Tim Redding and/or Cordero

I know Cordero is hurt right now, and I've never been a huge fan anyhow, but if we want to make a run would either of these guys work for us. Redding has really resurrected his career and will be a free agent. Cordero costs about $6m, not sure for how long. Redding seems like the easier catch, and we know that Bowden(is he still there?) likes toolsy minor leaguers. Not even going to suggest what we might have to give, just wondering if anyone thinks Redding would be a good catch.

Not sure I like the idea of "buying high" for guys like Redding that have had such ups and downs though he's been good for 24 starts over 2 seasons now. It depends on what they'd want. He still just 30 and I have a feeling they might want quite a bit.

I'm bringing this back due to wishful thinking. Another solid outing against Philly. I think we could get Redding, Cordero, and Maddux without mortgaging our future.

I really like the idea of Maddux because I doubt that San Diego is going to ask that much. Really, even though it is Maddux, who is going to give up the farm for a 40-year old? How much would that take? I'm assuming Gwynn would be included in any deal we made with the Padres. How many more players would be involved? A pitcher as well?

Two problems with Maddux that we need to consider...1) Money 2) He won't get to pitch half his game in Petco....I do like Gwynn more than many on this board but he could definitely go.

I think we've pretty much been discussing just Gwynn for Maddux. Anything more than that and I start to have a problem, since this will most likely be Maddux's last season.

 

I'm a big Gwynn fan, and think he can be a quality major leaguer. But it just appears that he has no future with the Brewers. And it's not like the Brewers are short on outfield prospects.

I like the Maddux idea alot, and I think that Gwynn could be enough just by himself. I dont think that Maddux's 10 million dollar contract is too much, considering the market for starters these days. As for him leaving Petco, while it will affect him, I dont think it would be that dramatic, as he usually does not have a big problem with the long ball. In 2005 for Chicago he had HR/9 of 1.19, and 2006 for Chicago he had a HR/9 of .95.

And I feel Maddux would be a huge help for our other starters. Bush, Villanueva and Parra are all similar in terms of stuff, meaning that they aren't overpowering guys with the 97 MPH fastball. Seeing how a future hall-of-famer prepares and executes with having to overpower the batters would show them how it's done.
