  1. Wow, without Berkman in there that's one underwhelming lineup Houston's putting out. Hopefully Villa can be careful with Lee and Tejada and worry about getting everyone else out. Edit: Houston's feed keeps showing the replay of the play at the plate, and to be fair to Fischer, it took a near-perfect relay from Lee and Tejada to get Counsell. Lee hit the cutoff man perfectly and Tejada fired a bullet to the plate. I do agree that it was an unnecessary risk, though.
  2. I remember seeing Norris in the Triple A All-Star Game this year and coming away impressed with his (albeit short) outing. I'm not too optimistic about Villa's chances of keeping the ball in the park at the Juice Box, but he was surprisingly stellar in his last start. Putting some distance between the Brewers and the Astros during this series would be a great way to close out the road trip.
  3. Can we change the thread title? It looks like the Brewers claimed Rios and is very misleading. Take out the arrows as there has been no transaction and Toronto can still pull Rios back. Done and Done. There's speculation out here in New York that the Mets may be the team that claimed him, with eyes on having him long-term (with their 2009 season looking over, with all their injuries). They may have the financial flexibility to pull it off long-term, but considering they just traded for Jeff Francoeur it would be a little odd. Then again, Omar Minaya has made quite a few unconventional moves this year. It could also be the Giants, who were linked to Rios in all kinds of trade talks before the non-waiver deadline, IIRC. It'll be interesting to see if the Jays pull him back or try to work out a deal. Rios is still affordable right now, but long-term his contract combined with Vernon Wells' really ties their hands. Whoever the team is, I don't think we'll find out unless a deal is actually struck. Players get claimed and pulled back all the time in August, since a lot of GMs like to put most of their 25-man roster on waivers after July 31 just to see who they can deal. Edit: I noticed that there were two threads on this, so I just merged the two since both threads had good posts.
  4. Braun has to love hitting homers in LA...he absolutely crushed that one. Hopefully this big lead ends better than the one a few nights ago.
  5. Given the Hart situation, I can't say I dislike this lineup. Hopefully the Parra/Rivera connection continues to work well tonight, but Kershaw's going to be really tough -- he's coming off 8 shutout innings (4 hits) against the Cards. He's given up a total of 3 runs in his past 5 starts...I smell a (hopefully) low-scoring game.
  6. Very nice double play to get out of the bottom of the third. I was holding my breath every time Gonzalez took a hack there.
  7. It wouldn't be a Looper start without an unexpected offensive explosion, would it? Hopefully he didn't get too cold that inning.
  8. Nothing makes me happier than jumping out to a big league early in these ridiculously late West coast games. I'd love to get to bed at a reasonable time tonight. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  9. Looper should probably be hitting eighth instead of Kendall. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Love the way he made Gaudin hit the deck.
  10. The disparity between the Brewers and Packers in the late 90's and early 2000's was pretty big. Things could be worse for Pittsburgh -- they could be Cincinnati or Cleveland. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  11. I'm personally shocked that a baseball player would put something into his body to perform better. It's not like it's been going on since salaries skyrocketed or anything. For those wondering what Simmons was thinking, no column yet, but we have this tweet:
  12. It makes sense if he wanted to go down to work on his swing while the team was on the West coast, especially if he knew he wouldn't get more than a few plate appearances with the big league club. With any luck, this'll have the same positive effect sending Weeks, Bush, and Parra down has had in recent memory.
  13. And hey, they won a day game while they were at it. I wasn't able to watch (weather was way too nice to stay in where I am), but I was glad to see the result. It's huge to get back to .500 heading out west. Hopefully with some luck the road trip won't be too bad and they can be above .500 upon returning home.
  14. Andy LaRoche was a part of the Manny Ramirez/Jason Bay three-way deal last year, so I wouldn't count on him being moved for another few years. Doumit could easily be gone at next year's deadline if he can stay healthy and keeps putting up good offensive numbers, though. Guys like Zach Duke and Matt Capps could still go in the next couple days, too, and if Tom Gorzelanny didn't forget how to pitch he'd likely be on the block this year too.
  15. Apparently I have the MLB.TV package that causes my computer to freeze on every 3-2 pitch. Took me a few minutes to get back on to say that it feels good to have a lead again.
