  1. I'm not usually a huge soccer fan, but the World Cup always manages to get me sucked in. Looks like a very favorable pool for the US considering what could've happened, and I get the feeling that first match against England will be huge. Lots of potential storylines for that match, especially if Beckham finds his way onto the England squad again, given the shaky relationship he's had with Landon Donovan this past year in LA.
  2. I think not being Jason Kendall had a lot to do with it. As for Zaun, sort of a "meh" signing but like others have said, at the very least he's a little better than Kendall while also being a little cheaper. Between this and the reports of Counsell being offered a deal today, at least it looks like Doug's not sitting on his hands waiting for pitching to get back to him. I can get behind doing the small fixes early so you know exactly what you have to address during the winter meetings.
  3. Quoting the MLB Trade Rumors post: Not a bad deal at all for the Red Sox. Sure, Scutaro was a Type A who was offered arby, but I'd be willing to bet that they went ahead and signed Scutaro once it was announced Wagner was signing with Atlanta and they'd be assured of at least one first round pick.
  4. If anyone's wondering what other teams did with their potential FA's, MLBTradeRumors has compiled a list and is updating it as decisions on arby come in. If I was a Dodger fan, I'd be pretty ticked off.
  5. McCalvy with the news. Disheartening to hear, even though it was expected. I still would've liked to see Lopez get offered, but given some of the other decisions to come down across the league today (Dodgers decline on Wolf, Yankees decline on Damon and Matsui, etc.) I'm guessing the Brewers aren't the only ones not willing to take chances. Let's keep all talk about the decision to decline arby in this thread, and I'll put a reminder here that this shouldn't turn into a Melvin venting thread. To disagree with the move is fine, but let's talk about why instead of just saying you think it's dumb.
  6. I'd be happy for BA if he got the "call-up" -- he did an excellent job during the playoffs once again this year and got rave reviews from media outlets that were at the same time criticizing Caray. Like bacon said, though, I'd be disappointed to have to go through the process again. If Anderson does go, I'd still be in favor of a Vin Scully-like radio/TV simulcast that has Uecker, Provus, and Schroeder just shooting the breeze all game long. It would be the best three hours on TV every night, IMO. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  7. Larry Dobrow never claims to be doing any reporting, and even pokes fun at his own "analysis" a few times ("Non-Helpful and Semi-Realistic Suggestions," etc.). With that said, I don't agree with everything he has to say -- others have targeted his idea of trading Gamel to Oakland for a B-grade reliever, I took more issue with his idea that the Brewers are paying Trevor Hoffman to be "the Michael Jordan of good guys." The Brewers are paying (and probably overpaying, but we'll see where the market goes) Hoffman to be a very, very good closer, but maybe he missed Hoffman's 2009 season. Who knows. I did like this line, though: One of the more accurate observations in the entire opinion piece, if you ask me.
  8. What a difference a day makes, huh? Looked pretty impressive against a Maryland team that has struggled in Maui but was expected to be in the Top 5 of the ACC, so beating them up is no small feat. Nice to pick up such a quality win early in the season, and playing like they did today makes me feel better about their chances in the Big Ten.
  9. Shelley Duncan chooses free agency over outright assignment to AAA from the Yankees. He hit .277/.370/.546 for AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Berry this year...might be an option for cheap power off the bench, or maybe a fit in right if Corey Hart isn't in future plans? Or am I just crazy? He's already 30, which probably contributes to his dominance of AAA pitching, but adding him would definitely make games against daddy's Cardinals interesting.
  10. Doesn't really surprise me. They don't have to trade him now and probably won't until they absolutely have to, unless someone comes along and offers them a Beckett-like deal. I don't think the Brewers have the firepower to pull a deal like that off right now, but it won't stop me from dreaming (and trying to put together a deal in OOTP). http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  11. Given the choice between Pavano and Davis/Washburn, I'd probably take a chance on Pavano. I wouldn't count on him to be anything other than the #5, though, and would prefer if they could get him on a similar deal to what they gave Looper last year -- something that gives them the option of opting out after one year just in case things go horribly wrong.
  12. Managed to find the guy who voted Jeremy Affeldt 10th: Andrew Baggarly, who explained his ballot in his blog.
  13. Yeah, the first thing I noticed when I looked at the table was that 3 people thought 9 other players were more valuable than Prince Fielder. I can understand why some might've gone with Howard (one guy's on a sub-.500 club, the other on the defending NL champs and the best team in the NL), and it looks like the voting between those two was extremely close other than the 8 votes outside the Top 5 for Fielder.
