  1. Observations from WV....Jeffress just appears to be tiring from the long season...at times he looked brilliant, at times he looked, well....tired. LaPorta just flat didn't get ANYTHING to hit tonite.....mostly didn't even get anything to swing at....3 BB's....He came up with the bases juiced and I got all excited, only to take about a 9 or 10 pitch walk. I can't wait to see that guy get in a groove. Moving Caufield to leadoff and Fermaint, to well, not leadoff has been a move I've been waiting for for a while also....I think we'll see more good things out of Chuckie!
  2. Steve Palazzolo, the 6-10 pitcher who spent time here in WV and Helena in 2006 is pitching for the Nashua Pride in the Can-Am league. Here are his stats through August 8 6-2 with a 2.61 ERA in 31 games...38 IP with 34 hits 14BB and 43 K's. This guys is as hard a workers as I have seen pass through Charleston, and think the Brewers should have given this guy a better look this spring!
  3. Coach: I'm with you. I'm glad to see you sharing the knowledge with the rest of us. Let's just say enough has been said here and lock this thread. I look forward to seeing Angel in the bigs so I can bring my son to see him and, when my son gets a little bit older explain to him how life can deal you adversity, but a strong man will take it and thrive off the challenge. That is what I predict Angel will do!
  4. Let's not get me going on the steroid talk....let's just say that the substance he tested positive for probably was something other than "steroids". Thanks!
  5. Where has all the Power (hitting that is) gone? Can't wait for these guys to get home....hopefully the bats will come alive again...any chance on us seeing LaPorta this year? Mass....it is great to see Axe hanging out along side of your name!
  6. Here's a link to the latest boxscore of Steve Palazzolo who the Brewers released after Spring Training this year. He has been playing for Nashua in the Can-Am league this season. If you remember, Steve was 6' 10" tall and I understand he has a team mate who is a 5' 6" Japanese pitcher....There's an interesting picture for you! www.canamleague.com/2007s...r7270.html
  7. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'll hold my I told you so's until after he puts up some numbers, but I think Joe is "big league ready" from both a skills and maturity standpoint! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- That comes from an early March post I made on the board...I guess after last nite's debut, I can throw out the official I TOLD YOU SO! Congrats to Joe, and THANKS to Will and Steve also. It's been fun watching 3 guys (Braun, Yo, Joe) pass through Charleston in the bigs in only 3 seasons, and my thoughts were Will would be a year to year and 1/2 behind Yo!
  8. Just a link about Joe Thatcher from the hawaii league website www.hawaiiwinterbaseball....her_Traded
  9. Well put coach!!!! I got to know Angel while he was here in Charleston last year, and unless it was some kind of bonehead mistake or misunderstanding, I just didn't see this kid doing anything like this at all! HE IS FIRST CLASS! Treated all my family especially my five year old left handed catching prospect as you would family! He gave my boy a catcher's mitt with Angel Salome stitched in the leather because of their friendship. That was before he became a father. I only knew him for a season,a but from character standpoint, he's what I want my child to emulate if he were in that spot. I don't care what the infraction, until you personally know the person, hold off on your hangman's noose! Here's to hoping to visit for a week or two here in WV on his way back to the top! HE is a class act, and a heckuva prospect!
  10. Has anyone heard anything definitive as to what the substance was? Is there any possibility it could've been something that he was taking in relationship to his past injury? Just seems like we've hung this guy already.......I see leave him alone in the P50....
  11. Actually....I think Periard really was the starter...went 5 inning gave up 5 hits, 2 runs earned 1BB and 3 k's. Brewer and Chapman with Jackety, Jack Jacks, Power up 4-2 bottom of 6. Omar Aguilar is on in relief
  12. Watched Jeffress pitch tonite, and said the hell with the stadium gun and went in search of the stalker gun in the 2nd and 3rd. JJ constantly was bringing 98 on the gun with just about every fastball thrown with bad intentions! I was taking pictures and asked the guy with the gun what the top he had hit was, and he showed me 98 on the gun, then would turn the gun after every fastball, and it was almost always dead on 98....he was bringing some heat! Of course what came in at 98 in the third, must've gone out at about 105 as it headed over the centerfield fence in the 4th, but man can this kid bring it!
  13. Anyone notice that Darren now has 50 Stolen bases on the year? I think that only leaves one other guy in all of minor league baseball ahead of him at 54, and considering he seems to steal them in bunches like the 3 from yesterday, he could take the lead by monday! I just wish I was still getting to watch him here in Charleston, but happy to see the BA coming up in Brevard!
  14. I guess the Power have found their bats tonite! Anyone else notice that Brent Brewer now has 26 stolen bases very quietly? That's six guys with multi-hit nites, including Lefave and Holmberg with 3 each!