  16. Wait ... are you retroactively calling a game over before it ended. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gifhttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif I still had a small glimmer of hope for a Cleveland-style comeback in each of those games, but let's just say it's easier to feel optimistic about this one.
  17. Nice to see the offense put up a bit of a fight and Manny settle down after his first couple innings...this one's not over yet, which is probably all I can ask for after the past couple nights. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  18. With the new topic in the big league forum about the deal, I'll close this "rumor" thread. Feel free to copy+paste any comments into that thread.
  19. Pretty solid deal for both sides, I think. Snell has the potential to be a huge steal for Jack Z, while Clement still has a bit of promise in his bat. Considering a lot of people were hoping to get Clement in a trade for J.J. Hardy, I think it's pretty good for the Bucs to get him in a trade involving Jack Wilson. The incredible part is that while it seems like almost the entire roster has turned over, they're still trying to move Freddy Sanchez and Zach Duke. Here's the running tally for the Pirates this year...I'm probably forgetting somebody, but it's still quite a list. OUT: Jack Wilson Ian Snell Adam LaRoche Nyjer Morgan Sean Burnett Eric Hinske Nate McLouth IN: Jeff Clement Ronny Cedeno Aaron Pribanic Brett Lorin Hunter Strickland Argenis Diaz Nathan Adcock Casey Erickson Eric Fryer Lastings Milledge Joel Hanrahan Gorkys Hernandez Charlie Morton Jeff Locke
  20. This staff reminds me of the teams Melvin had in Texas where they had great offenses and no pitching. Back then his staff ace was John Burkett who is basically a better version of Suppan. It's tough to judge the old Rangers staffs on the traditional numbers, but I don't think there's any way you could call Burkett the Rangers' "ace"...looking back on baseball-reference, Rick Helling and Aaron Sele performed better in 1998 and 1999 and Ken Hill was very good in 1996. Helling: 1998 -- 20-7, 4.41 ERA, 109 ERA+ 1999 -- 13-11, 4.84 ERA, 106 ERA+ Sele: 1998 -- 19-11, 4.23 ERA, 113 ERA+ 1999 -- 18-9, 4.79 ERA, 107 ERA+ In comparison, Suppan in Milwaukee: 2007 -- 12-12, 4.62 ERA, 97 ERA+ 2008 -- 10-10, 4.96 ERA, 87 ERA+ 2009, so far -- 5-8, 5.27 ERA, 80 ERA+ I wouldn't disagree with the Suppan/Burkett comparison, but to say that Burkett was the best pitcher on those Texas teams that went to the playoffs isn't entirely fair. On a side note (and I'm talking to everyone here), let's avoid questioning the fandom of other posters here. We're all here at Brewerfan because we presumably like this team (other than those who come here and are open about their affiliations with other teams, who are more than welcome to contribute). We all like this team. We all like talking about this team with other fans. Some users may disagree with you, and some may express themselves differently than you would. This does not mean they're not a fan. I realize the team is playing poorly right now, but frustrations should not be taken out on other posters. Let's treat each other with respect, and try to have a civil debate.
  21. Remembering back to the season predictions thread, I think I had this team pegged for around 85 wins. They might be 2 games under .500 right now, but I still think this team has what it takes to be 3 or 4 games over by the end of the year. Whether or not that'll be good enough to contend for the division remains to be seen, but I do feel like they'll be able to rebound at some point and still pull out a winning season.
  22. Don't be...I can assure you it's very much appreciated, and I definitely agree with you. When no one seems to want to win the division, things are very far from being over when it comes to the season. At least Swindle's looked pretty good in there tonight...if he can become a solid contributor to the bullpen it'll go a long way towards solidifying a bullpen that's been tiring.
  23. Sometimes all you can do in games like this is laugh and take solace in the fact that the other team's pitching is just as bad. This game (and thread) reminds me of that Cleveland game with the crazy comeback.
  24. Aaaand this is why you don't quit on this game just yet. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Very nice to see Braunie heating up.
  25. Then I guess the Phillies, Dodgers, and Yankees aren't contenders. It's extremely hard to sweep any team in a 4-game series, especially the Nationals.
