  1. I know Thome hasn't played 1B in years, but I can't imagine he's going there to be just a bat off the bench. Even if it's only as a part time starter, Loney should be sitting at least twice a week. His bat is awful.
  2. Axford gets out of a 1st and 3rd, two out jam! Strikes out Mark Hamilton and Matt Pagnozzi. Big trouble in Huntsville. Well, as I'm typing this the Stars lose. First batter reaches on an error, sac bunt and an error puts two on with no one out, bunt single, pop out and a walkoff double.
  3. Okay, Hardy with the leadoff single. Come on Koshansky. Edit: Koshansky to 1st on a fielder's choice. Hardy out at 2nd. Now Gamel. Edit 2: Wild pitch, Koshansky to 2nd. 2-0 count on Gamel. Edit 3: Gamel walks, another wild pitch. Runners now on 1st and 3rd with one out. Edit 4: Tike Redman pops out on the first pitch. Ugh. Up to Iribarren to get a hit. They're walking Iribarren to get to Corporan. Edit 5: Corporan flies out to deep right. On to the 12th.
  4. Stern steals a base. Winning run now at 2nd for Patterson with two outs. Edit: Patterson strikes out looking.
  5. Can we please stop using the fangraphs salary? How many of the top free agents are paid what they're "worth" according to that metric? Sabathia was "worth" $34.6M last year, he didn't get a 7 year $242M contract. Mark Teixeira was "worth" $30M last year. He didn't get an 8 year $240M contract. WAR's a good stat, but players aren't paid based on what their WAR is and what that's worth on the free agent market.
  6. It's not a screw job. If he didn't want to be sent to the minors, he should've played better.
  7. Bush was 26. I don't really consider that young. Same with Capuano. Villanueva was one I missed. Point still stands, he really hasn't acquired upside pitchers with good stuff who still need refinement. I guess I could add Josh Butler to the "acquired" list as he's now looking like a legitimate prospect with legitimate big league stuff.
  8. Smoltz said that the Cardinals found something in his delivery that was making him tip his pitches for the Red Sox. Seems like so far, the Cardinals staff might have been on to something.
  9. Don't want Kennedy. Weak stuff, I want guys who can consistently break 90 with their fastball.
  10. Really all I need to know is this. What young pitchers has Melvin acquired and what young pitchers has he given away? He acquired Jose Capellan and Zach Jackson and gave away Jorge de la Rosa, Will Inman and Dana Eveland. You can argue the merits of how good each of those players are, but that's a pretty pathetic track record of bringing in young pitching into the organization, especially when you've been drafting bats and lots of them in the draft. Melvin had to have known that the organization was thin on pitching, but did nothing.
  11. I think their eventual replacement for Uggla is Chris Coghlan. He played 242 of his 288 games in the field there in the minors and then that makes a spot in the outfield for Cameron Maybin.
  12. It's in Reno.
  13. Zach Jackson being one of the best examples kind of proves his point. His fastball has averaged 88.5 mph in the majors. He's exactly the soft-tossing, knows how to pitch, pitch to contact guy that TheCrew07 is talking about.
  14. I don't see the Rays trading Shields. They traded Kazmir to save some money. I don't want Sonnanstine either. Good control, but weak stuff. Like a Dave Bush type. Not bad to have, but not what we need.
  15. I guess I don't see it like that. I think it means it's more likely Hardy is starting. This gives Melvin options. If he doesn't like the offers for Hardy, he can just keep him, hope he has a good first half and then trade him for the return of 1.5 years of his worth instead of .5 years.
  16. I would get a kick out of Brian trying to explain what a "winning ball player" is or if it's just some tired cliché used by broadcasters with nothing interesting to say.
  17. Exactly. That last part is good too. He's currently hitting .250/.288/.446 in Nashville. The power is nice, the OBP is still putrid. He doesn't really deserve to be called up with those numbers.
  18. I know it's been said many times before, but it's really time to shut Gallardo down for the year. 104 pitches in five innings.
  19. I'd take this trade in a second. Even in his "terrible" year this year, he's been better than Hart and like Stevo said, Suppan has been below replacement level the past two years.
  20. I would venture to guess that you'd be one of the first in line slamming Melvin had he signed Lowe (who didn't want to play here) Who said that? Melvin actually said in a recent interview he probably should've pursued Lowe harder. There's no indication that he didn't want to play here. And please explain what resources are tied up in Eric Gagne? 12% of our payroll for a year. That's a pretty significant resource. As for trades. How about Jason Hammel? He has pretty good stuff, has some upside and was traded to the Rockies for Aneury Rodriguez.
  21. Really looking forward to following the pitching tonight from AA on down.
  22. So you think they're going to take a guy who missed two years because of injuries and work him to 150 innings after pitching roughly 80 when this season is over to save the GM's job? I really doubt that.
  23. I think Hardy is going to be the opening day SS next year, Escobar goes to the minors. Hopefully Hardy has a good first half, gets traded and then Escobar takes over mid season.
