ago Boston was asking for the moon for him, though, only to ultimately get nothing for him.