  14. From the BBWAA website, the breakdown: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th Points Albert Pujols, Cardinals 32 448 Hanley Ramirez, Marlins 15 5 3 3 2 3 1 233 Ryan Howard, Phillies 6 8 7 5 1 3 1 217 Prince Fielder, Brewers 5 9 7 3 1 3 1 3 203 Troy Tulowitzki, Rockies 3 6 5 5 5 1 1 172 Andre Ethier, Dodgers 2 3 2 5 4 5 3 113 Pablo Sandoval, Giants 1 2 5 5 6 1 4 89 Chase Utley, Phillies 2 2 1 5 4 3 1 84 Derrek Lee, Cubs 1 3 3 2 2 5 66 Matt Kemp, Dodgers 2 1 2 3 1 1 2 49 Ryan Braun, Brewers 3 1 2 4 6 43 Adrian Gonzalez, Padres 1 1 3 2 5 30 Todd Helton, Rockies 1 1 1 1 2 28 Chris Carpenter, Cardinals 1 2 1 2 1 25 Adam Wainwright, Cards 1 2 1 2 16 Matt Holliday,Cardinals 1 1 2 15 Jayson Werth, Phillies 1 1 10 Shane Victorino, Phillies 2 8 Tim Lincecum, Giants 1 1 2 8 Yunel Escobar, Braves 1 6 Mark Reynolds, D-backs 1 1 1 6 Joey Votto, Reds 1 4 Yadier Molina, Cardinals 1 3 Miguel Tejada, Astros 1 3 Huston Street, Rockies 1 2 Justin Upton, D-backs 1 2 Ryan Zimmerman, Nationals 2 2 Jeremy Affeldt, Giants 1 1 Chris Coghlan, Marlins 1 1 Brad Hawpe, Rockies 1 1
  15. He had Tommy John surgery back in 2007, but hasn't had problems with the elbow since. He's a relatively safe bet as far as young pitchers go. I'd have reservations about trading Gamel for Edwin Jackson, but I'd give him up in a heartbeat for Johnson, especially if he's only looking for 4/$40 at this point.
  16. Crazy that it seems like so long ago that the Brewers were going with the "Counsellino" platoon at third. I agree that it kind of reminds me of the Closser claim, even if McCalvy seems excited by the move, mentioning every positive waiver claim Melvin has made from Brady Clark to Casey McGehee.
  17. McCalvy's MLB.com article mentions that Rivera is arbitration-eligible this winter. I can't imagine Rivera getting that much in arby this winter, but in a scenario where this move might lead to him being non-tendered (not likely if there's no clear contenders for the starting job, but still possible), I guess any money that could be saved this offseason and put towards pitching could be useful.
  18. Can Brandon Jennings pitch?
  19. Proof of James being optimistic: Manny Parra is projected at a 4.59 ERA (and a FIP of 3.93). Kind of makes you temper your excitement of a Gamel-for-Jackson swap when you see that Bill James thinks Manny Parra will have a better 2010 than Jackson, doesn't it? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif If the Brewers are going to trade Gamel for Jackson, I would at least hope that Doug would be able to get another nugget coming back in the deal. It would be awesome to expand it to Jackson and Granderson, but I don't think the Brewers have the pieces that Detroit would be looking for.
  20. As bklyn said, Butler was the return for Gabe Gross. You may be thinking of Chris Cody, who the Brewers got from Detroit for Jose Capellan.
  21. It definitely does seem like he's intent on at least making it seem like he's trying...even things as simple as talking with John Lackey's agent go a long way. I wasn't expecting Looper back, even when McCalvy and Haudricourt seemed to think it was a lock the Brewers were going to pick up the option, but I do wish he pitched better while he was here. I didn't mind the signing too much when it was announced, and it's not like this was a big dollar mistake signing...he was an average guy making average money that just happened to pitch poorly for a season. At least he wasn't locked into a multi-year deal.
  22. The more I think about the possibility of Lackey coming to town, the more I like it, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up. There's still plenty of time for him to talk to other teams who have a lot more money to play with, and the long-term implications could be a little concerning, too. The money's probably there to pay Lackey this year with the recent cost-cutting moves (like McCalvy mentions on the MLB site), and next year Suppan comes off the books...like others have said, though, it's years 3-5 that would get me nervous, especially if they choose to backload the deal.
  23. It's interesting that Valentine keeps popping up as a candidate in these manager hunts, considering what happened that led to the Indians picking Manny Acta over him. The AP article noted that Acta got the job when he came into the interview incredibly prepared. Valentine lost it when he admitted he didn't study up on the Cleveland organization or the American League and said he wasn't even sure if he wanted the job...and this was the second interview. It may be an isolated incident, but I wouldn't be thrilled if he was mentioned as a serious finalist for my team, and I'd always be wondering if he really wanted to be there. He'd make most of the same mistakes any manager would, just with a few manufactured temper tantrums thrown in.
  24. Can't say I'm a huge fan of this trade, but perhaps Gomez will play a bit better if given the chance to play every day, as he claims in the latest JSOnline blog post. It would've been nice to get a pitcher for Hardy, but it's early in the offseason, and it's not like Hardy did a lot to help the Brewers get good value. I'm willing to wait to judge pitching additions as they come in, but as for this move, I can't say I'm a fan. Hopefully he proves me wrong.
  25. From what I remember, when Sabathia was here, Parra was constantly shadowing him and getting advice. That was only for a few months, though, so I can see your point...if Parra's going to have a mentor, it'd be nice to have him for more than half a season.