  15. somebody help me out with this one....where does a .228 hitting Gillespie rate a promotion to AA when he never even went through low A ball? I'm just curious when I read things about him and I've never seen him play, but I watch Chuckie Caufield hitting .311 with 13sb and 96 hits not get talked about so much. I know there is more power with Gillespie, but what is his big appeal this season?
  16. As I said in my original post when I said I didn't see anything over 89 on the stadium gun, it is historically 5-6 mph slow, and he was mixing his pitches extremely well that night....I saw a couple changeups for strikeouts actually at 69, so don't put too much into my 89 mph post...the guy can definitely bring it, but I think he is slowing it down some, not trying to overthrow, finding some control, and learning to pitch here in WV! Edit: Went to the game tonite and Omar Aguilar hit 93 on the stadium gun, and the player charting pitches said it was 98 on the handheld....so, 89 the other nite was probably really 94 or 95.
  17. Quote: I never saw anything over 89 He was mixing pitches and speeds quite a bit. Most of his strikeouts actually came on changes in the low 70's high 60's.
  18. I've seen both these guys pitch, and saw Jeffress throw tonite. Wil is a pitcher, knows the game, the batters he is facing and can pitch and not just throw, smart pitcher. But with Jeffress he is smooth in his delivery, not as mature in knowing how to pitch, and after watching the board tonite, I never saw anything over 89. They say the speed gun in Charleston can be 5 mph slow, but I did see it read 90 once for the other team's pitcher, and have seen it register as high as 94 for Omar Aguilar here. I like Jeffress, but to this point he is getting better but not dominating hitters the way I have seen Inman and Yo on there passes through Charleston...Jeffress is good, just not ready from an experience standpoint to be compared to those two guys from my point of view...and that was after watching a very good outing from him tonite. Don't expect the world yet, and give the kid a chance to establish himself some more and we all won't be disappointed!
  19. Bradddock is Back! Great to see (since me and my family serve as his host family!) My prediction is the man will still lead all of Milb in K/9 at the end of the season!
  20. All I got to say is I hope the dude can continue to put up numbers and force his way up the ladder! Seeing him here in WV is something that I'm gonna miss, but thrilled to death for him....maybe they can send him back for the playoffs in September....I guess that's just wishful thinking. It's hard watching these guys in Charleston, because you get to know them some and see what great guys they are, but this bunch is all so talented you know the best of the bunch won't be here for long, which I guess is generally bad news for any non-performing guys above them...can't wait to see what all blows up today and after the draft!
  21. Guys...I think you did a fantastic job. Reading all the discussion above, I realize we all only see and follow those we know and are familiar with. I think about the only way any of us could contribute / improve upon what you have done, is to just add names to the end of our posts of guys we feel might be deserving of a harder look before next P50. For instance, I'm "stuck" here in Charleston watching this thing that one of our local sportswriters commented on the "silly nickname" (which I think for 2007 is a fantastic nickname) and I think my NEXT guys to watch would be Chuckie Caufield and EJ Shanks. These guys are fantastic and you guys did one heckuva job!
  22. Brae Wright: Guys, go easy on Brae. My understanding is that the club has been tinkering with his mechanics and telling him to "give it more time" repeatedly, but I think he has grown frustrated with that and went back to his old delivery....I could be wrong but that's what I heard....we'll see after next time out because he was very good today! He was the opening day starter here if I recall! Also as for the comment about the home record earlier....these guys lost 3 of their first 5 playing in 30 degree weather and snow....I don't think you can find ANY fault in these guys first half!
  23. Pogo: I think you are right on the money with Ford and Holmberg. Kenny is a great guy, and had the injury problem not been so persistent, I think he would/should be in BC already. I don't want to see him go the way of Tony Festa and give up after being stuck in WV for 2 years. He deserves the shot. You have to remember that Errecart and Gillespie never sniffed the WV air and at 21 and 22 finishing out the year here wouldn't be horrible for either of them in my opinion. This team is absolutely a beautiful thing to see, and sometimes winning breeds talents that don't come out in other situations. I agree on Caufield also, but how do you do it? With all this young talent, how do you decide who gets the next shot?
  24. Salome: Always hoping the recovery continues Inman: Knows how to pitch and not just throw Cain: He's only been playing ball a few years and physically maturing Ford: Speed beyond comparison - when he cuts down on the k's watchout....can see a big difference in 2007 vs. 2006 Brantley: Plate control is incredible Braddock: Another kid who knows how to pitch and seems to revel in mastering the zone Being a Charleston, WV resident has been so much more fun since the brew crew came to town....hope you guys never leave!
  25. That's three hits today already for Ford...I don't want to see him leave Charleston, but he deserves to go up! That puts him at .346 with 43 runs, 31 RBI, 5 HR and 31 Stolen bases....not a bad 1st half! Listening to the game and Bull just said Darren just ran a ball down running into the wall to make the catch taking away extra bases that in his opinion should be an instant web gem on ESPN...can't wait to see it!
