Dude, he can totally run fast though. Who needs a guy who can bat .280 with power when you can get a guy who can bat .280 with infield hits?

 

 

Gwynn needs a .735 OPS in my opinion to be an asset to this team in center due to his defense (he saved three runs in last nights game - 2 with an amazing catch, and one with a great play off the wall to hold a guy, that never did score, at third) and speed.

 

Yes, Wells, and Crawford are better options, but if the cost is too great to obtain them, that needs to be factored into the organizational picture. Those that reject Gwynn out of hand should at the very least be respectful and non-snarky towards those that have differing opinions. No ones word here is gospel.

I don't see why so many people feel that JJ Hardy should be in the lineup next year but that Gywnn isn't good enough to be in the lineup.

 

Niether of them were world beaters in the minors but both had solid minor league careers. Hardy and Gwynn had similar batting averages in the minor league careers. Hardy had a better slugging pct., but Gwynn kept a higher on base pct. Hardy had a better strike out rate, but Gwynn had a better walk rate and much better speed. JJ struggled out of the gate in the majors, but Gwnn has been doing just fine.

 

My point is that one of these players isn't that much better than the other, yet JJ seems to get loads of support in this board, while Gwynn is rarely shown any love.

 

Gwynn, I think has a better chance of being in the lineup next year because he only has to worry about beating out Gross and Clark for a job, while JJ has to beat out Bill Hall.

I'm sorry but its not even close. Hardy has at least shown he can hit to a degreee, Gwynn hasn't. Hardy had a 795 OPS in Hunstville during his first full season there. Gwynn had a .708 OPS in his second season. Throw in relative positions, and the fact that Hardy was 20 compared to Gwynn's 22 and its not close at all (yes, they are the same age).

 

And Gwynn has sucked in the majors.

If Gywnn has sucked in the majors so far, there probably isn't a word to describe how bad Hardy was when he first came up.
